[Machine] Aisha, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished slaughtering the meat, he prayed seven units of prayer. He only sat in the sixth unit to praise Allah and supplicate to his Lord, then he stood up without giving the salaam. Then he sat in the seventh unit to praise Allah and supplicate to his Lord, then he gave the salaam in a way that was audible to us. Then he prayed two units of prayer while sitting, and those are nine units, O my son. And he mentioned the hadith.

عَائِشَةُ فَلَمَّا أَسَنَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَحَمَلَ اللَّحْمَ صَلَّى سَبْعَ رَكَعَاتٍ لَا يَجْلِسُ إِلَّا فِي السَّادِسَةِ فَيَحْمَدُ اللهَ وَيَدْعُو رَبَّهُ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ وَلَا يُسَلِّمُ ثُمَّ يَجْلِسُ فِي السَّابِعَةِ فَيَحْمَدُ اللهَ وَيَدْعُو رَبَّهُ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ تَسْلِيمَةً يُسْمِعُنَا ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَتِلْكَ تِسْعٌ يَا بُنَيَّ وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ

[Machine] Abdullah al-Witr said, "There are three witr prayers in the evening, this is a correct hadith from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, not raised to the Prophet ﷺ, and it was raised by Yahya ibn Zakariya ibn Abi al-Hawajib al-Kufi from al-A'mash, who is weak, and his narration contradicts the narration of the majority from al-A'mash."

قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ الْوِتْرُ ثَلَاثٌ كَوِتْرِ النَّهَارِ الْمَغْرِبِ هَذَا صَحِيحٌ مِنْ حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ غَيْرَ مَرْفُوعٍ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَقَدْ رَفَعَهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي الْحَوَاجِبِ الْكُوفِيُّ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ وَرِوَايَتُهُ تُخَالِفُ رِوَايَةَ الْجَمَاعَةِ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ

[Machine] "Abdullah al-Witr said, 'It is either seven or five, and not less than three.' It was reported by Al-A'mash from Ibrahim, who said, 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud said this, while he was discontinuous and suspended.'"

قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ الْوِتْرُ سَبْعٌ أَوْ خَمْسٌ وَلَا أَقَلُّ مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ وَقِيلَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ وَهُوَ مُنْقَطِعٌ وَمَوْقُوفٌ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not offer the Salam in the two units of Witr prayer as such.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا يُسَلِّمُ فِي رَكْعَتَيِ الْوِتْرِ كَذَا

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not make it difficult for yourselves with three things: resembling the Maghrib prayer, performing the Witr prayer with seven units, or performing it with five units."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تُوتِرُوا بِثَلَاثٍ تُشَبِّهُوا بِصَلَاةِ الْمَغْرِبِ أَوْتِرُوا بِسَبْعٍ أَوْ بِخَمْسٍ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not be steadfast in praying three rak'ahs that resemble the Maghrib (sunset) prayer, but rather be steadfast in praying five rak'ahs or seven rak'ahs or nine rak'ahs or eleven rak'ahs or more than that." Ibn Bukair narrated this from Al-Layth.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تُوتِرُوا بِثَلَاثٍ تُشَبِّهُوا بِالْمَغْرِبِ وَلَكِنْ أَوْتِرُوا بِخَمْسٍ أَوْ بِسَبْعٍ أَوْ بِتِسْعٍ أَوْ بِإِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَرَوَاهُ ابْنُ بُكَيْرٍ عَنِ اللَّيْثِ كَمَا

The above mentioned tradition has also been transmitted in a similar manner by Ibn 'Abbas from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1491)

فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ مَوْقُوفًا

[Machine] The prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at night, it was said: He used to pray thirteen Rak'ahs at night. He would pray nine Rak'ahs while standing, making odd numbers in them, and he would pray two Rak'ahs while sitting. When he wanted to prostrate, he would stand up, then perform a Rak'ah and prostrate. He would do this after Witr prayer, and he would pray two Rak'ahs when he heard the call to Fajr prayer.

صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يُصَلِّي تِسْعَ رَكَعَاتٍ قَائِمًا يُوتِرُ فِيهِنَّ وَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ جَالِسًا فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَسْجُدَ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ وَسَجَدَ يَصْنَعُ ذَلِكَ بَعْدَ الْوِتْرِ وَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ إِذَا سَمِعَ النِّدَاءَ بِالصُّبْحِ

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed two units of prayer after Witr, reciting in them while sitting. When he intended to go into prostration, he stood up and then performed the prostration. Abu Abdullah Ishaq ibn Muhammad al-Sousi narrated to us, Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm narrated to us, reporting from al-Abbas ibn al-Walid, who reported from my father, who reported from al-Awza'i, who reported from Yahya, who mentioned it.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ رَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْوِتْرِ قَرَأَ فِيهِمَا وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَرْكَعَ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ السُّوسِيُّ ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ الْأَصَمُّ أنبأ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي ثنا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ عَنْ يَحْيَى فَذَكَرَهُ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray thirteen rak'ahs during the night, observing the witr prayer with nine (or as she said). He used to pray two rak'ahs while sitting and pray two rak'ahs of the dawn prayer between the adhan and the iqamah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1350)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يُوتِرُ بِتِسْعٍ أَوْ كَمَا قَالَ وَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ وَرَكْعَتَيِ الْفَجْرِ بَيْنَ الْأَذَانِ وَالْإِقَامَةِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to pray nine Rak'ahs in Tahajjud, then he would pray seven Rak'ahs in Witr. After that, he would perform two Rak'ahs while sitting. He would recite in them. When he wanted to perform Rak'ah, he would stand and perform it, then prostrate. Abu Dawood narrated the Hadith twice. Khalid ibn Abd Allah narrated to Muhammad ibn Amr a similar Hadith. Alqamah ibn Waqqas said, "O mother, how did he pray the two Rak'ahs?" So he mentioned the meaning of what we had informed him. Wahb ibn Baqiyyah narrated from Khalid, "The Sheikh said, and we have narrated these two Rak'ahs in the Hadith of Sa'd ibn Hisham from Aisha from the Prophet, ﷺ , and in the narration of Al-Hasan from Sa'd he recites in them, 'Say, O disbelievers,' and when the earthquake occurred."

رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِتِسْعِ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ بِسَبْعِ رَكَعَاتٍ وَرَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ بَعْدَ الْوِتْرِ يَقْرَأُ فِيهِمَا فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَرْكَعَ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ رَوَى الْحَدِيثَيْنِ خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو مِثْلَهُ قَالَ فِيهِ قَالَ عَلْقَمَةُ بْنُ وَقَّاصٍ يَا أُمَّهْ كَيْفَ كَانَ يُصَلِّي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ؟ فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَى مَا حَدَّثَنَاهُ وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ عَنْ خَالِدٍ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَقَدْ رُوِّينَا هَاتَيْنِ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ فِي حَدِيثِ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ سَعْدٍ يَقْرَأُ فِيهِمَا قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَإِذَا زُلْزِلَتْ

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to pray two rak'ahs after Witr while sitting, and this is the view of Al-Basri, and there is no problem with it except that he used to perform tasleem. Ahmad ibn Hanbal and others said this, and Allah knows best. It was narrated from Zakariya ibn Hakim from Al-Hasan, and Hisham differed from them. They narrated it from Al-Hasan and from Sa'ad ibn Hisham from Aisha. Al-Bukhari said: "And this is the most authentic."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي بَعْدَ الْوِتْرِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ مَيْمُونٌ هَذَا بَصْرِيٌّ وَلَا بَأْسَ بِهِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُدَلِّسُ قَالَهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ وَغَيْرُهُ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ وَرُوِيَ عَنْ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ حَكِيمٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ وَخَالَفَهُمَا هِشَامٌ فَرَوَاهُ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَ الْبُخَارِيُّ وَهَذَا أَصَحُّ

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to pray two rak'ahs after Witr while sitting, and in them he would recite (the surah) 'When the earth is shaken' and (the surah) 'Say: O disbelievers'.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْوِتْرِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ يَقْرَأُ فِيهِمَا إِذَا زُلْزِلَتْ وَقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to pray two units of prayer after Witr while sitting. In the first unit, he would recite Umm Al-Quran (Surah Al-Fatiha) and when he bowed, he would say "O Disbelievers." Abu Ghaleb and Utbah Ibn Abi Hakim reported this and it was narrated by Umara Bin Zadhan from Thabit from Anas regarding Witr - nine units then seven units. He would also pray two units while sitting, however, he would recite Al-Rahman and Al-Waqi'ah. Anas said, "And we would recite the short Surahs when they were revealed and 'O Disbelievers' and others like it."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يُصَلِّي بَعْدَ الْوِتْرِ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ يَقْرَأُ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُولَى بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ وَإِذَا زُلْزِلَتْ وَفِي الثَّانِيَةِ قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ أَبُو غَالِبٍ وَعُتْبَةُ بْنُ أَبِي حَكِيمٍ غَيْرُ قَوِيَّيْنِ وَرَوَاهُ عُمَارَةُ بْنُ زَاذَانَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ فِي الْوِتْرِ بِتِسْعٍ ثُمَّ بِسَبْعٍ وَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ وَقَرَأَ فِيهِنَّ بِالرَّحْمَنِ وَالْوَاقِعَةِ قَالَ أَنَسٌ وَنَحْنُ نَقْرَأُ بِالسُّوَرِ الْقِصَارِ إِذَا زُلْزِلَتْ وَقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَنَحْوِهِمَا

