[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ prohibited the act of yawning and spitting during prayer. This was specifically mentioned by Yahya ibn Ishaq as narrated from Hammad ibn Salamah. It has also been reported by Hammad and Bahir ibn Kathir from Qatadah from Anas. The first narration is considered the most authentic."  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَهَى عَنِ الْإِقْعَاءِ وَالتَّوَرُّكِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ السَّيْلَحِينِيُّ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ وَقَدْ قِيلَ عَنْهُ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ وَبَحْرِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ وَالرِّوَايَةُ الْأُولَى أَصَحُّ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to do three things and prohibited me from doing three things. He commanded me to fast three days every month, and to not sleep except on my right side. He also commanded me to pray the Duha prayer, which is two units of prayer performed after sunrise, and prohibited me from turning my neck during prayer like a fox, and from imitating the actions of a monkey, and from pecking like a rooster.  

أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِثَلَاثٍ وَنَهَانِي عَنْ ثَلَاثٍ أَمَرَنِي بِصِيَامِ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ وَأَنْ لَا أَنَامَ إِلَّا عَلَى وِتْرٍ وَرَكْعَتَيِ الضُّحَى وَنَهَانِي عَنِ الِالْتِفَاتِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ الْتِفَاتَ الثَّعْلَبِ وَأُقْعِي إِقْعَاءَ الْقِرْدِ وَأَنْقُرُ نَقْرَ الدِّيكِ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ali and mentioned a hadith in which he said, "Do not fall between the prostrations. The narration of Harith al-A'war cannot be used as evidence, and likewise the narration of Layth ibn Abi Sulaym and the narrations of Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar are authentic."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَا عَلِيُّ وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ فِيهِ وَلَا تُقْعِ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ الْحَارِثُ الْأَعْوَرُ لَا يُحْتَجُّ بِهِ وَكَذَلِكَ لَيْثُ بْنُ أَبِي سُلَيْمٍ وَحَدِيثُ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ صَحِيحٌ  

[Machine] To attach his buttocks to the ground and stand up on his legs and place his hands on the ground and said in another place, "Sitting on both buttocks, with his thighs in the same position as the sitting of a dog or a wolf." The sheikh said, "This type of sitting is not what we have narrated from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar, and this is prohibited. We have narrated from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar that it is a recommended practice. As for the narration of Abu Al-Jawza'a from Aisha from the Prophet ﷺ, that he used to forbid sitting on one's heels, and he used to stretch out his left leg and keep his right leg upright, it can be understood that this is applicable in the final tashahhud, and it does not contradict what we have narrated from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar about sitting between the two prostrations. And Allah knows best.  

أَنْ يَلْصَقَ إِلْيَتَيْهِ بِالْأَرْضِ وَيَنْتَصِبَ عَلَى سَاقَيْهِ وَيَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ بِالْأَرْضِ وَقَالَ فِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ الْإِقْعَاءُ جُلُوسُ الْإِنْسَانِ عَلَى إِلْيَتَيْهِ نَاصِبًا فَخِذَيْهِ مِثْلَ إِقْعَاءِ الْكَلْبِ وَالسَّبُعِ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَهَذَا النَّوْعُ مِنَ الْإِقْعَاءِ غَيْرُ مَا رُوِّينَا عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ وَهَذَا مَنْهِيٌّ عَنْهُ وَمَا رُوِّينَا عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ مَسْنُونٌ وَأَمَّا حَدِيثُ أَبِي الْجَوْزَاءِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَنْهَى عَنْ عَقِبِ الشَّيْطَانِ وَكَانَ يَفْرِشُ رِجْلَهُ الْيُسْرَى وَيَنْصِبُ رِجْلَهُ الْيُمْنَى فَيُحْتَمَلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ وَارِدًا فِي الْجُلُوسِ لِلتَّشَهُّدِ الْأَخِيرِ فَلَا يَكُونَ مُنَافِيًا لِمَا رُوِّينَا عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ وَفِي الْجُلُوسِ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ  

[Machine] "That I pray with you as I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying with us," Thabit said, "And Anas used to do something that I don't see you doing. When he raised his head from the bowing position, he would stand still until the person behind him said, 'He has forgotten.' And when he raised his head between the two prostrations, he would sit until the person behind him said, 'He has forgotten the phrase of the hadith of Sulaiman ibn Harb.'"  

أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ بِكُمْ كَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي بِنَا قَالَ ثَابِتٌ وَكَانَ أَنَسٌ يَصْنَعُ شَيْئًا لَا أَرَاكُمْ تَصْنَعُونَهُ كَانَ إِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ قَامَ حَتَّى يَقُولَ الْقَائِلُ قَدْ نَسِيَ وَإِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ قَعَدَ حَتَّى يَقُولَ الْقَائِلُ قَدْ نَسِيَ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ حَرْبٍ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to mention the Hadith regarding the description of his prayer. He said: "When he raised his head from bowing, he would not prostrate until he stood upright, and when he raised his head from prostration, he would not prostrate until he sat straight."  

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ فِي صِفَةِ صَلَاتِهِ وَقَالَتْ كَانَ إِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ لَمْ يَسْجُدْ حَتَّى يَسْتَوِيَ قَائِمًا وَكَانَ إِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ السُّجُودِ لَمْ يَسْجُدْ حَتَّى يَسْتَوِيَ قَاعِدًا  

[Machine] to his companions, "Shall I not show you how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray?" He then stood up and performed the prayer. He then raised his head and stood straight for a while, then he prostrated. He then raised his head and waited for a moment, then he prostrated again. Abu Qilaba said, "Our Sheikh, Amr ibn Salama, prayed in this manner." Ayyub said, "Amr used to do something that I do not see people doing. When he raised his head from the last two prostrations in the first and third units, he sat down for a moment and then stood up."  

