[Machine] As for the two sheikhs, they did not mention anything beyond the virtues. We have started in the first mention of the companion by discussing his lineage and death, then we mentioned what is valid about their conditions from their virtues that they did not mention. So I did not forget to mention Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi and his peers in knowledge.

27.7 [Machine] The Killing of Amir al-Mu'minin Uthman ibn Affan

٢٧۔٧ ذِكْرُ مَقْتَلِ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ ؓ

[Machine] And the first thing that a scholar cannot be ignorant of is the knowledge of the reason that led to this, which is the matter of Abdullah bin Saad bin Abi Sarh, who is the cousin of Uthman bin Affan, and Walid bin Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt, who is the brother of Uthman's mother. As for Abdullah bin Saad bin Abi Sarh, the authentic narrations speak that he was a scribe for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , but his treachery in writing became apparent, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dismissed him. He then apostatized from Islam and joined the people of Makkah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ allowed shedding his blood on the day of the conquest, but he was not killed until Uthman came with him, and he had reconsidered Islam. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted him safety and spared his life.

[Machine] I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when Uthman ibn Affan approached. When he neared, the Prophet said, "O Uthman, you will be killed while reciting Surah Al-Baqarah, and your blood will spill on the verse, 'And Allah is sufficient for you against them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.'" (Quran 2:137). And on the Day of Resurrection, you will be raised as a leader over every oppressor. The people of the East and the West will envy you, and you will intercede for the number of Rabia and Mudar.

They wanted me to pledge allegiance, but I said, 'I swear by Allah, I feel ashamed before Allah to pledge allegiance to people who have killed a man.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Do you not feel ashamed before the angels from whom you feel ashamed?' And I swear by Allah, I feel ashamed before Allah to pledge allegiance while Uthman, a murdered man, lies on the ground without being buried yet.' So they left me alone. When Uthman was buried and people came back to me, they asked me for allegiance. I said, 'O Allah, I am apprehensive about what I am about to do.' Then determination came, and I pledged allegiance. They said, 'O Amir al-Mu'minin, it was as if my heart had been split open.' I said, 'O Allah, take from me for Uthman until You are pleased.'"

[Machine] "On the day of Al-Jamal (Battle of the Camel), I went out to see the corpses. Ali ibn Abi Talib, Al-Hasan ibn Ali, Ammar ibn Yasir, Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr, and Zaid ibn Suhana were walking amongst the corpses. Al-Hasan ibn Ali noticed a dead body with his face covered. He turned it over and screamed, then said, 'Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.' Quraish rejoiced and Abu Bakr's father asked him, 'Who is it, my son?' He replied, 'It is Muhammad ibn Talha ibn Ubaydullah.' His father said, 'Indeed, by Allah, he was a righteous young man, then he became sad and sorrowful.' Al-Hasan said to him, 'O father, I used to dissuade you from going on this journey, but so-and-so and so-and-so convinced you against my advice.' He replied, 'That is true, my son, and if I could have chosen, I would have preferred to die twenty years before this.' Muhammad ibn Hattab said, 'I stood up and said, O Amir al-Mu'minin (Commander of the Faithful), we are coming to Medina, and the people are asking us about Uthman, what should we say about him?' Ali ibn Abi Talib said to Ammar ibn Yasir and Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr, 'You both speak.' They spoke and Ali ibn Abi Talib said, 'O Ammar and Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr, you both claim that Uthman seized power and mismanaged the caliphate, and by Allah, you have also done wrong and will be held accountable for it. You will present yourselves before a fair judge who will pass judgment between you.' Then he said to Muhammad ibn Hattab, 'When you arrive in Medina and people ask you about Uthman, say, 'By Allah, he was among those who believed and did righteous deeds, then became cautious and believed, then became cautious and did good deeds. And Allah loves those who do good. So let the believers put their trust in Allah.'"

