“Why donʿt you get up and pray?ʿ I [‘Ali] said: O Messenger of Allah, indeed our souls are in the hand of Allah; if He wants to wake us up He will wake us up. He left when I said that and did not say anything back to me. Then I heard him say, whilst he was turning away and striking his thigh: “But, man is ever more quarrelsome than anythingʿ [Al-Kahf 18:54]. ʿAli bin Husain ؓ narrated that his father, Husain bin ʿAli ؓ told him that ʿAli bin Abi Talib ؓ told him that The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him and Fatimah at night... and he mentioned a similar report. أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ طَرَقَهُ وَفَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَيْلًا فَقَالَ أَلَا تُصَلِّيَانِ؟ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّمَا أَنْفُسُنَا بِيَدِ اللهِ فَإِذَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَبْعَثَنَا بَعَثَنَا فَانْصَرَفَ حِينَ قُلْتُ ذَلِكَ وَلَمْ يَرْجِعْ إِلَيَّ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ سَمِعْتُهُ وَهُوَ مُوَلٍّ يَضْرِبُ فَخِذَهُ وَيَقُولُ {وَكَانَ الْإِنْسَانُ أَكْثَرَ شَيْءٍ جَدَلًا} [الكهف 54]  

[Machine] The man was during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, whenever he had a dream, he would narrate it to the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "I wished to see a dream and narrate it to the Prophet ﷺ. I was a young bachelor boy, and I used to sleep in the mosque. I saw that two angels came to me. One of them said to the other, 'Take him to the Fire.' I started saying, 'I seek refuge with Allah from the Fire.' Then I met another angel who asked me, 'Why didn't you ask for protection?' They took me until we reached the Fire, where I saw it folded and had two horns like the horns of a cow. Inside it, I saw people whom I recognized.' When I woke up in the morning, I went to Hafsa and told her about it. Hafsa then narrated it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'What a blessed man Abdullah is! If he prays during the night.' Salim said, 'He used to pray during the night, but only a little.'"  

كَانَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِذَا رَأَى رُؤْيَا قَصَّهَا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ فَتَمَنَّيْتُ أَنْ أَرَى رُؤْيَا فَأَقُصَّهَا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَكُنْتُ غُلَامًا شَابًّا أَعْزُبَ فَكُنْتُ أَنَامُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ فَرَأَيْتُ كَأَنَ مَلَكَيْنِ أَتَيَانِي قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا لِلْآخَرِ انْطَلِقْ بِهِ إِلَى النَّارِ قَالَ فَجَعَلْتُ أَقُولُ أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ النَّارِ قَالَ فَلَقِيَنَا مَلَكٌ آخَرُ فَقَالَ لِي لَمْ تُرَعْ قَالَ فَانْطَلَقُوا بِي حَتَّى وَقَفْنَا عَلَى النَّارِ فَإِذَا هِيَ مَطْوِيَّةٌ وَإِذَا لَهَا قَرْنَانِ كَقَرْنَيِ الْبِيرِ قَالَ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا رِجَالًا أَعْرِفُهُمْ قَالَ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ غَدَوْتُ عَلَى حَفْصَةَ فَقَصَصْتُهَا عَلَيْهَا فَقَصَّتْهَا حَفْصَةُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نِعْمَ الرَّجُلُ عَبْدُ اللهِ لَوْ كَانَ يَقُومُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ سَالِمٌ فَكَانَ لَا يَنَامُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا  

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: When one you sleeps, the devil ties three knots at the back of his neck, sealing every knot with, "You have a long night, so sleep." So if one awakes and mentions Allah, a knot will be loosened; if he performs ablution another knot will be loosened; and if he prays, the third knot will be loosened; and in the morning he will be active and in good spirits; otherwise he will be in bad spirits and sluggish. أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ يَعْقِدُ الشَّيْطَانُ عَلَى قَافِيَةِ رَأْسِ أَحَدِكُمْ إِذَا نَامَ ثَلَاثَ عُقَدٍ كُلُّ عُقْدَةٍ يَضْرِبُ مَكَانَهَا عَلَيْكَ لَيْلٌ طَوِيلٌ فَارْقُدْ فَإِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ فَإِنْ ذَكَرَ رَبَّهُ انْحَلَّتْ عُقْدَةٌ فَإِنْ تَوَضَّأَ انْحَلَّتْ عُقْدَةٌ فَإِنْ صَلَّى انْحَلَّتْ عُقْدَةٌ فَأَصْبَحَ نَشِيطًا طَيِّبَ النَّفْسِ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ أَصْبَحَ خَبِيثَ النَّفْسِ كَسْلَانَ  

The Prophet ﷺ said: May Allah have mercy on a man who gets up at night and prays, and awakens his wife; if she refuses, he should sprinkle water on her face. May Allah have mercy on a woman who gets up at night and prays, and awakens her husband; if he refuses, she would sprinkle water on his face. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1308)   

