27. Book of the Companions
[Machine] I narrate on the authority of Musa ibn Awn ibn Abdullah ibn Awn, who narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud ibn Kahil ibn Habib ibn Tamir ibn Makhzum ibn Sahilah ibn Kahil ibn Al-Harith ibn Taym ibn Saad ibn Hudhayl ibn Mudrikah ibn Ilyas ibn Mudar ibn Nizar.
[Machine] "Abdullah ibn Mas'ud ibn al-Harith ibn Shamkh ibn Makhzum ibn Kahil ibn al-Harith ibn Saad ibn Hudhayl from the allies of Bani Zuhrah." Al-Waqidi has disagreed with them regarding this lineage.
[Machine] Ammar ibn Yasir, may Allah send blessings upon him, was buried in Al-Baqi' at night. He was sixty-two years old.
[Machine] "That the Prophet (pbuh) called him Abu Abdullah but he did not have any children."
[Machine] The mother of Abdullah ibn Mas'ood is Umm Abd, the daughter of Abd ibn Al-Harith ibn Zuhrah.
[Machine] I heard Yahya bin Ma'in saying: The kunya of Abdullah bin Masud is Abu Abdul Rahman.
[Machine] "I have seen myself as the sixth of sixty [Muslims] on earth, none of whom are other than us." It is a sound chain of transmission and it hasn't been reported correctly.
[Machine] The translation of the given text in Arabic into English is:
"And among those who migrated to Abyssinia before the departure of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib and Abdullah ibn Mas'ud was Urwah."
[Machine] Abdullah bin Mas'ood died in the city, and Zubayr bin Al-Awwam prayed on him.
[Machine] "Between Zubayr ibn al-Awwam and Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, the reliable chain of narration of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and it has been authenticated."
[Machine] Abdullah used to visit him every year, but he would not speak about the Prophet ﷺ. So one day he narrated a hadith from the Prophet ﷺ, and it saddened him, causing sweat to trickle down his forehead, and he said, "Something similar to this or close to it."
"My brother and I arrived from Yemen, and we did not see a period except that we thought 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud was a man from the people of the house of the Prophet ﷺ, due to what we would see of him entering, and his mother's entering, upon the Prophet ﷺ." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3806)
[Machine] "That the son of the mother of Abd is among the closest to them and a means to Allah on the Day of Judgment."
[Machine] "When Abdullah rested his eyes, I would hear a sound from him, like the buzzing sound of bees, until dawn." Al-Dhahabi did not mention it in his summary.
[Machine] "Abdullah used to give us a sermon every Thursday standing on his feet, and he would speak with words that we eagerly desired to hear." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about summarizing it.
[Machine] "I read in the book of 'Umar to the people of Yemen and Kufa, 'Afterwards, you are the head of the Arabs and its skull, and you are my arrow that I shoot if anything comes from here and here. I have sent to you Abdullah, chosen him for you and preferred you over myself.'" Al-Dhahabi did not mention it in the summary."
[Machine] "I say about him what they have said, that he is the best of those who have recited the Quran and has permitted what is lawful and forbidden what is forbidden. He is a scholar in religion and knowledgeable about the Sunnah." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about him in the summary.
[Machine] Abu Musa said, "If you say that, then indeed he used to hear when we did not hear and enter when we did not enter." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about this in his summary.
[Machine] Indeed, Allah has forgiven me one of my sins, and I have been called as Abdullah bin Rawthah. Alla of it is authentic.
[Machine] "I traveled to Sham (Levant) and performed two units of prayer, then I said: "O Allah, facilitate for me a righteous companion." I met a group of people, so I sat down, and suddenly, someone came and sat beside me. I asked, 'Who is this?' He replied, 'Abu Darda.' I said, 'Verily, I prayed to Allah to facilitate for me a righteous companion, and He facilitated for me.' He asked, 'Where are you from?' I said, 'From the people of Kufa.' He said, 'Do you not have with you the son of Umm Abdu, the companion of the two sandals, the pillow, and the pitcher, and among you the one whom Allah protected from Satan on the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ , and among you is the companion of the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that no one else knows?'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: "There are ten in Paradise," and he mentioned Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Talha, Zubair, Abdur Rahman ibn Awf, Saad ibn Abi Waqqas, Saeed ibn Zaid, and Abdullah ibn Masood.
[Machine] The translation of the given phrase in English is:
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, they both are heavier in the scale than Uhud.'"