[Machine] On the authority of Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who said: "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during a journey, and he said about this journey, 'It is tiring and burdensome. When any one of you observes the last prayer of the night, let him perform two units of prayer (rak'ahs) before Witr (the final prayer of the night). If he wakes up (in the last part of the night), otherwise they will be counted for him.' The Imam (may Allah, the Most High, have mercy on him) said: It is possible that what is meant by it is two units of prayer after Witr, and it is also possible that what is meant is if he wants to perform Witr, then let him perform two units of prayer before it."

عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ فَقَالَ فِي هَذَا السَّفَرِ جَهْدٌ وَثُقْلٌ فَإِذَا أَوْتَرَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَإِنِ اسْتَيْقَظَ وَإِلَّا كَانَتَا لَهُ قَالَ الْإِمَامُ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ تَعَالَى يَحْتَمِلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ الْمُرَادُ بِهِ رَكْعَتَانِ بَعْدَ الْوِتْرِ وَيَحْتَمِلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ أَرَادَ فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يُوتِرَ فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْوِتْرِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform nine units of voluntary prayer at night. When he grew older and became heavy, he reduced it to seven units. He would also perform two units of prayer while sitting, and in those two units, he would recite Surah Ar-Rahman (The Most Gracious) and Surah Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable). Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "We used to recite the shorter Surahs when there was an earthquake, and we would recite Surah Al-Kafirun (The Disbelievers) and similar Surahs." Ammar ibn Zaid differed in reciting the Surahs that the Prophet ﷺ would recite in those two units, according to the other narrators.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِتِسْعِ رَكَعَاتٍ فَلَمَّا أَسَنَّ وَثَقُلَ أَوْتَرَ بِسَبْعٍ وَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَقَرَأَ فِيهِمَا الرَّحْمَنَ وَالْوَاقِعَةَ قَالَ أَنَسٌ وَنَحْنُ نَقْرَأُ بِالسُّوَرِ الْقِصَارِ إِذَا زُلْزِلَتْ وَقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَنَحْوِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَرَّةً يَقْرَأُ فِيهِنَّ خَالَفَ عُمَارَةُ بْنُ زَاذَانَ فِي قِرَاءَةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِيهِمَا سَائِرَ الرُّوَاةِ

[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to perform Witr prayer with seven (units) until he gained weight or his flesh increased, then he would perform Witr prayer with three (units) and would also perform two additional units while sitting, reciting in them the verse "Say, O disbelievers." Abu Sa'ad Al-Maalini narrated to us, Abu Ahmad bin 'Adi informed us, Ahmad bin Ali bin Al-Muthanna informed us, Abdul Wahid bin Ghayath informed us, Umamah bin Zathan narrated to me, and Abu Galib mentioned it. Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy upon him) used to say that Umamah bin Zathan would sometimes have some confusion in his narration.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِسَبْعٍ حَتَّى إِذَا بَدَّنَ وَكَثُرَ لَحْمُهُ أَوْتَرَ بِثَلَاثٍ وَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ يَقْرَأُ فِيهِمَا إِذَا زُلْزِلَتْ وَقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو سَعْدٍ الْمَالِينِيُّ أنبأ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ ثنا عُمَارَةُ بْنُ زَاذَانَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو غَالِبٍ فَذَكَرَهُ وَكَانَ الْبُخَارِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ يَقُولُ عُمَارَةُ بْنُ زَاذَانَ رُبَّمَا يَضْطَرِبُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ

[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ who said, "Make the last of your prayers at night a Witr prayer."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ اجْعَلُوا آخِرَ صَلَاتِكُمْ بِاللَّيْلِ وِتْرًا

He who observed the night prayer should make Witr the end of his prayer before dawn. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to order them thus. (Using translation from Muslim 751c)

أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ يَقُولُ مَنْ صَلَّى مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَلْيَجْعَلْ آخِرَ صَلَاتِهِ وِتْرًا قَبْلَ الصُّبْحِ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْمُرُهُمْ

A person asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as I stood between him (the Holy Prophet) and the inquirer and he said: Messenger of Allah, how is the night prayer? He (the Holy Prophet) said: It consists of pairs of rak'ahs, but if you apprehend morning, you should pray one rak'ah and make the end of your prayer as Witr. Then a person asked him (the Holy Prophet) at the end of the year and I was at that place near the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ; but I do not know whether he was the same person or another person, but he (the Holy Prophet) gave him the same reply. أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَأَنَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ السَّائِلِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ؟ قَالَ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا خَشِيتَ الصُّبْحَ فَصَلِّ رَكْعَةً وَاجْعَلْ آخِرَ صَلَاتِكَ وِتْرًا ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ عَلَى رَأْسِ الْحَوْلِ وَأَنَا بِذَلِكَ الْمَكَانِ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَا أَدْرِي هُوَ ذَاكَ الرَّجُلُ أَوْ رَجُلٌ آخَرُ فَقَالَ لَهُ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray at night until the last prayer of his was Witr.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ حَتَّى يَكُونَ آخِرُ صَلَاتِهِ الْوِتْرَ

[Machine] The night prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was said to be thirteen rak'ahs. Then it was mentioned that he prayed eleven rak'ahs and left two rak'ahs. Then, when he was taken (passed away), he was praying nine rak'ahs in the night prayer. The last prayer he prayed at night was the Witr prayer. Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Khuzaimah differed with Muhmal bin Hisham on this matter. Abu Ishaq narrated from Masrooq and the narration of Abu Dawood is the most authentic based on the evidence of what was mentioned from the narration of Ammar bin Ruzayq.

صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِاللَّيْلِ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ يُصَلِّي ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ صَلَّى إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً وَتَرَكَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قُبِضَ حِينَ قُبِضَ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ تِسْعَ رَكَعَاتٍ آخِرُ صَلَاتِهِ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ الْوِتْرُ خَالَفَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ عَنْ مُؤَمَّلِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ فَقَالَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ وَرِوَايَةُ أَبِي دَاوُدَ أَصَحُّ بِدَلِيلِ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ رِوَايَةِ عَمَّارِ بْنِ رُزَيْقٍ

[Machine] Throughout the night, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the Witr prayer and concluded his Witr until dawn.

مِنْ كُلِّ اللَّيْلِ قَدْ أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَانْتَهَى وِتْرُهُ إِلَى السَّحَرِ

'A'isha reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe Witr every night, and he would (at times) complete his Witr at the end of the night. (Using translation from Muslim 745c)

مِنْ كُلِّ اللَّيْلِ أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَانْتَهَى وِتْرُهُ إِلَى آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ

[Machine] Throughout the night, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform the Tahajjud prayer, starting from the beginning of the night, then the middle, and ending it before dawn.

مِنْ كُلِّ اللَّيْلِ قَدْ أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ وَأَوْسَطِهِ وَآخِرِهِ فَانْتَهَى وِتْرُهُ إِلَى السَّحَرِ

I asked 'Aishah about the witr observes by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She replied: Sometime he observed the witr prayer in the early hours of the night, sometimes he observed it at the end of it. I asked: How did he recite the Qur'an ? Did he recite the Qur'an quietly or loudly ? She replied: He did it in any way. Sometimes he recited quietly and sometimes loudly, sometimes he took bath and then slept and sometimes he performed ablution and then slept. Abu Dawud said: The narrators other than Qutaibah said: This refer to his bath due to sexual defilement. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1437)

وِتْرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ رُبَّمَا أَوْتَرَ مِنْ أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ وَرُبَّمَا أَوْتَرَ مِنْ آخِرِهِ قُلْتُ كَيْفَ كَانَتْ قِرَاءَتُهُ كَانَ يُسِرُّ بِالْقِرَاءَةِ أَمْ يَجْهَرُ؟ قَالَتْ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ كَانَ يَفْعَلُ رُبَّمَا أَسَرَّ وَرُبَّمَا جَهَرَ وَرُبَّمَا اغْتَسَلَ وَرُبَّمَا تَوَضَّأَ فَنَامَ