لِأَصْحَابِهِ أَلَا أُرِيكُمْ كَيْفَ صَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَذَلِكَ فِي غَيْرِ حِينَ صَلَاةٍ فَقَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَكَبَّرَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَامَ هُنَيْئَةً ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ انْتَظَرَ هُنَيْئَةً ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو قِلَابَةَ صَلَّى صَلَاةَ شَيْخِنَا هَذَا يَعْنِي عَمْرَو بْنَ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ أَيُّوبُ وَكَانَ عَمْرٌو يَصْنَعُ شَيْئًا لَا أَرَى النَّاسَ يَصْنَعُونَهُ كَانَ إِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنْ آخِرِ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ فِي الْأُولَى وَالثَّالِثَةِ اسْتَوَى قَاعِدًا ثُمَّ يَقُومُ  

[Machine] Abu Humaid, Abu Usaid, Sahl bin Saad, and Muhammad bin Muslimah gathered together and mentioned the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Abu Humaid said, "I have the most knowledge about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." So, he mentioned it and mentioned the prostration. Then, he raised his head until every bone returned to its place.  

اجْتَمَعَ أَبُو حُمَيْدٍ وَأَبُو أُسَيْدٍ وَسَهْلُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ فَذَكَرُوا صَلَاةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو حُمَيْدٍ أَنَا أَعْلَمُكُمْ بِصَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَهَا وَذَكَرَ السُّجُودَ قَالَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ حَتَّى رَجَعَ كُلُّ عَظْمٍ فِي مَوْضِعِهِ  

"Shall I not show you how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray?" We said: "Yes." So he stood up and when he bowed, he placed his palms on his knees and put his fingers behind his knees, and held his arms out from his sides, until every part of him settled. Then he raised his head and stood up until every part of him settled. Then he prostrated and held his arms out from his sides, until every part of him settled. Then he sat up until every part of him settled. Then he prostrated again until every part of him settled. Then he did four rak'ahs like that. Then he said: "This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray, and this is how he used to lead us in prayer." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1037)   

قَالَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو أَلَا أُصَلِّي كَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي؟ فَقُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي فَلَمَّا رَكَعَ وَضَعَ رَاحَتَيْهِ عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ وَجَعَلَ أَصَابِعَهُ مِنْ وَرَاءِ رُكْبَتَيْهِ وَجَافَى إِبْطَيْهِ حَتَّى اسْتَقَرَّ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَامَ حَتَّى اسْتَقَرَّ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَجَافَى إِبْطَيْهِ حَتَّى اسْتَقَرَّ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَعَدَ حَتَّى اسْتَقَرَّ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ صَنَعَ ذَلِكَ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي وَهَكَذَا كَانَ يُصَلِّي بِنَا  

[Machine] He prayed with the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned the hadith, saying, "And he used to say between the two prostrations, 'O Lord, forgive me, O Lord, forgive me,' and he sat as long as his prostration."  

أَنَّهُ صَلَّى مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَجَلَسَ بِقَدْرِ سُجُودِهِ  

[Machine] My aunt Maymouna had a parrot. The Prophet ﷺ woke up from his sleep and mentioned the hadith about the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ. When he raised his head from prostration, he would say, "O Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, bring me together, elevate me, provide for me, and guide me. Then he prostrated. Zaid ibn Al-Hubab (may Allah be pleased with him) followed him, narrating from Kamil, and it was said from Zaid, "And cure me, without mentioning his saying, ‘Bring me together, elevate me."  

بِتُّ عِنْدَ خَالَتِي مَيْمُونَةَ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنْ نَوْمِهِ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ فِي صَلَاةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَفِيهِ وَكَانَ إِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ السَّجْدَةِ قَالَ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَاجْبُرْنِي وَارْفَعْنِي وَارْزُقْنِي وَاهْدِنِي ثُمَّ سَجَدَ تَابَعَهُ زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ عَنْ كَامِلٍ وَقِيلَ عَنْ زَيْدٍ وَعَافِنِي دُونَ قَوْلِهِ وَاجْبُرْنِي وَارْفَعْنِي  

[Machine] Ali used to say between prostrations, "O Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, elevate me, and grant me relief."  

أَنَّ عَلِيًّا ؓ كَانَ يَقُولُ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَارْفَعْنِي وَاجْبُرْنِي  

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque, a man also entered it and prayed. He then came and saluted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned the salutation and said to him: Go back and pray, for you have not prayed. The man returned and prayed as he prayed before. He then came to prophet ﷺ and saluted him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “ And upon you be peace. “ Go back and pray, for you have not prayed. He did so three times. Then the man said: By Him who has sent you(as a Prophet) with truth; I cannot do better than this; so teach me. He said: When you get up to pray, utter the takbir(Allah is most great); then recite a convenient portion of the Qur’an; then bow and remain quietly in that position; then sit and remain quietly in that position; then raise yourself and stand erect: then prostrate yourself and remain quietly in that position; then sit and remain quietly in that position; then do that throughout all your prayer. Abu Dawud said: Al-Qa’nabi reported this tradition from Sa’id b. Abi Sa’Id on the authority of Abu Hurairah. This version has the wording in the last: When you do this, then your prayer is completed. If you omit anything form this, you omit that much from your prayer. This version also has the wording: when you get up for praying, perform the abulation perfectly. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 856)   

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ فَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ فَصَلَّى ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَقَالَ ارْجِعْ فَصَلِّ فَإِنَّكَ لَمْ تُصَلِّ ثَلَاثًا قَالَ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا أُحْسِنُ غَيْرَهُ فَعَلِّمْنِي قَالَ إِذَا قُمْتَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَكَبِّرْ ثُمَّ اقْرَأْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ثُمَّ ارْكَعْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ رَاكِعًا ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ حَتَّى تَعْتَدِلَ قَائِمًا ثُمَّ اسْجُدْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ سَاجِدًا ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ جَالِسًا ثُمَّ اسْجُدْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ سَاجِدًا ثُمَّ افْعَلْ ذَلِكَ فِي صَلَاتِكَ كُلِّهَا  

[Machine] The prayer of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was when he prayed, he would perform the bowing and when he raised his head from the bowing and when he prostrated and when he raised his head from the prostration between the two prostrations, it was close to the level, all of which were narrated correctly in the Hadith of Shu'bah ibn al-Hajjaj.  

