[Machine] They used to come for prayer and the Prophet ﷺ had already preceded them in some prayers, so they would gesture to them how many units of prayer he had performed with his fingers, one or two. Then Mu'adh came and the Prophet ﷺ had already preceded him in some prayers, so he entered the prayer and said, "I do not find him on a certain condition except that I am upon it." Then he completed [the prayer]. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had already preceded him in some prayers, so he entered the prayer. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished the prayer, Mu'adh stood up to complete it. Upon seeing this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Mu'adh will lead you like this, so do the same."

كَانُوا يَأْتُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَقَدْ سَبَقَهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِبَعْضِ الصَّلَاةِ فَيُشِيرُونَ إِلَيْهِمْ كَمْ صَلَّى بِالْأَصَابِعِ وَاحِدَةً ثِنْتَيْنِ فَجَاءَ مُعَاذٌ وَقَدْ سَبَقَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِبَعْضِ الصَّلَاةِ فَدَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ لَا أَجِدُهُ عَلَى حَالٍ إِلَّا كُنْتُ عَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ قَضَيْتُ فَجَاءَ وَقَدْ سَبَقَهُ بِبَعْضِ الصَّلَاةِ فَدَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلَمَّا قَضَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الصَّلَاةَ قَامَ مُعَاذٌ يَقْضِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ سَنَّ لَكُمْ مُعَاذٌ هَكَذَا فَافْعَلُوا

[Machine] The man used to inform others about his previous prayers when he came to pray. And indeed, they stood with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was standing, bowing, sitting, and prostrating. And they prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Muadh then came, and they gestured to him. Shu'bah said, "I heard this from Husayn, meaning from Ibn Abi Layla." Muadh said, "I do not see any condition except that I was upon it." He said, "Muadh has prescribed a sunnah for you, so do as he did." And Ghandar narrated it from Shu'bah until his saying, "And Amr ibn Murrah said, and Husayn narrated it from Ibn Abi Layla until Muadh came." Shu'bah said, "And I heard it from Husayn, and I do not see any condition except until his saying, 'So do as he did.' Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us, Abu Bakr ibn Dasa narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, Ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Jafar narrated to us from Shu'bah, and he mentioned it."

كَانَ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا جَاءَ يُصَلِّي فَيُخْبَرُ بِمَا سُبِقَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ وَإِنَّهُمْ قَامُوا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ بَيْنِ قَائِمٍ وَرَاكِعٍ وَقَاعِدٍ وَمُصَلٍّ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَجَاءَ مُعَاذٌ فَأَشَارُوا إِلَيْهِ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَهَذِهِ سَمِعْتُهَا مِنْ حُصَيْنٍ يَعْنِي عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى قَالَ فَقَالَ مُعَاذٌ لَا أَرَاهُ عَلَى حَالٍ إِلَّا كُنْتُ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ مُعَاذًا قَدْ سَنَّ لَكُمْ سُنَّةً كَذَلِكَ فَافْعَلُوا 5148 وَرَوَاهُ غُنْدَرٌ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ قَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ وَحَدَّثَنِي بِهَا حُصَيْنٌ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى حَتَّى جَاءَ مُعَاذٌ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُهَا مِنْ حُصَيْنٍ فَقَالَ لَا أَرَاهُ عَلَى حَالٍ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ كَذَلِكَ فَافْعَلُوا أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ دَاسَةَ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ فَذَكَرَهُ

When the Prophet, became ill in his fatal illness, Someone came to inform him about the prayer, and the Prophet ﷺ told him to tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in the prayer. I said, "Abu Bakr is a softhearted man and if he stands for the prayer in your place, he would weep and would not be able to recite the Qur'an." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the prayer." I said the same as before. He (repeated the same order and) on the third or the fourth time he said, "You are the companions of Joseph. Tell Abu Bakr to lead the prayer." So Abu Bakr led the prayer and meanwhile the Prophet ﷺ felt better and came out with the help of two men; as if I see him just now dragging his feet on the ground. When Abu Bakr saw him, he tried to retreat but the Prophet ﷺ beckoned him to carry on. Abu Bakr retreated a bit and the Prophet ﷺ sat on his (left) side. Abu Bakr was repeating the Takbir (Allahu Akbar) of Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the people to hear. (Using translation from Bukhārī 712)

