Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is I was about to order for collecting firewood (fuel) and then order Someone to pronounce the Adhan for the prayer and then order someone to lead the prayer then I would go from behind and burn the houses of men who did not present themselves for the (compulsory congregational) prayer. By Him, in Whose Hands my soul is, if anyone of them had known that he would get a bone covered with good meat or two (small) pieces of meat present in between two ribs, he would have turned up for the ʿIsha' prayer.' (Using translation from Bukhārī 644)   

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ آمُرَ بِحَطَبٍ فَيُحْتَطَبَ ثُمَّ آمُرَ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَيُؤَذَّنَ لَهَا ثُمَّ آمُرَ رَجُلًا فَيَؤُمَّ النَّاسَ ثُمَّ أُخَالِفَ إِلَى رِجَالٍ فَأُحَرِّقَ عَلَيْهِمْ بُيُوتَهُمْ فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَوْ يَعْلَمُ أَحَدُهُمْ أَنَّهُ يَجِدُ عَظْمًا سَمِينًا أَوْ مِرْمَاتَيْنِ حَسَنَتَيْنِ لَشَهِدَ الْعِشَاءَ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ الشَّافِعِيِّ  

The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the night prayer and the morning prayer. If they were to know the blessings they have in store, they would have come to them, even though crawling, and I thought that I should order the prayer to be commenced and command a person to lead people in prayer, and I should then go along with some persons having a fagot of fuel with them to the people who have not attended the prayer (in congregation) and would burn their houses with fire. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ أَثْقَلَ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ صَلَاةُ الْعِشَاءِ وَصَلَاةُ الْفَجْرِ وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِيهِمَا لَأَتَوْهُمَا وَلَوْ حَبْوًا وَلَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ آمُرَ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَتُقَامَ ثُمَّ آمُرَ رَجُلًا فَيُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ ثُمَّ أَنْطَلِقَ مَعِي بِرِجَالٍ مَعَهُمْ حُزَمُ الْحَطَبِ ثُمَّ أُخَالِفَ إِلَى قَوْمٍ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ الصَّلَاةَ فَأُحَرِّقَ عَلَيْهِمْ بُيُوتَهُمْ بِالنَّارِ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have intended to command my young men to prepare bundles of firewood for me, then I will order a man to lead the people in prayer, and then I will set fire to the houses of those inside them."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ آمُرَ فِتْيَانِي أَنْ يَسْتَعِدُّوا لِي حُزَمًا مِنْ حَطَبٍ ثُمَّ آمُرَ رَجُلًا يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ ثُمَّ أُحَرِّقَ بُيُوتًا عَلَى مَنْ فِيهَا  

[Machine] About the Prophet ﷺ who said, "I had intended to order the call for prayer (Adhan) to be made and then command a group of young men to carry bundles of firewood and burn the houses of those who did not attend the prayer even though they could hear the Adhan, but I considered that this might cause hardship for people who were old or sick."  

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ آمُرَ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَتُقَامَ ثُمَّ آمُرَ بِفِتْيَانٍ مَعَهُمْ حُزَمُ الْحَطَبِ وَأُحَرِّقَ عَلَى قَوْمٍ دُورَهُمْ يَسْمَعُونَ النِّدَاءَ ثُمَّ لَا يَأْتُونَ الصَّلَاةَ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I had intended to order my young men to gather bundles of firewood, then I would go and burn the houses of those who do not attend the Friday prayer." This is what he said about Friday (prayer), and it is also narrated from Abu Al-Ahwas from Abdullah bin Mas'ud. And what is indicated by all the reports is that he expressed through Friday (prayer) the concept of congregation. And Allah knows best.  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ آمُرَ فِتْيَانِي أَنْ يَجْمَعُوا حُزَمًا مِنَ الْحَطَبِ ثُمَّ أَنْطَلِقَ فَأُحَرِّقَ عَلَى قَوْمٍ بُيُوتَهُمْ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ الْجُمُعَةَ كَذَا قَالَ الْجُمُعَةَ وَكَذَلِكَ رُوِيَ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ وَالَّذِي يَدُلُّ عَلَيْهِ سَائِرُ الرِّوَايَاتِ أَنَّهُ عَبَّرَ بِالْجُمُعَةِ عَنِ الْجَمَاعَةِ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ  

I intend that I should command a person to lead people in prayer, and then burn those persons who absent themselves from Jumu'a prayer in their houses. (Using translation from Muslim 652)   

