[Machine] "The prophet ﷺ said: whoever recites the two verses from Surah Al-Baqarah in one night, they will be sufficient for him."

النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَنْ قَرَأَ بِالْآيَتَيْنِ مِنْ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ كَفَتَاهُ

[Machine] A man heard someone reciting "Say, He is Allah, the One" repeatedly. So, when morning came, he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned it to him. The man used to frequently recite it, and Al-Qa'qaa bin Makhshi (a companion) would recite it as well. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, indeed it equals one-third of the Quran."

سَمِعَ رَجُلًا يَقْرَأُ قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ يُرَدِّدُهَا فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ جَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ وَكَانَ الرَّجُلُ يَتَقَالُّهَا وَقَالَ الْقَعْنَبِيُّ يُقَالُّهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ إِنَّهَا لَتَعْدِلُ ثُلُثَ الْقُرْآنِ

[Machine] A man stood in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and recited the Surah "Say, He is Allah, the One" in its entirety, repeatedly, without adding anything more. When we woke up, a man said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "O Messenger of Allah, indeed there was a man who stood up in the night and recited the Surah 'Say, He is Allah, the One,' Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begot nor was begotten, and there is none comparable to Him,' without adding anything more." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, it is equivalent to one-third of the Quran."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَامَ فِي زَمَنِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَرَأَ قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ السُّورَةَ كُلَّهَا يُرَدِّدُهَا لَا يَزِيدُ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْنَا قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إنَّ رَجُلًا قَامَ لَيْلَةً يَقْرَأُ فِي السَّحَرِ قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ اللهُ الصَّمَدُ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ يُرَدِّدُهَا لَا يَزِيدُ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ كَانَ الرَّجُلُ يُقَالُّهَا قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ إِنَّهَا لَتَعْدِلُ ثُلُثَ الْقُرْآنِ

A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the prayer at night. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Prayer during the night should consist of pairs of rak'ahs, but if one of you fears the morning is near he should pray one rak'ah which will make his prayer an odd number for him. أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا خَشِيَ أَحَدُكُمُ الصُّبْحَ صَلَّى رَكْعَةً وَاحِدَةً تُوتِرُ لَهُ مَا قَدْ صَلَّى

[Machine] I heard a man asking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was on the pulpit, "How should one of us pray at night?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Pray two units of prayer, then if you fear the approach of dawn, pray one unit of Witr prayer, and it will suffice you for the prayers you have missed."

سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا يَسْأَلُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ كَيْفَ يُصَلِّي أَحَدُنَا بِاللَّيْلِ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا خَشِيتَ الصُّبْحَ فَأَوْتِرْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ تُوتِرُ لَكَ مَا مَضَى مِنْ صَلَاتِكَ

[Machine] That a man asked the Prophet ﷺ about the night prayer, so he said: "Pray two by two. When you fear the break of dawn, perform the Witr prayer with one rak'ah."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا خَشِيتَ الصُّبْحَ فَأَوْتِرْ بِرَكْعَةٍ

[Machine] A man from the Muslims asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "O Messenger of Allah, how is the night prayer?" He replied, "Two by two, and if you fear the approach of dawn, then perform the odd prayer." Abdullah ibn Umar used to give salutations after every two units of prayer, then perform the odd prayer.

سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ؟ فَقَالَ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا خِفْتَ الصُّبْحَ فَأَوْتِرْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ يُسَلِّمُ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُوتِرُ بِوَاحِدَةٍ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Witr is one prayer consisting of a single unit at the end of the night."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْوِتْرُ رَكْعَةٌ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "A prayer during the late hours of the night."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ رَكْعَةٌ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , say, "A unit of night prayer."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ رَكْعَةٌ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him about the Witr prayer while I was between them. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The night prayer is done in pairs. If it is the last part of the night, then make Witr with one Rak'ah, then pray two Rak'ahs before Fajr prayer, which means before the Fajr prayer." Asim al-Ahwal said, and Lahiq ibn Humaid said a similar narration, except that he said, "Begin the morning with one Rak'ah."