لَمَّا مَرِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَضَهُ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ أَتَاهُ بِلَالٌ يُؤْذِنُهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَيُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَجُلٌ أَسِيفٌ وَإِنَّهُ إِنْ يَقُمْ مَقَامَكَ يَبْكِ فَلَا يَقْدِرُ عَلَى الْقِرَاءَةِ فَقَالَ مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ أَوْ فِي الرَّابِعَةِ إِنَّكُنَّ صَوَاحِبُ يُوسُفَ مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَيُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ وَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُهَادَى بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ يَخُطُّ بِرِجْلَيْهِ الْأَرْضَ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ذَهَبَ يَتَأَخَّرُ فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ صَلِّ فَقَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَقَعَدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ يُصَلِّي وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ يُسْمِعُ النَّاسَ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered into prayer, then he motioned to them (his companions) to stay in their places. He went into his house and then came out with his head dripping water. He entered into prayer and prayed with them. When he finished the prayer, he said, "Indeed, I am only a human being, and I had a state of impurity."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ أَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَنْ مَكَانَكُمْ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ بَيْتَهُ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ وَرَأْسُهُ يَقْطُرُ فَدَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ وَإِنِّي كُنْتُ جُنُبًا

I accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a journey and we reached a watering place. He said: Jabir, are you going to enter it? I said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then got down and I entered it. He (the Holy Prophet) then went away to relieve himself and I placed for him water for ablution. He then came back and performed ablution, and then stood and prayed in one garment, having its ends tied from the opposite sides. I stood behind him and he caught hold of my ear and made me stand on his right side. (Using translation from Muslim 766)

كُنْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ فَانْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى مَشْرَعَةٍ فَقَالَ أَلَا تُشْرِعُ يَا جَابِرُ؟ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ فَنَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَشْرَعْتُ قَالَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِحَاجَتِهِ وَوَضَعْتُ لَهُ وُضُوءًا فَجَاءَ فَتَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ قَامَ يُصَلِّي فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ خَالَفَ بَيْنَ طَرَفَيْهِ فَقُمْتُ خَلْفَهُ فَأَخَذَ بِأُذُنِي فَجَعَلَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ

[Machine] Then the Prophet ﷺ stood up to pray at night. He said, "So I stood to his left to pray with him." He said, "Then he took hold of my shoulder or my head and made me stand to his right."

فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ أُصَلِّي بِصَلَاتِهِ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ بِذُؤَابٍ كَانَ لِي أَوْ بِرَأْسِي فَأَقَامَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ

[Machine] I accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a battle, and he stood up to pray. Then I came until I stood on the left side of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he held my hand and turned me around until he stood me on his right side. Then Ibn Sakhr came until he stood on his left side, and he held both of our hands until he made us stand behind him.

سِرْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةٍ فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ ثُمَّ جِئْتُ حَتَّى قُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِي فَأَدَارَنِي حَتَّى أَقَامَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَجَاءَ ابْنُ صَخْرٍ حَتَّى قَامَ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَأَخَذَنَا بِيَدَيْهِ جَمِيعًا حَتَّى أَقَامَنَا خَلْفَهُ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led him and one of their women in prayer. He (the prophet) put him on his right side and the woman behind him (Anas) (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 609)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَمَّهُ وَامْرَأَةً مِنْهُمْ فَجَعَلَهُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَالْمَرْأَةَ خَلْفَهُمَا

[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ prayed while standing next to me and a woman. He told me to stand on his right side and the woman behind us."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ صَلَّى بِهِ وَبِامْرَأَةٍ قَالَ فَأَقَامَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَالْمَرْأَةَ خَلْفَنَا

The Apostle of Allah ﷺ came to us and there was none in our house but I, my mother and my aunt Umm Haram. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Stand up so that I may lead you in prayer (and there was no time for prescribed prayer). He led us in prayer. A person said to Thabit: Where stood Anas with him (the Holy Prophet)? He replied: He was on the right side. He then blessed us, the members of the household with every good of this world and of the Hereafter. My mother said: Messenger of Allah (and then, pointing towards Anas, said), here is your little servant, invoke the blessing of Allah upon him too. He then blessed me with every good, and he concluded his blessings for me (with these words): Allah! increase his wealth, and his children and make (them the source of) blessing for him. دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَا نَحْنُ إِلَّا أَنَا وَأُمِّي وَخَالَتِي أُمُّ حَرَامٍ فَقَالَ قُومُوا أُصَلِّ بِكُمْ فَصَلَّى بِنَا فِي غَيْرِ وَقْتِ صَلَاةٍ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ لِثَابِتٍ فَأَيْنَ جَعَلَ أَنَسًا؟ قَالَ جَعَلَهُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ دَعَا لَنَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ بِكُلِّ خَيْرٍ مِنْ أَمْرِ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ فَقَالَتْ أُمِّي خُوَيْدِمُكَ ادْعُ اللهَ لَهُ قَالَ فَدَعَا لِي بِكُلِّ خَيْرٍ فَكَانَ آخِرُ مَا دَعَا لِي أَنْ قَالَ اللهُمَّ أَكْثِرْ مَالَهُ وَوَلَدَهُ وَبَارِكْ لَهُ فِيهِ

