27. Book of the Companions
[Machine] "Umar was struck on Wednesday for four more nights from the month of Dhu al-Hijjah." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.
[Machine] "He ﷺ said on the pulpit, 'Indeed, I saw in a dream as if a rooster had pecked me three times. So I said, 'I am a foreigner' and I have entrusted my affairs to these six people whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away while being pleased with – Uthman, Ali, Talhah, Zubair, Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf, and Saad ibn Abi Waqqas. So whoever is chosen from them, he is the caliph.' Adh-Dhahabi remained silent about him in the summary."
[Machine] Oh Amir al-Mu'minin, Mu'awiyah has been too harsh on me, so please ask him to ease up on me." 'Umar said to him, "Fear Allah and be kind to your leader." Mu'awiyah said, "Is it 'Umar's intention to meet me and speak to me about easing up on him?" Abu Lu'luah became angry. His name was Fayroz and he was a Christian. He said, "Everyone's fairness is mine alone?" He became angrier and decided to kill him. He made a dagger with two heads, sharpened it, and poisoned it. 'Umar raised his voice, something he would not normally do during prayer time, and said, "Straighten your rows." He came and stood in the row right behind 'Umar during Fajr prayer. When the prayer was established, he spoke and said, "Straighten your rows." Then he raised his voice and let out a loud cry. He struck 'Umar on his shoulder, then on another spot, and finally in his abdomen. 'Umar fell. He struck thirteen men with him, and seven of them scattered. Six of them died, and 'Umar was carried away. The people did not move until the sun was about to rise. 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf called out, "O people, prayer, prayer!" The people rushed to pray. 'Abd al-Rahman went forward and led them in prayer. He recited the shortest two Surahs in the Quran. When he finished, people turned to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab. He called for a drink to examine the wound. They brought him wine, and he drank it. He came out, and no one realized if it was blood or wine. He called for milk, and they brought it to him. He drank it, and the milk flowed out of his wound. They said, "You're fine, O Amir al-Mu'minin." He said, "If death is pain, then I have already died." Al-Dhahabi did not mention this incident in his summary.

[Machine] About Mina in the last pilgrimage, I went to Al-Bathaa and piled up a mound there. Then I threw his garment on it and lied down, stretching his hands towards the sky and said, "O Allah, my old age has increased, my strength has weakened, and my followers have multiplied, so take me to You without being lost or misguided." Then he came in the month of Dhul-Hijjah and addressed the people, saying, "O people, I have established Sunnah for you and imposed obligations on you, and left you on a clear path." He then struck one hand against the other, except if you turn to people right or left." I was not far from Dhul-Hijjah until Umar was killed, and I heard Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab saying, "Abu Lulu'ah, who killed Umar, stabbed him twelve times. Six of them died and six were injured, and he had a knife with two edges, so he stabbed himself and killed himself."
[Machine] "That he was stabbed and then died, so he was washed and shrouded."
[Machine] He was stabbed, so I said, "Rejoice in Paradise, O Commander of the Faithful. You embraced Islam when people disbelieved and you fought alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when people abandoned him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away while he was pleased with you, and there was no disagreement regarding your caliphate. You were martyred, and he said, 'Prepare a response for me' and I prepared it for him. He said, 'By Allah, besides whom there is no deity, if I had all the wealth on earth in exchange for avoiding the hardship of Day of Resurrection, I would do it."
[Machine] "That Suhaib prayed for and blessed the age of Umar in the mosque."
[Machine] When Umar was killed, Ali and Uthman both prepared to offer their prayers for him. So Suhaib said to them, "I greet you on behalf of myself, as I have been entrusted with more of your matters than offering prayers for Umar. And while I pray the obligatory prayers with you, Suhaib offered prayers for him."
[Machine] "Umar performed the Hajj pilgrimage ten times consecutively, including one during the caliphate of Abu Bakr and nine during his own caliphate. He was buried beside Abu Bakr in Aisha's house. His caliphate lasted for ten years, five months, and twenty-nine days."
[Machine] He was stabbed. He said to Abdullah, "Go to Aisha and convey my greetings to her, and say to her, 'Verily, Umar says to you, if it does not harm you nor make things difficult for you, then I would love to be buried with my two companions. But if it harms you or makes things difficult for you, then by Allah, I have been buried in this graveyard with the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the mothers of the believers. Who is better than Umar?' " The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to her and she said, "It does not harm me nor make things difficult for me." He said, "Then bury me with them."
[Machine] "I looked into the grave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and also the graves of Abu Bakr and Umar, from Aisha's chamber, and I saw red pebbles on them."
[Machine] "If Umar was a strong fortress in which Islam entered and did not leave, then when Umar was affected, the fortress collapsed and Islam left it and did not enter it. When the believers were mentioned, Umar said, 'Salutations to Umar.'"
[Machine] Ali entered upon Umar while he was praying and said, "May peace be upon you." Then he said, "There is no one whom I love more than to meet Allah with what is in this prayer mat of his."
[Machine] "A voice was heard in the mountain of Tabalah when Umar ibn Al-Khattab was killed. It was a long poem to mourn for Islam. Those who were weeping were on the verge of destruction. The covenant was not fulfilled, the world turned away, and its best turned away. Those who believed in the promise were disappointed. They looked, but saw nothing."
[Machine] (Poem) [The Gentle Sea]
The tears of Joudi are a sign and a lament that never ends
Upon the Imam, the cross, she never ceases to weep
Sorrow has overwhelmed me with the knight, the protector,
On the day of turmoil and reproach
It is the safeguard of religion and the helper
Against the passing of time, the rain of the distressed
And the grieving heart
Tell the people in distress and misery, "Die
When sorrow poured upon us like cups of nations"
And Atika also said [The Long Sea]
Fairooz has startled me with a pearl whose like
Could not be found in any pure white book
For he is tender to the lowest but harsh to the enemy
My brother, a trustworthy support in response to supplication
Whenever he says, "My words do not lie,"
His actions quickly move towards goodness,
Unlike those who turn away from it knowingly
This hadith of Thawri is narrated in Sahihain,
But I have mentioned it here with correct letters,
[Machine] Omar to his companions of Shura: "Their true value is in God, even if they try to abandon it. How can they uphold the truth if they are burdened by it at the point of a sword?" I said, "Do you know this about them and yet do not prevent it?" He said, "If I appoint my successor, I have appointed someone better than me. And if I do not, I have left someone better than me."
