I asked Ubai bin Kaʿb regarding the two Muwwidhat (Surats of taking refuge with Allah). He said, "I asked the Prophet ﷺ about them, He said, 'These two Surats have been recited to me and I have recited them (and are present in the Qur'an).' So, we say as Messenger of Allah ﷺ said (i.e., they are part of the Qur'an." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4976)   

سَأَلْتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ قِيلَ لِي فَقُلْتُ فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ  

[Machine] I asked Ubayy ibn Ka'b about the mu'awwidhatayn (surahs of seeking protection), so I said, "O Abu al-Mundhir, surely your brother Ibn Mas'ud recites them from the Mus'haf." He replied, "Indeed, I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this, and he said, 'Say them just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said.'"  

سَأَلْتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ إِنَّ أَخَاكَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَحُكُّهُمَا مِنَ الْمُصْحَفِ قَالَ إِنِّي سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَقِيلَ لِي فَقُلْتُ فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, verses have been revealed to me that no one else has seen, referring to the last two chapters of surah al-Falaq and surah al-Nas. And in the narration of Muhammad ibn Ubayd, he said, "Verses were revealed to me tonight that I have never seen before, the last two chapters of surah al-Falaq and surah al-Nas."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَقَدْ أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيَّ آيَاتٌ لَمْ يُرَ مِثْلُهُنَّ يَعْنِي الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ يَعْلَى وَفِي رِوَايَةِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيَّ اللَّيْلَةَ آيَاتٌ لَمْ أَرَ مِثْلَهُنَّ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ  

[Machine] I was driving the camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he said to me, "O 'Uqbah, shall I not teach you the two best surahs that have been recited?" I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, teach me." He said, "Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak' and 'I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind'." He did not see me showing much excitement about them. The next morning, he led the people in prayer and recited them, then he asked me, "O 'Uqbah, how did you find them?" Al-'Ala' bin Kathir narrated this, and Ibn Wahb narrated from Mu'awiyah from Al-'Ala' bin Al-Harith, and it is the most correct. 4048 - Abu 'Ali Ar-Rudhbari reported to me, Abu Bakr bin Dasa narrated to me, Abu Dawud narrated to me, from Ahmad bin 'Amr bin As-Sarh, from Ibn Wahb, from Mu'awiyah, from Al-'Ala' bin Al-Harith, from Al-Qasim, the freed slave of Mu'awiyah, from 'Uqbah bin 'Amir, who said, "I was driving the camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during a journey, when he said to me, 'O 'Uqbah, shall I not teach you the two best surahs that have been recited?' He then taught me to say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak' and 'I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind'." He did not see me showing much excitement about them. Then, when he descended for the morning prayer, he led the people in prayer and recited them. After he finished the prayer, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned towards me and said, 'O 'Uqbah, how did you find them?' Ath-Thawri narrated it from Mu'awiyah bin Salih.  

كُنْتُ أَقُودُ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ نَاقَتَهُ فَقَالَ لِي يَا عُقْبَةُ أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ خَيْرَ سُورَتَيْنِ قُرِئَتَا؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَأَقْرَأَنِي قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ فَلَمْ يَرَنِي أَعْجَبُ بِهِمَا فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ الْغَدَاةَ فَقَرَأَ بِهِمَا فَقَالَ لِي يَا عُقْبَةُ كَيْفَ رَأَيْتَ؟ كَذَا قَالَ الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ وَقَالَ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ وَهُوَ أَصَحُّ 4048 أنبأ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ دَاسَةَ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ السَّرْحِ أنبأ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ مَوْلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَقُودُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ نَاقَتَهُ فِي السَّفَرِ فَقَالَ لِي يَا عُقْبَةُ أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ خَيْرَ سُورَتَيْنِ قُرِئَتَا فَعَلَّمَنِي قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسَ فَلَمْ يَرَنِي سُرِرْتُ بِهِمَا جِدًّا فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ لِصَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ صَلَّى بِهِمَا صَلَاةَ الصُّبْحِ لِلنَّاسِ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ الْتَفَتَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ لِي يَا عُقْبَةُ كَيْفَ رَأَيْتَ؟ وَرَوَاهُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ  

He asked the Prophet ﷺ about Al-Mua'awwidhatain. Uqbah said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in praying Fajr and recited them." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 952)   

أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ فَأَمَّنَا بِهِمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ  

White I was travelling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ between al-Juhfah and al-Abwa', a wind and intense darkness enveloped us, whereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to seek refuge in Allah, reciting: "I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn," and "I seek refuge in the Lord of men." He then said: Uqbah, use them when seeking refuge in Allah, for no one can use anything to compare with them for the purpose. Uqbah added: I heard him reciting them when he led the people in prayer. بَيْنَمَا أَنَا أَسِيرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ الْجُحْفَةِ وَالْأَبْوَاءِ إِذَا غَشِيَتْنَا رِيحٌ وَظُلْمَةٌ شَدِيدَةٌ فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ بِ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ وَأَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ وَيَقُولُ يَا عُقْبَةُ تَعَوَّذْ بِهِمَا فَمَا تَعَوَّذَ مُتَعَوِّذٌ بِمِثْلِهِمَا قَالَ وَسَمِعْتُهُ يَؤُمُّنَا بِهِمَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ