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ الْوِتْرِ وَأَنَا بَيْنَهُمَا فَقَالَ صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى فَإِذَا كَانَ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ فَأَوْتِرْ بِرَكْعَةٍ ثُمَّ صَلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ يُرِيدُ قَبْلَ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ قَالَ عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ وَقَالَ لَاحِقُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ مِثْلَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ بَادِرِ الصُّبْحَ بِرَكْعَةٍ

[Machine] A man called the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in the mosque and said, "O Messenger of Allah, how should I perform the Witr prayer?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever prays, let him pray two units, two units. If he fears that he will end up by morning in prostration, let him pray one unit."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا نَادَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ أُوْتِرُ صَلَاةَ اللَّيْلِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ صَلَّى فَلْيُصَلِّ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِنْ خَشِيَ أَنْ يُصْبِحَ سَجَدَ سَجْدَةً فَأَوْتَرَتْ لَهُ مَا صَلَّى

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The night prayer is to be performed in pairs. If you see that dawn is about to break, then offer one odd-numbered prayer." I asked Ibn Umar, "What is meant by 'in pairs'?" He replied, "Offering the salaam (salutation) in every two units of prayer." According to the narration of Adam, he said, "Offer one odd-numbered prayer." Then a man asked Ibn Umar, "What is meant by 'in pairs'?" He replied, "Offering the salaam between every two units of prayer." It is narrated in its chain of transmission from Shu'bah that Uqbah bin Hareth said, "He (the Prophet) said..." (the rest of the sentence is cut off)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ أَنَّ الصُّبْحَ يُدْرِكُكَ فَأَوْتِرْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عُمَرَ مَا مَثْنَى مَثْنَى؟ قَالَ مُتَسَلِّمٌ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ بَشَّارٍ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ آدَمَ فَأَوْتِرْ بِرَكْعَةٍ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ لِابْنِ عُمَرَ مَا مَثْنَى مَثْنَى؟ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ بَيْنَ كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَقَالَ فِي إِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ثنا عُقْبَةُ بْنُ حُرَيْثٍ قَالَ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ

'A'isha reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray eleven rak'ahs at night, observing the Witr with a single rak'ah, and when he had finished them, he lay down on his right side, till the Mu'adhdhin came to him and he (the Holy Prophet) then observed two short rak'ahs (of Sunan of the dawn prayer). أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُصَلِّي بِاللَّيْلِ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يُوتِرُ مِنْهَا بِوَاحِدَةٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْهَا اضْطَجَعَ عَلَى شِقِّهِ الْأَيْمَنِ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهُ الْمُؤَذِّنُ فَيُصَلِّيَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ

"Between the time when he finished 'Isha' prayer and Fajr, the Prophet ﷺ used to pray eleven Rak'ahs, saying the Taslim after each two Rak'ahs, then praying Witr as one Rak'ah. He would prostrate for as long as it takes one of you to recite fifty verses, then he would raise his head. When the Mu'adhdhin finished the call to Fajr prayer and he could see the dawn, he would pray two brief Rak'ahs, then he would go out with him." Some of these narrators (Ibn Abi Dhi'b, Yunus and 'Amr bin Al-Harith) added some phrases not mentioned by the others in the Hadith. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 685)

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فِيمَا بَيْنَ أَنْ يَفْرُغَ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ إِلَى الْفَجْرِ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يُسَلِّمُ مِنْ كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَيُوتِرُ بِوَاحِدَةٍ وَيَسْجُدُ سَجْدَةً قَدْرَ مَا يَقْرَأُ أَحَدُكُمْ خَمْسِينَ آيَةً قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَإِذَا سَكَتَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ وَتَبَيَّنَ لَهُ الْفَجْرُ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ عَلَى شِقِّهِ الْأَيْمَنِ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهُ الْمُؤَذِّنُ لِلْإِقَامَةِ فَيَخْرُجَ مَعَهُ قَالَ وَبَعْضُهُمْ يَزِيدُ عَلَى بَعْضٍ فِي قِصَّةِ الْحَدِيثِ

The Prophet ﷺ said: The witr is a duty for every Muslim so if anyone wishes to observe it with five rak'ahs, he may do so; if anyone wishes to observe it with three, he may do so, and if anyone wishes to observe it with one, he may do so. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1422)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِخَمْسٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِثَلَاثٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ

“Witr is Haqq.* Whoever wishes let him pray Witr with five (Rak’ah), and whoever wishes let him pray Witr with three (Rak’ah), and whoever wishes let him pray Witr with one (Rak’ah).” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1190)

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ الْوِتْرَ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِخَمْسٍ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِثَلَاثٍ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Perform Witr prayer with five units. If you are unable, then three units. If you are unable, then one unit. And if you are unable, then make a gesture with your head."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْتِرْ بِخَمْسٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ فَبِثَلَاثٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ فَبِوَاحِدَةٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ فَأَوْمِئْ إِيمَاءً

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Witr is an obligation, so whoever wishes, let him perform with seven (rak'ahs), and whoever wishes, let him perform with three (rak'ahs), and whoever wishes, let him perform with one (rak'ah). And whoever is overwhelmed (by sleep or forgetfulness), let him give a nod. These individuals agreed to remove this narration from Az-Zuhri and they followed it, along with Ma'mar ibn Rashid's narration from Wahb regarding it."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِسَبْعٍ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِثَلَاثٍ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ وَمَنْ غُلِبَ فَلْيُومِئْ إِيمَاءً اتَّفَقَ هَؤُلَاءِ عَلَى رَفْعِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ وَتَابَعَهُمْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ مَعْمَرُ بْنُ رَاشِدٍ مِنْ رِوَايَةِ وُهَيْبٍ عَنْهُ

[Machine] To be not elevated and that it mixes in the soul between the narrations of the remaining (companions) with the narration of Wuhayb from Ma'mar, and Allah knows best. And we have narrated from a group of the companions about voluntary or Witr prayer with one separate unit, different from what preceded it, among them Umar ibn Al-Khattab.

أَنْ يَكُونَ غَيْرَ مَرْفُوعٍ وَإِنَّهُ لَيَتَخَالَجُ فِي النَّفْسِ مِنْ رِوَايَةِ الْبَاقِينَ مَعَ رِوَايَةِ وُهَيْبٍ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ وَقَدْ رُوِّينَا عَنْ جَمَاعَةٍ مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ ُؓ التَّطَوُّعَ أَوِ الْوِتْرَ بِرَكْعَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ مَفْصُولَةٍ عَمَّا قَبْلَهَا مِنْهُمْ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ

[Machine] Umair ibn al-Khattab Q said, "I passed by the Prophet's Mosque and performed one unit of prayer, then I left. A man followed him and said, 'O leader of the believers, you only prayed one unit.' He said, 'It was voluntary prayer, so whoever wishes may increase and whoever wishes may decrease.'"

قَالَ مَرَّ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ فِي مَسْجِدِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَرَكَعَ رَكْعَةً وَاحِدَةً ثُمَّ انْطَلَقَ فَلَحِقَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَا رَكَعْتَ إِلَّا رَكْعَةً وَاحِدَةً قَالَ هُوَ التَّطَوُّعُ فَمَنْ شَاءَ زَادَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ نَقَصَ

[Machine] That no one dominated me on that night. Then a man winked at me and I did not turn around. Then he winked at me again and I turned around and saw Uthman ibn Affan. So, I moved aside and he came forward and recited the Quran in one unit of prayer.

أَنْ لَا يَغْلِبَنِي عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ يَغْمِزُنِي فَلَمْ أَلْتَفِتْ ثُمَّ غَمَزَنِي فَالْتَفَتُّ فَإِذَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ ؓ فَتَنَحَّيْتُ فَتَقَدَّمَ فَقَرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ فِي رَكْعَةٍ

[Machine] I said, "I will surpass everyone in the night prayer tonight." So I went ahead of them. While I was standing and praying, suddenly someone placed his hand on my back. I looked and saw it was Uthman ibn Affan, who was the Amir (leader) at that time. So I stepped aside. He stood and began reciting the Qur'an until he finished it, then he performed a bowing (rak'ah) and sat down, recited the testimony of faith, and greeted in a single bowing (rak'ah) without adding extra. When he finished, I said, "O Amir al-Mu'minin (Commander of the Faithful), you only prayed one bowing (rak'ah)." He replied, "It is my odd (witr) prayer." And among them is Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas.

قُلْتُ لَأَغْلِبَنَّ عَلَى الْمَقَامِ اللَّيْلَةَ فَسَبَقْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَبَيْنَمَا أَنَا قَائِمٌ أُصَلِّي إِذَا رَجُلٌ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى ظَهْرِي قَالَ فَنَظَرْتُ فَإِذَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ ؓ وَهُوَ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَمِيرٌ فَتَنَحَّيْتُ عَنْهُ فَقَامَ فَافْتَتَحَ الْقُرْآنَ حَتَّى فَرَغَ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ وَجَلَسَ وَتَشَهَّدَ وَسَلَّمَ فِي رَكْعَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ لَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَيْهَا فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قُلْتُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِنَّمَا صَلَّيْتَ رَكْعَةً قَالَ هِيَ وِتْرِي وَمِنْهُمْ سَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ ؓ

[Machine] Yes, seven is dearer to me than five, and five is dearer to me than three, and three is dearer to me than one, but I am lenient with myself.

نَعَمْ سَبْعٌ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَمْسٍ وَخَمْسٌ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ وَثَلَاثٌ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ وَاحِدَةٍ وَلَكِنْ أُخَفِّفُ عَنْ نَفْسِي

[Machine] I saw Saad bin Abi Waqqas praying the Isha prayer, then he prayed an additional rak'ah after it.

رَأَيْتُ سَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ ؓ يُصَلِّي الْعِشَاءَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى بَعْدَهَا رَكْعَةً

[Machine] On the authority of Abdullah bin Tha'labah al-'Udhri, who was one of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , he said: "I saw Saad bin Abi Waqqas, when performing the Isha prayer or the Witr prayer, he would add an extra unit of prayer, more than what Yunus used to do, until he would stand up from the depths of the night."