[Machine] I was with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and with him was Abu Bakr and whoever Allah willed from his companions. We passed by Abdullah bin Mas'ud while he was praying. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Who is this?" It was said, "It is Abdullah bin Mas'ud." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, Abdullah recites the Quran with attentiveness as it was revealed." Abdullah praised and glorified his Lord and performed the best praise for his Lord. Then, he asked the Prophet ﷺ and presented the most excellent question, a question asked by a servant to his Lord. Then, he said, "O Allah, I ask You for a faith that does not falter and a bliss that never ends, and to accompany Muhammad ﷺ in the highest ranks of Paradise, in Your Gardens of everlasting bliss." The Prophet ﷺ used to say, "Ask, and you shall be granted. Ask, and you shall be granted" twice. I quickly ran to give him the good news, but I found that Abu Bakr had already informed him, as he was always ahead in doing good.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I am pleased for my ummah (community) with what the son of Umm Abd is pleased with." This is an authentic chain according to the conditions of the two scholars, and they did not exclude it, but it has a weakness in the narration of Sufyan Ath-Thawri. So Muhammad ibn Musa ibn Imran Al-Faqih informed us, narrating from Ibrahim ibn Abi Talib, who narrated from Abu Kurayb, who narrated from Waki', who narrated from Sufyan. As for the hadith of Israel, it is a fabricated one.
[Machine] The translation of the given phrase is: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I am pleased for my Ummah (followers) with what the son of a slave woman is pleased for her.'"
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If I were to appoint anyone to a position of authority without consulting (the believers), I would have appointed Ibn Umm ʿAbd (ʿAbdullah bin Masʿood).ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 739)
Abu Bakr and 'Umar gave him the glad tidings that the Messenger of Allah had said: "Whoever would like to recite the Qur'an as fresh as when it was revealed, let him recite it like Ibn Umm 'Abd.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 138)
[Machine] I was sitting with Umar when a thin man came to him. Umar looked at him and his face lit up, then he said, "How filled with knowledge he is! How filled with knowledge he is!" referring to Abdullah ibn Mas'ood.
[Machine] Inform us about the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "Tell us about Abdullah ibn Mas'ud." He said, "He had knowledge of the Quran and Sunnah, then he stopped and considered that sufficient." He mentioned the rest of the hadith, "It is authentic according to the conditions of the two Sheikhs (referring to Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim) and they did not exclude it." According to the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim.
[Machine] "I and Ibn Masood stayed in five quarters of the Quraysh. Quraysh said to the Prophet ﷺ , 'If you expelled these people from you, we would sit with you and keep these people away from us.' Then Allah revealed, 'Do not expel those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His countenance. Not upon you is anything of their account, and not upon them is anything of your account. So were you to expel them, you would [then] be of the wrongdoers.' [Al-An'am: 52] Until His saying, 'so be grateful to Me and to your parents.' [Al-An'am: 53]."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said to Abdullah ibn Mas'ood, "Read." Abdullah replied, "I can only recite what has been revealed to me." The Prophet said, "I want to hear it from someone else." So Abdullah started reciting Surah An-Nisa' until he reached the verse, "So how [will it be] when We bring from every nation a witness and we bring you, [O Muhammad] against these [people] as a witness?" (Quran 4:41) At this point, the Prophet started pondering and stopped Abdullah. The Prophet said to him, "Continue." Abdullah praised Allah in his first words, thanked and glorified Him, and sent blessings upon the Prophet. He then gave testimony to the truth and said, "We are content with Allah as our Lord, Islam as our religion, and with what pleases Allah and His Messenger." The Prophet replied, "I am content with what pleases you, O son of Umm Abd."
[Machine] "He was a brother who mentioned the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, but he did not mention Ibn Mas'ood. So I said to him, 'I see that you do not mention Ibn Mas'ood.' He said, 'That man is someone whom I do not prefer anyone over.'"
[Machine] "Abdullah used to resemble the Prophet ﷺ in his guidance, behavior, and appearance." Ibrahim said, "Alqamah used to resemble Abdullah."
[Machine] "The day seemed long to me, so I remembered who I was speaking to. He said, 'And then he started telling me about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and I was telling him too. He then began telling me and said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'The one who is asleep during a time of turmoil is better than the one who lies down, and the one who lies down is better than the one who sits, and the one who sits is better than the one who stands, and the one who stands is better than the one who walks, and the one who walks is better than the one who rides; their killings are all in the fire.'' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, when will that be?' He said, 'That will be during the times of turmoil.' I said, 'And when are the times of turmoil?' He said, 'When a person cannot trust their companion.' I said, 'So, what do you command me to do if I live to see that time?' He said, 'Restrain yourself, your hands, and enter your home.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what if someone enters my home?'
