[Machine] "Bilal ibn Rabah, the freed slave of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, known as Abu Abdullah, was born in Surat and died in Damascus in the year twenty. He was buried near the Small Gate in the cemetery of Damascus, at the age of sixty-six."

hakim:5230Shuʿayb b. Ṭalḥah

[Machine] I heard Shu'ayb ibn Talhah saying, "Bilal was the servant of Abu Bakr, and Shu'ayb was more knowledgeable about Bilal's birth."

hakim:5231Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz > Makḥūl

[Machine] Someone told me that whoever saw Bilal would describe him as a man who was very dark-skinned, thin and tall. He had abundant light hair, with fine eyebrows. He had a lot of freckles and his face never changed. Bilal witnessed Badr, Uhud, the trench, and all the other important events alongside the Messenger of Allah, and he was as close to the Messenger of Allah as Ubaydah ibn al-Harith ibn Abdul-Muttalib.

[Machine] "And indeed, he witnessed the Battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He was a black man by birth, whom Abu Bakr bought from Umayyah ibn Khalaf. Abu Bakr gave him as a gift, and in return, he took Bilal. His mother's name was Hamamah. Both he and his mother became Muslim. He was known as Abu Abdullah. He passed away in Damascus in the year twenty (AH) or it is said eighteen."

[Machine] I passed by Bilal while he was in the mosque, so I said, "O Abu Abdullah, what keeps you seated?" He replied, "I am waiting for the sunrise."

hakim:5236Abū Isḥāq

[Machine] It is said that Umar ibn Abdullah al-Madani is a mawla of Ufrata.

[Machine] "Bilal had a brother who belonged to the Arabs and claimed to be one of them. He proposed to marry a woman from the Arab tribe, and they said, 'If Bilal approves, we will marry you to her.' Bilal attended and said, 'I am Bilal ibn Rabah, and this is my brother. He has a bad character and religion. If you want to marry him, go ahead, and if you want to reject, feel free to do so.' They said, 'Whoever his brother is, we will marry him.' They married him and it is a valid narration, without any contradiction. This is the story of Bilal's brother."

hakim:5238Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb > Abū al-Bakhtarī ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. Shākir

"The first people to declare their Islam publicly were seven: The Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr, 'Ammar and his mother Sumayyah, Suhaib, Bilal and Miqdad. With regard to the Messenger of Allah, Allah protected him through his paternal uncle Abu Talib. With regard to Abu Bakr, Allah protected him through his people. As for the rest, the idolators seized them and made them wear coats of chain-mail and exposed them to the intense heat of the sun. There was none of them who did not do what they wanted them to do, except for Bilal. He did not care what happened to him for the sake of Allah, and his people did not care what happened to him. Then they gave him to the children who took him around in the streets of Makkah while he was saying, 'Ahad, Ahad (One, One).'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 150)

[Machine] The age of "Abu Bakr our master and our master set him free," meaning that Bilal is true and it has not been rejected.

hakim:5240Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyá

[Machine] Umar mentioned the virtue of Abu Bakr and started describing his qualities. Then he said, "And this is our master Bilal, a good deed from the good deeds of Abu Bakr." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.

[Machine] "Abu Bakr freed seven people who were being tortured for the sake of Allah Almighty, including Bilal and Amr ibn Fuhayrah." This hadeeth is authenticated according to the conditions of both the Shaykhs (referring to Al-Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not include it in their collections.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are four foremost individuals: I am foremost among the Arabs, Salman is foremost among the Persians, Bilal is foremost among the Ethiopians, and Suhaib is foremost among the Romans. Imarah ibn Zayd is also regarded as foremost by virtue of his distinction from Thabit." This hadith was omitted by Al-Dhahabi due to its weakness in his summary.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What a good man Bilal is; he is the leader of the Mu'adhdhins (those who call for prayer). No one follows him except for the Mu'adhdhins. And the Mu'adhdhins will be the tallest people on the Day of Resurrection." This statement was specifically mentioned by Husam and deleted by al-Dhahabi due to its weakness in the summary.

[Machine] One day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up and called Bilal. He said, "O Bilal, how did you surpass me to Paradise last night? I heard the rustling of your footsteps in front of me, so I followed it until I reached a square-golden palace surrounded by a balcony. I asked, 'Whose palace is this?' They replied, 'It belongs to a man from the Quraysh.' I asked, 'Am I from the Quraysh?' They said, 'No, it belongs to Umar ibn Al-Khattab.' Then Bilal said, 'O Messenger of Allah, whenever I hear the call to prayer, I never fail to perform two Rak'ahs (units of prayer). And whenever any impurity comes upon me, I always perform ablution.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'By following this practice, you have fulfilled the conditions of both Bukhari and Muslim.'"
