[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Gabriel visited me twice at the house, and he mentioned a hadith in which he led me in the Isha prayer in the first third of the night, meaning in the last visit."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَمَّنِي جِبْرِيلُ عِنْدَ الْبَيْتِ مَرَّتَيْنِ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ وَفِيهِ وَصَلَّى بِيَ الْعِشَاءَ ثُلُثَ اللَّيْلِ الْأَوَّلَ يَعْنِي فِي الْمَرَّةِ الْآخِرَةِ  

[Machine] That a person asked the Prophet ﷺ and he did not respond to him until he ordered Bilal to call the prayer. Bilal then called the prayer for the evening prayer when darkness had disappeared. The next day, he mentioned the incident and said: "He prayed the evening prayer until the third of the night." Then he said, "Where is the person asking about the timing of prayer? The timing is in between these two (mentioned times)."  

أَنَّ سَائِلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ شَيْئًا حَتَّى أَمَرَ بِلَالًا فَأَقَامَ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ فِيهِ وَأَمَرَ بِلَالًا فَأَقَامَ الْعِشَاءَ حِينَ غَابَ الشَّفَقُ فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنَ الْغَدِ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ فِيهِ وَصَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ إِلَى ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ عَنْ وَقْتِ الصَّلَاةِ الْوَقْتُ فِيمَا بَيْنَ هَذَيْنِ  

You observe with us the prayer. He commanded Bilal, and he uttered the call to prayer in the darkness of night preceding daybreak and he said the morning prayer till dawn had appeared. He then commanded him (Bilal) to call for the noon prayer when the sun had declined from the zenith. He then commanded him (Bilal) to call for the afternoon prayer when the sun was high. He then commanded him for the evening prayer when the sun had set. He then commanded him for the night prayer when the twilight had disappeared. Then on the next day he commanded him (to call for prayer) when there was light in the morning. He then commanded him (to call) for the noon prayer when the extreme heat was no more. He then commanded him for the afternoon prayer when the sun was bright and clear and yellowness did not blend with it. He then commanded him to observe the sunset prayer. He then commanded him for the night prayer when a third part of the night bad passed or a bit less than that. Harami (the narrator of this hadith) was in doubt about that part of the mentioned hadith which concerned the portion of the night. When it was dawn, he (the Holy Prophet) said: Where is the inquirer (who inquired about the times of prayer and added): Between (these two extremes) is the time for prayer. أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ مَوَاقِيتِ الصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ اشْهَدْ مَعَنْا الصَّلَاةَ فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِلَالًا فَأَذَّنَ بِغَلَسٍ فَصَلَّى الصُّبْحَ ثُمَّ أَمَرَهُ بِالظُّهْرِ حِينَ زَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَنْ بَطْنِ السَّمَاءِ ثُمَّ أَمَرَهُ بِالْعَصْرِ وَالشَّمْسُ مُرْتَفِعَةٌ ثُمَّ أَمَرَهُ بِالْمَغْرِبِ حِينَ وَجَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ ثُمَّ أَمَرَهُ بِالْعَشَاءِ حِينَ وَجَبَ الشَّفَقُ ثُمَّ أَمَرَهُ بِالْغَدِ فَنَوَّرَ بِالصُّبْحِ ثُمَّ أَمَرَهُ بِالظُّهْرِ فَأَبْرَدَ ثُمَّ أَمَرَهُ بِالْعَصْرِ وَالشَّمْسُ بَيْضَاءُ نَقِيَّةٌ لَمْ يُخَالِطْهَا صُفْرَةٌ ثُمَّ أَمَرَهُ بِالْمَغْرِبِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقَعَ الشَّفَقُ ثُمَّ أَمَرَهُ بِالْعِشَاءِ عِنْدَ ذَهَابِ ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ بَعْضِهِ شَكَّ أَبُو رَوْحٍ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ قَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ؟ مَا بَيْنَ مَا رَأَيْتَ وَقْتٌ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wore a black cloak until Umar called out to him. He said, "The prayer has been called, women and children have fallen asleep." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and said, "No one on earth is waiting for it except you. It will not be prayed anywhere else today except in Madinah." They used to pray in the darkness between the disappearance of the evening twilight and the first third of the night.  

اعْتَمَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِالْعَتَمَةِ حَتَّى نَادَاهُ عُمَرُ فَقَالَ الصَّلَاةَ نَامَ النِّسَاءُ وَالصِّبْيَانُ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَا يَنْتَظِرُهَا أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ غَيْرُكُمْ وَلَا تُصَلَّى يَوْمَئِذٍ إِلَّا بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَكَانُوا يُصَلُّونَ الْعَتَمَةُ فِيمَا بَيْنَ أَنْ يَغِيبَ شَفَقُ اللَّيْلِ إِلَى ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ الْأَوَّلِ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said and then mentioned the hadith in which he said, "The time of Isha prayer is until midnight."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ فِيهِ وَقْتُ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ إِلَى نِصْفِ اللَّيْلِ  

[Machine] He was asked whether the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wear a ring, and he said, "Yes, he would delay the prayer of Isha (Night Prayer) until the middle of the night. When he finished praying, he would face us and say, 'People have already prayed and gone to sleep, while you have been in prayer since you awaited the prayer.' It was as if I could see the brilliance of his ring."  

أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ هَلِ اصْطَنَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَاتَمًا؟ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ أَخَّرَ الصَّلَاةَ صَلَاةَ الْعِشَاءِ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ إِلَى شَطْرِ اللَّيْلِ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ قَدْ صَلُّوا وَرَقَدُوا وَإِنَّكُمْ لَنْ تَزَالُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ مُنْذُ انْتَظَرْتُمُ الصَّلَاةَ فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى وَبِيضِ خَاتَمِهِ  

[Machine] We (or I) watched the Prophet ﷺ during a night until he was close to half of the night. Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ came and performed Salah (prayer). He said, "It is as if I am looking at the white ring of his silver ring." And in another narration of Abu Dawood ﷺ , it is mentioned that this continued until the remaining part of the night (i.e., until the night was almost over). And by implication...  

نَظَرْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ لَيْلَةً حَتَّى كَانَ قَرِيبًا مِنْ نِصْفِ اللَّيْلِ فَجَاءَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى قَالَ فَكَأَنَّمَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى وَبِيضِ خَاتَمِهِ حَلْقَةُ فِضَّةٍ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي دَاوُدَ حَتَّى مَضَى شَطْرُ اللَّيْلِ وَالْبَاقِي بِمَعْنَاهُ  

[Machine] He was asked, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ have a ring?" He ﷺ said, "Yes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delayed the night prayer until half the night had passed or close to half the night, then he came and said, "The people have prayed and gone to sleep, and you will remain in prayer as long as you wait for the prayer." Anas said, "It was as if I can still see the white ring on his finger made of silver," and he pointed with his left hand. He described it as having a short make. Abu Salih bin Abi Tahir informed us, narrating from my grandfather Yahya bin Mansur Al-Qadi, who narrated from Ahmad bin Salamah, who narrated from Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Nafi, who narrated from Zaid Al-Ami, who narrated from Hammad bin Salamah, from Thabit, that they asked Anas bin Malik about the ring of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He mentioned it in its essence except that he said and raised his left pinky finger.  

سُئِلَ هَلْ كَانَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ خَاتَمٌ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ أَخَّرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْعِشَاءَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ وَقَدْ كَادَ يَذْهَبُ شَطْرُ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ عِنْدَ شَطْرِ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ صَلُّوا وَنَامُوا وَإِنَّكُمْ لَنْ تَزَالُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ مَا انْتَظَرْتُمُ الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ أَنَسٌ كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى وَبِيضِ خَاتَمِهِ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ وَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَوَصَفَ 1757 أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو صَالِحِ بْنُ أَبِي طَاهِرٍ أنا جَدِّي يَحْيَى بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ الْقَاضِي ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ ثنا زَيْدٌ الْعَمِّيُّ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ أَنَّهُمْ سَأَلُوا أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ عَنْ خَاتَمِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَهُ بِمَعْنَاهُ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ وَرَفَعَ أُصْبُعَهُ الْيُسْرَى الْخِنْصَرَ  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ delayed the last night prayer until the middle of the night, then he went out and prayed. He said, "You will continue to perform the prayer as long as you wait for it, if it were not for the hardship it would cause to the old and weak. I would have delayed this prayer until the middle of the night, like this."  

أَخَّرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ إِلَى قَرِيبٍ مِنْ شَطْرِ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَصَلَّى فَقَالَ إِنَّكُمْ لَنْ تَزَالُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ مَا انْتَظَرْتُمُوهَا وَلَوْلَا كِبَرُ الْكَبِيرِ وَضَعْفُ الضَّعِيفِ أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ وَذُو الْحَاجَةِ لَأَخَّرْتُ هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةَ إِلَى شَطْرِ اللَّيْلِ هَكَذَا  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to his companions while they were waiting for dinner. He said, "Pray and go to sleep while you are waiting for it. Surely, you are in prayer as long as you are waiting for it. If it were not for the weakness of the weak and the elderly, I would have delayed this prayer until halfway through the night." In another narration from Umm Kulthum bint Abi Bakr, from Aisha about this incident, it is mentioned that he delayed the prayer until most of the night had passed and the people in the mosque had fallen asleep. In the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, it says that he delayed the prayer until the night was bright. In the hadith of Ibn Abbas, it says that he delayed the prayer until the people went to sleep and then woke up and prayed again and went back to sleep. In the narration of Al-Hakam bin 'Utaybah, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, it is mentioned that he came out to us when one third of the night had passed or after that. In the hadith of Abu Al-Minal, from Abu Barzah al-Aslami, it is mentioned that he did not mind delaying dinner until one third of the night, then he said until half of the night. Mu'adh said that Shu'bah said, "Then I met him at the beginning of the night and he said, 'Or one third of the night.' Khalid bin Al-Harith said that Shu'bah said, 'Until half of the night.' Hammad bin Salamah said that Abu Al-Minal said, 'Until one third of the night.'"  

خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ وَهُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَ الْعِشَاءَ فَقَالَ صَلُّوا وَرَقَدُوا وَأَنْتُمْ تَنْتَظِرُونَهَا أَمَا إِنَّكُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ مَا انْتَظَرْتُمُوهَا وَلَوْلَا ضَعْفُ الضَّعِيفِ وَكِبَرُ الْكَبِيرِ لَأَخَّرْتُ هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةَ إِلَى شَطْرِ اللَّيْلِ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ فِي هَذِهِ الْقِصَّةِ حَتَّى ذَهَبَ عَامَّةُ اللَّيْلِ وَحَتَّى نَامَ أَهْلُ الْمَسْجِدِ وَفِي حَدِيثِ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ حَتَّى ابْهَارَّ اللَّيْلُ وَفِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ حَتَّى رَقَدَ النَّاسُ وَاسْتَيْقَظُوا وَرَقَدُوا وَاسْتَيْقَظُوا وَفِي رِوَايَةِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عُتَيْبَةَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا حِينَ ذَهَبَ ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ بَعْدَهُ وَفِي حَدِيثِ أَبِي الْمِنْهَالِ عَنْ أَبِي بَرْزَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ وَكَانَ لَا يُبَالِي بِتَأْخِيرِ الْعِشَاءِ إِلَى ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِلَى شَطْرِ اللَّيْلِ وَقَالَ مُعَاذٌ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ ثُمَّ لَقِيتُهُ غُرَّةً فَقَالَ أَوْ ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ وَقَالَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ إِلَى نِصْفِ اللَّيْلِ وَقَالَ حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْمِنْهَالِ إِلَى ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, the prayer has a beginning and an end. The first time for the Dhuhr prayer is when the sun starts to decline, and the last time is when the time for Asr prayer begins. The first time for Asr prayer is when its time starts, and the last time is when the sun turns yellow. The first time for Maghrib prayer is when the sun sets, and the last time is when the horizon disappears. The first time for Isha prayer is when the horizon disappears, and the last time is when the night is halfway through. The first time for Fajr prayer is when the dawn breaks, and the last time is when the sun rises." Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz narrated to us, Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad Ibn Ya'qub said, "I heard Al-Abbas Ibn Muhammad Ad-Duri say, 'I heard Yahya Ibn Ma'een saying that Muhammad Ibn Fudayl weakens the hadith narrated from Al-Amash through Abu Saleh from Abu Hurairah. I believe that Yahya intended to say that the prayer has a beginning and an end.' He also said, 'It is only narrated from Al-Amash through Mujahid.' And he said in another place in Al-Tareekh, 'The hadith of Al-Amash through Abu Saleh from Abu Hurairah said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, the prayer has a beginning and an end.'"  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ لِلصَّلَاةِ أَوَّلًا وَآخِرًا وَإِنَّ أَوَّلَ وَقْتِ صَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ حِينَ تَزُولُ الشَّمْسُ وَإِنَّ آخِرَ وَقْتِهَا حِينَ يَدْخُلُ وَقْتَ الْعَصْرِ وَإِنَّ أَوَّلَ وَقْتِ الْعَصْرِ حِينَ يَدْخُلُ وَقْتُهَا وَإِنَّ آخِرَ وَقْتِهَا حِينَ تَصْفَرُّ الشَّمْسُ وَإِنَّ أَوَّلَ وَقْتِ الْمَغْرِبِ حِينَ تَغْرُبُ الشَّمْسُ وَإِنَّ آخِرَ وَقْتِهَا حِينَ يَغِيبُ الْأُفُقُ وَإِنَّ أَوَّلَ وَقْتِ الْعِشَاءُ حِينَ يَغِيبُ الْأُفُقُ وَإِنَّ آخِرَ وَقْتِهَا حِينَ يَنْتَصِفُ اللَّيْلُ وَإِنَّ أَوَّلَ وَقْتِ الْفَجْرِ حِينَ يَطْلُعُ الْفَجْرُ وَإِنَّ آخِرَ وَقْتِهَا حِينَ تَطْلُعُ الشَّمْسُ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْعَبَّاسَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ الدُّورِيَّ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ مَعِينٍ يُضَعِّفُ حَدِيثَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَحْسَبُ يَحْيَى يُرِيدُ أَنَّ لِلصَّلَاةِ أَوَّلًا وَآخِرًا وَقَالَ إِنَّمَا يُرْوَى عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ وَقَالَ فِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ مِنَ التَّارِيخِ حَدِيثُ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ لِلصَّلَاةِ أَوَّلًا وَآخِرًا

[Machine] About Mujahid who used to say, "See, my talk agrees with what you heard from the Book. Indeed, Umar wrote to Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari that pray Dhuhr when the sun starts to decline, meaning when it moves and pray 'Asr when the sun becomes pure white, and pray Maghrib when the sun sets, and pray 'Isha' until the first half of the night, and pray Fajr when it becomes bright or black, and prolong the recitation."  

عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ كَانَ يَقُولُ انْظُرُوا يُوَافِقُ حَدِيثِي مَا سَمِعْتُمْ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ إِنَّ عُمَرَ ؓ كَتَبَ إِلَى أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ أَنْ صَلُّوا الظُّهْرَ حِينَ تَرْتَفِعُ الشَّمْسُ يَعْنِي تَزُولُ وَصَلُّوا الْعَصْرَ وَالشَّمْسُ بَيْضَاءُ نَقِيَّةٌ وَصَلُّوا الْمَغْرِبَ حِينَ تَغِيبُ الشَّمْسُ وَصَلُّوا الْعِشَاءَ إِلَى نِصْفِ اللَّيْلِ الْأَوَّلِ وَصَلُّوا الصُّبْحَ بِغَلَسٍ أَوْ بِسَوَادٍ وَأَطِيلُوا الْقِرَاءَةَ