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ الْعُذْرِيِّ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَدْ مَسَحَ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ سَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ ؓ إِذَا صَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِرَكْعَةٍ زَادَ فِيهِ غَيْرُهُ عَنْ يُونُسَ حَتَّى يَقُومَ مِنْ جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ

[Machine] That he read the Quran in one rak'ah and among them was Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari.

أَنَّهُ قَرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ فِي رَكْعَةٍ وَمِنْهُمْ أَبُو مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيُّ ؓ

Abu Musa was between Makkah and Al-Madinah. He prayed 'Isha with two rak'ahs, then he stood and prayed one rak'ah of witr in which he recited one hundred verses from An-Nisa'. Then he said: "I tried my best to place my feet where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his, and to recite what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1728)

مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيَّ كَانَ بَيْنَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ فَصَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَةً أَوْتَرَ بِهَا فَقَرَأَ بِمِائَةِ آيَةٍ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَا آلَوْتُ أَنْ أَضَعَ قَدَمِيَّ حَيْثُ وَضَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَدَمَيْهِ وَأَنْ أَقْرَأَ بِمَا قَرَأَ بِهِ وَمِنْهُمْ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ

عَنْ مَالِكٍ

“How should I perform Witr?” He said: “Pray Witr with one Rak’ah.” He said: “I am afraid that the people will say that I am cutting the prayer short.” He said: “The Sunnah of Allah and His Messenger.” Meaning “This is the Sunnah of Allah and His Messenger.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1176)

قَالَ أَسُنَّةُ اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ تُرِيدُ؟ هَذِهِ سُنَّةُ اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ

[Machine] Do you know the Witr prayer during the night? I said yes, it is after Isha prayer. He said, "You're correct. The Witr prayer is one unit. So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, 'O Abu Abdur-Rahman, people say that the Bultairaa is three units.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, that is not the Bultairaa. The Bultairaa is when a person prays a complete unit of prayer in its Rukoo', Sujood, and Qiyam, and then stands for another unit without completing its Rukoo', Sujood, or Qiyam. That is the Bultairaa.' Among them is Abdullah bin Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib."

بُنَيَّ هَلْ تَعْرِفُ وِتْرَ النَّهَارِ؟ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ الْمَغْرِبُ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ وِتْرُ اللَّيْلِ وَاحِدَةٌ بِذَلِكَ أَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ تِلْكَ الْبُتَيْرَاءُ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ لَيْسَ تِلْكَ الْبُتَيْرَاءَ إِنَّمَا الْبُتَيْرَاءُ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ الرَّجُلُ الرَّكْعَةَ التَّامَّةَ فِي رُكُوعِهَا وَسُجُودِهَا وَقِيَامِهَا ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فِي الْأُخْرَى فَلَا يُتِمُّ لَهَا رُكُوعًا وَلَا سُجُودًا وَلَا قِيَامًا فَتِلْكَ الْبُتَيْرَاءُ وَمِنْهُمْ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ ؓ

[Machine] "Shall I not inform you about Witr (an odd-numbered prayer)? I said: Yes. So he stood and performed a single rakah (unit of prayer) and then went into Rukoo' (bowing)."

صَلَّيْتُ إِلَى جَنْبِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ الْوِتْرَ؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى فَقَامَ فَرَكَعَ رَكْعَةً

[Machine] I saw Muawiyah praying the night prayer, then he performed an additional rak'ah (unit of prayer). I mentioned this to Ibn Abbas and he said, "He did the correct thing."

رَأَيْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ صَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ بِرَكْعَةٍ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَقَالَ أَصَابَ

[Machine] Someone from us, may God be pleased with him, said: "No one amongst us is more knowledgeable than Mu'awiyah. He is the most knowledgeable among us, whether it is one, five, seven, or more than that. Among them is Abu Ayoub, Khalid ibn Zaid from the Ansar."

أَصَابَ أَيْ بُنَيَّ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنَّا أَعْلَمَ مِنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ هِيَ وَاحِدَةٌ أَوْ خَمْسٌ أَوْ سَبْعٌ إِلَى أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْوِتْرِ مَا شَاءَ وَمِنْهُمْ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ خَالِدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ ؓ

[Machine] He heard from Abu Ayoub, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , saying, "Performing Witr is an obligation. Whoever wishes to perform Witr with five rak'ahs, let him do so. Whoever wishes to perform Witr with three rak'ahs, let him do so. Whoever wishes to perform Witr with one rak'ah, let him do so. And whoever is only able to nod his head [in prayer], let him do so." Among them was Mu'adh ibn Al-Harith Abu Halimah Al-Qari, who witnessed the Battle of Al-Jisr with Abu Ubaid Al-Thaqafi during the caliphate of Umar ibn Al-Khattab. It has been said that he was a companion.