[Machine] Verily, I understood a level of utmost understanding from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , when he drew water from a bucket in our house. Mahmoud said: 'It was narrated to me by 'Utbaan ibn Maalik who said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, my eyesight has become weak and when the rain becomes intense and the valley overflows, it becomes difficult for me to reach the mosque of my people for prayer. So if I were to pray in my own house in a specific place, would that be considered a place of prayer?' The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: 'Yes, it would be.' So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , came to me the next day with Abu Bakr. They sought permission and I granted it to them. He did not sit down until he said: 'Where would you like me to pray in your house?' So I pointed to a corner, and the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , advanced and we lined up behind him. He prayed two units of prayer with us, and we made a makeshift platform for the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ .

إِنِّي لَأَعْقِلُ مَجَّةً مَجَّهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ دَلْوٍ فِي دَارِنَا قَالَ مَحْمُودٌ فَحَدَّثَنِي عِتْبَانُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ بَصَرِي قَدْ سَاءَ وَإِنَّ الْأَمْطَارَ إِذَا اشْتَدَّتْ وَسَالَ الْوَادِي حَالَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ الصَّلَاةِ فِي مَسْجِدِ قَوْمِي فَلَوْ صَلَّيْتَ فِي مَنْزِلِي مَكَانًا أَتَّخِذُهُ مُصَلًّى؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَغَدَا عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَعَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَاسْتَأْذَنَا فَأُذِنَ لَهُمَا فَمَا جَلَسَ حَتَّى قَالَ أَيْنَ تُحِبُّ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ فِي مَنْزِلِكَ؟ فَأَشَرْتُ لَهُ إِلَى نَاحِيَةٍ فَتَقَدَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَفَفْنَا خَلْفَهُ فَصَلَّى بِنَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَحَبَسْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى جَشِيشَةٍ صَنَعْنَاهَا لَهُ

[Machine] And Ali, when they were three, two of them stood behind him.

وَعَلِيٍّ ؓ إِذَا كَانُوا ثَلَاثَةً يَقُومُ الِاثْنَانِ وَرَاءَهُ

Get up, I shall lead you in prayer. Anas said: I got up and took a mat which had become black on account of long use. I then washed it with water. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood upon it. I and the orphan (Ibn Abi Dumairah, the freed slave of the prophet) stood in a row behind him. The old women stood behind us. He then led us in two raka'at of prayer and left. أَنَّ جَدَّتَهُ مُلَيْكَةَ دَعَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لِطَعَامٍ صَنَعَتْهُ لَهُ فَأَكَلَ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ قُومُوا فَأُصَلِّيَ بِكُمْ قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَقُمْتُ إِلَى حَصِيرٍ لَنَا قَدِ اسْوَدَّ مِنْ طُولِ مَا لُبِسَ فَنَضَحْتُهُ بِمَاءٍ فَقَامَ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَصَفَفْتُ أَنَا وَالْيَتِيمُ وَرَاءَهُ وَالْعَجُوزُ مِنْ وَرَائِنَا فَصَلَّى لَنَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let those with good dreams and interpretation come to me firstly, then those who seek guidance, then those who follow them. Beware of engaging in idle talk in the marketplaces." This is the wording of Yahya's narration, and in the narration of Muhammad with his chain of narrators, from the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "Let those with good dreams and interpretation come to me firstly, then those who seek guidance, then those who follow them. Do not differ among yourselves, for your hearts will differ. And beware of engaging in idle talk in the marketplaces."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِيَلِيَنِي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الْأَحْلَامِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثَلَاثًا وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَهَيْشَاتِ الْأَسْوَاقِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى وَفِي رِوَايَةِ مُحَمَّدٍ بِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لِيَلِيَنِي مِنْكُمْ ذَوُو الْأَحْلَامِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ وَلَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ وَإِيَّاكُمْ هَوْشَاتِ الْأَسْوَاقِ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to gently pat our shoulders (to make sure the row was straight) at the time of prayer, saying: ‘Keep (the rows) straight, do not differ from one another lest your hearts should suffer from discord. Let those who are forbearing and wise stand closest to me, then those who are next to them, then those who are next to them.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 976)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَمْسَحُ مَنَاكِبَنَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَيَقُولُ لَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ لِيَلِيَنِي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الْأَحْلَامِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ

[Machine] The passage translates to: "That the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to like that the Muhajireen (migrants) and Ansar (helpers) stood behind him in prayer so that they could learn from him."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يَلِيَهُ الْمُهَاجِرُونَ وَالْأَنْصَارُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ لِيَأْخُذُوا عَنْهُ 5164

[Machine] Abu Malik al-Ash'ari said: "Should I not tell you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "He would establish the prayer and then line up the men, and the boys would line up behind them. Then he would lead them in prayer. He used to raise his voice when he would recite, bow, and prostrate. When he raised his head from prostration, he would say the takbir (saying Allahu Akbar). And when he would stand up after the two prostrations, he would say the takbir and then give the salaam (saying As-salamu alaykum) to his right and left. Then he would say: 'This is how one should pray.' Abdullah Al-A'la said: 'I never understood him to mean anything other than the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ .'"

قَالَ أَبُو مَالِكٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ أَلَا أُحَدِّثُكُمْ بِصَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ فَصَفَّ يَعْنِي الرِّجَالَ وَصَفَّ خَلْفَهُمُ الْغِلْمَانَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى بِهِمْ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ إِذَا سَجَدَ وَإِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ كَبَّرَ وَإِذَا قَامَ مِنَ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ كَبَّرَ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا صَلَاةٌ قَالَ عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى لَا أَحْسِبُهُ إِلَّا قَالَ صَلَاةُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to lead men in prayer, then young boys, then women. This narration is weak, and the first one is stronger. And Allah knows best.

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَلِيهِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ الرِّجَالُ ثُمَّ الصِّبْيَانُ ثُمَّ النِّسَاءُ هَذَا الْإِسْنَادُ ضَعِيفٌ وَالْأَوَّلُ أَقْوَى وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ

the best of the men’s row is the first and the worst of them is the last, but the best of the women’s rows is the last and the worst of them is the first. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 678)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَيْرُ صُفُوفِ الرِّجَالِ أَوَّلُهَا وَشَرُّهَا آخِرُهَا وَخَيْرُ صُفُوفِ النِّسَاءِ آخِرُهَا وَشَرُّهَا أَوَّلُهَا

the best of the men’s row is the first and the worst of them is the last, but the best of the women’s rows is the last and the worst of them is the first. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 678)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَيْرُ صُفُوفِ الرِّجَالِ أَوَّلُهَا وَشَرُّهَا آخِرُهَا وَخَيْرُ صُفُوفِ النِّسَاءِ آخِرُهَا وَشَرُّهَا أَوَّلُهَا

[Machine] There was a woman who used to pray behind the Prophet ﷺ and she was the most beautiful of all people. Some men were in the back rows and they looked at her. One of them used to look at her from under his armpit, and another one used to move forward to the first row so that he could not see her. Then Allah revealed this verse: "And We certainly know those who are ahead of you from among you and We certainly know those who are behind you." [Al-Hijr 24]

كَانَتِ امْرَأَةٌ تُصَلِّي خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَجْمَلَ النَّاسِ فَكَانَ نَاسٌ فِي آخِرِ صُفُوفِ الرِّجَالِ فَنَظَرُوا إِلَيْهَا قَالَ وَكَانَ أَحَدُهُمْ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ تَحْتِ إِبْطِهِ وَكَانَ أَحَدُهُمْ يَتَقَدَّمُ إِلَى الصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ لَا يَرَاهَا فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ} [الحجر 24]

“A woman used to perform prayer behind the Prophet ﷺ, and she was one of the most beautiful of people. Some of the people used to go into the first row so that they would not see her, and some of them used to lag behind so that they would be in the last row, and when they bowed, they would do like this so that they could see her from beneath their armpits. Then Allah revealed: “And indeed, We know the first generations of you who had passed away, and indeed, We know the present generations of you (mankind), and also those who will some afterwards.” [15:24] concerning her matter. أَنَّهُ قَالَ كَانَتْ تُصَلِّي خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ امْرَأَةٌ حَسْنَاءُ مِنْ أَحْسَنِ النَّاسِ وَكَانَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ يَسْتَقْدِمُ فِي الصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ لِئَلَّا يَرَاهَا وَيَسْتَأْخِرُ بَعْضُهُمْ حَتَّى يَكُونَ فِي الصَّفِّ الْمُؤَخَّرِ فَإِذَا رَكَعَ قَالَ هَكَذَا وَنَظَرَ مِنْ تَحْتِ إِبْطِهِ وَجَافَى يَدَهُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى فِي شَأْنِهَا {وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ} [الحجر 24]