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَخَلَّفُونَ عَنِ الْجُمُعَةِ لَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ آمُرَ رَجُلًا يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ أَوْ لِلنَّاسِ ثُمَّ يُحَرِّقَ عَلَى رِجَالٍ تَخَلَّفُوا عَنِ الْجُمُعَةِ  

I thought about giving orders to some youths for gathering a bundle of firewood, then going off to some people who their prayers in their homes without any excuse, and burning down their houses over them. I (Yazid b. Yazid) said: I asked Yazid b. al-Asamm: Abu ‘Awf did he mean Friday (prayer) or any other? He replied: may my ears become deaf if I have not heard Abu Hurairah narrating it from the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him); He did not mention Friday (prayer) or any other. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 549)   

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ آمُرَ فِتْيَتِي فَيَجْمَعُوا حُزَمًا مِنْ حَطَبٍ ثُمَّ آتِي قَوْمًا يُصَلُّونَ فِي بُيُوتِهِمْ لَيْسَتْ بِهِمْ عِلَّةٌ فَأُحَرِّقَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ قُلْتُ لِيَزِيدَ بْنِ الْأَصَمِّ يَا أَبَا عَوْفٍ الْجُمُعَةُ عَنَى أَوْ غَيْرَهَا؟ فَقَالَ صُمَّتَا أُذُنَايَ إِنْ لَمْ أَكُنْ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَأْثُرُهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا ذَكَرَ جُمُعَةً وَلَا غَيْرَهَا  

we were sitting with Abu Hurairah in the mosque. A man went out of the mosque after the ADHAN for the afternoon prayer had been called. Abu Hurairah said: As regards this (man), he disobeyed Abu al-Qasim, the prophet ﷺ. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 536)   

كُنَّا مَعَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ بِالْمَسْجِدِ فَنَادَى الْمُنَادِي بِالْعَصْرِ فَخَرَجَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ أَمَّا هَذَا فَقَدْ عَصَى أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ  

[Machine] Abu Huraira was sitting in the mosque and he saw a man crossing the mosque after the call to prayer. He said, "As for this person, he has disobeyed Abu Al-Qasim (Muhammad, ﷺ )."  

كَانَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ جَالِسًا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَرَأَى رَجُلًا يَجْتَازُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ بَعْدَ الْأَذَانِ فَقَالَ أَمَّا هَذَا فَقَدْ عَصَى أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "No one should leave the mosque after the call to prayer except a hypocrite, except for a man who leaves for his need and intends to return to the mosque."  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لَا يَخْرُجُ أَحَدٌ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ بَعْدَ النِّدَاءِ إِلَّا مُنَافِقٌ إِلَّا رَجُلٌ يَخْرُجُ لِحَاجَتِهِ وَهُوَ يُرِيدُ الرَّجْعَةَ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ  

[Machine] Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever hears the call to prayer and does not respond, then he will have no prayer except with an excuse. And likewise."  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ سَمِعَ النِّدَاءَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْ فَلَا صَلَاةَ لَهُ إِلَّا لِعُذْرٍ وَكَذَلِكَ  

[Machine] The call was made, but there was no response, either there was no goodness intended or it was not desired with it.  

النِّدَاءَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْ فَلَمْ يُرِدْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لَمْ يُرَدْ بِهِ  

[Machine] Ali said, "There is no prayer for the neighbor of the mosque except in the mosque."  

قَالَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ لَا صَلَاةَ لِجَارِ الْمَسْجِدِ إِلَّا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ  

[Machine] There is no prayer for the neighbor of the mosque except in the mosque. So he was asked, who is the neighbor of the mosque? He said, the one who hears the caller.  

لَا صَلَاةَ لِجَارِ الْمَسْجِدِ إِلَّا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ وَمَنْ جَارُ الْمَسْجِدِ؟ قَالَ مَنْ أَسْمَعَهُ الْمُنَادِي  

[Machine] He heard the call from the neighbors of the mosque while he was healthy without any excuse, but he did not respond, so there is no prayer for him. It was narrated from another source that it was raised and he was weak.  

