27.7 [Machine] The Killing of Amir al-Mu'minin Uthman ibn Affan

٢٧۔٧ ذِكْرُ مَقْتَلِ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ ؓ

[Machine] And the first thing that a scholar cannot be ignorant of is the knowledge of the reason that led to this, which is the matter of Abdullah bin Saad bin Abi Sarh, who is the cousin of Uthman bin Affan, and Walid bin Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt, who is the brother of Uthman's mother. As for Abdullah bin Saad bin Abi Sarh, the authentic narrations speak that he was a scribe for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , but his treachery in writing became apparent, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dismissed him. He then apostatized from Islam and joined the people of Makkah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ allowed shedding his blood on the day of the conquest, but he was not killed until Uthman came with him, and he had reconsidered Islam. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted him safety and spared his life.

وَأَوَّلُ مَا لَا يَسَعُ الْعَالِمَ جَهْلُهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْوُقُوفُ عَلَى السَّبَبِ الَّذِي حَدَثَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ شَأْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَرْحٍ وَهُوَ ابْنُ خَالَةِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ، وَالْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُعَيْطٍ، وَهُوَ أَخُو عُثْمَانَ لِأُمِّهِ، فَأَمَّا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَرْحٍ فَإِنَّ الْأَخْبَارَ الصَّحِيحَةَ نَاطِقَةٌ بِأَنَّهُ كَانَ كَاتِبًا لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَظَهَرَتْ خِيَانَاتُهُ فِي الْكِتَابَةِ، فَعَزَلَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ، فَارْتَدَّ عَنِ الْإِسْلَامِ، وَلَحِقَ بِأَهْلِ مَكَّةَ، فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَبَاحَ دَمَهُ يَوْمَ الْفَتْحِ فَلَمْ يُقْتَلْ حَتَّى جَاءَ بِهِ عُثْمَانُ، وَقَدْ رَاجَعَ الْإِسْلَامَ فَأَمَّنَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَحَقَنَ دَمَهُ

قَالَ الْحَاكِمُ «وَلَمَّا اسْتَوْلَى عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَلَى مِصْرَ أَعْقَبَ وَمِنْهُمْ عَمْرُو بْنُ سَوَّادٍ السَّرْحِيُّ صَاحِبُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ وَأَمَّا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُعَيْطٍ فَإِنَّهُ وُلِدَ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَحُمِلَ إِلَيْهِ فَحُرِمَ بَرَكَتُهُ ﷺ»

[Machine] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Mecca, the people of Mecca would bring their children to him, and he would wipe his hands over their heads and pray for them. My father took me to him, and I was very handsome in appearance. However, he did not wipe his hands on my head or touch me. The only reason for that was that my mother had created me in a different way. Ahmad ibn Hanbal said, 'It has been narrated that he embraced Islam on that day, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not touch or pray for him. The appearance does not prevent prayer, and this is certainly true for a child in the action of someone else. However, he was prevented by the blessing of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ due to the previous knowledge that Allah the Almighty had regarding him. And Allah knows best.'"

«لَمَّا فَتَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَكَّةَ جَعَلَ أَهْلُ مَكَّةَ يَأْتُونَ بِصِبْيَانِهِمْ فَيَمْسَحُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى رُءُوسِهِمْ وَيَدْعُو لَهُمْ فَخَرَجَ بِي أَبِي إِلَيْهِ وَإِنِّي مُطَيَّبٌ بِالْخَلُوقِ فَلَمْ يَمْسَحْ عَلَى رَأْسِي وَلَمْ يَمَسَّنِي وَلَمْ يَمْنَعْهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِلَّا أَنَّ أُمِّي خَلَّقَتْنِي بِالْخَلُوقِ فَلَمْ يَمَسَّنِي مِنْ أَجْلِ الْخَلُوقِ» قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ «وَقَدْ رُوِيَ أَنَّهُ أَسْلَمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ فَتَقَذَّرَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يَمَسَّهُ وَلَمْ يَدْعُ لَهُ وَالْخَلُوقُ لَا يَمْنَعُ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ لَا جُرْمَ أَيْضًا لِطِفْلٍ فِي فِعْلِ غَيْرِهِ لَكِنَّهُ مُنِعَ بَرَكَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِسَابِقِ عِلْمِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى فِيهِ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ»

[Machine] "And I swear by Allah, I do not know if I dressed appropriately after you or have I become foolish after you? He said, "By Allah, I did not dress inappropriately after you nor did I become foolish after you, but the people have asserted their authority over you." He said, "You have spoken the truth." (This excerpt has been omitted by Al-Dhahabi due to its weakness.)  

