3.729 [Machine] Praying Behind Two Imams, One After the Other

٣۔٧٢٩ بَابُ الصَّلَاةِ بِإِمَامَينِ أَحَدُهُمَا بَعْدَ الْآخَرِ

bayhaqi:5254Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbdullāh b. Bishrān al-ʿAdl> Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad al-Ṣaffār > Saʿdān b. Naṣr > Sufyān > Abū Ḥāzim

[Machine] On the authority of Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi, who was one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "An incident occurred between the tribes of Aws and Khazraj, where they exchanged some harsh words. The news reached the Prophet ﷺ , so he went to them and found himself restricted. Bilal then called the Adhan (the Islamic call to prayer), and the Prophet ﷺ was still restricted. When he was restricted, he proceeded to establish the prayer. Abu Bakr went forward to lead the people in prayer, and the Prophet ﷺ came from his confinement. People made space for him until he reached the row behind Abu Bakr. The people clapped, but Abu Bakr did not turn during the prayer. When Abu Bakr heard the applause, he turned and saw the Prophet ﷺ making a gesture to him to stay where he was. Abu Bakr raised his head towards the sky and the Quraysh turned their heels. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advanced and led the prayer with them. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the prayer, he said to Abu Bakr, 'What prevented you from staying in your place?' Abu Bakr replied, 'Would Allah permit Ibn Abi Quhafa (referring to himself) to be standing in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'What was the matter with you when you clapped during your prayer? Clapping is for women. If something happens to one of you in your prayer, say 'Subhan Allah' (glory be to Allah)."

[Machine] And when he passed between the two rows, he would stand up. If he saw any flaw, he would say "Stand straight until there is no flaw in you." Then he would proceed and say the takbir. It is possible that he would recite Surah Yusuf or Surah An-Nahl or something similar in the first raka'ah until the people gathered. He would say, "It is just that I made the takbir." I heard him say, "The dog has killed me or the dog has eaten me when he was stabbed." Then the fever flew off with a double-edged dagger that did not pass by anyone on the right or left except that it stabbed him until it stabbed thirteen men and nine of them died. When a Muslim man saw that, he threw him a cloak. When the fever thought that he had been caught, he stabbed himself and said, "Umar handle this." So Umar came forward and said, "Who will succeed Umar?" He had seen what he had seen. As for the vicinity of the mosque, they did not know anything except that they had lost the voice of Umar when they were saying, "Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah." So Abdullah bin Awf led them in a light prayer and mentioned the hadith.

[Machine] "So I saw Umar stretching out his hand and saying, 'Catch the dog, for it has killed me.' Then a man came from behind him and grabbed him. Umar was carried to his house, and a doctor came to him and said, 'Which drink do you prefer?' He said, 'Nabidh (a non-alcoholic beverage made from dates).' So he was given Nabidh to drink, and one of his wounds discharged pus. He said, 'This is the pus of blood.' Then he was given milk to drink, and he said, 'Wash, O Amir al-Mu'minin (Commander of the Believers), with what you were advised.' By Allah, I do not see you dying except as a martyr!' And K'ab came to him and said, 'Did I not tell you that you will not die except as a martyr, while you were asking me where I am and I am in the Arabian Peninsula?' So a man said, 'Perform the prayer, O servants of Allah. The sun is about to rise.' They rushed until they brought 'Abdul Rahman ibn 'Awf forward, and he recited the shortest two Surahs in the Quran, 'Al-Asr' and 'Inna Ataina Ka Al-Kawthar' (indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar). This is what Abu Ishaq said, and this is also."

[Machine] After that, O people, I performed ablution for prayer and I passed by a woman from my family. There were feelings between me and her that Allah had decreed. When I was in my prayer, I found wetness, so I became hesitant between two matters: either I shy away from you and take the risk with Allah, or I shy away from Allah and take the risk with you. It was that I shy away from Allah and take the risk with you which was more beloved to me. So I left and performed ablution again and renewed my prayer. Whoever does what I have done, then let him do as I have done. And it has been narrated in the legality of istikharah, from Ali.
