I was in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the expedition of Tabuk. He abandoned the main road before the dawn prayer, and I also did the same along with him. The Prophet ﷺ made his camel kneel down and (went to ) relieve himself. He then came back and I poured water upon his hands from the skin-vessel. He then washed his hands and face. He tried to get his forearms out (of the gown), but the sleeves of the gown were too narrow, so he entered back both his hands, and brought them out from beneath the gown. He washed his forearms up to the elbows and wiped his head and wiped over his socks.80 He then mounted (his camel) and we began to proceed until we found people offering the prayer. They brought forward ‘Abd al-Rahman b. ‘Awf who was leading them in prayer. The Prophet ﷺ stood in the row side by side with other Muslims. He performed the second rak’ah of the prayer behind ‘Abd al-Rahman b. ‘Awf. Then ‘Abd al-Rahman uttered salutation. The Prophet ﷺ stood to perform the remaining rak’ah of the prayer. The Muslims were alarmed. They began to utter tasbih (Subhan Allah) presuming that they had offered prayer before the Prophet ﷺ had done. When he uttered the salutation (i.e. finished his prayer), he said: You were right, or (he said) you did well. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 149)   

أَنَّهُ سَارَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ فَلَمَّا دَنَا الْفَجْرُ عَدَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَعَدَلْتُ مَعَهُ فَأَنَاخَ فَتَبَرَّزَ وَمَعِي إِدَاوَةٌ فِيهَا مَاءٌ فَلَمَّا جَاءَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَمَرَنِي فَسَكَبْتُ عَلَى يَدِهِ مِنَ الْإِدَاوَةِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَجْهَهُ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ يَحْسِرُ عَنْ ذِرَاعَيْهِ فَضَاقَ كُمَّا جُبَّةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَدْخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَدَيْهِ فِي جُبَّتِهِ فَأَخْرَجَهُمَا مِنْ تَحْتِ الْجُبَّةِ فَغَسَلَهُمَا إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَتَوَضَّأَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَقْبَلَ مَعَهُ الْمُغِيرَةُ فَوَجَدَ النَّاسَ قَدْ أَقَامُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَقَدَّمُوا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَوْفٍ يُصَلِّي لَهُمْ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ رَكْعَةً مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَفَّ مَعَ النَّاسِ وَرَاءَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُتِمُّ صَلَاتَهُ فَفَزِعَ النَّاسُ لِذَلِكَ وَأَكْثَرُوا التَّسْبِيحَ فَلَمَّا قَضَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاتَهُ قَالَ لِلنَّاسِ قَدْ أَصَبْتُمْ أَوْ أَحْسَنْتُمْ كَذَا قَالَا فِي إِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ عَبَّادٍ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ وَحَمْزَةَ  

[Machine] He said, "When the Prophet ﷺ finished his prayer, he faced them and said, 'You have done well or you have done rightly.' He envied them for performing the prayer at its proper time." Ibn Juraij said that Ibn Shihab narrated it from Ismail ibn Muhammad ibn Saad, who heard it from Hamzah ibn al-Mughirah, similar to the hadith of Abbad. Al-Mughirah said, "I wanted to delay Abdul Rahman ibn Auf, but the Prophet ﷺ said to leave him." Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us about this. Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated it from Ahmad ibn Salamah and Ibrahim ibn Abi Talib, who said that Muhammad ibn Rafi' narrated it from Abdul Razzaq, who informed about Ibn Juraij.  

أَنْ قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَضَى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ صَلَاتَهُ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَحْسَنْتُمْ أَوْ قَدْ أَصَبْتُمْ يَغْبِطُهُمْ أَنْ صَلُّوا الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ حَمْزَةَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ عَبَّادٍ قَالَ الْمُغِيرَةُ فَأَرَدْتُ تَأْخِيرَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ دَعْهُ أَخْبَرَنَاهُ بِذَلِكَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ وَإِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ قَالَا ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أنبأ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ  

[Machine] I witnessed the celebration with Umar. And I witnessed the celebration with Ali and Uthman are present.  

شَهِدْتُ الْعِيدَ مَعَ عُمَرَ ؓ وَشَهِدْتُ الْعِيدَ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ وَعُثْمَانُ مَحْصُورٌ  

[Machine] He entered upon Uthman while he was confined and Ali was leading the people in prayer. He said, "I am reluctant to pray with these people while you are the leader." Uthman said to him, "Indeed, prayer is the best of people's actions. When you see them doing good, join them in doing good, and when you see them doing wrong, avoid their wrongdoing."  

أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ ؓ وَهُوَ مَحْصُورٌ وَعَلِيٌّ ؓ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أُحْرَجُ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ مَعَ هَؤُلَاءِ وَأَنْتَ الْإِمَامُ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ أَحْسَنُ مَا عَمِلَ النَّاسُ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ فَأَحْسِنْ مَعَهُمْ وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ يُسِيئُونَ فَاجْتَنِبْ مُسِيئَهُمْ  

[Machine] Abdullah ibn Umar then came forward and stood in front of the people.  

لَهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ إِذًا تَقَدَّمْ أَنْتَ فَصَلِّ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ النَّاسِ
