٢٧۔ كِتَابُ مَعْرِفَةِ الصَّحَابَةِ ؓ
[Machine] Al-Mugheerah ibn Shu'bah was also known as Abu Abdullah, the governor of Kufa, and he died there in the year fifty.
«الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ يُكَنَّى أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَلِيَ الْكُوفَةَ وَمَاتَ بِهَا سَنَةَ خَمْسِينَ»
[Machine] The name in English is: Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah ibn Abi 'Amir ibn Mas'ud ibn Mu'attib ibn Malik ibn 'Amr ibn Sa'd ibn 'Amr ibn Qays ibn Shaybah ibn Bakr ibn Hawazin ibn Mansur ibn 'Ikrimah ibn Khasafah ibn Qays.
[Machine] "The messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, described me as Abu Isa."
«كَنَّانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِأَبِي عِيسَى»
[Machine] He is known as the changer of opinion and he was a skilled person who would not find but one of two options in his heart and he would find a solution in one of them. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and stayed with him until he performed the Umrah Al-Hudaybiyah in the month of Dhu al-Qadah in the sixth year of the Hijrah. Al-Mughirah said, "That was the first journey I went out with him in. I used to be with Abu Bakr As-Siddiq and I would adhere to whoever the Prophet ﷺ adhered to." Al-Mughirah witnessed many scenes with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and a delegation from Thaqif came, so the Prophet ﷺ hosted them and honored them, and he sent the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Sufyan bin Harb to Ta'if, and they defeated the Banu Al-Waylah.

[Machine] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, Abu Bakr As-Siddiq sent me to the people of Al-Buhaira. Then I witnessed the Battle of Yamama, and then I witnessed the Muslim conquests in Sham (Greater Syria). After that, I witnessed the Battle of Yarmouk, where I was injured in my eye. Then I witnessed the Battle of Qadisiyyah, and I was appointed as a messenger for Sa'd bin Rustom, and I was appointed as a governor for Umar Ibn Al-Khattab in conquests. I conquered Hamazan, and I was in control of Maysarah, the son of Nu'man, on the day of Nahavand. Umar had written that if Nu'man dies, then the prince would be Hudhayfah, and if Hudhayfah dies, then the prince would be Al-Mughirah. I was the first to establish the Diwan of Basrah (administrative office), and I gathered people to distribute wealth. I was appointed as a governor for Kufah for Umar Ibn Al-Khattab. Umar was killed while I was there, and then I was appointed as a governor for Muawiyah. Adh-Dhahabi did not mention this in his summary."

[Machine] "When Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba threw his ring into the Prophet's ﷺ grave, people should not mention that you descended into the Prophet's ﷺ grave, and you should not inform people that your ring is in his grave. So Ali descended and saw the place, so he took it and returned it to him." Gold has remained silent about it in his summary.

[Machine] Abu Bakrah said, "O Amir, what caused you to leave the seat of power?" He said, "I wanted to speak to you." Abu Bakrah replied, "That is not for you, O Amir. The Amir sits in his house and sends messengers to whoever he wants to talk to." He said, "O Abu Bakrah, there is no harm in what I am doing." So he entered through the smaller door until he reached the door of Umm Jamil, a woman from the Banu Qays tribe. Abu Bakrah said, "I cannot bear this anymore." So he sent a youth to him and told him to climb up to my room and see from the window. The youth went and came back and said, "I found them under the blanket." Abu Bakrah said to the people, "Come with me." So they all got up and followed him. Abu Bakrah started looking and then turned back and said to his brother, "Look." His brother looked and he asked, "What did you see?" His brother replied, "I saw them committing adultery." He asked, "What about you?" His brother looked and said, "I saw them committing adultery while married." Abu Bakrah said, "I bear witness before Allah that you saw it." They all replied, "Yes." Then they returned to their families and Abu Bakrah wrote to Umar ibn al-Khattab describing what he had seen. Umar sent Abu Musa al-Ash'ari as the governor of Basrah, who sent word to al-Mughirah to stay with him for three days as he was the governor of his own self. On the fourth day, they set out together, Abu Bakrah and his witnesses. Umar said, "Show me what you have, Abu Bakrah." Abu Bakrah said, "I bear witness that I saw them committing adultery while married." Then they presented Abu Abdullah, his brother, who said, "I bear witness that I saw them committing adultery while married." Then they presented Shibl ibn Ma'bad al-Bajali and asked him, and he also gave the same testimony. Then they presented Ziyad and Umar asked him, "What did you see?" He replied, "I saw them under the blanket and I heard a loud noise, but I do not know what happened after that." Umar praised Allah and was pleased that al-Mughirah had been saved, and he ordered that the people be punished except for Ziyad. Umar then sent Uthman ibn Affan to Basrah, and he arrived there in the sixteenth year. Uthman died in the nineteenth year, and Uthman had disliked his appointment and used to pray to Allah to save him from it. He fell from his mount and died, may Allah have mercy on him. And what happened with al-Mughirah was from the affairs of al-Mughirah.

