while a man was praying letting his lower garment trail, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: Go and perform ablution. He, therefore, went and performed ablution and then returned. He (the prophet) again said: Go and perform ablution. He again went, performed ablution and returned. A man said to him (the prophet): Messenger of Allah, why did you order him to perform ablution? He said: he was praying with lower garment trailing, and does not accept the prayer of a man who lets his lower garment trail. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 638)   

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ بَيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ يُصَلِّي مُسْبِلٌ إِزَارَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اذْهَبْ فَتَوَضَّأْ فَذَهَبَ فَتَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اذْهَبْ فَتَوَضَّأْ فَذَهَبَ فَتَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ مَا لَكَ أَمَرْتَهُ يَتَوَضَّأُ ثُمَّ سَكَتَّ عَنْهُ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ يُصَلِّي وَهُوَ مُسْبِلٌ إِزَارَهُ وَإِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ لَا يَقْبَلُ صَلَاةَ رَجُلٍ مُسْبِلٍ إِزَارَهُ هَكَذَا  

[Machine] A man from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ narrated that while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man started to pray. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Go and perform ablution." So he performed ablution and then started to pray again. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Go and perform ablution." So a man said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the matter? You commanded him to perform ablution and then remained silent." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I commanded him to perform ablution because he was dragging his garment, and Allah does not accept the prayer of a man who drags his garment."  

أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَعَلَ رَجُلٌ يُصَلِّي فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اذْهَبْ فَتَوَضَّأْ فَتَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ عَادَ يُصَلِّي فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اذْهَبْ فَتَوَضَّأْ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا شَأْنُكَ أَمَرْتَهُ أَنْ يَتَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ سَكَتَّ عَنْهُ؟ فَقَالَ إِنِّي إِنَّمَا أَمَرْتُهُ أَنْ يَتَوَضَّأَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ مُسْبِلًا إِزَارَهُ وَلَا يَقْبَلُ اللهُ صَلَاةَ رَجُلٍ مُسْبِلٍ إِزَارَهُ  

[Machine] "Verily, the one who drags his garment during prayer is not from Allah, neither in terms of permissibility nor prohibition. Abū ʿAlī al-Rūdhabārī informed us that Muḥammad ibn Bakr narrated to us that Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī said: 'This was narrated by a group from ʿĀṣim, attributed to Ibn Masʿūd. Among them are Ḥammād ibn Salama, Ḥammād ibn Zayd, Abū al-ʾAḥwaṣ, and Abū Muʿāwiyah.' The scholar said: 'And in the authentic and absolute narrations prohibiting dragging the garments, there is evidence of its disapproval in prayer and other acts of worship.'"  

إِنَّ الَّذِي يَجُرُّ ثَوْبَهُ مِنَ الْخُيَلَاءِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ لَيْسَ مِنَ اللهِ فِي حِلٍّ وَلَا حَرَامٍ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ السِّجِسْتَانِيُّ قَالَ رَوَى هَذَا جِمَاعَةٌ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ مَوْقُوفًا عَلَى ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ مِنْهُمْ حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ وَحَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ وَأَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ وَأَبُومُعَاوِيَةَ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَفِي الْأَحَادِيثِ الثَّابِتَةِ الْمُطْلَقَةِ فِي النَّهْيِ عَنْ جَرِّ الْإِزَارِ دَلِيلٌ عَلَى كَرَاهِيَتِهِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَغَيْرِهَا
