٣۔ كِتَابُ الصَّلَاةِ ص ٣٣

[Machine] "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

bayhaqi:3392Abū Bakr b. al-Ḥārith al-Faqīh > Abū Muḥammad b. Ḥibbān > Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad > Abū ʿĀmir > al-Walīd > Abū ʿAmr > Wāṣil > Mujāhid > Idhā Ṣaraft And Jhak

[Machine] Regarding the direction of the Qibla, now perform the prayer.

bayhaqi:3393Abū ʿAmr / al-Awzāʿī > Yazīd b. Abū Mālik > ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz > Idhā Ṣaraft Wajhak > al-Qiblah Faʾaʿid 3394 Wabihadhā al-Isnād > al-Walīd > Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz

[Machine] From Umar ibn Abdul Aziz and Al-Hasan, similar to that.

bayhaqi:3395al-Walīd > al-Layth b. Saʿd And ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Namir > Ibn Shihāb > al-Miswar b. Makhramah

[Machine] And the saying of Al-Maswar, it is similar to the saying of the majority in regards to someone who turns his back to the Qibla intentionally, that he begins the prayer. He said, "And it is not permissible for him to be in a state where prayer is not permissible, then he builds upon his prayer. And Allah knows best." And in the past, he used to say, "He builds." And he said in regards to the written text, "If it were not for the school of jurists, I would have seen that whoever deviates from the Qibla due to illness or otherwise, he must start over. But there is only submission in the narrations." He said that regarding this issue and other issues. And he has reverted in the recent times to the saying of Al-Maswar ibn Makhrama. And with Allah is the success.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on an errand. I (having done the business assigned to me came back and) joined him as he was going (on a ride). Qutaiba said that he was saying prayer while he rode. I greeted him. He gestured to me. When he completed the prayer. he called me and said: You greeted me just now while I was engaged in prayer. (Qutaiba said): His (Prophet's face) was towards the east, as he was praying. (Using translation from Muslim 540a)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me (on an errand) while he was going to Banu Mustaliq. I came to him and he was engaged in prayer on the back of his camel. I talked to him and he gestured to me With his hand, and Zuhair gestured with his hand. I then again talked and he again (gestured to me with his hand). Zuhair pointed with his hand towards the ground. I heard him (the Holy Prophet) reciting the Qur'an and making a sign with his head. When he com- pleted the prayer he sa'id: What have you done (with regard to that business) for which I sent you? I could not talk with you but for the fact that I was engaged in prayer. Zuhair told that Abu Zubair was sitting with his face turned towards Qibla (as he transmitted this hadith). Abu Zuhair pointed towards Banu Mustaliq with his hand and the direction to which he pointed with his hand was not towards the Ka'ba. (Using translation from Muslim 540b)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on an errand, so I went to him while he was praying. I greeted him and he responded with a gesture. Others have narrated it from Sufyan that he said in the hadith, "He did not respond to me verbally, but rather, he responded with a gesture." And with Allah is the Tawfiq (success), and these two narrations have been collected by Yazid ibn Ibrahim in his narration.

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ sent him on an errand, so he came while the Prophet ﷺ was praying and greeted him, but he did not respond to him and signaled with his hand. When he finished the prayer, he said, "It was not a hindrance for me to respond to you except that I was praying."

[Machine] "I passed by the Messenger of Allah while he was praying, so I greeted him and he returned my greeting with a sign. Layth thought he pointed with his finger, and it has been narrated in this story with a chain of transmission that he gestured with his hand without a doubt."

[Machine] Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , went to the mosque of Banu Amr ibn Awf in Quba to pray in it. The men of the Ansar came to greet him while he was praying, so I asked Suhaib, who was with him, how the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , would respond to them when they greeted him while he was praying. Suhaib said, "He would gesture to them with his hand." Sufyan said, "So I said to a man, 'Ask him if you heard this from Ibn Umar.' He said, 'O Abu Usamah, did you hear this from Ibn Umar?' He replied, 'As for me, I have spoken to him and he has spoken to me. Zaid did not say that I heard it, and it has been narrated from another perspective from Ibn Umar.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to Qubā’. The Anṣār came to greet him, and there he was praying. They began greeting him, so Ibn ʿUmar said, “O Bilāl, how did you see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ respond to them while he was praying?” He said, “Like this,” with his whole hand—meaning that he gestured—and like this.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to Quba and the Ansar heard about it, so they came to greet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I asked Bilal or Suhayb, "How did you see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ respond to them while they were greeting him and he was praying?" He said, "He gestured with his hand." And another hadith reached me, different from this one, that Suhayb, who was asked by Ibn Umar ibn Wahb, said: "The sheikh (meaning the Prophet Muhammad) praised him and Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi said: 'Both narrations are authentic and I have them.'''

