The mosque (of the Prophet) during his lifetime was built with bricks, its roof with branches of the palm-tree, and its pillars with palm-wood, as Mujahid said: Abu Bakr did not add anything to it. But 'Umar added to it; he built as it was built during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with bricks and branches, and he changed its pillars. Mujahid said: Its pillars were made of wood. 'Uthman changed it altogether with increasing addition. He built its walls with decorated stone and lime. And he built the pillars with decorated stone and its roof with teak. Mujahid said: Its roof was made of teak. Abu Dawud said: Al-Qassah means lime used as mortar. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 451)   

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ الْمَسْجِدَ كَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَبْنِيًّا بِاللَّبِنِ وَسَقْفُهُ الْجَرِيدُ وَعُمُدُهُ خَشَبُ عَسِيبِ النَّخْلِ فَلَمْ يَزِدْ فِيهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ شَيْئًا وَزَادَ فِيهِ عُمَرُ وَبَنَاهُ عَلَى بِنَائِهِ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِاللَّبِنِ وَالْجَرِيدِ وَأَعَادَ عُمُدَهُ خَشَبًا ثُمَّ غَيَّرَهُ عُثْمَانُ فَزَادَ فِيهِ زِيَادَةً كَثِيرَةً وَبَنَى جِدَارَهُ بِالْحِجَارَةِ الْمَنْقُوشَةِ وَالْقَصَّةِ وَجَعَلَ عُمُدَهُ مِنْ حِجَارَةٍ مَنْقُوشَةٍ وَسَقْفَهُ بِالسَّاجِ  

Messenger of Allah ﷺ came over to Medina and encamped at the upper side of Medina among the tribe known as Banu 'Amr b. 'Awf. He stayed among them for fourteen days. He then sent someone to call Banu al-Najjar. They came to him hanging their swords from the necks. Anas then said: As if I am looking at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting on his mount and Abu Bakr seated behind him, and Banu al-Najjar standing around him. He descended in the courtyard of Abu Ayyub. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say his prayer in the folds of the sheep and goats. He commanded us to build a mosque. He then sent for Banu al-Najjar and said to them: Banu al-Najjar, sell this land of yours to me for some price. They replied: By Allah, we do not want any price (from you) except from Allah. Anas said: I tell what this land contained. It contained the graves of the disbelievers, dung-hills, and some trees of date-palm. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded and the graves of the disbelievers were dug open, and the trees of the date-palm were cut off. The wood of the date-palm were erected in front of the mosque ; the door-steps wre built of stone. They were reciting verses carrying the stones. The Prophet ﷺ also joined them (in reciting verses) saying: O Allah, there is no good except the good of the Hereafter. So grant you aid to the Ansar and the Muhajirah. قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ فَنَزَلَ فِي عُلْوِ الْمَدِينَةِ فِي حَيٍّ يُقَالُ لَهُمْ بَنُو عَمْرِو بْنِ عَوْفٍ فَأَقَامَ فِيهِمْ أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ إِلَى بَنِي النَّجَّارِ فَجَاءُوا مُتَقَلِّدِينَ بِسُيُوفِهِمْ قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ رِدْفُهُ وَمَلَأُ بَنِي النَّجَّارِ حَوْلَهُ حَتَّى أَلْقَى بِفِنَاءِ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي حَيْثُ أَدْرَكَتْهُ الصَّلَاةُ وَيُصَلِّي فِي مَرَابِضِ الْغَنَمِ وَأَنَّهُ أَمَرَ بِبِنَاءِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى بَنِي النَّجَّارِ ثَامِنُونِي بِحَائِطِكُمْ هَذَا فَقَالُوا وَاللهِ لَا نَطْلُبُ ثَمَنَهُ إِلَّا إِلَى اللهِ قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَكَانَ فِيهِ مَا أَقُولُ لَكُمْ كَانَتْ فِيهِ قُبُورُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَكَانَتْ فِيهِ خِرَبٌ وَكَانَ فِيهِ نَخْلٌ فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِقُبُورِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَنُبِشَتْ وَبِالْخِرَبِ فَسُوِّيَتْ وَبِالنَّخْلِ فَقُطِعَ وَصَفُّوا النَّخْلَ قِبْلَةَ الْمَسْجِدِ وَجَعَلُوا عِضَادَتَيْهِ حِجَارَةً وَجَعَلُوا يَنْقُلُونَ الصَّخْرَ وَهُمْ يَرْتَجِزُونَ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَعَهُمْ وَيَقُولُونَ اللهُمَّ لَا خَيْرَ إِلَّا خَيْرَ الْآخِرَةِ فَانْصُرِ الْأَنْصَارَ وَالْمُهَاجِرَةَ 4296 وَأنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو النَّضْرِ الْفَقِيهُ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ الْإِمَامُ وَإِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَا ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى أنبأ عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ فَذَكَرَهُ بِنَحْوِهِ  