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِخَمْسٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِثَلَاثٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ فَلْيَفْعَلْ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ إِلَّا أَنْ يَوْمِئَ بِرَأْسِهِ فَلْيَفْعَلْ وَمِنْهُمْ مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ أَبُو حَلِيمَةَ الْقَارِيُّ ؓ شَهِدَ الْجِسْرَ مَعَ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ الثَّقَفِيِّ فِي خِلَافَةِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ وَقَدْ قِيلَ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ

[Machine] From Nafi', from both of them, and among them was Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan.

عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْهُمَا جَمِيعًا وَمِنْهُمْ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ؓ

[Machine] Leave him alone, for he has accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

دَعْهُ؛ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ صَحِبَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ

[Machine] Ibn Abbas was asked, "What is your opinion about Muawiyah?" He replied, "He performs the Witr prayer only with one unit." He said, "He is correct; indeed, he is knowledgeable."

قِيلَ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ هَلْ لَكَ فِي مُعَاوِيَةَ؟ مَا أُوتِرَ إِلَّا بِرَكْعَةٍ‍‍ قَالَ أَصَابَ؛ إِنَّهُ فَقِيهٌ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray thirteen rak'ahs during the night, observing a witr out of that with five, he did not sit during the five except the last and then gave the salutation. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Numair reported it from Hisham recently. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1338)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَتْ صَلَاتُهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يُوتِرُ بِخَمْسٍ وَلَا يُسَلِّمُ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنَ الْخَمْسِ حَتَّى يَجْلِسَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمَ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray thirteen rak'ahs at night, in which he would perform the witr prayer with five rak'ahs. He would not sit during any of them until he sat in the last one. According to the narration of Ibrahim ibn Musa, he would conclude his prayer with the saying of "as-salamu alaykum" (peace be upon you). In the narration of Abu Bakr, the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at night consisted of thirteen rak'ahs, in which he would perform the witr prayer with five rak'ahs. He would not sit during any of them except for the last one.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يُوتِرُ مِنْهَا بِخَمْسٍ وَلَا يَجْلِسُ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنْهَا حَتَّى يَجْلِسَ فِي آخِرِهِنَّ فَيُسَلِّمَ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُوسَى وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ كَانَتْ صَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِاللَّيْلِ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يُوتِرُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ بِخَمْسٍ لَا يَجْلِسُ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنْهَا إِلَّا فِي آخِرِهَا

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to lie down, and when he woke up, he would rinse his mouth with water (Miswak), then perform ablution (Wudu), then pray eight units of prayer. He would sit after every two units and make the Tasleem (saying "As-salamu alaykum" to end the prayer), then he would pray five units of Witr prayer. He would not sit except in the fifth unit, and he would not make the Tasleem except in the fifth unit, and he would repeat this process.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَرْقُدُ فَإِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ تَسَوَّكَ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى ثَمَانِ رَكَعَاتٍ يَجْلِسُ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَيُسَلِّمُ ثُمَّ يُوتِرُ بِخَمْسِ رَكَعَاتٍ لَا يَجْلِسُ إِلَّا فِي الْخَامِسَةِ وَلَا يُسَلِّمُ إِلَّا فِي الْخَامِسَةِ وَهَكَذَا

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray thirteen rak'ahs, observing six rak'ahs in pairs including the two rak'ahs of dawn prayer. He would observe witr and five rak'ahs. He sat only in the last of them. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1359)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً بِرَكْعَتَيْهِ قَبْلَ الصُّبْحِ يُصَلِّي سِتًّا مَثْنَى مَثْنَى وَيُوتِرُ بِخَمْسٍ لَا يَقْعُدُ بَيْنَهُنَّ إِلَّا فِي آخِرِهِنَّ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِثَلَاثٍ لَا يَقْعُدُ إِلَّا فِي آخِرِهِنَّ كَذَا فِي هَذِهِ الرِّوَايَةِ وَقَدْ رُوِّينَا فِي حَدِيثِ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ وِتْرَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِتِسْعٍ ثُمَّ بِسَبْعٍ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ

[Machine] Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, was asked, "How did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform his Witr prayer?" She replied, "He used to perform Witr with four rak'ahs, then three, then two, then one. He would not increase it more than thirteen rak'ahs, according to Ahmad's narration. He did not perform two rak'ahs before Fajr prayer." I asked, "What is Witr prayer?" She said, "He did not leave this practice, and Ahmad did not mention three and six. This could possibly mean that it refers to three rak'ahs that are not separated by sitting or saying taslim, which would be similar to the narration of Hisham ibn 'Urwah. Allah knows best. We have also narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas from the Prophet ﷺ with the same meaning as Hisham ibn 'Urwah's narration about Witr prayer, consisting of five rak'ahs."