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ received the news, he went out to the people, ascended the pulpit, informed them of his killing, and spread his shirt over the pulpit. He wept, and the people wept with him. He began saying, 'A matter has come to me that brings distress to the people, brings tears to the eyes, and brings humility to life. It brings tears to the noble noses. The leader of the believers has suffered this calamity, and this calamity is like the breaking of mountains. It has caused a commotion among the people of Medina, a group of whom are murderers, and others who have abandoned him. I will mourn for Abu Amr with every lamentation and eulogy known to me, with tears flowing down my cheeks. I will not sleep until these people are arrested and the guilty ones are brought to justice.' He entered her grave and made his space in the grave seem as though it was spacious and level with her. He came out of her grave with his eyes shedding tears and his cheeks wet. When he returned, Umar ibn al-Khattab said, "O Messenger of Allah, I saw you do something for this woman that you did not do for anyone else." He said, "O Umar, this woman was my mother who gave birth to me. Abu Talib used to arrange banquets and invite people to his gatherings, and we would gather around his food. This woman would prefer me over everyone else and would give me a bigger portion. So, I reciprocate her favor. And Jibril, peace be upon him, also informed me that Allah Almighty has commanded seventy thousand angels to pray upon her."

[Machine] Muawiya said to Saad bin Abi Waqqas, "What prevents you from insulting Ibn Abi Talib?" Saad replied, "I do not insult what I mentioned three times, which the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said. It is more beloved to me than the red camels." Muawiya asked, "What are they, O Abu Ishaq?" Saad replied, "I do not insult him what I mentioned when the revelation came down upon him, and he took Ali and his two sons and Fatimah and hid them under his garment, then said, 'O Lord, these are the people of my household.' And I do not insult him what I mentioned when he left me behind in the Battle of Tabuk, which the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, led. Ali said to him, 'You left me with the children and women.' He replied, 'Do you not like to be to me like Aaron was to Moses, except that there is no prophethood after me?' And I do not insult him what I mentioned on the day of Khaybar, when the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, 'I will give this banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah will grant victory through his hands.' So, we rushed towards the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and he asked, 'Where is Ali?' They told him that he had sore eyes. He said, 'Call him.' When Ali came, the Prophet spat in his face and then gave him the banner. Allah granted him victory. I swear by Allah, Muawiya did not mention anything correctly until he left the city."

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched an army and he put 'Ali bin Abi Talib in charge of it. He left on the expedition and he entered upon a female slave. So four of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ scolded him, and they made a pact saying: "[If] we meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we will inform him of what 'Ali did." When the Muslims returned from the journey, they would begin with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and give him Salam, then they would go to their homes. So when the expedition arrived, they gave Salam to the Prophet ﷺ, and one of the four stood saying: "O Messenger of Allah! Do you see that 'Ali bin Abi Talib did such and such." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him. Then the second one stood and said as he said, and he turned away from him. Then the third stood before him, and said as he said, and he turned away from him. Then the fourth stood and said as they had said. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ faced him, and the anger was visible on his face, he said: "What do you want from 'Ali?! What do you want from 'Ali?! What do you want from 'Ali?! Indeed 'Ali is from me, and I am from him, and he is the ally of every believer after me." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3712)

Indeed, Quraysh does not suffer from any harm when it follows its own path, and in Ali, there is all the good that is among them and none of the bad." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in summary.

It is the verse of Allah Almighty that says: 'And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.' (Quran 49:9)

Abdullah replied, "What do you want from me regarding this?" So, I left him and he departed until he was out of sight. Abdullah bin Umar came to us and said, "I have found something within myself concerning this verse. I felt that I should not fight against this rebellious faction, as Allah Almighty commanded." This is a significant narrative narrated from Abdullah bin Umar by a group of prominent Tabi'een. I have presented the hadith of Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamza, narrated by Az-Zuhri, and I have focused on it because it meets the conditions of both Al-Bukhari and Muslim."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on a military expedition with a group of his companions. I competed with a man from the Ansar in hastening towards the enemy. I mounted my horse and as I approached the enemy, the man raised his voice in takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar, meaning "Allah is the Greatest"). I attacked him and killed him. Later, I realized that he only said takbeer to protect himself, but it did not stop me from killing him. When we returned, I went ahead to the Prophet ﷺ and he asked me, "What did you do today, O Usama?" I replied, "I attacked a man who raised his voice in takbeer, thinking he did so to protect himself." The Prophet ﷺ said, "How can you bear to kill him after he said 'Allahu Akbar'? Did you not separate his heart from his body?" I said, "What he said did not deter me." After that day, the Prophet ﷺ kept repeating to me, "I will not fight against a person who says 'Allahu Akbar' more than anything else he says until I meet him."