[Machine] A woman from the tribe of Sulaym informed me that she had given birth to a child from among the people of our household. She said that the Prophet ﷺ sent a message to Uthman ibn Talhah and said, "I saw the two horns of a ram when I entered the house, and I forgot to command you to slaughter them. It is not appropriate for there to be anything in the house that distracts the one who is praying."  

أَخْبَرَتْنِي امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ وَلَدَتْ عَامَّةَ أَهْلِ دَارِنَا قَالَتْ أَرْسَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ قَرْنَيِ الْكَبْشِ حِينَ دَخَلْتُ الْبَيْتَ فَنَسِيتُ أَنْ آمُرَكَ تُخَمِّرُهُمَا فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي الْبَيْتِ مَا يَشْغَلُ مُصَلِّيًا  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I was not commanded to build the mosque." Ibn Abbas said, "You should adorn it as the Jews and Christians adorned their places of worship." This is the wording of the hadith of Ar-Ruzdibari, and in the narration of Abu Sa'eed it mentioned the mosques but did not mention the Christians.  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا أُمِرْتُ بِتَشْيِيدِ الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ لَتُزَخْرِفُنَّهَا كَمَا زَخْرَفَتِ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ الرُّوذَبَارِيِّ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَسَاجِدَ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ النَّصَارَى  

The Prophet ﷺ said: The Last Hour will not come until people vie with one another about mosques. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 449)   

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَتَبَاهَى النَّاسُ بِالْمَسَاجِدِ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Build mosques and make them gathering places."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ابْنُوا الْمَسَاجِدَ وَاتَّخِذُوهَا جُمًّا  

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ أُمِرْتُ بِالْمَسَاجِدِ جُمًّا وَعَنْ لَيْثٍ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَرْشُ النَّاسِ كَعَرْشِ مُوسَى يَعْنِي أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ الطَّاقَ فِي حَوَالَيِ الْمَسْجِدِ  

[Machine] To pray in a magnificent mosque.  

أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ فِي مَسْجِدٍ مُشْرِفٍ  

[Machine] "To build mosques together and cities honorably. He said: 'A group of groups that have no honor.' And likewise, construction, when it does not have honor, is a gathering of gatherings."  

أَنْ نَبْنِيَ الْمَسَاجِدَ جُمًّا وَالْمَدَائِنَ شُرَفًا قَوْلُهُ جُمٌّ الْجُمُّ الَّتِي لَا شُرَفَ لَهَا وَكَذَلِكَ الْبِنَاءُ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ شُرَفٌ فَهُوَ أَجَمُّ وَجَمْعُهُ جُمٌّ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Beware of these slaughterhouses, meaning the places of slaughter."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اتَّقُوا هَذِهِ الْمَذَابِحَ يَعْنِي الْمَحَارِيبَ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a group of people who were building a mosque. He said, "Make it bigger so that it can be filled." Abu Sa'id ibn Abi Amr narrated that Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated from Yahya ibn Abi Talib, who narrated from Abu Dawud al-Tayyalis, who narrated from Muhammad ibn Durham, who narrated from Ka'b ibn Abdur Rahman, from his father, from Abu Qatadah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited a group of the Ansar while they were constructing a mosque for themselves. He said, "Make it bigger so that it can be filled." This hadith has different opinions regarding its chain of narration.  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّ بِقَوْمٍ قَدْ أَسَّسُوا مَسْجِدًا؛ لِيَبْنُوهُ فَقَالَ أَوْسِعُوهُ تُمْلَئُوهُ قَالَ فَأَوْسَعُوهُ 4306 أنبأ أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ دِرْهَمٍ عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَتَى عَلَى قَوْمٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَهُمْ يَبْنُونَ مَسْجِدًا لَهُمْ فَقَالَ أَوْسِعُوهُ تُمْلَئُوهُ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ قَدِ اخْتُلِفَ فِي إِسْنَادِهِ  

The Prophet (nay peace be upon him) commanded him to build a mosque at Ta'if where the idols were placed. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 450)