كَانَتْ صَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى فَرَكَعَ وَإِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ وَإِذَا سَجَدَ وَإِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ السُّجُودِ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ قَرِيبًا مِنَ السَّوَاءِ أَخْرَجَاهُ جَمِيعًا فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ شُعْبَةَ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ  

[Machine] The prostration, bowing, and sitting of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ between the two prostrations were close to the ground.  

كَانَ سُجُودُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَرُكُوعُهُ وَقُعُودُهُ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ قَرِيبًا مِنَ السَّوَاءِ  

I noticed the prayer of Muhammad ﷺ and saw his Qiyam (standing), his bowing, and then going back to the standing posture after bowing, his prostration, his sitting between the two prostrations, and his prostration and sitting between salutation and going away, all these were nearly equal to one another. (Using translation from Muslim 471a)   

رَمَقْتُ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَوَجَدْتُ قِيَامَهُ وَرَكْعَتَهُ وَاعْتِدَالَهُ بَعْدَ الرُّكُوعِ فَسَجْدَتَهُ فَجِلْسَتَهُ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ فَسَجْدَتَهُ فَجِلْسَتَهُ بَيْنَ التَّسْلِيمِ وَالِانْصِرَافِ قَرِيبًا مِنَ السَّوَاءِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ مُسَدَّدٍ  

[Machine] He said in his text that he performed his prostration and then sat between the two prostrations. He remained in this sitting position until the end of the prayer, close to the equal duration of the bowing. Abu Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us, who informed Abu Ahmad al-Juludi, who informed Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sufyan, who was informed by Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, who was informed by Hamed ibn Umar al-Bakrawi and Abu Kamil Fudail ibn Hussein al-Jahdari, both of them were informed by Abu Awana. Hamed said that Abu Awana mentioned it, and the mention of one of the two sitings from our narrations was omitted, and only Hamed mentioned them.  

أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي مَتْنِهِ فَرَكْعَتَهُ فَاعْتِدَالَهُ بَعْدَ رُكُوعِهِ فَسَجْدَتَهُ فَجِلْسَتَهُ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ فَسَجْدَتَهُ وَجِلْسَتَهُ مَا بَيْنَ التَّسْلِيمِ وَالِانْصِرَافِ قَرِيبًا مِنَ السَّوَاءِ 2756 أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو مُحَمَّدِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أنبأ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ الْجُلُودِيُّ أنبأ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُفْيَانَ ثنا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ ثنا حَامِدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْبَكْرَاوِيُّ وَأَبُو كَامِلٍ فُضَيْلُ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ كِلَاهُمَا عَنْ أَبِي عَوَانَةَ قَالَ حَامِدٌ ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ فَذَكَرَهُ وَكَانَ ذِكْرُ إِحْدَى الْجِلْسَتَيْنِ سَقَطَ مِنْ رِوَايَتِنَا وَإِنَّمَا ذَكَرَهُمَا حَامِدٌ  

[Machine] He saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was praying, and when he was in the last part of his prayer, he did not get up until he sat straight.  

أَنَّهُ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَإِذَا كَانَ فِي وِتْرٍ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ لَمْ يَنْهَضْ حَتَّى يَسْتَوِيَ قَاعِدًا  

[Machine] I heard Abu Humaid Al-Sa'idi talk about ten of the Prophet's companions, among them Abu Qatada. He mentioned the hadith about the description of the Prophet's prayer, in which he mentions the prostration part. Then he raises his head saying "Allah is the Greatest" and then he bends his leg and sits on it, maintaining balance until every bone returns to its place, also balanced.  

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا حُمَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ فِي عَشَرَةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِيهِمْ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ فِي صِفَةِ صَلَاةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَفِيهِ ثُمَّ يَعُودُ يَعْنِي إِلَى السُّجُودِ ثُمَّ يَرْفَعُ فَيَقُولُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ ثُمَّ يَثْنِي رِجْلَهُ فَيَقْعُدُ عَلَيْهَا مُعْتَدِلًا حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ أَوْ يَقِرَّ كُلُّ عَظْمٍ مَوْضِعَهُ مُعْتَدِلًا  

Abu Qilaba said, "Malik bin Huwairith came to us and led us in the prayer in this mosque of ours and said, 'I lead you in prayer but I do not want to offer the prayer but just to show you how Allah's Apostle performed his prayers." I asked Abu Qilaba, "How was the prayer of Malik bin Huwairith?" He replied, "Like the prayer of this Sheikh of ours-- i.e. ʿAmr bin Salima." That Sheikh used to pronounce the Takbir perfectly and when he raised his head from the second prostration he would sit for a while and then support himself on the ground and get up. أَنْ أُرِيَكُمْ كَيْفَ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي قَالَ أَيُّوبُ فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي قِلَابَةَ كَيْفَ كَانَتْ يَعْنِي صَلَاتَهُ؟ قَالَ مِثْلَ صَلَاةِ شَيْخِنَا هَذَا يَعْنِي عَمْرَو بْنَ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ أَيُّوبُ وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ الشَّيْخُ يُتِمُّ التَّكْبِيرَ وَكَانَ إِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ السَّجْدَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ جَلَسَ ثُمَّ اعْتَمَدَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ  

[Machine] "To teach you as I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray," he said. He mentioned that when he raised his head from prostration, meaning in the first unit of prayer, he sat down, then stood and relied on the ground. 2761 Abu Zakariya ibn Abi Ishaq al-Muzakki informed us, Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub informed us, al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman informed us, al-Shafi'i informed us, from Abdul Wahab, from Khalid al-Hadda, from Abu Qilabah in a similar manner, except that he said, "Malik used to sit down when he raised his head from the last prostration in the first unit of prayer, then stood and relied on the ground."  

أَنْ أُعَلِّمَكُمْ كَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي قَالَ فَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ حَيْثُ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ السَّجْدَةِ يَعْنِي فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُولَى اسْتَوَى قَاعِدًا ثُمَّ قَامَ وَاعْتَمَدَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ 2761 أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الْمُزَكِّي ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ أنبأ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ أنبأ الشَّافِعِيُّ أنبأ عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّاءِ عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ بِنَحْوِهِ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ وَكَانَ مَالِكٌ إِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ السَّجْدَةِ الْأَخِيرَةِ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُولَى سْتَوَى قَاعِدًا قَامَ وَاعْتَمَدَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ  

[Machine] Indeed, it is not a tradition of prayer, but rather I do it because I complain.  

إِنَّهَا لَيْسَتْ بِسُنَّةِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِنَّمَا أَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنِّي أَشْتَكِي  

[Machine] He went down into prostration, then when he rose from the final prostration, he stood up as he usually does. When he finished, I mentioned that to him, so he said, "Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid informed me that he saw Abdullah bin Mas'ood standing on the soles of his feet during prayer." Al-A'mash said, "So I narrated this Hadith to Ibrahim an-Nakha'i, and he said, 'Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid informed me that he saw Abdullah bin Mas'ood doing that.'" So I narrated it to Khaythamah bin Abdur-Rahman, and he said, "I saw Ibn Umar standing on the soles of his feet." So I narrated it to Muhammad bin Abdullah ath-Thaqafi, and he said, "I saw Abdul-Rahman bin Abi Layla standing on the soles of his feet." So I narrated it to Atiyyah al-Awfi, and he said, "I saw Ibn Umar, Ibn Abbas, Ibn az-Zubayr, and Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri standing on the soles of their feet during prayer."  

رَكَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَلَمَّا قَامَ مِنَ السَّجْدَةِ الْأَخِيرَةِ قَامَ كَمَا هُوَ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ ذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ أَنَّهُ رَأَى عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَقُومُ عَلَى صُدُورِ قَدَمَيْهِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ الْأَعْمَشُ فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ النَّخَعِيَّ فَقَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ أَنَّهُ رَأَى عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهِ خَيْثَمَةَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ فَقَالَ رَأَيْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُومُ عَلَى صُدُورِ قَدَمَيْهِ فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهِ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ الثَّقَفِيَّ فَقَالَ رَأَيْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى يَقُومُ عَلَى صُدُورِ قَدَمَيْهِ فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهِ عَطِيَّةَ الْعَوْفِيَّ فَقَالَ رَأَيْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ وَابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ وَابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ وَأَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ ؓ يَقُومُونَ عَلَى صُدُورِ أَقْدَامِهِمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ  

[Machine] It is not part of the Sunnah of prayer, but he did it in order to complain, and the gift of Awfiyah cannot be used as evidence.  

أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ سُنَّةِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِنَّمَا فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنَّهُ يَشْتَكِي وَعَطِيَّةُ الْعَوْفِيُّ لَا يُحْتَجُّ بِهِ  

[Machine] A man entered the mosque and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in a corner of the mosque. The man performed his prayers and then came to greet him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Peace be upon you. Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." So the man returned and prayed. Then he came to greet him again and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the same thing to him. In the third time, the man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to teach him. He said, "When you stand up for prayer, perform the ablution thoroughly, face the qiblah, and say the takbir. Then recite whatever is easy for you from the Quran. Then bow until you are at ease in the bowing position, then raise your head until you are in a balanced standing position. Then prostrate until you are at ease in the prostration position, then raise yourself until you are at ease in the sitting position. Then prostrate until you are at ease in the prostration position again, then sit until you are at ease in the sitting position. Then do the same in every unit of prayer and prostration." Abu Usamah confirmed this and said, "Yes, that is what Ishaaq ibn Ibrahim al-Hanzhali reported from Abu Usamah. Another narration from Abu Usamah and another from Ibn Numayr also confirmed this."  

دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ الْمَسْجِدَ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ جَالِسٌ فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَصَلَّى ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ وَعَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ ارْجِعْ فَصَلِّ فَإِنَّكَ لَمْ تُصَلِّ فَرَجَعَ فَصَلَّى ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ فَعَلِّمْنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ إِذَا قُمْتَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَأَسْبِغِ الْوُضُوءَ وَاسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ وَكَبِّرْ ثُمَّ اقْرَأْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ثُمَّ ارْكَعْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ رَاكِعًا ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ حَتَّى تَعْتَدِلَ قَائِمًا ثُمَّ اسْجُدْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ سَاجِدًا ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ قَاعِدًا ثُمَّ اسْجُدْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ سَاجِدًا ثُمَّ اقْعُدْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ قَاعِدًا ثُمَّ افْعَلْ كَذَلِكَ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ وَسَجْدَةٍ فَأَقَرَّ بِهِ أَبُو أُسَامَةَ وَقَالَ نَعَمْ كَذَا قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ وَرِوَايَتُهُ كَذَلِكَ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ عَنْ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ وَمِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ عَنِ ابْنِ نُمَيْرٍ  

[Machine] About Abu Usamah, then prostrate until you are calm in prostration, then raise your head until you are sitting in a calm state, then prostrate until you are calm in prostration, then raise your head until you are standing straight, then do this in all of your prayers. Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, through Muhammad ibn Salih ibn Hanei, through Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad, through Ubaidullah ibn Saeed, through Abu Usamah 2767. Abu Abdullah said, and Abu Ahmad Al-Hafiz informed me, through Muhammad ibn Ishaq Al-Thaqafi, through Yusuf ibn Musa, through Abu Usamah Hammad ibn Usamah, through Ubaidullah ibn Umar, who mentioned it in this way, and he said in the end, then raise your head until you are standing straight.  

عَنْ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ ثُمَّ اسْجُدْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ سَاجِدًا ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ حَتَّى تَسْتَوِيَ وَتَطْمَئِنَّ جَالِسًا ثُمَّ اسْجُدْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ سَاجِدًا ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ حَتَّى تَسْتَوِيَ قَائِمًا ثُمَّ افْعَلْ ذَلِكَ فِي صَلَاتِكَ كُلِّهَا أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ صَالِحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ثنا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ 2767 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو أَحْمَدَ الْحَافِظُ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الثَّقَفِيُّ ثنا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ حَمَّادُ بْنُ أُسَامَةَ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ فَذَكَرَهُ بِنَحْوِهِ وَقَالَ فِي آخِرِهِ ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ حَتَّى تَسْتَوِيَ قَائِمًا  

Whenever Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood for the prayer, he said Takbir on starting the prayer and then on bowing. On rising from bowing he said, "Samiʿa llahu liman hamidah," and then while standing straight he used to say, "Rabbana laka-l hamd" (Al- Laith said, "(The Prophet ﷺ said), 'Wa laka l-hamd'." He used to say Takbir on prostrating and on raising his head from prostration; again he would Say Takbir on prostrating and raising his head. He would then do the same in the whole of the prayer till it was completed. On rising from the second rakʿa (after sitting for at-Tahiyyat), he used to say Takbir. أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَامَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ يُكَبِّرُ حِينَ يَقُومُ ثُمَّ يُكَبِّرُ حِينَ يَرْكَعُ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ حِينَ يَرْفَعُ صُلْبَهُ مِنَ الرَّكْعَةِ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ ثُمَّ يُكَبِّرُ حِينَ يَهْوِي سَاجِدًا ثُمَّ يُكَبِّرُ حِينَ يَرْفَعُ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ يُكَبِّرُ حِينَ يَسْجُدُ ثُمَّ يُكَبِّرُ حِينَ يَرْفَعُ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ كُلِّهَا حَتَّى يَقْضِيَهَا وَيُكَبِّرُ حِينَ يَقُومُ مِنَ الثِّنْتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْجُلُوسِ  

Salim al-Barrad said: We came to AbuMas'ud Uqbah ibn Amr al-Ansari and said to him: Tell us about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He stood up before us in the mosque and said the takbir. When he bowed, he placed his hands upon his knees and put his fingers below, and kept his elbows (arms) away from his sides, so everything returned properly to its place. Then he said: "Allah listens to him who praises Him"; then he stood up so that everything returned properly to its place; then he said the takbir and prostrated and put the palms of his hands on the ground; he kept his elbow (arms) away from his sides, so that everything returned to its proper place. Then he raised his head and sat so that everything returned to its place; he then repeated it in a similar way. Then he offered four rak'ahs of prayer like this rak'ah and completed his prayer. Then he said: Thus we witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offering his prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 863)   

حَدِّثْنَا عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَامَ بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا فِي مَسْجِدٍ فَكَبَّرَ فَلَمَّا رَكَعَ وَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ وَجَعَلَ أَصَابِعَهُ أَسْفَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَجَافَى بَيْنَ مِرْفَقَيْهِ حَتَّى اسْتَقَرَّ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ فَقَامَ حَتَّى اسْتَقَرَّ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ وَسَجَدَ فَوَضَعَ كَفَّيْهِ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ جَافَى بِمِرْفَقَيْهِ عَنْ جَنْبَيْهِ حَتَّى اسْتَقَرَّ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَجَلَسَ حَتَّى اسْتَقَرَّ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِنْهُ فَفَعَلَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ أَيْضًا ثُمَّ صَلَّى أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ مِثْلَ هَذِهِ الرَّكْعَةِ يُصَلِّي صَلَاتَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا رَأَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي  

[Machine] He was sitting with a group of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "We mentioned the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Abu Humaid Al-Sa'idi said, "I used to memorize the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I saw that when he said the takbeer, he would place his hands parallel to his shoulders. And when he bowed, he would put his hands on his knees. Then he would straighten his back when he raised his head until every bone returned to its place. And when he prostrated, he would place his hands on the ground without spreading or clasping them. And he would face the tips of his fingers with the ends of his toes. And when he sat between the two prostrations, he would front his left foot and sit on his left foot. And when he sat in the last sitting, he would put forward his left foot and sit on his buttocks."  