[Machine] I entered with Alqamah to Abdullah bin Mas'ood during his migration. When the sun declined, he stood up for prayer. So I and my companion stood behind him. He took my hand and the hand of my companion, and he placed us on his right and left. Then he stood between us and said, "This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do when there were three people. He would lead us in prayer. When he finished, he said, 'There will be leaders who will delay the prayer from its proper time. Do not wait for them and pray with them as a voluntary prayer.' And this is feasible if there is abrogation, and we have evidence of its abrogation from the narratives of Jabir bin Abdullah, Anas bin Malik, and what has been narrated from Ali and Umar and the common people. And we have narrated from Abu Dharr what indicates that what Ibn Mas'ood witnessed from the Messenger of Allah in that matter was only in individual prayer, and each of them used to pray individually."

دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَعَلْقَمَةُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ بِالْهَاجِرَةِ فَلَمَّا أَنْ مَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ أَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ فَقُمْتُ أَنَا وَصَاحِبِي خَلْفَهُ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِي وَيَدِ صَاحِبِي فَجَعَلَنَا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَقَامَ بَيْنَنَا وَقَالَ هَكَذَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَصْنَعُ إِذَا كَانُوا ثَلَاثَةً فَصَلَّى بِنَا فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ إِنَّهَا سَتَكُونُ أَئِمَّةٌ يُؤَخِّرُونَ الصَّلَاةَ عَنْ مَوَاقِيتِهَا فَلَا تَنْتَظِرُوهُمْ بِهَا وَاجْعَلُوا الصَّلَاةَ مَعَهُمْ سُبْحَةً وَهَذَا يُحْتَمَلُ إِنْ كَانَ ثَمَّ نَسْخٌ وَاسْتَدْلَلْنَا عَنْ نَسْخِهِ بِمَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ خَبَرِ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ وَأَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ وَمَا رُوِّينَا عَنْ عَلِيٍّ وَعُمَرَ ؓ وَالْعَامَّةِ وَقَدْ رُوِّينَا عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ مَا دَلَّ عَلَى أَنَّ الَّذِي شَاهَدَهُ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ فِي ذَلِكَ إِنَّمَا شَاهَدَهُ فِي غَيْرِ صَلَاةِ جَمَاعَةٍ وَأَنَّ كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمْ كَانَ يُصَلِّي لِنَفْسِهِ

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood one night in a certain place and performed the last night prayer (Isha) there. When the people saw that they had joined him in his place of prayer, he left to his mount until the springs dried up and his place of prayer was vacant. He stood there alone. Abu Dharr said, "So I approached and stood behind him. He gestured to his right and Abdullah ibn Mas'ud came and stood behind him and behind me. He gestured to him with his left hand. So we stood in this manner. He placed his thumb, middle finger, and the finger next to it (ring finger) together and he prayed. Each one of us prayed individually for himself. Al-Humaidi said, "Ibn Mas'ud went to him (Abu Dharr) and he thought that the Prophet ﷺ used to lead them in prayer. When Abu Dharr said, 'Each one of us prays individually for himself,' his statement clarified that he knew from the Prophet ﷺ that he did not lead them in prayer, although it was he who started the prayer with them at its initiation. Ibn Mas'ud, the latecomer, whose intention came after the initiation of the prayer, still hurried to join the prayer. 5173. Abu Sa'id ibn Abi 'Amr narrated to us that Al-Hasan ibn Ya'qoub ibn Yusuf narrated to us that Yahya ibn Abi Talib narrated to us that 'Abdul Wahhab ibn 'Ata narrated to us, from Hisham ibn Hassan, who said: "I mentioned that to Ibn Sirin, meaning what Ibn Mas'ud did. Ibn Sirin said, 'The mosque was narrow.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَامَ لَيْلَةً مِنَ اللَّيَالِي مَقَامَ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَصَلَّى فِيهِ الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ فَلَمَّا رَأَى الْقَوْمَ قَدْ ثَبَتُوا مَعَهُ فِي مُصَلَّاهُ انْصَرَفَ إِلَى رَحْلِهِ حَتَّى انْكَسَفَتِ الْعُيُونُ وَخَلَا مَقَامُهُ قَامَ فِيهِ وَحْدَهُ قَالَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ فَأَقْبَلْتُ فَقُمْتُ خَلْفَهُ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَى يَمِينِهِ وَجَاءَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَامَ خَلْفَهُ وَخَلْفِي فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ بِشِمَالِهِ فَقُمْنَا هَكَذَا فَجَمَعَ بَيْنَ السَّبَابَةِ وَالْوُسْطَى وَالْأُخْرَى الَّتِي تَلِي الْخِنْصَرَ يُصَلِّي كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنَّا لِنَفْسِهِ قَالَ الْحُمَيْدِيُّ ذَهَبَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ إِلَى هَذَا وَهُوَ يَظُنُّ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَؤُمُّهُمْ فَلَمَّا قَالَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنَّا يُصَلِّي لِنَفْسِهِ كَانَ قَوْلُهُ قَدْ بَيَّنَ أَنَّهُ عَلِمَ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَؤُمَّهُمْ وَهُوَ الَّذِي ابْتَدَأَ الصَّلَاةَ مَعَهُ عِنْدَ تَحْرِيمِهَا وَابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ الْجَائِي الدَّاخِلُ الَّذِي سَبَقَتْهُ النِّيَّةُ عِنْدَ تَحْرِيمِهَا 5173 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو أنبأ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يُوسُفَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أنبأ عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَطَاءٍ أنبأ هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ قَالَ ذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِابْنِ سِيرِينَ يَعْنِي مَا فَعَلَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَالَ ابْنُ سِيرِينَ كَانَ الْمَسْجِدُ ضَيِّقًا