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to Quba to offer prayer. Then the Ansar (the Helpers) came to him and gave him a salutation while he was engaged in prayer. I asked Bilal: How did you find the Messenger of Allah ﷺ responding to them when they gave him a salutation while he was engaged in prayer. He replied: In this way, and Ja'far ibn Awn demonstrated by spreading his palm, and keeping its inner side below and its back side above. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 927)

We used to salute during prayer and talk about our needs. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and found him praying. I saluted him, but he did not respond to me. I recalled what happened to me in the past and in the present. He then returned my salutation. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 924)

[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ he said, "There is no greeting or salaam in prayer." Ahmad ibn Hanbal said, "In my opinion, what he meant is that one should not say the salaam and then greet you. The man's hesitation in his prayer is to say the salaam while he is in doubt, as mentioned in my book." Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us that Abu Bakr ibn Dasa informed us that Abu Dawud narrated to us from Ahmad ibn Hanbal, who mentioned it with its chain of narration, except that he said, "There is no greeting or salaam in prayer." Ahmad ibn Hanbal meant that one should not say the salaam and then greet you. The man hesitates in his prayer and then leaves while he is in doubt. This wording is closer to the explanation of Ahmad ibn Hanbal. Abu Dawud said.

That Kuraib, the freed slave of Ibn ʿAbbas told him that Ibn ʿAbbas, ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Azhar and Al-Miswar bin Makhrama sent him to ʿAisha saying, "Pay her our greetings and ask her about our offering of the two-rakʿat after ʿAsr Prayer, and tell her that we have been informed that you offer these two rakʿat while we have heard that the Prophet ﷺ had forbidden their offering." Ibn ʿAbbas said, "I and ʿUmar used to beat the people for their offering them." Kuraib added, "I entered upon her and delivered their message to her.' She said, 'Ask Um Salama.' So, I informed them (of ʿAisha's answer) and they sent me to Um Salama for the same purpose as they sent me to ʿAisha. Um Salama replied, 'I heard the Prophet ﷺ forbidding the offering of these two rakʿat. Once the Prophet ﷺ offered the ʿAsr prayer, and then came to me. And at that time some Ansari women from the Tribe of Banu Haram were with me. Then (the Prophet ﷺ ) offered those two rakʿat, and I sent my (lady) servant to him, saying, 'Stand beside him and say (to him): Um Salama says, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Didn't I hear you forbidding the offering of these two rakʿat (after the ʿAsr prayer yet I see you offering them?' And if he beckons to you with his hand, then wait behind.' So the lady slave did that and the Prophet ﷺ beckoned her with his hand, and she stayed behind, and when the Prophet ﷺ finished his prayer, he said, 'O the daughter of Abu Umaiya (i.e. Um Salama), You were asking me about these two rakʿat after the ʿAsr prayer. In fact, some people from the tribe of ʿAbdul Qais came to me to embrace Islam and busied me so much that I did not offer the two rakʿat which were offered after Zuhr compulsory prayer, and these two rakʿat (you have seen me offering) make up for those." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished, the people said, 'O Messenger of Allah, you prostrated in your prayer in a manner that we have never seen you do before. Was it something that you were ordered to do or was it revealed to you?' He said, 'None of that. Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up (to pray) and we heard him say:" I seek refuge in Allah from thee." Then said:" curse thee with Allah's curse" three times, then he stretched out his hand as though he was taking hold of something. When he finished the prayer, we said: Messenger of Allah, we heard you say something during the prayer which we have not heard you say before, and we saw you stretch out your hand. He replied: Allah's enemy Iblis came with a flame of fire to put it in my face, so I said three times:" I Seek refuge in Allah from thee." Then I said three times:" I curse thee with Allah's full curse." But he did not retreat (on any one of these) three occasions. Thereafter I meant to seize him. I swear by Allah that had it not been for the supplication of my brother Sulaiman he would have been bound, and made an object of sport for the children of Medina. [Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to pray, and sometimes he would touch his beard during his prayer. It is narrated from Muammal ibn Isma'il, from Shu'bah, that he mentioned the man who was not named, and he is 'Amr ibn Hurayth. Sulayman ibn Kathir narrated it from Husayn, from 'Amr ibn 'Abdul Malik ibn Hurayth al-Makhzumi, the son of the cousin of 'Amr ibn Hurayth. He said, "The Prophet ﷺ used to do this, and it is narrated from another perspective as being weak, and it is said that there is something excessive about one of them, 3432. It is also mentioned from an-Nakha'i that he said, "It used to be said that touching the beard during prayer was either one or leave it." The Shaykh said, "And this is similar to what is narrated about touching the pebble, which is to do it once." Abu Bakr ibn al-Harith informed us that Abu ash-Shaykh informed us that Isma'il ibn 'Abdullah ad-Dabbi informed us that Ishaq ibn Musa al-Khatmi said, "I heard al-Walid ibn Muslim saying, 'I heard 'Isa ibn 'Abdullah ibn al-Hakam ibn an-Nu'man ibn Bashir reporting from Nafi' and he did not hear it from him."