أَنَّهُ كَانَ جَالِسًا مَعَ نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ فَذَكَرْنَا صَلَاةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَبُو حُمَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيُّ أَنَا كُنْتُ أَحْفَظَكُمْ لِصَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ رَأَيْتُهُ إِذَا كَبَّرَ جَعَلَ يَدَيْهِ حَذْوَ مَنْكِبَيْهِ وَإِذَا رَكَعَ أَمْكَنَ يَدَيْهِ مِنْ رُكْبَتَيْهِ ثُمَّ هَصَرَ ظَهْرَهُ فَإِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ اسْتَوَى حَتَّى يَعُودَ كُلُّ فَقَارٍ مَكَانَهُ وَإِذَا سَجَدَ وَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ غَيْرَ مُفْتَرِشٍ وَلَا قَابِضِهِمَا وَاسْتَقْبَلَ بِأَطْرَافِ أَصَابِعِ رِجْلَيْهِ وَإِذَا جَلَسَ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَدَّمَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ عَلَى رِجْلِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَإِذَا جَلَسَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْآخِرَةِ قَدَّمَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُسْرَى وَجَلَسَ عَلَى مَقْعَدَتِهِ  

[Machine] In its text, when he sits in the first two positions, he sits on his left foot and raises his right foot. And when he sits in the last position, he sits on his heel and places the belly of his left foot against the thigh of his right leg, and raises his right foot. Abu Amr Al-Adibi informed us, Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili informed us, Al-Qasim ibn Zakariya narrated to us, Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Shababa narrated to us, Lait ibn Sa'd mentioned him, except that he excluded Ibn Halhala from his chain of narrators.  

فِي مَتْنِهِ فَإِذَا جَلَسَ فِي الْأُولَيَيْنِ جَلَسَ عَلَى قَدَمِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَنَصَبَ قَدَمَهُ الْيُمْنَى وَإِذَا جَلَسَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ جَلَسَ عَلَى إِلْيَتِهِ وَجَعَلَ بَطْنَ قَدَمَيْهِ الْيُسْرَى عِنْدَ مَأْبِضِ فَخِذِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَنَصَبَ قَدَمَهُ الْيُمْنَى أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْأَدِيبُ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ أنبأ الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ثنا شَبَابَةُ ثنا لَيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ فَذَكَرَهُ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ أَسْقَطَ مِنْ إِسْنَادِهِ ابْنَ حَلْحَلَةَ  

I was sitting in the company( of the Companions). He then narrated this tradition saying: When he(the Prophet) sat up after two rak’ahs, he sat on the sole of his left foot and raised his left foot. When he sat up after four rak’ahs, he placed his left hip on the ground and put out his both feet on one side. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 965)   

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَعَدَ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَعَدَ عَلَى بَطْنِ قَدَمِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَنَصَبَ الْيُمْنَى فَإِذَا كَانَتِ الرَّابِعَةُ أَفْضَى بِوَرِكِهِ الْيُسْرَى إِلَى الْأَرْضِ وَأَخْرَجَ قَدَمَيْهِ مِنْ نَاحِيَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ  

"Abu Humaid, Abu Usaid, Sahl bin Sa'd, and Muhammad bin Maslamah were once together and they were mentioning the Salat of Messenger of Allah. Abu Humaid said: "I am the most knowledgeable among you of the Salat of Messenger of Allah: Indeed Messenger of Allah sat - meaning for Tashah-hud - he spread his left foot, and made the top of his right (foot) face the Qiblah, and he placed his right hand on his right knee, and his left hand on his left knee, and indicated with his finger - meaning the index finge.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 293)   

اجْتَمَعَ أَبُو حُمَيْدٍ وَأَبُو أُسَيْدٍ وَسَهْلُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ فَذَكَرُوا صَلَاةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو حُمَيْدٍ أَنَا أَعْلَمُكُمْ بِصَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ فِيهِ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَافْتَرَشَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُسْرَى وَأَقْبَلَ بِصَدْرِ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى قِبْلَتِهِ وَوَضَعَ كَفَّهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَكَفَّهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَأَشَارَ بِإِصْبَعِهِ وَهَذَا فِي التَّشَهُّدِ الْأَوَّلِ وَلَيْسَ فِي حَدِيثِهِ ذِكْرُ التَّشَهُّدِ الْأَخِيرِ  

[Machine] I heard Abu Humaid Al-Sa'idi speaking about ten companions of the Prophet ﷺ among them Abu Qatada. Abu Humaid said, "I know the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ very well," and then he mentioned the hadith in detail until he reached the part where, during the prostration, the one who offers the prayer extends his left leg and sits on his left hip. They all said, "Yes, this is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray," and this narration specifically refers to the final Tashahhud, but it does not mention the sitting posture in the first Tashahhud. Both Ibn Halhala and Muhammad bin Amr have preserved this narration. With the help of Allah, and as for the hadith of Abu Al-Jawzah from Aisha regarding the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he used to say the greetings in both units of prayer and he used to extend his left leg and keep his right leg upright. He used to discourage placing one foot over the other, and the hadith of Wail bin Hujr in the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ where he sat and extended his left leg, one of them is mentioned in the final Tashahhud and the other is mentioned in the first Tashahhud, relying on the Hadith of Abu Humaid Al-Sa'idi and his companions.  

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا حُمَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ فِي عَشَرَةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِيهِمْ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ قَالَ أَبُو حُمَيْدٍ أَنَا أَعْلَمُكُمْ بِصَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ وَفِيهِ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ فِي السَّجْدَةِ الَّتِي فِيهَا التَّسْلِيمُ أَخَّرَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُسْرَى فَقَعَدَ مُتَوَرِّكًا عَلَى شِقِّهِ الْأَيْسَرِ فَقَالُوا جَمِيعًا صَدَقَ هَكَذَا كَانَ يُصَلِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهَذَا فِي التَّشَهُّدِ الْأَخِيرِ نَصًّا وَلَيْسَ فِي هَذِهِ الرِّوَايَةِ كَيْفِيَّةُ الْجُلُوسِ فِي التَّشَهُّدِ الْأَوَّلِ وَقَدْ حَفِظِهُمَا جَمِيعًا ابْنُ حَلْحَلَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَلَى مَا مَضَى وَبِاللهِ التَّوْفِيقُ وَأَمَّا حَدِيثُ أَبِي الْجَوْزَاءِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ فِي صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ التَّحِيَّةَ وَكَانَ يَفْرِشُ رِجْلَهُ الْيُسْرَى وَيَنْصِبُ رِجْلَهُ الْيُمْنَى وَكَانَ يَنْهَى عَنْ عَقِبِ الشَّيْطَانِ وَحَدِيثُ وَائِلِ بْنِ حُجْرٍ فِي صَلَاةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَافْتَرَشَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُسْرَى فَأَحَدُهُمَا وَارِدٌ فِي التَّشَهُّدِ الْآخِرِ وَالثَّانِي وَارِادٌ فِي التَّشَهُّدِ الْأَوَّلِ بِالِاسْتِدْلَالِ بِحَدِيثِ أَبِي حُمَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ وَأَصْحَابِهِ  

