27. Book of the Companions
[Machine] I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was descending in 'Ukaz. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, who follows you in this matter?" He said, "Two free men and a slave: Abu Bakr and Bilal." I embraced Islam at that moment. As for the narration of Abu 'Amr
[Machine] Thana Shaddad ibn Abdullah, Abu Ammar, and he had met a group of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Abu Umarah said to Amr ibn Abasa, "O Amr ibn Abasa, by what do you claim that you possess one-fourth of Islam?" So he mentioned the Hadith in its entirety.
[Machine] "Abu Bakr was our leader, our best and most beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he adhered to their conditions and did not contradict them according to the conditions of Bukhari and Muslim."
[Machine] "And he said, by Allah, I have never been eager for leadership, neither day nor night, nor have I desired it. I have never asked Allah, Almighty and Glorious, for it, neither secretly nor openly. But I feared Fitnah (trials and tribulations), and I am not at ease with leadership. However, I have been entrusted with a great task, for which I have no strength or capability except by relying on the strength and might of Allah, Almighty and Glorious. If I had wished, the Muslims would have accepted my leadership today. The Muhajirun (those who migrated from Mecca to Medina), accepted what I said and did not object to it. Ali and Zubair also did not express anger, except because we were deprived of participating in the consultation. We believe that after the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr is the most deserving of leadership. He was the companion of the cave and the second of the two, and we are well aware of his nobility and greatness. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed him to lead the people in prayer while he was alive."
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, the Ansar said: A leader from among us and a leader from among you. ‘Umar went to them and said: O Ansar, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer? Which of you would like himself to be given precedence over Abu Bakr? The Ansar said: We seek refuge with Allah from being given precedence over Abu Bakr. (Using translation from Aḥmad 133)
[Machine] "They indeed struck the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he fainted. Abu Bakr stood up and started calling out, saying, 'Woe to you! Are you killing a man just because he says, 'My Lord is Allah?' They asked, 'Who is this?' He said, 'He is the son of Abu Quhafa, the madman.'"
[Machine] He informed him that he heard Suraqah ibn Ju'shum say, "The messengers of the disbelieving Quraysh came to us, attributing a debt to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr. They said that whoever kills either of them, the murderer will be demanded a compensation, and whoever captures them alive, they will be demanded a ransom."
[Machine] I heard Ali say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ preceded and surpassed Abu Bakr and Umar by three. Then he said, 'Then we faced a trial, and Allah forgives whom He wills.'"
When ʿUmar bin al Khattab ؓ was placed on his bier, the people gathered around him, praying and invoking blessings upon him before [the bier] was lifted up, and I was among them. No one alarmed me except a man who seized me by the shoulder from behind. I turned and saw that it was ‘Ali bin Abi Talib ؓ . He prayed for mercy for ‘Umar ؓ , then he said: You have not left behind anyone more dear to me, with the like of whose deeds I would hope to meet Allah, than you. By Allah, I think that Allah will most certainly join you to your two companions, and that is because I often heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, ʿAbu Bakr, ʿUmar and I went; Abu Bakr, ʿUmar and I came in; Abu Bakr, ‘Umar and I went out.” So I think that Allah will most certainly join you to them. (Using translation from Aḥmad 898)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque with one hand on Abu Bakr and the other on Umar, saying, "This is how we will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment." Sa'id bin Muslimah al-Qurashi is a weak narrator.
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The first person from whom the earth will split open is me, then Abu Bakr, then Umar, then I will come to the people of Baqi, and the earth will split open for them, and I will be sent between them.'"
It was narrated from Abu Salih al-Hanafi that It was said to ‘Ali and Abu Bakr ؓ on the day of Badr. Jibreel is with one of you and Mikaʿeel is with the other, and Israfeel, a mighty angel, is present at the fight - or he said, is present in the ranks. (Using translation from Aḥmad 1257)
[Machine] "While I was at Badr, a strong wind blew and I had never seen anything like it before. Then it stopped, and another strong wind blew that I had never seen before except for the one that came before it. Then it stopped, and another strong wind blew that I had never seen before except for the one that came before it. The first wind was Gabriel, who came down with a thousand angels accompanying the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The second wind was Michael, who came down with a thousand angels on the right of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with Abu Bakr on his right. The third wind was Israfil, who came down with a thousand angels from the left of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I was with him on the left. When Allah Almighty defeated His enemies, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ carried me on his horse and it shot off, causing me to fall on my back. I called upon Allah, and He held me. When I regained my posture, I struck with my hand at the people, until this wound of mine started to bleed." And he pointed towards his armpit.
[Machine] I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he looked towards Abu Bakr and Umar and said, "These are the hearing and sight."
[Machine] From the words of Allah, Exalted and Glorified be He: "Indeed, Allah is his Protector and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers." (Surah At-Tahrim, 4). Abu Umaamah narrated to me that just as Allah said, "Allah is his Protector and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers," Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) are also so. This hadith has a sound chain of narration and Musa bin Umayr did not exclude them.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If you follow Abu Bakr, you will find him ascetic in this worldly life and eager for the Hereafter. If you follow Umar, you will find him strong and trustworthy, and he will not lead you astray in matters concerning Allah, the Most High. And if you follow Ali, you will find him a guide and a rightly guided leader, who will lead you on the right path."
[Machine] They said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you appoint a successor over us?" He said, "If I appoint a caliph over you and you disobey him, you will be afflicted with punishment." They said, "If you appoint Abu Bakr as a successor over us?" He said, "If I appoint him as a successor over you, you will find him strong in the matter of Allah but weak in his body." They said, "If you appoint Umar as a successor over us?" He said, "If I appoint him as a successor over you, you will find him strong and trustworthy, and you will hold no blame against him in matters related to Allah." They said, "If you appoint Ali as a successor over us?" He said, "Indeed, if you do not do what he commands, then if you do, you will find him as a guide and guided one who follows the straight path with you." This is Uthman bin Umair, he is also known as Abu al-Yaqdhan. Weakness diminished him.
One day the Prophet ﷺ said: Which of you had dream? A man said: It is I. I saw as though a scale descended from the sky. You and AbuBakr were weighed and you were heavier; AbuBakr and Umar were weighed and AbuBakr was heavier: Umar and Uthman were weighed and Umar was heavier; than the scale was taken up. we saw signs of dislike on the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4634)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray Fajr and then turn towards his companions and say, "Who among you had a dream last night?" One day, he prayed and then asked, "Who among you saw a dream?" A man replied, "O Messenger of Allah, I saw as if there was a scale from the sky, and you were placed in one side, while Abu Bakr was placed in the other side. You outweighed Abu Bakr, then you were lifted and Abu Bakr was left in his place." Then, Umar bin Khattab was brought and placed in the other side of the scale. Umar outweighed Abu Bakr, so Abu Bakr was lifted and Umar was left in his place. Then, Uthman was brought and placed in the other side of the scale. Umar outweighed Uthman, so Uthman was lifted and Umar was left in his place. Then, the scale changed and the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned serious. He said, "The Caliphate after prophethood will last for thirty years, then it will become a monarchy." Sa'id bin Jumhan said to me, Sufaynah, "Hold onto my years, which are the years of Abu Bakr and the ten years of Umar, and the twelve years of Uthman, and the six years of Ali, all of them." And these narrations have been authentically attributed to the Prophet ﷺ . Adh-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.
Last night a good man had a vision in which Abu Bakr seemed to be joined to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ‘Umar to Abu Bakr, and ‘Uthman to ‘Umar. Jabir said: When we got up and left the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we said: The good man is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and that their being joined together means that they are the rulers over this matter with which Allah has sent His Prophet ﷺ. Abu Dawud said: It has been transmitted by Yunus and Shu’aib, but they did not mention ‘Amr b. Aban. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4636)
[Machine] About the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "The caliphate is in Medina, and the kingdom is in Sham (Syria)." Authenticated by Sulaiman ibn Abi Sulaiman, and his father is unknown.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr, who married me to his daughter and carried me to the place of emigration."
[Machine] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the year of the conquest, he saw women hitting the faces of horses with their veils. He smiled at Abu Bakr and asked, 'Oh Abu Bakr, what did Hassaan ibn Thabit say?' So Abu Bakr recited: 'I have lost my sense of satisfaction in my daughter unless they see her arousing the interest of neck muscles as if they were arguing in haste. Women hitting them with their veils.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Enter from where Hassaan said to enter.'"