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ got up from sleep to go to a water source, then he performed ablution. Afterwards, he stood up and prayed. The narrator then said, "So I got up and performed ablution, then I stood on his left side. He turned me around from behind until he positioned me on his right side."

فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ إِلَى سِقَايَةٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى قَالَ فَقُمْتُ فَتَوَضَّأْتُ ثُمَّ قُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَأَدَارَنِي مِنْ خَلْفِهِ حَتَّى جَعَلَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ

[Machine] "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Establish the rows in prayer; for indeed, the straightness of the rows is a part of the beauty of prayer.'"

وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَقِيمُوا الصَّفَّ فِي الصَّلَاةِ؛ فَإِنَّ إِقَامَةَ الصَّفِّ مِنْ حُسْنِ الصَّلَاةِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Straighten your rows, for straightening the rows is part of perfecting the prayer."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَوُّوا صُفُوفَكُمْ؛ فَإِنَّ تَسْوِيَةَ الصَّفِّ مِنْ تَمَامِ الصَّلَاةِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Straighten your rows, for I see you behind my back."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَقِيمُوا الصُّفُوفَ؛ فَإِنِّي أَرَاكُمْ خَلْفَ ظَهْرِي

The Prophet ﷺ said: Stand close together in your rows, bring them near one another, and stand neck to neck, for by Him in Whose hand my soul is, I see the devil coming in through openings in the row just like a small black sheep. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 667)

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ رُصُّوا صُفُوفَكُمْ وَقَارِبُوا بَيْنَهَا وَحَاذُوا بِالْأَعْنَاقِ فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ إِنِّي لَأَرَى الشَّيْطَانَ يَدْخُلُ مِنْ خَلَلِ الصَّفِّ كَأَنَّهَا الْحَذَفُ

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Straighten your rows in your prayers or Allah will cause discord among your faces."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَتُسَوُّنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ فِي صَلَاتِكُمْ أَوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللهُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكُمْ

[Machine] I heard him saying that the Prophet ﷺ used to straighten the rows and he saw a man standing outside the row, so he said, "Either you straighten your rows or Allah will cause division among your faces on the Day of Resurrection."

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُسَوِّي الصُّفُوفَ فَرَأَى رَجُلًا خَارِجًا مِنَ الصَّفِّ فَقَالَ لَتُقِيمُنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ أَوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللهُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to straighten the rows like shaft of an arrow is straightened before the head is attached to it. He saw a man whose chest was sticking out from the row. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Make your rows straight or Allah will cause your faces to be deformed." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 810)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُقَوِّمُ الصُّفُوفَ كَمَا يُقَوَّمُ الْقِدَاحُ فَأَبْصَرَ رَجُلًا يَوْمًا خَارِجًا صَدْرُهُ مِنَ الصَّفِّ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَتُقَوِّمُنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ أَوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللهُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكُمْ

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid attention to the people and said three times; straighten your rows (in prayer); by Allah, you must straighten your rows, or Allah will certainly put your faces in contrary directions. I then saw that every person stood in prayer keeping his shoulder close to that of the other, and his knee close to that of the other, and his ankle close to that of the other. سَمِعْتُ النُّعْمَانَ بْنَ بَشِيرٍ يَقُولُ أَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى النَّاسِ بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ أَقِيمُوا صُفُوفَكُمْ ثَلَاثًا وَاللهِ لَتُقِيمُنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ أَوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللهُ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِكُمْ قَالَ فَرَأَيْتُ الرَّجُلَ يُلْزِقُ مَنْكِبَهُ بِمَنْكِبِ صَاحِبِهِ وَرُكْبَتَهُ بِرُكْبَةِ صَاحِبِهِ وَكَعْبَهُ بِكَعْبِهِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Arrange yourselves in rows and do not let the offspring of the heap separate you." It was asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what are the offspring of the heap?" He said, "They are black-skinned, naked sheep found in the land of Yemen." Hafs ibn Ghayath narrated this from Al-Hasan ibn Ubayd Allah and said, "Like the offspring of the heap."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ تَرَاصُّوا فِي الصَّفِّ لَا يَتَخَلَّلُكُمْ أَوْلَادُ الْحَذَفِ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَمَا أَوْلَادُ الْحَذَفِ؟ قَالَ ضَأْنٌ جُرْدٌ سُودٌ تَكُونُ بِأَرْضِ الْيَمَنِ وَرَوَاهُ حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ وَقَالَ كَأَوْلَادِ الْحَذَفِ

[Machine] "About the Prophet ﷺ, he ordered them to straighten the rows, so do not allow gaps amongst you like the young ones of camels. And the young ones of camels are black, skinny, and found in Yemen."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ أَمَرَهُمْ بِرَصِّ الصُّفُوفِ لَا يَتَخَلَّلُكُمْ كَأَوْلَادِ الْحَذَفِ وَأَوْلَادُ الْحَذَفِ غَنْمٌ سُودٌ جُرْدٌ تَكُونُ بِالْيَمَنِ

The Prophet ﷺ said: Set the rows in order, stand shoulder to shoulder, close the gaps, be pliant in the hands of your brethren, and do not leave openings for the devil. If anyone joins up a row, Allah will join him up, but if anyone breaks a row, Allah will cut him off. Abu Dawud said: The name of Abu Shjrah is Kathir b. Murrah. أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَقِيمُوا الصُّفُوفَ وَحَاذُوا بَيْنَ الْمَنَاكِبِ وَسُدُّوا الْخَلَلَ وَلِينُوا بِأَيْدِي إِخْوَانِكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُوا فُرُجَاتٍ لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَمَنْ وَصَلَ صَفًّا وَصَلَهُ اللهُ وَمَنْ قَطَعَ صَفًّا قَطَعَهُ اللهُ ﷻ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ لَمْ يَقُلْ عِيسَى بِأَيْدِي إِخْوَانِكُمْ

[Machine] Narrated Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Verily, Allah and His angels send blessings upon those who join the rows (in congregational prayer)."

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ يَصِلُونَ الصُّفُوفَ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "The best among you are those who are gentle in their prayer." Zaid ibn Aslam also narrated this from the Prophet, ﷺ , as a mursal hadith.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خِيَارُكُمْ أَلْيَنُكُمْ مَنَاكِبَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَرَوَاهُ أَيْضًا زَيْدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مُرْسَلًا

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and said:'Will you not form rows as the angels form rows before their Lord? They said: 'How do the angels form rows before their lord? He said: 'They complete the first row and fill the gaps in the rows."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 816)

خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى الصُّفُوفِ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَصُفُّونَ كَمَا تَصُفُّ الْمَلَائِكَةُ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ؟ قَالُوا وَكَيْفَ تَصُفُّ الْمَلَائِكَةُ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ؟ قَالَ يُتِمُّونَ الصُّفُوفَ الْمُقَدَّمَةَ وَيَتَرَاصُّونَ فِي الصَّفِّ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah said, "Complete the first row, then the second, even if there is a deficiency in the back rows. He used to say, 'The best rows for men are the front rows, and the best rows for women are the back rows.'"

