[Machine] They asked Sahl bin Saad, "From which part of the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did you see him? He replied, "No one among the people knows more about it than me. His acts were like the furthest part of the forest. Such and such a slave of such and such (person) was his Mawla. I indeed saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he mounted the pulpit, faced the Qibla, glorified Allah (by saying Takbir) and read the Qur'an. Then he bowed, descended and went to Qahqaha, where he prostrated. Then he ascended and recited the Qur'an, bowed again and descended to Qahqaha, where he prostrated. This tradition is found in a sound Hadith reported by Ibn Uyainah.  

سَأَلُوا سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ ؓ مِنْ أِيِّ شَيْءٍ مِنْبَرُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ النَّاسِ أَحَدٌ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي مِنْ أَثْلِ الْغَابَةِ عَمِلَهُ لَهُ فُلَانٌ مَوْلَى فُلَانَةَ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ حَيْثُ صَعَدَ عَلَيْهِ اسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَكَبَّرَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ ثُمَّ نَزَلَ الْقَهْقَرَى فَسَجَدَ ثُمَّ صَعَدَ فَقَرَأَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ ثُمَّ نَزَلَ الْقَهْقَرَى فَسَجَدَ أَخْرَجَاهُ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ  

[Machine] By Allah, I truly know what it is, and indeed, I saw it on the first day it was born. And on the first day the Messenger of Allah sat on it, the Messenger of Allah sent it to a woman named Sahlah and asked her to have her servant, the carpenter, make some wooden sticks for me to sit on when I speak to the people. So she ordered and he made them out of the branches of the forest. Then she brought them and sent them to the Messenger of Allah, and he commanded them to be placed here. Then I saw the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , praying on it and saying takbeer while he was on it. Then he performed rukoo' while he was on it. Then he went down to al-Qahhara (a valley in Makkah) and prostrated at the base of the pulpit. Then he returned, and when he finished he faced the people and said, "O people, I did this so that you may follow in my footsteps and learn from my prayer."  

وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُ مِمَّا هُوَ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ أَوَّلَ يَوْمٍ وُضِعَ وَأَوَّلَ يَوْمٍ جَلَسَ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى فُلَانَةَ امْرَأَةٍ قَدْ سَمَّاهَا سَهْلٌ أَنْ مُرِي غُلَامَكِ النَّجَّارَ أَنْ يَعْمَلَ لِي أَعْوَادًا أَجْلِسُ عَلَيْهِنَّ إِذَا كَلَّمْتُ النَّاسَ فَأَمَرَتْهُ فَعَمِلَهَا مِنْ طَرْفَاءِ الْغَابَةِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِهَا فَأَرْسَلَتْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَمَرَ بِهَا فَوُضِعَتْ هَهُنَا ثُمَّ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَّى عَلَيْهَا وَكَبَّرَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ رَكَعَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ نَزَلَ الْقَهْقَرَى فَسَجَدَ فِي أَصْلِ الْمِنْبَرِ ثُمَّ عَادَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا صَنَعْتُ هَذَا لِتَأْتَمُّوا بِي وَلِتَعْلَمُوا صَلَاتِي  

[Machine] That Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) once passed by people in the market and saw Abu Mas'ud in a shirt. He took hold of it and pulled it until Abu Mas'ud finished his prayer. Then he said, "Don't you know that they used to be prohibited from doing so?" or "Don't you know that it used to be prohibited?" He said, "Yes, I remember when you reminded me of it." And Ziyad ibn 'Abdullah al-Bakkai narrated it from al-A'mash in a similar meaning of the narration of Ya'la. However, Abu Mas'ud said to him, "Don't you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the Imam to stand above while the people stood behind him?" 5233 Abu 'Abdullah al-Hafiz reported to us, Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq reported to us, Muhammad ibn Ghaleb reported to us, Zakariya ibn Yahya reported to us, and it was mentioned and narrated from another aspect with some discrepancies in it for this narration.  

أَنَّ حُذَيْفَةَ ؓ أَمَّ النَّاسَ بِالْمَدَائِنِ عَلَى دُكَّانٍ فَأَخَذَ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ بِقَمِيصِهِ فَجَبَذَهُ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ قَالَ أَلَمْ تَعْلَمْ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يُنْهَوْنَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ أَوْ قَالَ أَوْ لَمْ تَعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُنْهَى عَنْ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ بَلَى قَدْ ذَكَرْتُ حِينَ مَدَدْتَنِي وَرَوَاهُ زِيَادُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْبَكَّائِيُّ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ بِمَعْنَى رِوَايَةِ يَعْلَى إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَهُ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ أَلَمْ تَعْلَمْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى أَنْ يَقُومَ الْإِمَامُ فَوْقَ وَيَبْقَى النَّاسُ خَلْفَهُ 5233 أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ غَالِبٍ ثنا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى ثنا زِيَادُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَذَكَرَهُ وَرُوِيَ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ مُسْنَدًا مَعَ اخْتِلَافٍ فِيهِ لِهَذَا  

[Machine] He said, "I do not know, has the period of your commitment become longer or have you forgotten? Have you not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The imam should not pray after he has stumbled in what his companions have taught him.' Thus said Salman instead of Abu Mas'ud, and it was narrated from another source with some variations in the wording."  

لَهُ مَا أَدْرِي أَطَالَ بِكَ الْعَهْدُ أَمْ نَسِيتَ؟ أَمَا سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَا يُصَلِّي الْإِمَامُ عَلَى نَشَزٍ مِمَّا عَلَيْهِ أَصْحَابُهُ كَذَا قَالَ سَلْمَانُ بَدَلَ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ وَرُوِيَ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ مُسْنَدًا مَعَ اخْتِلَافٍ فِيهِ لِمَا مَضَى  

‘Ammar came forward and stood on a shop (or a beach) and prayed while the people stood on a lower place than he. Hudaifah came forward and took him by the hands and Ammar followed him till Hudaifah brought him down. When ‘Ammar finished his prayer. Hudaifah said to him: Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) say: When a man leads the people in prayer, he must not stand in a position higher than theirs, or words to that effect? ‘Ammar replied : that is why I followed you when you took me by the hand.
