3. Ṣalāh (Ritual Prayer)

٣۔ كِتَابُ الصَّلَاةِ

3.182 [Machine] Raising the hands during rukoo' and when raising the head from it.

٣۔١٨٢ بَابُ رَفْعِ الْيَدَيْنِ عِنْدَ الرُّكُوعِ وَعِنْدَ رَفْعِ الرَّأْسِ مِنْهُ

bayhaqi:2501[Chain 1] Abū Zakariyyā b. Abū Isḥāq al-Muzakkī Qirāʾah And ʾAbū Muḥammad ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf al-Aṣbahānī Imlāʾ > Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb > al-Rabīʿ b. [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to raise his hands parallel to his shoulders when starting the prayer. And when he raised his head from bowing, he raised his hands in the same way. He would say, "Allah hears the one who praises Him, O our Lord, and all praise is for You." And he would not do that (raise his hands) during prostration. This is the wording of the Hadith of Al-Qa'nabi.

[Machine] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he stood in prayer, he raised his hands until they were parallel to his shoulders. Then he would say the takbir (Allahu Akbar). He used to do that when he would start the rukoo' (bowing) and when he raised his head from rukoo'. He would say, "Allah listens to the one who praises Him." However, he did not do that while in prostration. Ibn Al-Mubarak also used to raise his hands in this manner in the five daily prayers, the voluntary prayers, the two Eid prayers, and funeral prayers. And Abu Abdullah mentioned this elsewhere. Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Hamdan and Ibrahim ibn Hilal and Ali ibn Al-Hasan ibn Shaqiq narrated the same from Ibn Al-Mubarak through Yunus, and he mentioned it in the same way. However, he did not mention Ibn Al-Mubarak's action.

He saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raising his hands at the time of beginning the prayer and reciting takbir, and according to Hammam (the narrator), the hands were lifted opposite to ears. He (the Holy Prophet) then wrapped his hands in his cloth and placed his right hand over his left hand. And when he was about to bow down, he brought out his hands from the cloth, and then lifted them, and then recited takbir and bowed down, and when (he came back to the erect position) he recited:" Allah listened to him who praised Him." And when he prostrated, he prostrated between his two palms. (Using translation from Muslim 401)

[Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I want to see how you pray." He faced the qibla, said takbeer, and raised his hands until they were in line with his shoulders. Then he took his left hand with his right hand. When he wanted to bow, he raised his hands until they were in line with his shoulders. When he bowed, he placed his hands on his knees. When he wanted to raise from the rukoo', he raised his hands until they were in line with his shoulders. When he prostrated, he placed his hands from his face in that position. When he sat, he placed his left foot under him and placed his left hand on his left thigh and placed his right elbow on his right thigh and clasped two fingers and pointed with the index finger. This was narrated by Sufyan Ath-Thawri, Shu'bah bin Al-Hajjaj, Abu Awana, Ghilan bin Jamih, Abu Al-Ahwas, Zaidah bin Qudamah, and a group of narrators from Aasim bin Kulayb, except that some of them said it was the height of his ears, and Ibn Uyaynah agreed with Abdul Wahid bin Ziyad in regards to the position of the shoulders.

I am one among you who is more informed of the way the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed. They said: Why, By Allah, you did not follow him more than us, nor did you remain in his company longer than us? He said: Yes. They said: Then describe (how the Prophet prayed). He said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to pray, he raised his hands so as to bring them opposite his shoulders, and uttered the takbir (Allah is the most great), until every bone rested in its place properly: then re recited (some verses from the Quran); then he uttered the takbir (Allah is most great), raising his hands so as to bring them opposite his shoulders; then he bowed; placing the palms of his hands on his knees and keeping himself straight, neither raising nor lowering his head; then raised his head saying: “Allah listens to him who praise Him”; then raised his hands so as to bring them exactly opposite to his shoulders; then uttered: “Allah is most great”; then lowered himself to the ground (in prostration), keeping his arms away from his sides; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it, and opened the toes when he prostrated: then he uttered: “Allah is most great”; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it so that every bone returned to its place properly; then he did the same in the second (rak’ah). At the end of the two Rak’ahs he stood up and uttered the takbir (Allah is most great), raising his hands so as to bring them opposite to his shoulders; then he bowed, placing the palms of his hands on his knees and keeping himself straight, neither raising or lowering his head: then raised his head saying: “Allah listens to him who praises Him”; then raised his hands so as to bring them exactly opposite his shoulders; then uttered: “Allah is most great”; then lowered himself to the ground (in prostration), keeping his arms away from his sides; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it, and opened the toes when he prostrated himself; then he prostrated; then uttered: “Allah is most great”; then raised his head, bent his left foot and sat on it so that every bone returned to its place properly; then he did the same in the second (rak’ah). At the end of two rak’ahs he stood up and uttered the takbir (Allah is most great), raising his hands so as to bring them opposite to his shoulders in the way he had uttered the Takbir (Allah is most great) at the beginning of the prayer; then he did that in the remainder of his prayer; and after prostration which if followed by the taslim (salutation) he out his left foot and sat on his left hip. They said: You have spoken the truth. This is how he(peace be upon him) used to pray. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 730)

Abu Humaid, Abu Usaid, Sahl. B Sa’d and Muhammad b. Maslamah (once) got together and discussed how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to offer his prayer. Abu Humaid said: I am more informed than any of you regarding the prayer offered by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he mentioned a part of it, and said: He then bowed and placed his hands upon his knees as if he caught hold of them; and bent them, keeping (his arms) away from his sides. He them prostrated himself and placed his nose and forehead (on the ground); and kept his arms away from his side, and placed his palms (on the ground opposite his shoulders; he then raised his head that every bone returned to its proper place; (he then prostrated twice) until he finished this prostrations). Then he sat down and spread out his left foot, putting forward the front of his right foot towards the qiblah placing the palm of his right hand on his right knee, and the palm of his left hand on his left knee, and he pointed with his finger. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by Ibn al-Mubarak from Fulaih who heard ‘Abbas . Sahl narrating it; but I do not remember it. I think he made the mention of ‘Isa b. ‘Abd Allah who heard ‘Abbas b. Sahl saying: I accompanied Abu Humaid al-Sa’idi. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 734)

[Machine] I prayed behind Ayoub Al-Sakhtiani, and he used to raise his hands when he started the prayer, when he bowed, and when he raised his head from the bowing position. I asked him about it, and he said, "I saw Ata ibn Abi Rabah raising his hands when he started the prayer, when he bowed, and when he raised his head from the bowing position." I asked him, and he said, "I prayed behind Abdullah ibn Zubayr, and he used to raise his hands when he started the prayer, when he bowed, and when he raised his head from the bowing position." I asked him, and he said, "I prayed behind Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, and he used to raise his hands when he started the prayer, when he bowed, and when he raised his head from the bowing position." The narrators of this hadith are trustworthy.

And the Prophet ﷺ took from Gabriel, and Gabriel took it from Allah, the Blessed and Exalted. Abdur-Razzaq said: Ibn Jurayj said, "He raised his hands."

It was narrated from ‘Ali bin Abi Talib ؓ that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to offer the prescribed prayer, he would say Allahu Akbar and raise his hands to shoulder height; he did the same when he finished reciting and wanted to bow, and he did it when he raised his head from bowing. He did not raise his hands when sitting in any part of his prayer, but when he stood up following the two prostrations, he raised his hands in the same manner and said Allahu Akbar. [Machine] When this verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone]." [Al-Kawthar: 2], the Prophet ﷺ asked Jibril: "What is this nahirah (sacrifice) that my Lord has commanded me?" Jibril replied: "It is not a sacrifice. Rather, it is when you raise your hands after saying the takbeer for prayer, when you bow, and when you raise your head from the rukoo'. Verily, it is our prayer and the prayer of the angels in the seven heavens." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Raising the hands from the interlacing of the fingers, as Allah the Blessed and Exalted said: 'So they did not render their submission to Allah, nor did they supplicate.' [Al-Mu'minun: 76]." This has been narrated and relying on what has passed, and with Allah is Tawfiq.