I saw ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar crossing his legs while sitting in the prayer and I, a mere youngster in those days, did the same. Ibn ʿUmar forbade me to do so, and said, "The proper way is to keep the right foot propped up and bend the left in the prayer." I said questioningly, "But you are doing so (crossing the legs)." He said, "My feet cannot bear my weight." (Using translation from Bukhārī 827)   

أَنْ تَنْصِبَ رِجْلَكَ الْيُمْنَى وَتَثْنِيَ الْيُسْرَى فَقُلْتُ إِنَّكَ تَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رِجْلِيَّ لَا تَحْمِلَانِي  

"I heard Al-Qasim saying: "Abdullah bin 'Abdullah informed me that he heard 'Abdullah bin 'Umar saying: "From the Sunnah of the prayer is to lay your left foot on the ground, and raise your right foot." (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 959)   

أَنْ تُضْجِعَ رِجْلَكَ الْيُسْرَى وَتَنْصُبَ الْيُمْنَى  

[Machine] He informed me that his father used to do that.  

وَحَدَّثَنِي أَنَّ أَبَاهُ كَانَ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ  

‘Abd Allah b. ‘Umar saw me playing with pebbles during prayer. When he finished his prayer, he forbade me (to do so) and said: Do as the Apostle ﷺ used to do. I asked him: How would the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do? He said: When he sat during the prayer (for reciting the tashahhud), he placed his right hand on his right thigh, and clenched all his fingers, and pointed with the finger which is adjacent to the thumb, and he placed his left hand on his left thigh. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 987)   

وَقَالَ اصْنَعْ كَمَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَصْنَعُ قُلْتُ وَكَيْفَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَصْنَعُ؟ قَالَ كَانَ إِذَا جَلَسَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَضَعَ كَفَّهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَقَبَضَ بِأَصَابِعِهِ كُلِّهَا وَأَشَارَ بِإِصْبَعِهِ الَّتِي تَلِي الْإِبْهَامَ وَوَضَعَ كَفَّهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُسْرَى لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ الشَّافِعِيِّ  

Ibn 'Umar reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat for tashahhud he placed his left hand on his left knee. and his right hand on his right knee. and he raised his right finger, which is next to the thumb, making supplication in this way, and he stretched his left hand on his left knee. (Using translation from Muslim 580a)   

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا جَلَسَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ وَرَفَعَ أُصْبُعَهُ الْيُمْنَى الَّتِي تَلِي الْإِبْهَامَ فَدَعَا بِهَا وَيَدُهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ بَاسِطَهَا عَلَيْهَا  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to sit and make the tashahhud. He would place his right hand on his right thigh and his left hand on his left thigh, and he would clench his fingers together and make supplication.  

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَعَدَ يَتَشَهَّدُ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَيَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَعَقَدَ ثَلَاثًا وَخَمْسِينَ يَدْعُو  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to place his left foot between his thigh and his calf when he sat in prayer, and he would spread out his right foot, placing his left hand on his left knee, and his right hand on his right knee. He would point with his finger to indicate the words of the narration of Abu Abdullah and in the narration of Ibn Abadan, he would place his right hand on his right knee and point with one finger.  

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَعَدَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ جَعَلَ قَدَمَهُ الْيُسْرَى بَيْنَ فَخِذِهِ وَسَاقِهُ وَفَرَشَ قَدَمَهُ الْيُمْنَى وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَأَشَارَ بِأُصْبُعِهِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ وَفِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عَبْدَانَ وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَأَشَارَ بِأُصْبُعٍ وَاحِدَةٍ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to place his right hand on his right thigh, and his left hand on his left thigh. He would point with his index finger and place his thumb on his middle finger. He would also place his left palm on his left knee. This is narrated in the hadith of Abu Khalid Al-Ahmar, and in the narration of Layth ibn Saad it is mentioned that he would place his hand on his knee and point with his index finger.  

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَعَدَ يَدْعُو وَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَيَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَأَشَارَ بِإِصْبَعِهِ السَّبَّابَةِ وَوَضَعَ إِبْهَامَهُ عَلَى أُصْبُعِهِ الْوُسْطَى وَيُلْقِمُ كَفَّهُ الْيُسْرَى رُكْبَتَهُ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ الْأَحْمَرِ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ كَانَ إِذَا قَعَدَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ وَأَشَارَ بِإِصْبَعِهِ  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ stood up for prayer. He raised his hands until they were level with his ears, and he held his left hand with his right. When he was about to bow, he raised his hands. When he raised his head from the bowing position, he raised his hands again. When he prostrated, he placed his hands on the ground. He prostrated between them. Then he sat down and placed his left hand on his left thigh and his right elbow on his right thigh. He clasped his middle finger with his thumb and pointed with his index finger, indicating something.  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَامَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَكَبَّرَ وَرَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ حَتَّى حَاذَى بِهِمَا أُذُنَيْهِ وَأَخَذَ شِمَالَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَرْكَعَ رَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ فَلَمَّا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ رَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ فَلَمَّا سَجَدَ وَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ فَسَجَدَ بَيْنَهُمَا ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَوَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَمِرْفَقَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُمْنَى ثُمَّ عَقَدَ الْخِنْصَرَ وَالْبِنْصَرَ ثُمَّ حَلَّقَ الْوُسْطَى بِالْإِبْهَامِ وَأَشَارَ بِالسَّبَابَةِ وَبِمَعْنَاهُ  

