We were sitting in the company of Sa'id b. 'Ubida when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us. Bashir b. S'ad said: Allah has commanded us to bless you. Messenger of Allah! But how should we bless you? He (the narrator) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept quiet (and we were so much perturbed over his silence) that we wished we had not asked him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: (For blessing me) say:" 0 Allah, bless Muhammad and the members of his household as Thou didst bless the mernbers of Ibrahim's household. Grant favours to Muhammad and the members of his household as Thou didst grant favours to the members of the household of Ibrahim in the world. Thou art indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious" ; and salutation as you know. (Using translation from Muslim 405)   

أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ فِي مَجْلِسِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ بَشِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَمَرَنَا اللهُ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْنَا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَالسَّلَامُ كَمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى  

[Machine] And it narrated to me about the prayer on the Prophet ﷺ, that when a Muslim prays upon him in his prayer, Muhammad ibn Ibrahim narrates from Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Zaid ibn Abd Rabbih, from Abu Mas'ood 'Uqbah ibn 'Amr, and he said: A man approached and sat in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while we were with him. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, as for the greeting upon you, we know it. So how do we send prayers upon you when we have already prayed upon you in our prayers and Allah has sent prayers upon you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent until we wished that the man did not ask him. Then he said, "When you have prayed upon me, then say, 'O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, and upon the family of Muhammad, as You have sent prayers upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. And bless Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, and the family of Muhammad, as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are full of praise and majesty.' Their wording is equal." Abu Abdullah said, "This is an authentic hadith regarding mentioning the prayer upon the Prophet ﷺ in the prayers." and in the prayer.

2850: Abu Bakr ibn al-Harith al-Faqih informed us, 'Ali ibn 'Umar al-Hafidh narrated to us from Abu Bakr ibn Ziyad al-Naysaboori, from Abu al-Azhar Ahmad ibn al-Azhar, who mentioned it in a similar manner. Then 'Ali said, "This is a good continuous chain of narration." The Sheikh said, "It has also been narrated from Zuheir ibn Harb, from Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim, in a similar manner."  

وَحَدَّثَنِي فِي الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِذَا الْمَرْءُ الْمُسْلِمُ صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ فِي صَلَاتِهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو وَقَالَ أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ حَتَّى جَلَسَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَمَّا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ إِذَا نَحْنُ صَلَّيْنَا عَلَيْكَ فِي صَلَاتِنَا صَلَّى الله عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ فَصَمَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى أَحْبَبْنَا أَنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا أَنْتُمْ صَلَّيْتُمْ عَلَيَّ فَقُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ لَفْظُهُمَا سَوَاءٌ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ بِذِكْرِ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي الصَّلَوَاتِ

2850 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ الْفَقِيهُ أنبأ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ هُوَ ابْنُ زِيَادٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ثنا أَبُو الْأَزْهَرِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْأَزْهَرِ فَذَكَرَهُ بِنَحْوِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ هَذَا إِسْنَادٌ حَسَنٌ مُتَّصِلٌ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَقَدْ رُوِّي عَنْ زُهَيْرِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بِنَحْوِهِ

لِي أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا فَقُلْنَا لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ فَقَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ  

O Allah, bless Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as didst bless Abraham. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious. O Allah grant favours of Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst grant favour to Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by al-Zubair b. ‘Adi as narrated by Mis’ar , except that his version goes: As Thou didst bless Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious. And grant favours to Muhammad. He then narrated the tradition in full. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 978)   

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ  

[Machine] We said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is this greeting, so how should we pray upon you?" He said, "Say, 'O Allah, send your blessings upon Muhammad, your servant and Messenger, as you have sent blessings upon Ibrahim, and bless Muhammad as you have blessed Ibrahim. This is also a reference to what was mentioned in the hadith of Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah."  

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا السَّلَامُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَفِي هَذَا أَيْضًا إِشَارَةٌ إِلَى مَا أَشَارَ إِلَيْهِ حَدِيثُ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ وَقَدْ  

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man praying without praising Allah, glorifying Him, and sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ , and then he left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ exclaimed, "Hurry, call him back!" The man was summoned and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, and to others present, "When any of you pray, let them begin with praising their Lord, glorifying Him, and sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ , and then let them supplicate with whatever they wish."  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ رَأَى رَجُلًا صَلَّى لَمْ يَحْمَدِ اللهَ وَلَمْ يُمَجِّدْهُ وَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَانْصَرَفَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَجِلَ هَذَا فَدَعَاهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ وَلِغَيْرِهِ إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَبْدَأْ بِتَحْمِيدِ رَبِّهِ ﷻ وَالثَّنَاءِ عَلَيْهِ وَلْيُصَلِّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ثُمَّ يَدْعُو بِمَا شَاءَ  

[Machine] When we used to sit between the two prostrations during prayer, we did not know what to say except to praise and glorify Allah, and mention His name. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us comprehensive and concise supplications. He came to us with a smile on his face and said, "When you sit between the two prostrations, say, 'Greetings, prayers, and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.' Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) said, 'When he says, 'Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah,' every righteous servant or sent Prophet is blessed, and then he starts by praising Allah in the manner befitting Him, and by sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ . Then he may make other supplications."  

كُنَّا إِذَا جَلَسْنَا بَيْنَ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ لَا نَدْرِي مَا نَقُولُ إِلَّا أَنْ نُسَبِّحَ وَنُكَبِّرَ وَنَذْكُرَ اللهَ وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عُلِّمَ جَوَامِعَ الْخَيْرِ وَفَوَاتِحَهُ فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ إِذَا جَلَسْتُمْ بَيْنَ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُولُوا التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ وَإِذَا قَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ فَقَدْ أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ أَوْ نَبِيٍّ مُرْسَلٍ ثُمَّ يُبْتَدَأُ بِالثَّنَاءِ عَلَى اللهِ ﷻ وَالْمَدْحَةِ لَهُ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ وَبِالصَّلَاةِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ثُمَّ يَسْأَلُ بَعْدُ
