[Machine] Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not inform you that you should fast during the day and stand (in prayer) during the night? I said, "Yes." He said, "Do not do so, for if you do, your eyes will become weak and your soul will become disgruntled. Indeed, your eyes have a right over you, your soul has a right over you, and your family has a right over you. So, fast and break your fast, stand (in prayer) and sleep."  

لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَلَمْ أُخْبَرْ أَنَّكَ تَصُومُ النَّهَارَ وَتَقُومُ اللَّيْلَ؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلْ فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ هَجَمَتْ عَيْنَاكَ وَنَفِهَتْ نَفْسُكَ إِنَّ لِعَيْنِكَ حَقًّا وَلِنَفْسِكَ حَقًّا وَلِأَهْلِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا صُمْ وَأَفْطِرْ وَقُمْ وَنَمْ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to not want to be seen praying at night except that you would see him, nor sleeping except that you would see him.  

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَشَاءُ أَنْ تَرَاهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مُصَلِّيًا إِلَّا رَأَيْتَهُ وَلَا نَائِمًا إِلَّا رَأَيْتَهُ  

Anas bin Malik was asked about the Prophet's fasting and he said: "He would fast during a month until we thought that he did not want to abstain from fasting during any of it. And, he would not fast during a month until we thought that he did not want to fast during any of it. (There was no time) that I wanted to see if he was performing Salat during the night, except that I would see him praying, nor to see him sleeping, except that I would see him sleeping." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 769)   

عَنْ صَلَاةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَصَوْمِهِ تَطَوُّعًا قَالَ كَانَ يَصُومُ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ حَتَّى نَقُولَ مَا يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا وَيُفْطِرُ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ حَتَّى نَقُولَ مَا يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَصُومَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا وَمَا كُنَّا نَشَاءُ أَنْ نَرَاهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مُصَلِّيًا إِلَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ وَلَا نَرَاهُ نَائِمًا إِلَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ  

[Machine] About the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , it was narrated that he used to love constant actions. I said, "Which part of the night did he stand (in prayer)?" They said, "When he heard the loud screaming." This is from the narration of Abu Al-Ahwas and others from Ash'ath in Sahih.  

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُحِبُّ الدَّائِمَ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ قُلْتُ أِيُّ اللَّيْلِ كَانَ يَقُومُ؟ قَالَتْ إِذَا سَمِعَ الصَّارِخَ أَخْرَجَاهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ وَغَيْرِهِ عَنْ أَشْعَثَ فِي الصَّحِيحِ  

It Is Haula' bint Tuwait and they say that she does not sleep at night. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: (Oh) she does not sleep at night! Choose an act which you are capable of doing (continuously). By Allah, Allah would not grow weary, but you will grow weary. (Using translation from Muslim 785a)   

الْحَوْلَاءَ بِنْتَ تُوَيْتِ بْنِ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَسَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعُزَّى مَرَّتْ بِهَا وَعِنْدَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ هَذِهِ الْحَوْلَاءُ بِنْتُ تُوَيْتٍ وَزَعَمُوا أَنَّهَا لَا تَنَامُ اللَّيْلَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَلِمَ لَا تَنَامُ اللَّيْلَ؟ خُذُوا مِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تُطِيقُونَ فَوَاللهِ لَا يَسْأَمُ اللهُ حَتَّى تَسْأَمُوا  

[Machine] "Aisha had a woman from the Banu Asad with her. The Prophet ﷺ entered and asked, 'Who is this?' Aisha replied, 'This is so-and-so, a woman who does not sleep at night.' The Prophet ﷺ mentioned her prayers and said, 'May Allah have mercy on you and grant you ease. Allah does not tire until you tire.' Then she said, 'He (the Prophet) preferred the religion that is continually practiced by its companion.'"  

أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ كَانَتْ عِنْدَهَا امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ فَدَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَنْ هَذِهِ؟ قَالَتْ هَذِهِ فُلَانَةُ لَا تَنَامُ اللَّيْلَ قَالَ فَذَكَرَتْ مِنْ صَلَاتِهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَهْ عَلَيْكُمْ بِمَا تُطِيقُونَ فَوَاللهِ لَا يَمَلُّ اللهُ حَتَّى تَمَلُّوا قَالَ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ أَحَبُّ الدِّينِ إِلَيْهِ الَّذِي يَدُومُ عَلَيْهِ صَاحِبُهُ  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ entered upon her and she said, "This is so-and-so, she remembers from her prayers." He said, "What? Indeed, Allah does not become weary until you become weary, and He loves the religion that is consistent upon it." And Shaykh Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili said, "His saying, may ﷺ : 'Indeed, Allah does not become weary until you become weary,' some of them said, 'He does not become weary of rewarding until you become weary of actions.' And Allah, exalted be He, is not described with weariness, but rather the speech is brought out to match the wording. And that is common in the speech of the Arabs. And based on that, the saying of Allah, "And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it" [Surah Ash-Shura 40] applies to the first evil act which is a sin in regards to the wording of the evil act, and retribution is fair, not an evil act. And likewise His saying, exalted be He, "So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you." [Surah Al-Baqarah 194] And the retribution is not oppression nor aggression. So it is brought out in wording to match the assault, but the meaning is not aggression. Similarly, His saying, "Indeed, Allah does not become weary until you become weary," is brought out to match the wording until you become weary, and the meaning is that the reward for their actions will not be cut off as long as they do not become weary and abandon them. And Allah knows best.  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَتْ هَذِهِ فُلَانَةُ تَذْكُرُ مِنْ صَلَاتِهَا فَقَالَ مَهْ فَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يَمَلُّ حَتَّى تَمَلُّوا وَأَحَبُّ الدِّينِ مَا دُوِِمَ عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ الشَّيْخُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ قَوْلُهُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يَمَلُّ حَتَّى تَمَلُّوا قَالَ فِيهِ بَعْضُهُمْ لَا يَمَلُّ مِنَ الثَّوَابِ حَتَّى تَمَلُّوا مِنَ الْعَمَلِ وَاللهُ ﷻ لَا يُوصَفُ بِالْمَلَالِ وَلَكِنَّ الْكَلَامَ أُخْرِجَ مَخْرَجَ الْمُحَاذَاةِ لِلَّفْظِ بِاللَّفْظِ وَذَلِكَ شَائِعٌ فِي كَلَامِ الْعَرَبِ وَعَلَى ذَلِكَ خَرَجَ قَوْلُ اللهِ ﷻ {وَجَزَاءُ سَيِّئَةٍ سَيِّئَةٌ مِثْلُهَا} [الشورى 40] قُوْبِلَتِ السَّيِّئَةُ الْأُولَى الَّتِي هِيَ ذَنْبٌ بِالْجَزَاءِ عَلَى لَفْظِ السَّيِّئَةِ وَالْقِصَاصُ عَدْلٌ لَيْسَ بِسَيِّئَةٍ وَكَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى {فَاعْتَدُوا عَلَيْهِ بِمِثْلِ مَا اعْتَدَى عَلَيْكُمْ} [البقرة 194] وَاقْتِصَاصُهُ لَيْسَ بِظُلْمٍ وَلَا عُدْوَانٍ فَأُخْرِجَ فِي اللَّفْظِ لِلمُحَاذَاةِ عَلَى الِاعْتِدَاءِ وَالْمَعْنَى لَيْسَ بِاعْتِدَاءٍ فَكَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ فَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يَمَلُّ حَتَّى تَمَلُّوا أُخْرِجَ مُحَاذِيًا لِلَّفْظِ حَتَّى تَمَلُّوا وَالْمَعْنَى لَا يَقْطَعُ عَنْهُمْ ثَوَابَ أَعْمَالِهِمْ مَا لَمْ يَمَلُّوا فَيَتْرُكُوهَا وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ entered the mosque and saw a rope stretched between two pillars. He asked, "What is this?" They said, "This is the rope of Zainab, who prays and when she becomes tired, she holds onto it." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Untie it so that one of you can pray with his own energy. And when he becomes tired, he can sit down."  

دَخَلَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَسْجِدَ فَإِذَا حَبْلٌ مَمْدُودٌ بَيْنَ سَارِيَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا؟ فَقَالُوا هَذَا الْحَبْلُ لِزَيْنَبَ تُصَلِّي فَإِذَا فَتَرَتْ تَعَلَّقَتْ بِهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حُلُّوهُ لِيُصَلِّ أَحَدُكُمْ بِنَشَاطِهِ فَإِذَا فَتَرَ فَلْيَقْعُدْ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "None of you will be saved by his actions alone." They said, "Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Not even me, unless Allah covers me with His mercy. So strive, draw near, and seek closeness. And in the morning and evening, walk and take measured steps. Aim for your goal and you will reach it."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ يُنَجِّيهِ عَمَلُهُ قَالُوا وَلَا أَنْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ وَلَا أَنَا إِلَّا أَنْ يَتَغَمَّدَنِي اللهُ مِنْهُ بِرَحْمَةٍ سَدِّدُوا وَقَارِبُوا أَوْ قَرِّبُوا وَرُوحُوا وَاغْدُوا وَخُطًى مِنَ الدُّلْجَةِ وَالْقَصْدَ الْقَصْدَ تَبْلُغُوا  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Verily, this religion is easy, and nobody will make it difficult except that it will overpower him. So, aim for what is right, come close to it, and give glad tidings. Seek help from the early morning and the late evening, and a portion of the night."  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا الدِّينَ يُسْرٌ وَلَنْ يُشَادَّ هَذَا الدِّينَ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا غَلَبَهُ فَسَدِّدُوا وَقَارِبُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا وَاسْتعينُوا بِالْغُدْوَةِ وَالرَّوْحَةِ وَشَيْءٍ مِنَ الدُّلْجَةِ  