الحاكم:٤٥٤٧حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ رَجَاءٍ السُّدِّيُّ ثنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ ثنا الْهَيْثَمُ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ حَدَّثَنِي طَارِقُ بْنُ شِهَابٍ الْأَحْمَسِيُّ قَالَ اسْتَعْمَلَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ الْوَلِيدَ بْنَ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُعَيْطٍ وَكَانَ أَخَاهُ لِأُمِّهِ عَلَى الْكُوفَةِ وَأَرْضِهَا وَبِهَا سَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ فَقَدِمَ عَلَى سَعْدٍ فَأَجْلَسَهُ مَعَهُ وَلَا يَعْلَمُ بِعِلْمِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبَا وَهْبٍ مَا أَقْدَمَكَ؟ قَالَ «قَدِمْتُ عَامِلًا» قَالَ عَلَى أَيِّ شَيْءٍ؟ قَالَ «عَلَى عَمَلِكَ» فَقَالَ

وَاللَّهِ مَا أَدْرِي أَكِسْتَ بَعْدِي أَمْ حَمُقْتُ بَعْدَكَ؟ فَقَالَ «وَاللَّهِ مَا كِسْتُ بَعْدَكَ وَلَا حَمُقْتَ بَعْدِي وَلَكِنَّ الْقَوْمَ اسْتَأْثَرُوا عَلَيْكَ بِسُلْطَانِهِمْ» فَقَالَ صَدَقْتَحذفه الذهبي من التلخيص لضعفه

[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: "Whoever survives three things, then they have achieved salvation." They asked, "What are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "My death, the killing of a just ruler who defends the truth, and the appearance of the Antichrist." This hadith has a sound chain of narration and it was not reported in a Sahih collection.  

الحاكم:٤٥٤٨حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ الْمِصْرِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي وَشُعَيْبُ بْنُ اللَّيْثِ قَالَا ثنا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ لَقِيطٍ التُّجِيبِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حَوَالَةَ الْأَسَدِيِّ

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ نَجَا مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ فَقَدْ نَجَا» قَالُوا مَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «مَوْتِي وَقَتْلِ خَلِيفَةٍ مُصْطَبِرٍ بِالْحَقِّ يُعْطِيهِ وَمِنَ الدَّجَّالِ» صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ صحيح

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, the lifespan of Islam will be for thirty-five years, or (sixty-five years), or (seventy-seven years). If they are destroyed, then the way of those who were destroyed will prevail. And if they remain, their religion will remain for seventy years (after the completion of those years)." Umar asked, "O Prophet of Allah, by what has passed or by what remains?" He ﷺ said, "No, rather by what remains."  

الحاكم:٤٥٤٩أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ دُهَيْمٍ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ بِالْكُوفَةِ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَازِمِ بْنِ أَبِي غَرَزَةَ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا شَرِيكٌ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ نَاجِيَةَ قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ رَحَى الْإِسْلَامِ سَتَدُورُ بَعْدَ خَمْسٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ أَوْ سِتٍّ وَثَلَاثِينَ أَوْ سَبْعٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ سَنَةً فَإِنْ يَهْلِكُوا فَسَبِيلُ مَنْ هَلَكَ وَإِنْ بَقِيَ لَهُمْ دِينُهُمْ يَقُمْ سَبْعِينَ» قَالَ عُمَرُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ بِمَا مَضَى أَوْ بِمَا بَقِيَ قَالَ «لَا بَلْ بِمَا بَقِيَ»  

هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ عَلَى شَرْطِ مُسْلِمٍ وَفِيهِ الْبَيَانُ الْوَاضِحُ لِمَقْتَلِ عُثْمَانَ كَمَا قَدَّمْتُ ذِكْرَهُ مِنْ تَارِيخِ الْمَقْتَلِ سَنَةَ خَمْسٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ على شرط مسلم

[Machine] "Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Muayt ibn Amr ibn Umayyah ibn Abd Shams was the brother of Uthman through their mother. Their mother was Arwa bint Kariz ibn Rabiah ibn Abd Shams, and her mother was Umm Hakim al-Bayda bint Abd al-Muttalib ibn Abd Manaf, the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Prophet ﷺ ordered the killing of Uqbah ibn Abi Muayt upon his return. During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Al-Walid was a man who was known as Abu Wahb."  

الحاكم:٤٥٥٠حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ بَالَوَيْهِ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْحَرْبِيُّ ثنا مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ قَالَ

«الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُعَيْطِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ شَمْسٍ وَكَانَ أَخَا عُثْمَانَ لِأُمِّهِ وَأُمُّهُمَا أَرْوَى بِنْتُ كَرِيزِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ شَمْسٍ وَأُمُّهَا أُمُّ حَكِيمٍ الْبَيْضَاءُ بِنْتُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ عَمَّةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَتَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عُقْبَةَ بْنَ أَبِي مُعَيْطٍ فِي رُجُوعِهِ وَكَانَ الْوَلِيدُ فِي زَمَنِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَجُلًا وَكَانَ يُكَنَّى أَبَا وَهْبٍ»

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I saw a righteous man last night, that Abu Bakr holds onto the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Umar holds onto the hand of Abu Bakr, and Uthman holds onto the hand of Umar." When we stood up from being near the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we said, "As for the righteous man, it is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And as for what was mentioned of them holding onto each other's hand, they are the leaders of this matter that Allah sent His Prophet with." Ad-Darimi said, "I heard Yahya ibn Ma'in saying that Muhammad ibn Harb narrated this hadith with its chain of transmission, and people narrate it from Az-Zuhri as Mursal. It is actually Amr ibn Aban and Aban ibn Uthman's son called Amr."  

الحاكم:٤٥٥١حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ الْفَقِيهُ وَأَبُو الْحَسَنِ الْعَنَزِيُّ قَالَا ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الدَّارِمِيُّ ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْجُرْجُسِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ عَنِ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبَانَ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أُرِيَ اللَّيْلَةَ رَجُلٌ صَالِحٌ أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ نِيطَ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنِيطَ عُمَرُ بِأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَنِيطَ عُثْمَانُ بِعُمَرَ» فَلَمَّا قُمْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُلْنَا أَمَّا الرَّجُلُ الصَّالِحُ فَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَمَّا مَا ذُكِرَ مِنْ نَوْطِ بَعْضِهِمْ بِبَعْضٍ فَهُمْ وُلَاةُ هَذَا الْأَمْرِ الَّذِي بَعَثَ اللَّهُ بِهِ نَبِيَّهُ ﷺ قَالَ الدَّارِمِيُّ فَسَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ مَعِينٍ يَقُولُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ بِسَنَدِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ وَالنَّاسُ يُحَدِّثُونَ بِهِ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ مُرْسَلًا إِنَّمَا هُوَ عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبَانَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لِأَبَانَ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ ابْنٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ عَمْرٌو

[Machine] "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioning a trial that would cause poverty. Then, a masked man dressed in a garment passed by him. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'This person today is on the right guidance.' I approached him and behold, it was Uthman ibn Affan. I turned towards him and asked, 'Is it you?' He replied, 'Yes.'"  

الحاكم:٤٥٥٢حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ صَالِحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْبَجَلِيُّ ثنا عَفَّانُ ثنا وُهَيْبٌ ثنا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَشْعَثِ عَنْ مُرَّةَ بْنِ كَعْبٍ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ فِتْنَةً فَقَرَّ بِهَا فَمَرَّ بِهِ رَجُلٌ مُقَنَّعٌ فِي ثَوْبٍ فَقَالَ «هَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْهُدَى» فَقُمْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ فَأَقْبَلْتُ إِلَيْهِ بِوَجْهِهِ فَقُلْتُ هُوَ هَذَا؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»  

هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ عَلَى شَرْطِ الشَّيْخَيْنِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ على شرط البخاري ومسلم

[Machine] Uthman came to the Prophet ﷺ with a thousand dinars when he prepared the army of Al-Usrah. Uthman emptied it in the Prophet's chamber. The Prophet ﷺ kept flipping the coins and saying, "Uthman's actions after this day will not harm him." He repeated this several times.

جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِأَلْفِ دِينَارٍ حِينَ جَهَّزَ جَيْشَ الْعُسْرَةِ فَفَرَّغَهَا عُثْمَانُ فِي حِجْرِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ فَجَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُقَلِّبُهَا وَيَقُولُ «مَا ضَرَّ عُثْمَانُ مَا عَمِلَ بَعْدَ هَذَا الْيَوْمِ» قَالَهَا مِرَارًا  

«هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ» صحيح

«هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ» صحيح

[Machine] I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when Uthman ibn Affan approached. When he neared, the Prophet said, "O Uthman, you will be killed while reciting Surah Al-Baqarah, and your blood will spill on the verse, 'And Allah is sufficient for you against them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.'" (Quran 2:137). And on the Day of Resurrection, you will be raised as a leader over every oppressor. The people of the East and the West will envy you, and you will intercede for the number of Rabia and Mudar.

قَالَ الْحَاكِمُ «قَدْ ذَكَرْتُ الْأَخْبَارَ الْمَسَانِيدَ فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ فِي كِتَابِ مَقْتَلِ عُثْمَانَ فَلَمُ اسْتَحْسِنْ ذِكْرَهَا عَنْ آخِرِهَا فِي هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ فَإِنَّ فِي هَذَا الْقَدْرِ كِفَايَةٌ فَأَمَّا الَّذِي ادَّعَتْهُ الْمُبْتَدِعَةُ مِنْ مَعُونَةِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ عَلَى قَتْلِهِ فَإِنَّهُ كَذِبٌ وَزُورٌ فَقَدْ تَوَاتَرَتِ الْأَخْبَارُ بِخِلَافِهِ» كذب بحت

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Do you not feel ashamed before the angels from whom you feel ashamed?' And I swear by Allah, I feel ashamed before Allah to pledge allegiance while Uthman, a murdered man, lies on the ground without being buried yet.' So they left me alone. When Uthman was buried and people came back to me, they asked me for allegiance. I said, 'O Allah, I am apprehensive about what I am about to do.' Then determination came, and I pledged allegiance. They said, 'O Amir al-Mu'minin, it was as if my heart had been split open.' I said, 'O Allah, take from me for Uthman until You are pleased.'"

He turned it over and screamed, then said, 'Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.' Quraish rejoiced and Abu Bakr's father asked him, 'Who is it, my son?' He replied, 'It is Muhammad ibn Talha ibn Ubaydullah.' His father said, 'Indeed, by Allah, he was a righteous young man, then he became sad and sorrowful.' Al-Hasan said to him, 'O father, I used to dissuade you from going on this journey, but so-and-so and so-and-so convinced you against my advice.' He replied, 'That is true, my son, and if I could have chosen, I would have preferred to die twenty years before this.' Muhammad ibn Hattab said, 'I stood up and said, O Amir al-Mu'minin (Commander of the Faithful), we are coming to Medina, and the people are asking us about Uthman, what should we say about him?' Ali ibn Abi Talib said to Ammar ibn Yasir and Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr, 'You both speak.' They spoke and Ali ibn Abi Talib said, 'O Ammar and Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr, you both claim that Uthman seized power and mismanaged the caliphate, and by Allah, you have also done wrong and will be held accountable for it. You will present yourselves before a fair judge who will pass judgment between you.' Then he said to Muhammad ibn Hattab, 'When you arrive in Medina and people ask you about Uthman, say, 'By Allah, he was among those who believed and did righteous deeds, then became cautious and believed, then became cautious and did good deeds. And Allah loves those who do good. So let the believers put their trust in Allah.'"