[Machine] That the messenger of Allah, may peace and blessings be upon him, sometimes used to place his hand on his beard during prayer without any purpose, and it was narrated from another weak source that it is from the hadith of Abu Dhar. And it is mentioned from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i that he said it was said that touching the beard in prayer is either one act or it is preferred to leave it, and this is similar to what is narrated in touching stones, one act. Abu Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, said that most of what Isa al-Qaddah narrates is not followed upon.

Once the sun eclipsed and Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up for the prayer and recited a very long Sura and when bowed for a long while and then raised his head and started reciting another Sura. Then he bowed, and after finishing, he prostrated and did the same in the second rakʿa and then said, "These (lunar and solar eclipses) are two of the signs of Allah and if you see them, pray till the eclipse is over. No doubt, while standing at this place I saw everything promised to me by Allah and I saw (Paradise) and I wanted to pluck a bunch (of grapes) therefrom, at the time when you saw me stepping forward. No doubt, I saw Hell with its different parts destroying each other when you saw me retreating and in it I saw ʿAmr bin Luhai who started the tradition of freeing animals (set them free) in the name of idols." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1212)

We were at Al-Ahwaz fighting the Al-Haruriya (tribe). While I was at the bank of a river a man was praying and the reins of his animal were in his hands and the animal was struggling and he was following the animal. (Shuʿba, a sub-narrator, said that man was Abu Barza Al-Aslami). A man from the Khawarij said, "O Allah! Be harsh to this sheik." And when the sheik (Abu Barza) finished his prayer, he said, "I heard your remark. No doubt, I participated with Messenger of Allah ﷺ in six or seven or eight holy battles and saw his leniency, and no doubt, I would rather retain my animal than let it return to its stable, as it would cause me much trouble. A man who followed the views of the Khawarij said, "Look at this sheikh, he left his prayer and went after his animal." Abu Barza approached after he had finished his prayer and said, "I have fought in seven battles or maybe more with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and I am an elderly man. If my animal had gone to its usual place, it would have been difficult for me. So I did what you saw." We then said to the man, "I do not see Allah rewarding you for accusing a man from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ ."

[Machine] Narrated Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray in the house. Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah honor his face, came and entered. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him praying, he stood next to him and prayed. Then, a scorpion approached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until it reached him. The Prophet ﷺ left it and it went towards Ali. When Ali saw that, he struck it with his shoe, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not punish him for killing it.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: "It is enough for you to strike the snake once with a whip, whether you hit it or miss it. And if this is true, then Allah knows best about the sufficiency of it in fulfilling the duty of killing it. And Allah knows best, if it refrains from itself upon making a mistake and there is no intention to prevent it from striking more than one blow."