I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him placing his right hand on his right thigh and raising his forefinger curving it a little. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 991)   

أَنَّهُ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَاعِدًا فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَاضِعًا ذِرَاعَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُمْنَى رَافِعًا إِصْبَعَهُ السَّبَابَةَ قَدْ أَحْنَاهَا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ يَدْعُو  

The Prophet ﷺ used to point with his finger (at the end of the tashahhud) and he would not move it. Ibn Juraij said: "And 'Amr bin Dinar added: 'He (Ziyad) said: "'Amir informed me from his father that he saw the Prophet ﷺ supplicating like that. And the Prophet ﷺ would brace himself with his left hand on his left knee. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 989)   

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يُشِيرُ بِأُصْبُعِهِ إِذَا دَعَا لَا يُحَرِّكُهَا قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ وَرَأَيْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ دِينَارٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَامِرٌ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ رَأَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَدْعُو كَذَلِكَ يَتَحَامَلُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِيَدِهِ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى رِجْلِهِ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ وَكَذَلِكَ  

[Machine] He informed him saying, I said: "I want to observe the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." So he mentioned the narration and said in it, then he sat down and stretched out his left leg and placed his left hand on his left thigh and knee, and placed the edge of his right elbow on his right thigh. Then he clenched three of his fingers and made a circle, and then raised his index finger. I saw him moving it, using it as a means of supplication. It is possible that the intention of the movement is a gesture, not a repetition of the movement. This would be in accordance with the narration of Ibn Zubair. And Allah knows best.  

أَخْبَرَهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَأَنْظُرَنَّ إِلَى صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ وَقَالَ فِيهِ ثُمَّ قَعَدَ فَافْتَرَشَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُسْرَى وَوَضَعَ كَفَّهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ وَرُكْبَتِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَجَعَلَ حَدَّ مِرْفَقِهِ الْأَيْمَنِ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُمْنَى ثُمَّ قَبَضَ ثَلَاثَةً مِنْ أَصَابِعِهِ وَحَلَّقَ حَلْقَةً ثُمَّ رَفَعَ إِصْبَعَهُ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يُحَرِّكُهَا يَدْعُو بِهَا فَيُحْتَمَلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ الْمُرَادُ بِالتَّحْرِيكِ الْإِشَارَةَ بِهَا لَا تَكْرِيرَ تَحْرِيكِهَا فَيَكُونَ مُوَافِقًا لِرِوَايَةِ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ وَاللهُ تَعَالَى أَعْلَمُ  

[Machine] Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ said that moving the finger during prayer is a cause of fear for the devil. Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi did this uniquely, although it is not confirmed to be authentic. And it is narrated from Mujahid that he said moving one's finger during sitting in prayer suppresses the devil.  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ تَحْرِيكُ الْأُصْبُعِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ مَذْعَرَةٌ لِلشَّيْطَانِ تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْوَاقِدِيُّ وَلَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيِّ وَرُوِّينَا عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ تَحْرِيكُ الرَّجُلِ أُصْبُعَهُ فِي الْجُلُوسِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ مُقْمِعَةٌ لِلشَّيْطَانِ  

He saw a man moving pebbles with his hand while praying. When he finished, 'Abdullah said to him: "Do not move the pebbles while you are praying, for that is from Shaitan. Rather do what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do." He said: "What did he used to do?" He said: "He would put his right hand on his right thigh, and point with the finger that is next to the thumb toward the Qiblah, and he would look at it, or thereabouts." Then he said: "This is what I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1160)   

أَنَّهُ رَأَى رَجُلًا يُحَرِّكُ الْحَصَا بِيَدِهِ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ لَا تُحَرِّكِ الْحَصَا وَأَنْتَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ؛ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَلَكِنِ اصْنَعْ كَمَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَصْنَعُ قَالَ وَكَيْفَ؟ قَالَ فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ وَأَشَارَ بِأُصْبُعِهِ الَّتِي تَلِي الْإِبْهَامَ فِي الْقِبْلَةِ وَرَمَى بِبَصَرِهِ إِلَيْهَا أَوْ نَحْوَهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَصْنَعُ  

[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ used to place his left hand on his left thigh, and his right hand on his right thigh, and he would point with his index finger without moving it beyond the level of his gaze."  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا جَلَسَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَضَعَ كَفَّهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَكَفَّهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَأَشَارَ بِأُصْبُعِهِ السَّبَابَةِ لَا يُجَاوِزُ بَصَرُهُ إِشَارَتَهُ  

His father said: "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat in the second or fourth rak'ah, he would place his hands on his knees and point with his finger." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1161)   

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا جَلَسَ فِي ثِنْتَيْنِ أَوْ فِي أَرْبَعٍ وَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَشَارَ بِأُصْبُعِهِ  

[Machine] You have hit the mark. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ indicate with his finger when he sat for the tashahhud in his prayer. The polytheists used to say that he was casting a spell on them and that the Prophet ﷺ only intended to establish monotheism.  

قَدْ أَصَبْتَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُشِيرُ بِأُصْبُعِهِ إِذَا جَلَسَ يَتَشَهَّدُ فِي صَلَاتِهِ وَكَانَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّمَا يَسْحَرُنَا وَإِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ التَّوْحِيدَ