سَمِعَ النِّدَاءَ مِنْ جِيرَانِ الْمَسْجِدِ وَهُوَ صَحِيحٌ مِنْ غَيْرِ عُذْرٍ فَلَمْ يُجِبْ فَلَا صَلَاةَ لَهُ وَقَدْ رُوِيَ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ مَرْفُوعًا وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ  

[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'There is no prayer for the neighbor of the mosque except in the mosque.'"  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَا صَلَاةَ لِجَارِ الْمَسْجِدِ إِلَّا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ  

"A blind man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺand said: 'I do not have a guide to bring me to the prayer.' And he asked him to grant him a dispensation allowing him to pray in his house, and he gave him permission. Then when he turned away he said to him: 'Can you hear the call to prayer?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then respond to it."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 850)   

جَاءَ أَعْمَى إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لِي قَائِدٌ يَقُودُنِي إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَسَأَلَهُ أَنْ يُرَخِّصَ لَهُ فِي بَيْتِهِ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ فَلَمَّا وَلَّى دَعَاهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ هَلْ تَسْمَعُ النِّدَاءَ بِالصَّلَاةِ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَأَجِبْ  

[Machine] A blind man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Indeed, I can hear the call to prayer but I might not find someone to guide me, so shall I have a Masjid (mosque) in my house?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you hear the call to prayer?" He replied, "Yes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you hear the call to prayer, then respond to it." This narration was reported by Abu Abdur-Rahim, narrated by Zaid ibn Abi Unaisah, from Adi ibn Thabit, from Abdullah ibn Maqil.  

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْمَى أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أَسْمَعُ النِّدَاءَ وَلَعَلِّي لَا أَجِدُ قَائِدًا أَفَأَتَّخِذُ مَسْجِدًا فِي دَارِي؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ تَسْمَعُ النِّدَاءَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ إِذَا سَمِعْتَ النِّدَاءَ فَاخْرُجْ خَالَفَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ فَرَوَاهُ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَعْقِلٍ  

[Machine] I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am an old blind man with a wide house, and I have no one to lead me. Can I pray in my house?" He asked, "Do you hear the call to prayer?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Then I do not find any permission for you." And Abu Al-Husayn ibn Al-Fadl Al-Qattan informed us that Abdullah ibn Ja'far narrated to him that Ya'qub ibn Sufyan narrated to him that Sulaiman ibn Harb narrated to him that Hammad ibn Zaid narrated to him from Aasim from Abu Razin that Ibn Umm Maktum asked the Prophet ﷺ about a hadith, and Abu Sinan narrated it from Amr ibn Murrah, from Abu Razin, from Abu Hurairah.  

جِئْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي كَبِيرٌ ضَرِيرٌ شَاسِعُ الدَّارِ وَلِي قَائِدٌ لَا يُلَاوِمُنِي فَهَلْ تَجِدُ لِي رُخْصَةً أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ فِي بَيْتِي؟ قَالَ أَتَسْمَعُ النِّدَاءَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ لَكَ رُخْصَةً 4949 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي رَزِينٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ الْحَدِيثَ وَرَوَاهُ أَبُو سِنَانٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي رَزِينٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ  

[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, indeed the city is full of wild animals and dangerous creatures." The Prophet ﷺ responded, "You will hear the call to prayer (Adhan) for the prayer, you must respond to it. You will hear the call to plough the land (Falah), you must respond to it as well." Then Abu Abdullah said, "Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq Al-Faqih, said regarding this matter that this blind man is not obligated to attend the congregational prayer. This is indicated by the fact that he granted a concession to 'Utban ibn Malik, who was blind, regarding attending the congregation." He implied that when the Prophet ﷺ said to the blind man, "I do not find permission for you," it means he did not find permission for him to gain the virtue of attending the congregation. The scholar commented, "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, this interpretation is confirmed."  

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ الْمَدِينَةَ كَثِيرَةُ السِّبَاعِ وَالْهَوَامِّ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ تَسْمَعُ حِيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حِيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ فَحَيْ هَلَّا قَالَ لَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْفَقِيهُ لَيْسَ فِي أَمَرِهِ هَذَا الْأَعْمَى بِحُضُورِ الْجَمَاعَةِ مَا يَدُلُّ أَنَّ حُضَورَهَا فَرْضٌ لِأَنَّهُ قَدْ رَخَّصَ لِعِتْبَانَ بْنِ مَالِكٍ وَهُوَ أَعْمَى التَّخَلُّفَ عَنْ حُضُورِهَا فَدَلَّ عَلَى أَنَّ قَوْلَهُ لَا أَجِدُ لَكَ رُخْصَةً أَيْ لَا أَجِدُ لَكَ رُخْصَةً تَلْحَقُ فَضِيلَةَ مَنْ حَضَرَهَا قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَالَّذِي يُؤَكِّدُ هَذَا التَّأْوِيلَ  

[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have a leader who does not censor me in these two prayers." He said, "Which two prayers?" I said, "The evening prayer and the dawn prayer." The Prophet ﷺ said, "If the person who leads them knew what was in them, he would come even if he had to crawl." The scholar said, "And they differed in the name of the son of Umm Maktoom, and it is said Abdullah and it is said Amr."  