[Machine] Buraida said: "I went out and saw the Prophet ﷺ , so I thought that he needed something. I approached him and kept myself away from him. Then he called me and took my hand and saw a man who was excessively bowing and prostrating in prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Do you see him showing off? Do you see him showing off?' Then he released my hand and said, 'You should seek moderation, you should seek moderation.' And he struck one of his hands on the other, meaning that whoever exaggerates in practising this religion will be overburdened."  

قَالَ بُرَيْدَةُ انْطَلَقْتُ فَرَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ لَهُ حَاجَةً فَجَعَلْتُ أُعَارِضُهُ وَأَحْبِسُ عَنْهُ قَالَ فَدَعَانِي فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِي فَرَأَى رَجُلًا يُكْثِرُ الرُّكُوعَ وَالسُّجُودَ فَقَالَ أَتَرَاهُ مُرَائِيًا أَتَرَاهُ مُرَائِيًا؟ قَالَ فَتَرَكَ يَدَهُ مِنْ يَدِي وَقَالَ عَلَيْكُمْ هَدْيًا قَاصِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ هَدْيًا قَاصِدًا وَضَرَبَ بِإِحْدَى يَدَيْهِ عَلَى الْأُخْرَى فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ يُشَادَّ هَذَا الدِّينَ يَغْلِبْهُ  

[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ that he said: "Verily, this religion is strong, so enter into it with gentleness. And do not make people hate the worship of Allah by your attitude towards yourself, for surely the soft earth does not cut the mountain nor does it break it down."  

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا الدِّينَ مَتِينٌ فَأَوْغِلْ فِيهِ بِرِفْقٍ وَلَا تُبَغِّضْ إِلَى نَفْسِكَ عِبَادَةَ اللهِ فَإِنَّ الْمُنْبَتَّ لَا أَرْضًا قَطَعَ وَلَا ظَهْرًا أَبْقَى هَكَذَا  

[Machine] From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said: "Verily, this religion is firm, so enter it gently and do not make it hateful to yourself. Worship your Lord and do not grow tired, for the sprout does not travel nor does it disappear. So do the deeds of a person who assumes that they will never die, and be cautious in a way that fears that you will die tomorrow."  

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا الدِّينَ مَتِينٌ فَأَوْغِلْ فِيهِ بِرِفْقٍ وَلَا تُبَغِّضْ إِلَى نَفْسِكَ عِبَادَةَ رَبِّكَ فَإِنَّ الْمُنْبَتَّ لَا سَفَرًا قَطَعَ وَلَا ظَهْرًا أَبْقَى فَاعْمَلْ عَمَلَ امْرِئٍ يَظُنُّ أَنْ لَنْ يَمُوتَ أَبَدًا وَاحْذَرْ حَذَرًا يَخْشَى أَنْ يَمُوتَ غَدًا  

[Machine] "Economy in the Sunnah is better than innovation through effort. This is narrated from Al-Hasan, from the Prophet ﷺ, as a mutawatir hadith with an additional wording."  

الِاقْتِصَادُ فِي السُّنَّةِ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ الِاجْتِهَادِ فِي الْبِدْعَةِ هَذَا مَوْقُوفٌ وَرُوِيَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مُرْسَلًا بِزِيَادَةِ أَلْفَاظٍ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque and saw a rope extended between two posts. He asked, "What is this rope?" They replied, "It belongs to so-and-so. When she prays, she holds onto it. If she feels weak or tired during prayer, she holds onto it for support." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let her pray without holding onto it. What has happened to her mind? If she feels afraid of being weakened, she should sleep."  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ فَرَأَى حَبْلًا مَمْدُودًا بَيْنَ سَارِيَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا الْحَبْلُ؟ قَالُوا لِفُلَانَةَ تُصَلِّي فَإِذَا غُلِبَتْ تَعَلَّقَتْ بِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِتُصَلِّي مَا عَقِلَتْ فَإِذَا خَشِيَتْ أَنْ تُغْلَبَ فَلْتَنَمْ