The Prophet ﷺ said: Gabriel came and taking me by the hand showed the gate of Paradise by which my people will enter. AbuBakr then said: Messenger of Allah! I wish I had been with you so that I might have looked at it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: You, AbuBakr, will be the first of my people to enter Paradise. She said, "The young virgin is Aisha bint Abu Bakr, the most beloved creature of Allah to you. And the widow is Sauda bint Zam'ah."

I was told that Abu Bakr said: O Messenger of Allah, how could we be in a good state after this verse: “It will not be in accordance with your desires (Muslims), nor those of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), whosoever works evil, will have the recompense thereofʿ fan-Nisa' 4:123]? Will we be punished for every bad deed we do? There Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿMay Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr, do you not fall sick? Do you not get exhausted? Do you not feel sad? Don't calamities befall you?ʿ He said: Of course. He said: ʿThat is the recompense you are given.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 68)

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, the preachers of the Ansar (the residents of Madinah) stood up. One of them said, "O migrants! Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to appoint a companion from among you along with a companion from amongst us, so we would see that in this matter, two men should be appointed, one from among you and the other from among us." The preachers of the Ansar continued to discuss this matter until Zaid bin Thabit stood up and said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was one of the migrants, and the Imam (leader) should also be from the migrants. As for us, we are his supporters, just as we were the supporters of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Abu Bakr then stood up and said, "May Allah reward you all, O people of Ansar, and may He make your words firm." Then he said, "If you had done otherwise, we would not have accepted your allegiance." Zaid bin Thabit then took Abu Bakr's hand and said, "This is your companion, so pledge your allegiance to him." They all pledged their allegiance to Abu Bakr and then left. When Abu Bakr sat on the pulpit, he looked at the faces of the people and did not see Ali. He asked about him, and some people from the Ansar brought Ali to him. Abu Bakr said, "O cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , did you intend to cause a fitnah (discord) among the Muslims?" Ali replied, "There should not be any blame on you, O successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He then pledged his allegiance to him. Then Abu Bakr did not see Zubair ibn Al-Awam, so he asked about him until they brought him. Abu Bakr said, "O cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companion, did you also intend to cause a fitnah among the Muslims?" Zubair replied, "There should not be any blame on you, O successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He then pledged his allegiance to him.

Some people who used to believe in him and trust him turned away, while men from the polytheists went to Abu Bakr and asked him, "Does your companion claim that he was taken on a journey to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa last night?" Abu Bakr asked them, "Did he say that?" They replied, "Yes." Abu Bakr then said, "If he indeed said that, then he has spoken the truth." They asked him, "Do you believe him when he claims that he went to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa and came back before morning?" Abu Bakr answered, "Yes, I believe him in something even more miraculous than that. I believe him in the news of the heavens in the early morning or evening. That is why he is called Abu Bakr As-Siddiq."

[Machine] "What the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not appoint, I will appoint, but if Allah wants good for the people, He will gather them after me on what is best for them, just as He gathered them after their Prophet on what is best for them."