لِعَائِشَةَ ؓ بِكُمْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ؟ قَالَتْ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِأَرْبَعٍ وَثَلَاثٍ وَسِتٍّ وَثَلَاثٍ وَثَمَانٍ وَثَلَاثٍ وَعَشْرٍ وَثَلَاثٍ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يُوتِرُ بِأَنْقَصَ مِنْ سَبْعٍ وَلَا بِأَكْثَرَ مِنْ ثَلَاثِ عَشْرَةَ زَادَ أَحْمَدُ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يُوتِرُ بِرَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ قُلْتُ مَا يُوتِرُ؟ قَالَتْ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَدَعْ ذَلِكَ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ أَحْمَدُ وَسِتٍّ وَثَلَاثٍ وَهَذَا يَحْتَمِلُ أَنْ يُرِيدَ بِهِ ثَلَاثًا لَا يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُنَّ بِجُلُوسٍ وَلَا تَسْلِيمٍ فَيَكُونُ فِي مَعْنَى رِوَايَةِ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ وَرُوِّينَا عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِمَعْنَى رِوَايَةِ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ فِي الْوِتْرِ بِخَمْسِ رَكَعَاتٍ

I spent a night in the house of my maternal aunt Maimunah, daughter of al-Harith. The Prophet ﷺ offered the night prayer. He then came and prayed four rak'ahs and slept. He then stood up and prayed. I stood at his left side. He made me go round and made me stand at his right side. He then prayed five rak'ahs and slept, and I heard his snoring. He then got up and prayed two rak'ahs. Afterwards he came out and offered the dawn prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1357)

بِتُّ فِي بَيْتِ خَالَتِي مَيْمُونَةَ فَصَلَّى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْعِشَاءَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَصَلَّى أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ نَامَ ثُمَّ قَامَ قَالَ فَجِئْتُ فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَحَوَّلَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَصَلَّى خَمْسَ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ نَامَ حَتَّى سَمِعْتُ غَطِيطَهُ أَوْ قَالَ خَطِيطَهُ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ

[Machine] That Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib sent him to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , for a need, and it was the night when Maymuna bint al-Harith, the aunt of Ibn Abbas, was there. So he entered upon her and found the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , in the mosque. Ibn Abbas said, "I lay down in his room and thought to myself, how much does the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , pray?" Then he came to me while I was lying down in the room after a third of the night had passed, and he said, "Lie down." He said again, "Then he took a cloak and covered Maymuna with part of it, and some of it was on her. Then he stood up and prayed two rak'ahs, until he prayed eight rak'ahs, then he offered the Witr prayer with five rak'ahs, without sitting between them. Then he sat down and praised Allah and praised Him abundantly. Then his last words were, "O Allah, make light in my heart, and make light in my hearing, and make light in my sight, and make light for me on my right and make light for me on my left, and make light for me ahead of me and make light for me behind me, and increase me in light and increase me in light."

أَنَّ الْعَبَّاسَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بَعَثَهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي حَاجَةٍ وَكَانَتْ لَيْلَةَ مَيْمُونَةَ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ خَالَةِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا فَوَجَدَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ فَاضْطَجَعْتُ فِي حُجْرَتِهِ فَجَعَلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي أَنْ أُحْصِيَ كَمْ يُصَلِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَجَاءَ وَأَنَا مُضْطَجِعٌ فِي الْحُجْرَةِ بَعْدَ أَنْ ذَهَبَ ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ ارْقُدْ أَوْ بَعْدُ قَالَ ثُمَّ تَنَاوَلَ مِلْحَفَةً عَلَى مَيْمُونَةَ فَارْتَدَى بِبَعْضِهَا وَعَلَيْهَا بَعْضُهَا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ حَتَّى صَلَّى ثَمَانِ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ بِخَمْسٍ لَمْ يَجْلِسْ بَيْنَهُنَّ ثُمَّ قَعَدَ فَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللهِ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ فَأَكْثَرَ مِنَ الثَّنَاءِ ثُمَّ كَانَ آخِرُ كَلَامِهِ أَنْ قَالَ اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لِي نُورًا فِي قَلْبِي وَاجْعَلْ لِي نُورًا فِي سَمْعِي وَاجْعَلْ لِي نُورًا فِي بَصَرِي وَاجْعَلْ لِي نُورًا عَنْ يَمِينِي وَنُورًا عَنْ شِمَالِي وَاجْعَلْ لِي نُورًا بَيْنَ يَدِيَّ وَنُورًا خَلْفِي وَزِدْنِي نُورًا وَزِدْنِي نُورًا

[Machine] That Zaid used to perform Witr with five (rak'ahs) and would only say the salaam in the fifth (rak'ah), and my father used to do it like that, and I found it in the book of my father, Mouqayyad.

أَنَّ زَيْدًا كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِخَمْسٍ لَا يُسَلِّمُ إِلَّا فِي الْخَامِسَةِ وَكَانَ أَبِي يَفْعَلُهُ كَذَا وَجَدْتُهُ فِي الْكِتَابِ أَبِي مُقَيَّدًا

[Machine] Umru was more knowledgeable than him, and he would rise at the third hour with the takbeer.

كَانَ عُمَرُ أَفْقَهَ مِنْهُ كَانَ يَنْهَضُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ بِالتَّكْبِيرِ

[Machine] He used to perform a supererogatory prayer consisting of three units, in which he would neither sit nor recite the Tashahhud except in the last unit.

أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِثَلَاثٍ لَا يَجْلِسُ فِيهِنَّ وَلَا يَتَشَهَّدُ إِلَّا فِي آخِرِهِنَّ

Is there not for you a model pattern in me? And when they narrated this to him (Sa'd b. Hisham), he returned to his wife, though he had divorced her and made (people) witness to his reconciliation. He then came to Ibn 'Abbas and asked him about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ibn 'Abbas said: Should I not lead you to one who knows best amongst the people of the world about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: Who is it? He (Ibn 'Abbas) said: It is 'A'isha. So go to her and ask her (about Witr) and then come to me and inform me about her answer that she would give you. So I came to Hakim b. Aflah and requested him to take me to her. He said: I would not go to her, for I forbade her to speak anything (about the conflict) between the two groupS, but she refused (to accept my advice) and went (to participate in that corflict). I (requested) him (Hakim) with an oath to lead me to her. So we went to 'A'isha and we begged permission to meet her. She granted us permission and we went in. She said: Are you Hakim? (She recognised him.) He replied: Yes. She said: Who is there with you? He said: He is Sa'd b. Hisham. She said: Which Hisham? He said: He is Hisham b. 'Amir. She blessed him ('Amir) with mercy from Allah and spoke good of him (Qatada said that he died as a martyr in Uhud). I said: Mother of the Faithful, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: Don't you read the Qur'an? I said: Yes. Upon this she said: The character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the Qur'an. He said: I felt inclined to get up and not ask anything (further) till death. But then I changed my mind and said: Inform me about the observance (of the night prayer) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: Did you not recite:" O thou wrapped up"? He said: Yes. She said: Allah, the Exalted and the Glorious, made the observance of the night prayer at the beginning of this Surah obligatory. So the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him and his Companions around him observed this (night prayer) for one year. Allah held back the concluding portion of this Surah for twelve months in the Heaven till (at the end of this period) Allah revealed the concluding verses of this Surah which lightened (the burden of this prayer), and the night prayer became a supererogatory prayer after being an obligatory one. I said: Mother of the Faithful, inform me about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: I used to prepare tooth stick for him and water for his ablution, and Allah would rouse him to the extent He wished during the night. He would use the tooth stick, and perform ablution, and would offer nine rak'ahs, and would not sit but in the eighth one and would remember Allah, and praise Him and supplicate Him, then he would get up without uttering the salutation and pray the ninth rak'ah. He would then sit, remember, praise Him and supplicate Him and then utter a salutation loud enough for us to hear. He would then pray two rak'ahs sitting after uttering the salutation, and that made eleven rak'ahs. O my son, but when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew old and put on flesh, he observed Witr of seven, doing in the two rak'ahs as he had done formerly, and that made nine. O my son, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed prayer, he liked to keep on observing it, and when sleep or pain overpowered him and made it impossible (for him) to observe prayer in the night, he prayed twelve rak'ahs daring the day. I am not aware of Allah's Prophet ﷺ having recited the whole Qur'an during one single night, or praying through the night till morning, or fasting a complete month, except Ramadan. He (the narrator) said: I then went to Ibn 'Abbas and narrated to him the hadith (transmitted from her), and he said: She says the truth If I went to her and got into her presence, I would have listened to it orally from her. He said: If I were to know that you do not go to her. I would not have transmitted this hadith to you narrated by her. (Using translation from Muslim 746a)

أَنَّهُ طَلَّقَ امْرَأَتَهُ ثُمَّ ارْتَحَلَ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لِيَبِيعَ عَقَارًا لَهُ بِهَا وَيَجْعَلَهُ فِي السِّلَاحِ وَالْكُرَاعِ ثُمَّ يُجَاهِدُ الرُّومَ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ فَلَقِيَ رَهْطًا مِنْ قَوْمِهِ فَحَدَّثُوهُ أَنَّ رَهْطًا مِنْ قَوْمِهِ سِتَّةً أَرَادُوا ذَلِكَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ فِيكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ؟ فَنَهَاهُمْ عَنْ ذَلِكَ وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلَى رَجْعَتِهَا ثُمَّ رَجَعَ إِلَيْنَا فَأَخْبَرَنَا أَنَّهُ أَتَى ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ الْوِتْرِ فَقَالَ أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكَ بِأَعْلَمِ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ بِوِتْرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ إِيتِ عَائِشَةَ فَسَلْهَا ثُمَّ ارْجِعْ إِلَيَّ فَأَخْبِرْنِي بِرَدِّهَا عَلَيْكَ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ حَكِيمَ بْنَ أَفْلَحَ فَاسْتَلْحَقْتُهُ إِلَيْهَا فَقَالَ مَا أَنَا بِقَارِبِهَا إِنِّي نَهَيْتُهَا أَنْ تَقُولَ فِي هَاتَيْنِ الْبَيْعَتَيْنِ شَيْئًا فَأَبَتْ فِيهِمَا إِلَّا مُضِيًّا فَأَقْسَمْتُ فَجَاءَ مَعِي فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَتْ حَكِيمٌ؟ وَعَرَفَتْهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ أَوْ بَلَى قَالَتْ مَنْ هَذَا مَعَكَ؟ قَالَ سَعْدُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ قَالَتْ ابْنُ عَامِرٍ؟ فَتَرَحَّمَتْ عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَتْ نِعْمَ الْمَرْءُ كَانَ عَامِرٌ فَقُلْتُ يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْبِئِينِي عَنْ خُلُقِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ أَلَسْتَ تَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَتْ فَإِنَّ خُلُقَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ فَهَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَقُومَ فَبَدَا لِي قِيَامُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ أَلَسْتَ تَقْرَأُ هَذِهِ السُّورَةَ يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَتْ فَإِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ افْتَرَضَ قِيَامَ اللَّيْلِ فِي أَوَّلِ هَذِهِ السُّورَةِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَصْحَابُهُ حَوْلًا حَتَّى انْتَفَخَتْ أَقْدَامُهُمْ وَأَمْسَكَ اللهُ خَاتِمَتَهَا فِي السَّمَاءِ اثْنَيْ عَشَرَ شَهْرًا ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ التَّخْفِيفَ فِي آخِرِ هَذِهِ السُّورَةِ فَصَارَ قِيَامُ اللَّيْلِ تَطَوُّعًا مِنْ بَعْدِ فَرِيضَةٍ فَهَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَقُومَ ثُمَّ بَدَا لِي وِتْرُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قُلْتُ يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْبِئِينِي عَنْ وِتْرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ كُنَّا نَعُدُّ لَهُ سِوَاكَهُ وَطَهُورَهُ فَيَبْعَثُهُ اللهُ بِمَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَبْعَثَهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَيَتَسَوَّكُ ثُمَّ يَتَوَضَّأُ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي ثَمَانِ رَكَعَاتٍ لَا يَجْلِسُ فِيهِنَّ إِلَّا عِنْدَ الثَّامِنَةِ فَيَجْلِسُ وَيُذْكُرُ رَبَّهُ ﷻ وَيَدْعُو وَيَسْتَغْفِرُ ثُمَّ يَنْهَضُ وَلَا يُسَلِّمُ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي التَّاسِعَةَ فَيَقْعُدُ فَيَحْمَدُ رَبَّهُ وَيَذْكُرُهُ وَيَدْعُو ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ تَسْلِيمًا يُسْمِعُنَا ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَمَا يُسَلِّمُ فَتِلْكَ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يَا بُنَيَّ فَلَمَّا أَسَنَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَخَذَ اللَّحْمَ أَوْتَرَ بِسَبْعٍ ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَمَا يُسَلِّمُ فَتِلْكَ تِسْعٌ يَا بُنَيَّ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى صَلَاةً أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَدُومَ عَلَيْهَا وَكَانَ إِذَا شَغَلَهُ عَنْ قِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ نَوْمٌ أَوْ وَجَعٌ أَوْ مَرَضٌ صَلَّى مِنَ النَّهَارِ ثِنْتَيْ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً وَلَا أَعْلَمُ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ قَرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ كُلَّهُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ وَلَا قَامَ لَيْلَةً حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ وَمَا صَامَ شَهْرًا كَامِلًا غَيْرَ رَمَضَانَ فَأَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ بِحَدِيثِهَا فَقَالَ صَدَقَتْ أَمَا لَوْ كُنْتُ أَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهَا لَأَتَيْتُهَا حَتَّى تُشَافِهَنِي مُشَافَهَةً