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ رَحِمَ اللهُ رَجُلًا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَصَلَّى وَأَيْقَظَ امْرَأَتَهُ فَإِنْ أَبَتْ نَضَحَ فِي وَجْهِهَا الْمَاءَ رَحِمَ اللهُ امْرَأَةً قَامَتْ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَصَلَّتْ وَأَيْقَظَتْ زَوْجَهَا فَإِنْ أَبَى نَضَحَتْ فِي وَجْهِهِ الْمَاءَ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever wakes up at night and wakes up his wife, and they pray two rak'ahs together, they will be recorded as those who remember Allah much, men and women." Abu Ali Ruwzbari narrated from Abu Bakr ibn Dasa narrated from Abu Dawood narrated from Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated from Sufyan narrated from Ali ibn Al-Aqmar that he mentioned it but did not attribute it to anyone. Abu Dawood included it in the speech of Abu Sa'id. Abu Dawood said Ibn Mahdi narrated it from Sufyan that he mentioned it ascribed to Abu Hurairah. Abu Dawood said the hadith of Sufyan is discontinued. The Sheikh said it was narrated by Isa ibn Jafar Ar-Razi from Sufyan as a marfu' hadith, similar to the hadith of Al-A'mash.  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنِ اسْتَيْقَظَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَأَيْقَظَ امْرَأَتَهُ فَصَلَّيَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ جَمِيعًا كُتِبَا لَيْلَتَئِذٍ مِنَ الذَّاكِرِينَ اللهَ كَثِيرًا وَالذَّاكِرَاتِ 4646 وَأنبأ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ دَاسَةَ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ أنبأ سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْأَقْمَرِ فَذَكَرَهُ وَلَمْ يَرْفَعْهُ وَلَا ذَكَرَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ جَعَلَهُ فِي كَلَامِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَرَوَاهُ ابْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ قَالَ فَأَرَاهُ ذَكَرَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ حَدِيثُ سُفْيَانَ مَوْقُوفٌ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَرَوَاهُ عِيسَى بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الرَّازِيُّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ مَرْفُوعًا نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ الْأَعْمَشِ  

“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Al-Madinah, the people rushed towards him and it was said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has come!’ I came along with the people to see him, and when I looked at the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I realized that his face was not the face of a liar. The first thing he said was: “O people, spread (the greeting of) Salam, offer food to people and pray at night when people are sleeping, you will enter Paradise in peace.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1334)   

أَنْ قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَانْجَفَلَ النَّاسُ قَبْلَهُ فَقَالُوا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَجِئْتُ فِي النَّاسِ؛ لَأَنْظُرَ إِلَى وَجْهِهِ فَلَمَّا أَنْ رَأَيْتُ وَجْهَهُ عَرَفْتُ أَنَّ وَجْهَهُ لَيْسَ بِوَجْهِ كَذَّابٍ فَكَانَ أَوَّلَ شَيْءٍ سَمِعْتُ مِنْهُ أَنْ قَالَ يَأَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَطْعِمُوا الطَّعَامَ وَأَفْشُوا السَّلَامَ وَصِلُوا الْأَرْحَامَ وَصَلُّوا بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّاسُ نِيَامٌ تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِسَلَامٍ  

[Machine] "On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said: 'Upon you is to establish the night prayer, for it is the habit of the righteous before you, and it is a means of drawing near to your Lord, and it expiates sins and prevents wrongdoing, as mentioned in this narration.'"  

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ عَلَيْكُمْ بِقِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ فَإِنَّهُ دَأَبُ الصَّالِحِينَ قَبْلَكُمْ وَهُوَ قُرْبَةٌ لَكُمْ إِلَى رَبِّكُمْ وَمَكْفَرَةٌ لِلسَّيِّئَاتِ وَمَنْهَاةٌ عَنِ الْإِثْمِ كَذَا فِي هَذِهِ الرِّوَايَةِ  

“Ishaq bin Mansur narrated to us, from Isra’il” with this (Another chain) Bilal narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Hold fast to Qiyam al-Lail, for it is the practice of the righteous before you, and indeed Qiyam al-Lail is a means of nearness to Allah, a means of prevention from sin, an expiation for bad deeds, and a barrier for the body against disease.” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3549)   

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ عَلَيْكُمْ بِقِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ فَإِنَّهُ دَأَبُ الصَّالِحِينَ قَبْلَكُمْ وَقُرْبَةٌ إِلَى اللهِ وَتَكْفِيرٌ لِلسَّيِّئَاتِ وَمَنْهَاةٌ عَنِ الْإِثْمِ وَمَطْرَدَةٌ لِلدَّاءِ عَنِ الْجَسَدِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ الْقَطَّانِ وَإِنَّ قِيَامَ اللَّيْلِ قُرْبَةٌ إِلَى اللهِ تَعَالَى

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَيْكُمْ بِقِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ دَأَبُ الصَّالِحِينَ قَبْلَكُمْ وَإِنَّ قِيَامَ اللَّيْلِ قُرْبَةٌ إِلَى اللهِ تَعَالَى وَتَكْفِيرٌ لِلسَّيِّئَاتِ وَمَنْهَاةٌ عَنِ الْإِثْمِ وَمَطْرَدَةٌ لِلدَّاءِ عَنِ الْجَسَدِ  

[Machine] Abdullah said, "The superiority of the night prayer over the daytime prayer is like the superiority of secret charity over open charity."  

قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَضْلُ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ عَلَى صَلَاةِ النِّهَارِ كَفَضْلِ صَدَقَةِ السِّرِّ عَلَى صَدَقَةِ الْعَلَانِيَةِ
