27. Book of the Companions
[Machine] "About his elders, they said, 'The name of Abu Dujana is Simak bin Kharasha bin Lawdhan bin Abd Wadd bin Zaid bin Tha'labah bin Al-Khazraj. He is the brother of the Messenger of Allah Muhammad ﷺ through breastfeeding. He witnessed the battles of Badr and Uhud and remained steadfast with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He pledged his allegiance to him until death. He also witnessed the Battle of Yamama. He was among those who participated in the killing of Musaylimah. Abu Dujana was martyred on that day.'"
[Machine] On the day of Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ took a sword and his companions gathered around him. He said, "Who will take this sword?" They extended their hands, saying, "This is me" and "This is me." He then said, "Who will take it rightfully?" The people hesitated and remained silent. Then, Simak bin Kharasha Abu Dujana stepped forward and said, "I will take it rightfully." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ handed it to him, and that day, it was used effectively against the pagans.
[Machine] "During the Battle of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ presented a sword and asked, 'Who will take this sword in its right?' I stood up and said, 'I will, O Messenger of Allah.' But he turned away from me. Then he asked again, 'Who will take this sword in its right?' And again, I said, 'I will, O Messenger of Allah.' But he turned away from me once more. This happened for a third time. Then Abu Dujanah, also known as Simak ibn Kharsha, stood up and said, 'I will take it, O Messenger of Allah, in its right.' He asked him, 'What is its right?' Abu Dujanah replied, 'To not use it to kill a Muslim or to flee from a disbeliever.' So the Prophet handed the sword to him. Whenever he prepared for battle, he had a distinguishing mark on his arm. I said to myself, 'Let me observe him today and see how he behaves.' He would strike with the sword and it would not spare anything in its way until he reached a group of women on a mountain slope. Among them was a woman, who said, 'We are the daughters of Tariq, we walk on embers. If you accept, we embrace, and if you turn away, we part with separation.' Abu Dujanah then turned with the sword towards a woman to strike her, but he stopped himself. As the battle became fierce, I said to him, 'I have witnessed all your actions up until now. When you raised the sword over the woman, you did not strike her.' He replied, 'By Allah, I honored the sword of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and did not want to use it to kill a woman.' This hadith has a sound chain of narrators, but it has not been formally published."
