27. Book of the Companions
[Machine] His uncle, [the poet] Al-Bahr Al-Rajz, praised the young man named Namari, who was captured by the Romans, while my family is loyal to the Prophet. He said, "And the Prophet is the name of the village where its people were. Suhaib was brought up among the Romans and he owned a slave dog from them. Then he came to Makkah and Abdullah ibn Jud'an Al-Tamimi bought him and freed him. Suhaib stayed with him in Makkah until Abdullah ibn Jud'an passed away. Then the Prophet ﷺ was sent."
[Machine] "Suhayb, also known as Abu Yahya, was Suhayb ibn Sinan al-Namari from the tribe of Namir ibn Qasit. He was captured and taken as a prisoner and ended up in the land of the Romans. It is said that Suhayb al-Rum (Suhayb of the Romans) reached the age of seventy years. He used to dye his hair with henna. He passed away in Madinah in the month of Shawwal in the thirty-eighth year and was buried in Al-Baqi' cemetery."
[Machine] When Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) migrated, the people of Makkah followed him and confiscated his belongings. So, he took out forty arrows from his possessions and said, "You are not allowed to approach me until I have put an arrow in each of you. Then, I will turn to my sword, and you will know that I am a man who left behind two valuable assets in Makkah, which are now yours." Adh-Dhahabi remained silent about this incident in his summary.
[Machine] "And Allah, Exalted and Mighty, said, 'We did not make for him before this a name.' (Surah Maryam, 19:7)
He (Prophet Muhammad) said, 'Certainly, He (Allah) said, 'And indeed, you do not withhold [superfluously] anything but that you spent it, and He also said, 'Indeed, you are called to the collector of sadaqah (zakah), and you are among the emigrants from whom Allah has favored.' (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:75)
So, Suhaib said, 'Regarding the statement, 'Indeed, I used to go by the name Abu Yahya, for surely Allah's Messenger ﷺ used to call me Abu Yahya. As for the statement, 'I do not withhold anything but that I spend it,' indeed Allah the Exalted says, 'And whatever you spend of anything, He will replace it. And He is the best of providers.' (Surah Saba, 34:39) And as for the statement, 'Indeed, I am called to the collector of sadaqah (zakah),' surely among the Arabs, they curse each other. So a group of Arabs cursed me after I had known my family and upbringing. They sold me for a black slave in Kufa (Iraq). So, I took their language, and if I were to belong to a lowly family, I would not be associated with anything except them.' He (the narrator) said, 'You have spoken the truth.'"
[Machine] "I was never made a messenger of Allah ﷺ between myself and the enemy, and I was never positioned to his right, left, or front." The narration is authentic, but it was not mentioned in Sahih Bukhari.
[Machine] "I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the time of migration while he was eating dates. So, I approached and started eating from the dates with an afflicted eye. He said, 'Are you eating dates while having an afflicted eye?' I replied, 'I am only eating from the healthy side of my face, which is not afflicted.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and said, 'The chain of narration is sound and they did not mention this incident.'"
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about the early emigrants, "They are the forerunners, the intercessors and those who are guided by their Lord, Most Blessed and Exalted. By the One in whose hand my soul is, they will come on the Day of Resurrection with weapons on their shoulders, knocking on the door of Paradise. The treasurer will ask them, 'Who are you?' They will reply, 'We are the emigrants.' The treasurer will ask them, 'Have you been accounted for?' They will prostrate on their knees, scatter what is in their pockets, and raise their hands towards the sky, saying, 'O Lord, and what will be our accountability? We left our families, wealth, and children.' Allah will present them with wings made of gold adorned with emerald and ruby, and they will fly until they enter Paradise.' This is what Allah, the Exalted, said: 'And they will say, 'Praise be to Allah, who has removed sorrow from us'.' (Quran 35:34) until 'Away from grief.' (Quran 35:35)"
Abu Hudhayfah said, "Hudhayfah said, 'Saify said, 'Suhayb said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'They will have in Paradise ranks higher than those they had in the world.' The chain of narration is unknown, and the content is strange.' Abu Hurayrah mentioned this in the virtues of Suhayb because he was one of the early emigrants. The narrator of the hadith is Abu 'Amr, our ascetic sheikh, may Allah have mercy on him." On the contrary, the narration and its chain of narration are authentic.
[Machine] "I accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before the revelation was sent to him. The chain of narration is authentic and it was not mentioned in Sahih."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have been shown the land of your migration as a fertile land between two lava fields. It can either be a land of migration or it can be called Yathrib." He ﷺ then left for Madinah, Abu Bakr accompanied him and I had wanted to go with him. However, two young boys from the tribe of Quraish stopped me, so I spent that night standing and not sitting. They said, "Allah has kept him away from you with his belly." I did not complain, and they left. Some people from them caught up with me after I had walked for a while to confront me. I said to them, "Can I give you some bags of gold and you let me go on my way and not bother me?" So I followed them to Makkah and said to them, "Dig under the doorsteps, as the bags will be under them." They went to a certain woman and took the two bags and then I continued on until I reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before he entered Quba. When he saw me he said, "O Abu Yahya, the transaction has been profitable." He said this three times. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, no one preceded me in coming to you, and no one has informed you except Jibreel, peace be upon him."

[Machine] "Suhayb redeemed his family from Mecca with his wealth, then he left as a migrant. They caught up with him on the way, and he gave them what remained of his wealth."
[Machine] The translation is as follows: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: 'O Allah, You are not a god that we invented, nor a Lord that we created, and there was no one for us to turn to before You, and we do not seek help or support from anyone besides You, and we do not associate anyone with You in worship. Blessed and exalted are You.' Ka'b al-Ahbar said: 'The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate with this.' This hadith has a sound chain of narration, but it has not been included in any of the hadith collections."
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not hate Suhaib." It is a saheeh (authentic) narration and it has not been excluded.

[Machine] I said to Abu Suhayb, "Why don't you talk about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as your companions do?" He said, "My son, I have heard just as they have heard, but what prevents me from talking is that I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever intentionally lies about me will surely be destined to tie two barley stalks together, and he will never be able to do it.'" Amru is weak.