الحاكم:٤٥٦٣حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُزَنِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ نَجْدَةَ الْقُرَشِيُّ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْقُمِّيُّ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ عَنْتَرَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا بِالْخَوَرْنَقِ وَهُوَ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ وَعِنْدَهُ أَبَانُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا وَأَبُوكَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ قَالَ

اللَّهُ ﷻ {وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِمْ مِنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَانًا عَلَى سُرَرٍ مُتَقَابِلِينَ} [الحجر 47] سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

[Machine] "That Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan, the wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , sent a message to Abdullah ibn Abi Rabiah, the brother of Ayash ibn Abi Rabiah, informing him of the killing of Uthman. She sent him the shirt in which he was killed, and his clothes were stained with his blood. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ received the news, he went out to the people, ascended the pulpit, informed them of his killing, and spread his shirt over the pulpit. He wept, and the people wept with him. He began saying, 'A matter has come to me that brings distress to the people, brings tears to the eyes, and brings humility to life. It brings tears to the noble noses. The leader of the believers has suffered this calamity, and this calamity is like the breaking of mountains. It has caused a commotion among the people of Medina, a group of whom are murderers, and others who have abandoned him. I will mourn for Abu Amr with every lamentation and eulogy known to me, with tears flowing down my cheeks. I will not sleep until these people are arrested and the guilty ones are brought to justice.' He further said, 'I am not settled wherever I reside in a town while you are killed,' He then proceeded with those who were with him. When he approached Makkah, he fell from his riding animal and died."  

الحاكم:٤٥٦٤أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ الْقُرَشِيُّ بِالسَّاوَةِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَغْرَاءَ سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ بَشَّارٍ يَذْكُرُ عَنْ شُيُوخِهِ

أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ زَوْجَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَجَّهْتُ رَسُولًا إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ أَخِي عَيَّاشِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ يُخْبِرُهُ بِقَتْلِ عُثْمَانَ وَوَجَّهْتُ إِلَيْهِ بِقَمِيصِهِ الَّذِي قُتِلَ فِيهِ وَأَثْوَابُهُ مُضَرَّجَاتٌ بِدَمِهِ فَلَمَّا وَرَدَ عَلَيْهِ الرَّسُولُ خَرَجَ إِلَى النَّاسِ وَصَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ وَأَخْبَرَهُمْ بِقَتْلِهِ وَنَشَرَ قَمِيصَهُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَبَكَى وَبَكَى النَّاسُ مَعَهُ وَأَنْشَأَ يَقُولُ « [البحر الطويل] أَتَانِيَ أَمَرٌ فِيهِ لِلنَّاسِ غُمَّةٌ وَفِيهِ بُكَاءٌ لِلْعُيُونِ طَوِيلُ وَفِيهِ مَتَاعٌ لِلْحَيَاةِ بِذِلَّةٍ وَفِيهِ اجْتِدَاعٌ لِلْأُنُوفِ أَصِيلُ مُصَابُ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَهَذِهِ يُعَادُ لَهَا شُمُّ الْجِبَالِ تَزُولُ تَدَاعَتْ عَلَيْهِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ عُصْبَةٌ فَرِيقَانِ مِنْهُمْ قَاتِلٌ وَخَذُولُ سَأَبْكِي أَبَا عَمْرٍو بِكُلِّ مُهَنَّدٍ وَبِيضٍ لَهَا فِي الدَّارِعِينَ هَلِيلُ وَلَا نَوْمَ حَتَّى يُسْجَنَ الْقَوْمُ بِالْقَنَا وَيَشْفَى مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الْغُوَاةِ غَلِيلُ وَلَسْتُ مُقِيمًا مَا حَيِيتُ بِبَلْدَةٍ أَجُرُّ بِهَا ذَيْلًا وَأَنْتَ قَتِيلُ» قَالَ فَخَرَجَ بِمَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ فَلَمَّا قَرُبَ مِنْ مَكَّةَ سَقَطَ عَنْ رَاحِلَتِهِ فَمَاتَحذفه الذهبي من التلخيص

[Machine] And he said to the people of the house, "Do not kill them. May Allah forgive every person who did not fight. So how did you see Allah pour animosity and hatred upon them after communication? And how did you see good turn away from people like the wind turns away the caravans?" Al-Dhahabi remained silent about this in his summary.

وَقَالَ لِأَهْلِ الدَّارِ لَا تَقْتُلُوهُمْ عَفَا اللَّهُ عَنْ كُلِّ امْرِئٍ لَمْ يُقَاتِلْ فَكَيْفَ رَأَيْتَ اللَّهَ صَبَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَدَاوَةَ وَالْبَغْضَاءَ بَعْدَ التَّوَاصُلِ وَكَيْفَ رَأَيْتَ الْخَيْرَ أَدْبَرَ بَعْدَهُ عَنِ النَّاسِ إِدْبَارَ الرِّيَاحِ الْحَوَافِلِ» سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

[Machine] Concerning Uthman, what was written on the seal of his ring? He said, "Surely, written on the seal of his ring was a sincere intent, 'O Allah, grant me a blessed life and make my death as a martyr.' By Allah, he indeed lived a blessed life and died as a martyr." Al-Dhahabi excluded it from his summary due to its weakness.

عَنْ عُثْمَانَ مَا كَانَ عَلَى فَصِّ خَاتَمِهِ؟ قَالَ لَقَدْ كَانَ عَلَى فَصِّ خَاتَمِهِ مِنْ صِدْقِ نِيَّتِهِ اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِنِي سَعِيدًا وَأَمِتْنِي شَهِيدًا فَوَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ عَاشَ سَعِيدًا وَمَاتَ شَهِيدًا حذفه الذهبي من التلخيص لضعفه

[Machine] "Ali said, 'Live with me or be silent, for by Allah, you will not ask me about anything except that I will inform you.' So Zaid said, 'I adjure you by Allah, did you kill Uthman?' So Ali remained silent for a while, then he said, 'By the One who split the seed and created the breeze, I did not kill him nor did I command his killing.' Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary."

عَلِيٌّ «اسْكُنُوا أَوِ اسْكُتُوا فَوَاللَّهِ لَا تَسْأَلُونِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا أَخْبَرْتُكُمْ» فَقَالَ زَيْدٌ أَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ أَنْتَ قَتَلْتَ عُثْمَانَ؟ فَأَطْرَقَ عَلِيٌّ سَاعَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ «وَالَّذِي فَلَقَ الْحَبَّةَ وَبَرَأَ النَّسَمَةَ مَا قَتَلْتُهُ وَلَا أَمَرْتُ بِقَتْلِهِ» سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

[Machine] "And Al-Walid ibn Uqbah [Al-Bahr Al-Tawil] said: Indeed, the best of people after their Prophet is the killer of Al-Tujibi, who came from Egypt. By Al-Tujibi, he meant the killer of Uthman, as Al-Dhahabi stated in summarizing it."  

الحاكم:٤٥٦٨أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْخُرَاسَانِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَوْحِ الْمَدَايِنِيُّ ثنا شَبَابَةُ بْنُ سَوَّارٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ ثنا كِنَانَةُ الْعَدَوِيُّ قَالَ «كُنْتُ فِيمَنْ حَاصَرَ عُثْمَانَ» قَالَ قُلْتُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ قَتَلَهُ؟ قَالَ لَا قَتَلَهُ جَبَلَةُ بْنُ الْأَيْهَمِ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ مِصْرَ قَالَ وَقِيلَ قَتَلَهُ كَبِيرَةُ السَّكُونِيُّ فَقُتِلَ فِي الْوَقْتِ وَقِيلَ قَتَلَهُ كِنَانَةُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ التُّجِيبِيُّ وَلَعَلَّهُمُ اشْتَرَكُوا فِي قَتْلِهِ لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ

وَقَالَ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ [البحر الطويل] أَلَا إِنَّ خَيْرَ النَّاسِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهِمْ قَتِيلُ التُّجِيبِيِّ الَّذِي جَاءَ مِنْ مِصْرِ « يَعْنِي بِالتَّجِيبِيِّ قَاتِلَ عُثْمَانَ سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

[Machine] “He proposed to his daughter, but she rejected him. He informed the Prophet ﷺ about this. When Umar went to the Prophet ﷺ, he said, 'O Umar, should I guide you towards a marriage that is better for you than with Uthman, and I guide Uthman towards a marriage that is better for him than with you?' Umar said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Marry my daughter and I will marry your daughter to Uthman.'"  

الحاكم:٤٥٦٩أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الصَّفَّارُ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَيْدَانَ عُبَيْدُ بْنُ طُفَيْلٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي رِبْعِيُّ بْنُ حِرَاشٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ

أَنَّهُ خَطَبَ إِلَى عُمَرَ ابْنَتَهُ فَرَدَّهُ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَمَّا أَنْ رَاحَ إِلَيْهِ عُمَرُ قَالَ «يَا عُمَرُ أَلَا أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى خَتَنٍ خَيْرٍ لَكَ مِنْ عُثْمَانَ وَأَدُلُّ عُثْمَانَ عَلَى خَيْرٍ لَهُ مِنْكَ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «زَوِّجْنِي ابْنَتَكَ وَأُزَوِّجُ عُثْمَانَ ابْنَتِي»  

هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ

[Machine] Uthman bin Affan bought the garden from the Prophet peace be upon him, twice the price of its value, where he dug the well of Maunah and where he prepared the army of Usrah. This narration is authentic and was not mentioned by Isa bin Musa, Abu Dawood and others weakened it.  

الحاكم:٤٥٧٠حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَمْشَاذٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَنْدَهِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثنا بَكْرُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ ثنا عِيسَى بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ الْبَجَلِيُّ ثنا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

اشْتَرَى عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ الْجَنَّةَ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مَرَّتَيْنِ بَيْعَ الْحَقِّ حَيْثُ حَفَرَ بِئْرَ مَعُونَةَ وَحَيْثُ جَهَّزَ جَيْشَ الْعُسْرَةِ «صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ» عيسى بن المسيب ضعفه أبو داود وغيره

[Machine] "To travel to Sham (Syria) towards Siffin and the palm trees gathered until they entered upon Ashtr's house. He said, 'Is there anything in this house except for my palm trees?' They replied, 'No.' He said, 'Indeed, this nation has inclined towards the goodness of its people, and they killed him' meaning Uthman. 'And we fought the people of Basra due to a pledge that we interpreted differently. And you are heading towards a people who do not have a pledge with us, so let every man consider where he places his sword.'"  

الحاكم:٤٥٧١حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ فُرَاتٍ الْقَزَّازِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عُمَيْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ أَرَادَ عَلِيٌّ

أَنْ يَسِيرَ إِلَى الشَّامِ إِلَى صِفِّينَ وَاجْتَمَعَتِ النَّخَعِ حَتَّى دَخَلُوا عَلَى الْأَشْتَرِ بَيْتَهُ فَقَالَ «هَلْ فِي الْبَيْتِ إِلَّا نَخَعِيٌّ؟» قَالُوا لَا قَالَ «إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ عَمَدَتْ إِلَى خَيْرِ أَهْلِهَا فَقَتَلُوهُ يَعْنِي عُثْمَانَ وَإِنَّا قَاتَلْنَا أَهْلَ الْبَصْرَةِ بِبَيْعَةٍ تَأَوَّلْنَا عَنْهُ وَإِنَّكُمْ تَسِيرُونَ إِلَى قَوْمٍ لَيْسَ لَنَا عَلَيْهِمْ بَيْعَةٌ فَلْيَنْظُرْ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ أَيْنَ يَضَعُ سَيْفَهُ»  

هَذَا حَدِيثٌ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ سَنَدٌ فَإِنَّهٌ مُعَقَّدٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ فِي هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ على شرط مسلم
