[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, teach me the sunnah of the Adhan and mention the Hadith in it." He said, "Call for the prayer and say: 'Hayya 'ala al-falah, Hayya 'ala al-falah.' If the morning prayer is due, say, 'As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm, as-salatu khayrun min an-nawm.' Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah."  

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ عَلِّمْنِي سُنَّةَ الْأَذَانِ وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ وَقَالَ فِيهِ حِيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ حِيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ فَإِنْ كَانَ صَلَاةُ الصُّبْحِ قُلِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ  

He (the prophet) taught me IQAMAH (to pronounce each phrase) twice: Allah is most great. Allah is most great. I testify that there is no god but Allah. I testify that there is no god but Allah; I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah: come to prayer, come to prayer: come to salvation, come to salvation: Allah is most great. Allah is great; there is no god but Allah. Abu Dawud said: The narrator ‘Abd al-Razzaq said; You pronounce IQAMAH for announcing the prayer; you must say twice: the time for prayer has come, the time for prayer has come. (The Prophet said to Abu Mahdhurah): did you listen (to me)? Abu Mahdhurah would not have the hair of his forehead cut, nor would he separate them (from him) because the Prophet ﷺ wiped over them. عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ نَحْوَهُ وَفِيهِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ فِي الْأُولَى مِنَ الصُّبْحِ  

[Machine] I heard him say, "How should I give the adhan (call to prayer) for the Prophet ﷺ?" So I used to say in the first adhan of Fajr after "hayya 'ala al-falah, hayya 'ala al-falah, as-salatu khayrun min an-nawm, as-salatu khayrun min an-nawm, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah." Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, narrating from Ali ibn Hamsad, narrating from Yazid ibn al-Haytham, narrating from Ibrahim ibn Abi Layth, narrating from al-Ashja'i, from Sufyan, who mentioned him. And Abu Sulayman's name was Hammam, the mu'adhdhin.  

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ كَيْفَ أُؤَذِّنُ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَكُنْتُ أَقُولُ فِي الْأَذَانِ الْأَوَّلِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ بَعْدَ حِيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ حِيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَمْشَاذٍ ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ الْهَيْثَمِ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ أَبِي اللَّيْثِ ثنا الْأَشْجَعِيُّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ فَذَكَرَهُ وَأَبُو سُلَيْمَانَ اسْمُهُ هَمَّامٌ الْمُؤَذِّنُ  

[Machine] Saad used to give the call to prayer for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Hafs narrated that my family told me that Bilal came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to give the call to prayer for Fajr prayer, and they said that he was asleep. So, Bilal called out in a loud voice, "Prayer is better than sleep." So, it was confirmed for the Fajr prayer.  

أَنَّ سَعْدًا كَانَ يُؤَذِّنُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ حَفْصٌ فَحَدَّثَنِي أَهْلِي أَنَّ بِلَالًا أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَيُؤْذِنَهُ بِصَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ فَقَالُوا إِنَّهُ نَائِمٌ فَنَادَى بِلَالٌ بِأَعْلَى صَوْتِهِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ فَأُقِرَّتْ فِي صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ  

[Machine] Then Bilal added in the call to prayer that prayer is better than sleep. This is because Bilal came after the first call to prayer for the Fajr prayer to inform the Prophet ﷺ about the prayer. It was said to him that the Prophet ﷺ was sleeping, so Bilal proclaimed in a loud voice that prayer is better than sleep. It was then confirmed in the call to prayer for the Fajr prayer.  

أَنْ قَالَ ثُمَّ زَادَ بِلَالٌ فِي التَّأْذِينِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ بِلَالًا أَتَى بَعْدَمَا أَذَّنَ التَّأْذِينَةَ الْأُولَى مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ لِيُؤذنَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَائِمٌ فَأَذَّنَ بِلَالٌ بِأَعْلَى صَوْتِهِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ فَأُقِرَّتْ فِي التَّأْذِينِ لِصَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ  

[Machine] From the Sunnah, when the Muadhin says in the Adhan of Fajr, "Hayya 'ala al-falah" (Come to success), the Salah is better than sleep. The Salah is better than sleep. Allah is the greatest. Allah is the greatest. There is no deity but Allah. And thus.  

مِنَ السُّنَّةِ إِذَا قَالَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ فِي أَذَانِ الْفَجْرِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ قَالَ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَكَذَلِكَ  

[Machine] I was with my wife in her bed on a cold morning when the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for the Fajr prayer. When I heard it, I said, if he had said: "Whoever sits, there is no harm", but when he said: "Prayer is better than sleep", he said: "Whoever sits, there is no harm."  

كُنْتُ مَعَ امْرَأَتِي فِي مِرْطِهَا فِي غَدَاةٍ بَارِدَةٍ فَنَادَى مُنَادِي رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ فَلَمَّا سَمِعْتُ قُلْتُ لَوْ قَالَ وَمَنْ قَعَدَ فَلَا حَرَجَ قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَالَ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ قَالَ وَمَنْ قَعَدَ فَلَا حَرَجَ  

[Machine] "He used to say, 'O farmer, wake up! Prayer is better than sleep. Prayer is better than sleep. In the first Adhan, it is recited twice, which means in the morning.'"  

أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ حِيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ حِيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ فِي الْأَذَانِ الْأَوَّلِ مَرَّتَيْنِ يَعْنِي فِي الصُّبْحِ  

[Machine] "He said to his Mu'adhin, 'When you reach the call to prayer for Fajr, say prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep.'"  

أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِمُؤَذِّنِهِ إِذَا بَلَغْتَ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ فِي الْفَجْرِ فَقُلِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ