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ لِي قَائِدًا لَا يُلَاوِمُنِي فِي هَاتَيْنِ الصَّلَاتَيْنِ قَالَ أِيُّ الصَّلَاتَيْنِ؟ قُلْتُ الْعِشَاءُ وَالصُّبْحُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَوْ يَعْلَمُ الْقَاعِدُ عَنْهُمَا مَا فِيهِمَا لَأَتَاهُمَا وَلَوْ حَبْوًا قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَاخْتَلَفُوا فِي اسْمِ ابْنِ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَقِيلَ عَبْدَ اللهِ وَقِيلَ عَمْرٌو  

"Whoever would like to meet Allah tomorrow (i.e. on the Day of Judgment) as a Muslim, let him preserve these five (daily) prayer when the call for them is given, for they are part of the ways of guidance, and Allah prescribed the ways of guidance to your Prophet. By Allah, if each of you prays in his house, you will have abandoned the Sunnah of your Prophet, and if you abandon the Sunnah of your Prophet you will go astray. I remember when no one stayed behind from the prayer except a hypocrite who was known for his hypocrisy. I have a man coming supported by two others, until he joined the row (of worshippers). There is no man who purifies himself and does it well, and comes to the mosque and prays there, but for every step that he takes, Allah raises him in status one degree thereby, and takes away one of his sins." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 777)   

مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَلْقَى اللهَ غَدًا مُسْلِمًا فَلْيُحَافِظْ عَلَى هَؤُلَاءِ الصَّلَوَاتِ حَيْثُ يُنَادَى بِهِنَّ فَإِنَّ اللهَ شَرَعَ لِنَبِيِّكُمْ ﷺ سُنَنَ الْهُدَى وَإِنَّهُنَّ مِنْ سُنَنِ الْهُدَى وَلَوْ أَنَّكُمْ صَلَّيْتُمْ فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ كَمَا يُصَلِّي هَذَا الْمُتَخَلِّفُ فِي بَيْتِهِ لَتَرَكْتُمْ سُنَّةَ نَبِيِّكُمْ وَلَوْ تَرَكْتُمْ سَنَةَ نَبِيِّكُمْ لَضَلَلْتُمْ وَمَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ يَتَطَهَّرُ فَيُحْسِنُ الطُّهُورَ ثُمَّ يَعْمَدُ إِلَى مَسْجِدٍ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْمَسَاجِدِ إِلَّا كَتَبَ اللهُ لَهُ بِكُلِّ خُطْوَةٍ يَخْطُوهَا حَسَنَةً وَرَفَعَهُ بِهَا دَرَجَةً وَحَطَّ عَنْهُ بِهَا سَيِّئَةً وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنَا وَمَا يَتَخَلَّفُ عَنْهَا إِلَّا مُنَافِقٌ مَعْلُومٌ نِفَاقُهُ وَلَقَدْ كَانَ الرَّجُلُ يُؤْتَى بِهِ يُهَادَى بَيْنَ الرَّجُلَيْنِ حَتَّى يُقَامَ فِي الصَّفِّ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The witnesses of 'Isha (evening) and Fajr (morning) prayers are a proof between us and the hypocrites. They cannot perform them or something similar." Al-Shafi'i said: "What the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said can be likened to someone burning down the houses of a group of people. What he said was about a group of people who neglected the 'Isha prayer out of hypocrisy, and Allah knows best."  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ شُهُودُ الْعِشَاءِ وَالصُّبْحِ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَهُمَا أَوْ نَحْوَ هَذَا قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ فَيُشْبِهُ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ هَمِّهِ بِأَنْ يُحَرِّقَ عَلَى قَوْمٍ بُيُوتَهُمْ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَا قَالَهُ فِي قَوْمٍ تَخَلَّفُوا فِي صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ لِنِفَاقٍ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ  

[Machine] When we lost the man in the prayer of Isha and Fajr, we would assume bad things about him.  

كُنَّا إِذَا فَقَدْنَا الرَّجُلَ فِي صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ وَالْفَجْرِ أَسَأْنَا بِهِ الظَّنَّ
