27. Book of the Companions
[Machine] "Thabit ibn Qais ibn Shammash ibn Imri' al-Qais ibn Malik, the orator of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , witnessed the battles of Uhud, Al-Khandaq, and all other significant events alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He was martyred on the day of Yamama."
[Machine] "Thabit ibn Qais ibn Shammass was martyred on the day of Yamama, and Abu Bakr had sent him ahead of the Ansar with Khalid ibn al-Walid."
[Machine] I heard Ahmed bin Sayyar saying, "Thabit bin Qais bin Shammas, the father of Abdul Rahman, uses the nickname Abu Abdur Rahman."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What a good man Abu Bakr is, what a good man Umar is, what a good man Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah is, what a good man Thabit ibn Qais ibn Shammas is, what a good man Muadh ibn Jabal is, what a good man Muadh ibn Amr ibn Jamuh is. How wretched are so-and-so and so-and-so." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned these seven men but did not mention Suhayl for us. It is authentic according to the conditions of Muslim, but he did not include it.
[Machine] "When the battle of Yamamah took place, I went to Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas while he was dyeing his hair. I said, 'O uncle, don't you see what people are going through?' He quickly put on his robes and approached, saying, 'Now, now.' He repeated this phrase with great enthusiasm and pointed with his finger to the faces of the people, mimicking their actions. He said, 'How terrible that you have become like this! This is not how we used to fight alongside the Prophet ﷺ .' Then he fought until he was killed." (This narration is considered authentic according to the criteria of the two sheikhs, referring to Imam al-Bukhari and Muslim.)
[Machine] Thabit bin Qais gave a sermon at the house of the Prophet in Medina and said, "We will prevent you from what we prevent ourselves and our children from. What is there for us?" The Prophet said, "Paradise." They replied, "We are satisfied with this on the condition of the two sheikhs (referring to Bukhari and Muslim) and they did not reject it."
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, I feared that I might have been destroyed," said the individual. The Prophet (pbuh) asked, "Why?" He replied, "Allah has forbidden us from praising ourselves for what we have not done, and I find myself loving praise. Allah has forbidden us from false pride, and I find myself loving beauty. Allah has forbidden us from raising our voices above yours, and yet I have a loud voice." The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) asked, "Thabit, would you not be pleased to live a praiseworthy life, be killed as a martyr, and enter Paradise?" He replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (pbuh) said, "Then live a praiseworthy life and be killed as a martyr on the day of Musaylimah al-Kadhdhab." This hadith is reported by Muslim alone on the authority of Hammam ibn Salamah and Sulayman ibn al-Mughira from Thabit, on the condition mentioned by the two Sheikhs (referring to Imam Bukhari and Muslim). They did not report it in this context. Thabit ibn Qays narrated the hadith briefly according to the conditions set by Bukhari and Muslim.
[Machine] "And Allah said, 'O Allah, I declare my innocence to You from what these people have brought, and I apologize to You for what these people have done. How evil are the friends you have accustomed us to! Leave us and our companions alone for a while, and then he carried and fought for a while and was killed. His armor had been stolen, and a man saw it while he was asleep. He said, 'My armor is in a sack under such and such location.' He left behind his will and testament. They searched for the armor and found it where he had indicated. They carried out his instructions. 'It is authentic according to the condition of Muslim, and it has not been mentioned that they disobeyed it. The story of his will and testament is amazing.'"

[Machine] When Allah revealed to His Messenger ﷺ , "Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet" [Al-Hujurat 2], and the verse “And Allah does not like everyone who is self-deluded and boastful” [Al-Hadid 23], my father sat in his house crying because the Messenger of Allah was no longer with us. He asked him about his affairs, and he said, "I am a loud-voiced person and I fear that my deeds may be in vain." The Messenger of Allah replied, "No, you will live a praiseworthy life, die as a martyr, and Allah will admit you into paradise in peace." On the day of Yamamah, my father was martyred while fighting alongside Khalid ibn Al-Walid. A Muslim man saw him in a dream and said, "When I was killed, a Muslim man took my shield and hid it in the farthest corner of the camp. He covered it with a sheet and placed a saddle on top. Go and inform the Amir, but be careful not to say it was a dream and dismiss it. When you reach Madinah, go to the Khalifa of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and inform him that I have a debt of so and so, and that my son is a slave named so and so." My father followed this advice and went to the Amir, who verified the information. He also went to Abu Bakr and informed him, and he acted according to his instructions. We do not know of anyone who followed the instructions of his will after his death except for Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about this incident in his summary.