“Whoever among you fears that he will not wake up at the end of the night, let him pray Witr at the beginning of the night, then go to sleep. Whoever hopes that he will wake up at the end of the night, let him pray Witr at the end of the night, for recitation (of the Qur’an) at the end of the night is attended (by the angels), and that is better.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1187)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ خَافَ أَنْ لَا يَسْتَيْقِظَ آخِرَ اللَّيْلِ فَلْيُوتِرْ أَوَّلَهُ ثُمَّ لِيَرْقُدْ وَمَنْ طَمِعَ أَنْ يَسْتَيْقِظَ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ فَلْيُوتِرْ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ فَإِنَّ قِرَاءَةَ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ مَحْضُورَةٌ وَذَلِكَ أَفْضَلُ

He who amongst you is afraid that he may not be able to get up at the end of the night should observe Witr (in the first part) and then sleep, and he who is confident of getting up and praying at night (i. e. Tahajjud prayer) should observe it at the end of it, for the recitation at the end of the night is witnessed*, and that is better. *: meaning, "by angels" (Sharh an-Nawawi) (Using translation from Muslim 755b)

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ أَيُّكُمْ خَافَ أَنْ لَا يَقُومَ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ فَلْيُوتِرْ ثُمَّ لِيَرْقُدْ وَمَنْ وَثِقَ بِقِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ فَلْيُوتِرْ مِنْ آخِرِهِ فَإِنَّ قِرَاءَةَ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ مَحْضُورَةٌ وَذَلِكَ أَفْضَلُ

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ asked Abu Bakr, "When do you pray the Witr prayer?" Abu Bakr replied, "I pray Witr before I sleep." The Prophet ﷺ then asked Umar, "When do you pray the Witr prayer?" Umar replied, "I sleep and then pray Witr." The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, "Have you taken the firm resolution or made the firm intention?" And he said to Umar, "Have you taken strong measures?" أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ مَتَى تُوتِرُ؟ قَالَ أُوتِرُ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَنَامَ وَقَالَ لِعُمَرَ ؓ مَتَى تُوتِرُ؟ قَالَ أَنَامُ ثُمَّ أُوتِرُ فَقَالَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ أَخَذْتَ بِالْحَزْمِ أَوْ بِالْوَثِيقَةِ وَقَالَ لِعُمَرَ ؓ أَخَذْتَ بِالْقُوَّةِ 4840 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي قَالَا ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ هُوَ الْأَصَمُّ ثنا أَبُو أُمَيَّةَ الطَّرَسُوسِيُّ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ فَذَكَرَهُ بِمَعْنَاهُ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَخَذَ بِالْحَزْمِ وَلَمْ يَشُكَّ

[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, "When do you pray the Witr (night prayer)?" He said, "I pray the Witr and then sleep." He said, "With determination, I also asked Umar, and he said, 'When do you pray the Witr?' I said, 'I sleep and then wake up during the night and pray the Witr.'" He said, "The action of a strong person, you have done."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ مَتَى تُوتِرُ؟ قَالَ أُوتِرُ ثُمَّ أَنَامُ قَالَ بِالْحَزْمِ أَخَذْتَ وَسَأَلَ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ مَتَى تُوتِرُ؟ قَالَ أَنَامُ ثُمَّ أَقُومُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَأُوتِرُ قَالَ فِعْلُ الْقَوِيِّ فَعَلْتَ

[Machine] My friend, Khalil, advised me to do three things: fasting three days of every month, praying two units of Duha (forenoon prayer), and performing the Witr prayer before going to sleep. Abu Amr Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Adib informed us, Abu Bakr al-Isma'ili narrated to us, Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Firyabi narrated to us, Shayban ibn Farrokh narrated to us, and Abdul Warith mentioned it with a similar narration except that he said, "Abu Uthman, meaning al-Nahdi, narrated to me."

أَوْصَانِي خَلِيلِي ﷺ بِثَلَاثٍ بِصِيَامِ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ وَرَكْعَتَيِ الضُّحَى وَأَنْ أُوتِرَ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَرْقُدَ 4843 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْأَدِيبُ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْفِرْيَابِيُّ ثنا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ فَذَكَرَهُ بِمِثْلِهِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عُثْمَانَ يَعْنِي النَّهْدِيَّ

Qays ibn Talq said: Talq ibn Ali visited us on a certain day during Ramadan. He remained with us till evening and broke fast with us. He then stood up and led us in the witr prayer. He then went to his mosque and led them in prayer. When the witr remained, he put forward another man and said: Lead your companions in the witr prayer, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: There are no two witrs during one night. سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَا وِتْرَانِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ

[Machine] Abdullah ibn Umar used to perform the "witr" prayer at the beginning of the night. When he got up to pray, he would cancel his "witr" prayer and then pray again. He would then perform another "witr" prayer at the end of the night. Omar used to perform his "witr" prayer at the end of the night and he was better than both Abdullah and myself. Abu Bakr used to perform the "witr" prayer at the beginning of the night and then intercede with another prayer at the end of the night, intending by that to pray in pairs (two units at a time) and not cancel his "witr" prayer.

كَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ يُوتِرُ أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ فَإِذَا قَامَ نَقَضَ وِتْرَهُ ثُمَّ صَلَّى ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ آخِرَ صَلَاتِهِ أَوَاخِرَ اللَّيْلِ وَكَانَ عُمَرُ يُوتِرُ آخِرَ اللَّيْلِ وَكَانَ خَيْرًا مِنِّي وَمِنْهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُوتِرُ أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ وَيَشْفَعُ آخِرَهُ يُرِيدُ بِذَلِكَ يُصَلِّي مَثْنَى مَثْنَى وَلَا يَنْقُضُ وِتْرَهُ

[Machine] If you pray the first part of the night prayer, do not pray the last part of it. And if you pray the last part of it, do not pray the first part of it. And I asked 'Aa'idh ibn 'Amr, who was one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, about breaking the odd number prayer (Witr). He said, "If you pray the first part of it, do not pray the last part of it. And if you pray the last part of it, do not pray the first part of it." Al-Bukhari narrated the hadith of 'Aa'idh ibn 'Amr in the sahih. He said, "And he was among the companions of the tree, from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ."

إِذَا أَوْتَرْتَ أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ فَلَا تُوتِرْ آخِرَهُ وَإِذَا أَوْتَرْتَ آخِرَهُ فَلَا تُوتِرْ أَوَّلَهُ وَسَأَلْتُ عَائِذَ بْنَ عَمْرٍو وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ نَقْضِ الْوِتْرِ فَقَالَ إِذَا أَوْتَرْتَ أَوَّلَهُ فَلَا تُوتِرْ آخِرَهُ وَإِذَا أَوْتَرْتَ آخِرَهُ فَلَا تُوتِرْ أَوَّلَهُ أَخْرَجَ الْبُخَارِيُّ حَدِيثَ عَائِذِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو فِي الصَّحِيحِ قَالَ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الشَّجَرَةِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ

[Machine] He asked Abu Hurairah how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform the Witr prayer. Abu Hurairah remained silent, then he asked him again and he remained silent, then he asked him again and he remained silent. Then he said, "If you wish, I will tell you how I do it." He said, "I asked him to tell me, so he said, 'When I pray Isha, I pray five units afterward, then I sleep. If I wake up during the night, I pray two units at a time. If morning comes, I pray the odd-numbered units.'"

أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ كَيْفَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ؟ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ فَسَكَتَ ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ فَسَكَتَ ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ فَقَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَخْبَرْتُكَ كَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ أَنَا قَالَ فَقُلْتُ فَأَخْبِرْنِي فَقَالَ إِذَا صَلَّيْتُ الْعِشَاءَ صَلَّيْتُ بَعْدَهَا خَمْسَ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ أَنَامُ فَإِنْ قُمْتُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ صَلَّيْتُ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِنْ أَصْبَحْتُ أَصْبَحْتُ عَلَى وِتْرٍ

[Machine] That is the one who plays with his lute, meaning the one who tightens the strings and then sleeps. When he wakes up, he performs a voluntary unit of prayer, then he prays, meaning then he repeats his lute.

ذَلِكَ الَّذِي يَلْعَبُ بِوِتْرِهِ يَعْنِي الَّذِي يُوتِرُ ثُمَّ يَنَامُ فَإِذَا قَامَ شَفَعَ بِرَكْعَةٍ ثُمَّ صَلَّى يَعْنِي ثُمَّ أَعَادَ وِتْرَهُ

[Machine] Ali said: "There are three types of Witr prayer. Whoever wants to perform the first part of the night Witr, they should pray Witr and then wake up to pray a variation of Rak'ah (unit of prayer) and perform two more Rak'ahs until morning. Then they should perform Witr. And if they wish, they can pray two Rak'ahs until morning. And if they wish, they can perform the last part of the night Witr."

قَالَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ الْوِتْرُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَنْوَاعٍ فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَنْ يُوتِرَ أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ أَوْتَرَ ثُمَّ اسْتَيْقَظَ فَشَاءَ أَنْ يَشْفَعَهَا بِرَكْعَةٍ وَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ ثُمَّ يُوتِرَ فَعَلَ وَإِنْ شَاءَ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ وَإِنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ آخِرَ اللَّيْلِ

[Machine] I heard Ali saying: "Witr prayer has three types, so whoever wishes can perform the first part of the night, then if he prays, pray two units of prayer until morning. And whoever wishes can perform the Witr prayer, then if he prays, pray one unit as a mediator for his Witr, then pray two units, then perform Witr. And whoever wishes, does not perform Witr until it is his last prayer."

سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا ؓ يَقُولُ الْوِتْرُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَنْوَاعٍ فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ إِنْ صَلَّى صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ ثُمَّ إِنَّ صَلَّى صَلَّى رَكْعَةً شَفْعًا لِوِتْرِهِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ لَمْ يُوتِرْ حَتَّى يَكُونَ آخِرَ صَلَاتِهِ

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to recite in Witr in the first rakah, "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High," and in the second rakah, "Say, 'O disbelievers!'" and in the third rakah, "Say, 'He is Allah, the One.'" And say, "I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak," and say, "I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind." This is the wording of the hadith of Abu Abdullah, and in the narration of Al-Alawiyy, it is mentioned that Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated from 'Umrah bint 'Abdul Rahman, and the rest of the wording is the same.

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَقْرَأُ فِي الْوِتْرِ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُولَى بِسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى وَفِي الثَّانِيَةِ قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَفِي الثَّالِثَةِ قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ الْعَلَوِيِّ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عَمْرَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَالْبَاقِي بِمَعْنَاهُ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in the two rak'ahs of the Witr prayer after them: "Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High" and "Say: O disbelievers" and he used to recite in the Witr prayer: "Say: He is Allah, the One" and "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak" and "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind" 4853. And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz narrated to us, on the authority of Al-Husain bin Al-Hasan bin Ayyub, on the authority of Abu Hatim Al-Razi, on the authority of Sa'id bin 'Ufair, on the authority of Yahya bin Ayyub, who mentioned it in a similar manner.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقْرَأُ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ اللَّتَيْنِ يُوتِرُ بَعْدَهُمَا بِسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى وَقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَيَقْرَأُ فِي الْوِتْرِ بِقُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ 4853 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ ثنا أَبُو حَاتِمٍ الرَّازِيُّ ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عُفَيْرٍ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ فَذَكَرَهُ بِنَحْوِهِ

“We asked ‘Aishah what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in Witr. She said: ‘He used to recite: “Glorify the Name of your Lord the Most High,” [Al-A’la (87)] in the first Rak’ah, ‘Say: “O disbelievers!’” [Al- Kafirun (109)] in the second Rak’ah, and ‘Say: Allah is One’ in the third and the Mu’awwidhatain (Chapter 113, 114).’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1173)

سَأَلْنَا عَائِشَةَ بِأِيِّ شَيْءٍ كَانَ يَقْرَأُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْوِتْرِ؟ فَقَالَتْ كَانَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُولَى بِسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى وَفِي الثَّانِيَةِ بِقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَفِي الثَّالِثَةِ بِقُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ وَالْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform Witr and recite: ‘Glorify the Name of your Lord the Most High.’, [Al-A’la (87)] ‘Say: O you disbelievers!” [Al-Kafirun (109)] and ‘Say: Allah is One.”. [Al-Ikhlas (112)] (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1171)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى وَقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَقُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to perform the Witr prayer with the recitation of "Subhan Allahi-l-A`la" and "Qul ya ayyuhal kafirun" and "Huwa Allahu ahad". Ali said, as well as...

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى وَقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَقُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ وَكَذَلِكَ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform Witr prayer with recitations of "Subhan Allahi al-A'la" and "Say: O disbelievers" and "Say: He is Allah, the One." And in the narration of Isra'il, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform Witr prayer, and Zuhair ibn Mu'awiya disagreed with them and narrated it differently.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى وَقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَقُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ إِسْرَائِيلَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ وَقَدْ خَالَفَهُمَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ فَرَوَاهُ

[Machine] He used to recite three chapters: So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High, and say, "O disbelievers," and say, "He is Allah, the One." Ismael said it and Zuhair stopped him, and Isra'il repeated it.

أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِثَلَاثِ سُوَرٍ بِسَبِّحِ اسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى وَقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَقُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ قَالَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ وَقَفَهُ زُهَيْرٌ وَرَفَعَهُ إِسْرَائِيلُ

[Machine] Teach me, O Messenger of Allah, what to say in my Witr prayer when I raise my head and only Sujood remains (to be performed). O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, make me well among those whom You have made well, take care of me among those whom You have taken care of, bless me in what You have given me, and protect me from the evil that You have decreed. Indeed, You decree and none can decree upon You. No one who You have befriended will be humiliated, and no one who You have opposed will be honored. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted are You. This wording is specific to Abu Bakr ibn Shaybah al-Hazami, and it has been narrated in the Qunut of the Fajr prayer after the Ruku'. It is what is recommended to rely upon, and the Qunut of Witr prayer is based on it by analogy.

عَلِّمْنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي وِتْرِي إِذَا رَفَعْتُ رَأْسِي وَلَمْ يَبْقَ إِلَّا السُّجُودُ اللهُمَّ اهْدِنِي فِيمَنْ هَدَيْتَ وَعَافِنِي فِيمَنْ عَافَيْتَ وَتَوَلَّنِي فِيمَنْ تَوَلَّيْتَ وَبَارِكْ لِي فِيمَا أَعْطَيْتَ وَقِنِي شَرَّ مَا قَضَيْتَ إِنَّكَ تَقْضِي وَلَا يُقْضَى عَلَيْكَ إِنَّهُ لَا يَذِلُّ مَنْ وَالَيْتَ وَلَا يَعِزُّ مَنْ عَادَيْتَ تَبَارَكْتَ رَبَّنَا وَتَعَالَيْتَ تَفَرَّدَ بِهَذَا اللَّفْظِ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ شَيْبَةَ الْحِزَامِيُّ وَقَدْ رُوِّينَا فِي قُنُوتِ صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ بَعْدَ الرُّكُوعِ مَا يُوجِبُ الِاعْتِمَادَ عَلَيْهِ وَقُنُوتُ الْوِتْرِ قِيَاسٌ عَلَيْهِ

[Machine] That Ali used to engage in optional prayer (witr) after the bowing (rak'ah)

أَنَّ عَلِيًّا ؓ كَانَ يَقْنُتُ فِي الْوِتْرِ بَعْدَ الرُّكُوعِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform the Witr prayer in three units, in which he would recite Surah Al-Ala (Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High), Surah Al-Kafirun (Say: O disbelievers), and Surah Al-Ikhlas (Say: He is Allah, the One). He would also engage in supplication before the Ruku' (bowing) position and say "Subhanal-Malikil-Quddus" (Glory be to the Sovereign, the Most Holy) twice, quietly the first time and aloud the second time, extending his voice with it.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُوتِرُ بِثَلَاثٍ يَقْرَأُ فِيهَا بِسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى وَقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَقُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ وَكَانَ يَقْنُتُ قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا سَلَّمَ سُبْحَانَ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ مَرَّتَيْنِ يُسِرُّ بِهِمَا وَالثَّالِثَةُ يَجْهَرُ بِهَا وَيَمُدُّ بِهَا صَوْتَهُ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform the night prayer (Tahajjud) with three (rak'ahs), reciting in the first rak'ah: "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High" (Surah Al-A'la), in the second rak'ah: "Say, O disbelievers" (Surah Al-Kafirun), and in the third rak'ah: "Say, He is Allah, the One" (Surah Al-Ikhlas). He used to prolong his recitation before bowing (ruku') and when he would finish the prayer, he would say: "Glory be to the King, the Most Holy" three times, raising his voice so that it is heard in the Hereafter, saying: "O Lord of the angels and the Rooh (Jibreel)" (Hadith Sahih Muslim).

[Machine] The Prophet of Allah, ﷺ , used to perform three voluntary units of prayer without reciting the final salutation in them until he completed the first unit by saying "Subhan Rabbi al-A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High), the second unit by saying "Qul ya ayyuha al-kafiroon" (Say, O disbelievers), and the third unit by saying "Huwa Allahu ahad" (He is Allah, the One). He would prolong the recitation before bowing down, and when he finished, he would say "Subhan al-Malik al-Quddus" (Glory be to the King, the Holy) twice, and in the third unit, he would raise his voice.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِثَلَاثِ رَكَعَاتٍ لَا يُسَلِّمُ فِيهِنَّ حَتَّى يَنْصَرِفَ الْأُولَى بِسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى وَالثَّانِيَةِ بِقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَالثَّالِثَةِ بِقُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ وَقَنَتَ قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ سُبْحَانَ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ مَرَّتَيْنِ وَرَفَعَ صَوْتَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ