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَتِمُّوا الصَّفَّ الْأَوَّلَ ثُمَّ الثَّانِي وَإِنْ كَانَ نَقْصٌ كَانَ فِي الْمُؤَخَّرِ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ خَيْرُ صُفُوفِ الرِّجَالِ أَوَّلُهَا وَخَيْرُ صُفُوفِ النِّسَاءِ آخِرُهَا

The Prophet ﷺ said: Complete the front row, then the one that comes next, and if there is any incompleteness, let it be in the last row. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 671)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَتِمُّوا الصَّفَّ الْمُقَدَّمَ ثُمَّ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ فَمَا كَانَ مِنْ نَقْصٍ فَلْيَكُنْ فِي الصَّفِّ الْمُؤَخَّرِ

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "If only they knew, or if only you knew, what was in the first row, there would not be except a lottery."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْ يَعْلَمُونَ أَوْ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِي الصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ مَا كَانَ إِلَّا قُرْعَةً

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the dawn prayer one day. And he said: Is so and so present? They said: No. He (again) asked: Is so and so present? They replied: No. He then said: These two prayers are the ones which are most burdensome to hypocrites. If you knew what they contain (i.e. blessings), you would come to them, even though you had to crawl on your knees. The first row is like that of the angels, and if you knew the nature of its excellence, you would race to join it. A man's prayer said along with another is purer than his prayer said alone, and his prayer with two men is purer than his prayer with one, but if there are more it is more pleasing to Allah, the Almighty, the Majestic. صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الصُّبْحَ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ نَظَرَ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ أَشَاهِدٌ فُلَانٌ؟ قَالُوا نَعَمْ فَقَالَ أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ صَلَاةٍ أَثْقَلُ عَلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ مِنْ هَاتَيْنِ الصَّلَاتَيْنِ يَعْنِي الصُّبْحَ وَصَلَاةَ الْعِشَاءِ وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِيهِمَا لَأَتَوْهُمَا وَلَوْ حَبْوًا وَإِنَّ الصَّفَّ الْأَوَّلَ عَلَى مِثْلِ صَفِّ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَلَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِيهِ لَابْتَدَرْتُمُوهُ وَإِنَّ صَلَاةَ الرَّجُلِ مَعَ الرَّجُلِ أَزْكَى مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ وَحْدَهُ وَصَلَاتَهُ مَعَ الرَّجُلَيْنِ أَزْكَى مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ مَعَ رَجُلٍ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرَ كَانَ أَحَبَّ إِلَى اللهِ ﷻ

[Machine] Narrated by al-Nabi ﷺ that he used to pray three rak'ahs on the first row and one rak'ah on the second, and this was narrated by Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Harith al-Taymi on the authority of Khalid, on the authority of al-Arbaad, without mentioning Jubayr ibn Nufayr in its chain.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى الصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ ثَلَاثًا وَعَلَى الَّذِي يَلِيهِ وَاحِدَةً وَرَوَاهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ التَّيْمِيُّ عَنْ خَالِدٍ عَنِ الْعِرْبَاضِ دُونَ ذِكْرِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ فِي إِسْنَادِهِ

It was narrated from ‘Irbad bin Sariyah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to ask for forgiveness for the first row three times and for the second row twice. (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 996)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ اسْتَغْفَرَ لِلصَّفِّ الْمُقَدَّمِ ثَلَاثًا وَلِلصَّفِّ الثَّانِي مَرَّةً

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to come to us when we stood up to pray and he would wipe our necks and chests and say, "Do not differ, for if you differ, your hearts will differ. Indeed, Allah and His angels send prayers upon the first row or he said, the rows."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْتِينَا إِذَا قُمْنَا إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَيَمْسَحُ عَوَاتِقَنَا وَصُدُورَنَا وَيَقُولُ لَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى الصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ أَوْ قَالَ الصُّفُوفِ الْأُوَلِ

Abu Sa’Id al-Khudri said; The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a tendency among his companions to go to the back. He said to them; come forward and follow my lead, and let those who come after you follow your lead people will continue to keep to the back till Allah would put them at the back. أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ رَأَى فِي أَصْحَابِهِ تَأَخُّرًا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ تَقَدَّمُوا فَأْتَمُّوا بِي وَلْيَأْتَمَّ بِكُمْ مَنْ بَعْدَكُمْ لَا يَزَالُ قَوْمٌ يَتَأَخَّرُونَ حَتَّى يُؤَخِّرَهُمُ اللهُ

‘A’ishah reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying the people will continue to keep themselves away from the front row until Allah will keep them away (from the front) in the Hell-fire. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 679)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا يَزَالُ قَوْمٌ يَتَأَخَّرُونَ عَنِ الصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ حَتَّى يُؤَخِّرَهُمُ اللهُ ﷻ فِي النَّارِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah and His angels bless those who are on the right flanks of the rows. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 676)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى مَيَامِنِ الصُّفُوفِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah and His angels bless those who are on the right flanks of the rows. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 676)