[Machine] Egypt was conquered in the year twenty, and in it, the conquest of the Euphrates forcibly took place. It was said that it was opened by Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba, and he was succeeded by Utbah bin Ghazwan. He then went to Umar and commanded Umar to appoint Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba over Basra, and he wrote to him afterwards. So, he was under his command, as well as the command of Umm Jamil al-Qaisiyyah, for as long as he was in power.

[Machine] The following translation is into English: If Al-Bahr al-Taweel said, "I draw dwellings with Mu'ghira, which the people of jinn and mankind recognize, so if you have kept Haman and Pharaoh after us, then know that the owner of the throne will be fair." They approached him and insulted him, and by Allah, I do not know which path he took. The rule of Mu'ghira ibn Shu'ba in al-Kufa was for seven years.

Umar said, 'Does Isa have a father? In the nicknames of the Arabs, we do not conceal the names of Abu Abdullah and Abu Abdul Rahman.' A man said, 'I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ giving him the nickname Al-Mughira.' Umar said, 'Verily, the Prophet ﷺ has forgiven him for his past and future sins, and we are in a state of uncertainty about what will become of us. So, we nickname him after Abu Abdullah.'"

While he was delivering a sermon and praising Ali, Sa'id bin Zaid bin Amr bin Nufayl al-'Adawi, who was sitting next to me, punched me with his hand and said, 'Do you not see what he is saying? Or should I say, these are my witnesses, the nine who are assured of paradise. And if I were to testify about the tenth, I would be truthful. We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Hira, myself, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Talha, Zubayr, Sa'd, and Abdul Rahman bin Awf when the mountain shook.' The Prophet ﷺ then said, 'Hold on to Hira, for you will have nothing but a prophet, a truthful one, or a martyr.'"

I said, "Yes, I have a container of water with me." He dismounted and fulfilled his need, then he came to me and asked, "Do you need to fulfill your need?" I said, "No." He washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth three times, sniffed water into his nose three times, washed his face three times, and then he wanted to take out his arms, but he was wearing a tight woolen garment, so he couldn't take out his arms from it. He took out his hands from under the garment and then washed his arms three times, wiped over his head, and wiped over his slippers. Then we continued on and caught up with the group, and Abdullah bin Awf led them in prayer. I wanted to call the adhan for him in the place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , but he prevented me. So we joined the prayer, and then we performed the second prayer." This narration is a strange and authentic narration due to the weakness found in its context, as stated by Al-Dhahabi in his summary.

So take from our food what you need, for we are a people who follow the Zoroastrian religion and we abhor killing you. You have defiled our land. We did not come for food, but we came to fight against your fighters and take your children captive. As for the food that you have mentioned, we swear by Allah that we do not find enough food to satisfy ourselves, and sometimes we do not find a drop of water. So we came to your land and we found plenty of food and plenty of water. By Allah, we will never leave it as long as we live or as long as you live.' Al-Ilaaj spoke in Persian and said, 'He is telling the truth.' He said, 'And may your eye be restored to health.' Then his eye was healed from that day. This is a strange and Sahih hadith that has not been narrated by anyone else." Sahih.
