27. Book of the Companions
[Machine] Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq met Al-Hasan ibn Ali, embraced him, and said, "He resembles the Prophet, not resembling Ali." And Ali laughed.
[Machine] He met Hasan ibn Ali and said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kiss your stomach." So he asked Hasan to reveal the spot that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissed so that he could kiss it too. Hasan revealed it to him, and he kissed it.
[Machine] I heard Wahb Ibn Abi Juhaifa saying, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Al-Hasan Ibn Ali resembled him."
[Machine] "There was none among the children of Ali resembling the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more than Al-Hasan." Sahih.
[Machine] The passage translates to: "Al-Hasan ibn Ali performed Hajj twenty-five times on foot, and indeed the camels were led alongside him."
[Machine] "Fatima gave birth to Hassan two and a half years after Uhud, and Hassan gave birth four years and six months from that date." Al-Dhahabi remained silent on it in the summary.
[Machine] Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib passed away in Rabi' al-Awwal in the year forty-nine, and Sa'id ibn al-As prayed over him.
[Machine] "I still love this man after seeing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing what he was doing. I saw Al-Hasan come to the Prophet's room ﷺ while he was putting his fingers in the Prophet's beard ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ was putting his tongue in his mouth, then he said, 'O Allah, I love him, so you should love him.'"
[Machine] We were with Abu Hurairah when Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib came to us and greeted us with peace. We returned the greeting, but Abu Hurairah did not notice him. So we said to him, "O Abu Hurairah, Hasan ibn Ali greeted us with peace." He followed him and said, "And peace be upon you, my master." Then he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'He is a master.'"
[Machine] The prophet Mohammed ﷺ kissed his grandson Hasan and embraced him, and placed him on his lap. There was a man from the Ansar (helpers) present, and he said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have a son who is old enough, but I have never kissed him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What can I do if Allah has deprived your heart of mercy?"
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ came carrying Hassan ibn Ali on his neck. A man met him and said, "What a good passenger you have O young boy!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "And what a good carrier he is."
[Machine] I said to Al-Hasan ibn Ali that people are saying you want the caliphate. He replied, "The leaders of the Arabs were in my hands; they would fight whoever I fought and make peace with whoever I made peace with. I abandoned it seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty and to spare the blood of the nation of Muhammad ﷺ . Then it was taken from me by the deceit of the people of Hijaz."
This is a sound chain of narration according to the criteria of the two Sheikhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not include it.
[Machine] A man approached Hasan ibn Ali and said, "O you who have blackened the face of the believers!" Hasan replied, "Do not rebuke me, may Allah have mercy on you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw the Umayyads delivering sermons on his pulpit, one man after another, and it displeased him. Then the verse 'Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar'—a river in Paradise—was revealed. And the Surah 'Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months' was revealed, over which the Umayyads would rule. This is sufficient for us, and it neither increases nor decreases." This is a sound chain of narration, and the one who said this to Hasan ibn Ali was Sufyan ibn al-Layl, a companion of his father.
[Machine] I went to Al-Hasan ibn Ali when he pledged allegiance to Muawiyah, and I said, "Oh, the one who darkens the face of the believers." Then, the secret was mentioned by him, (reference to the secret conversation between Al-Hasan and Muawiyah).
[Machine] When the matter between Hasan ibn Ali and Mu'awiya occurred, I came to him in Medina while he was sitting with his companions. He mentioned the hadith at length. We then discussed the adhan (call to prayer) in his presence. Some of us said that the adhan began as a vision experienced by Abdullah ibn Zayd ibn Asim. Hasan ibn Ali replied, "The matter of the adhan is greater than that. Gabriel, ﷺ , called the adhan in the heavens two by two and taught it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and in one instance he called the iqama (second call to prayer) one by one and taught it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Hasan called the adhan when he was appointed."
[Machine] I was a witness on the day Hasan ibn Ali died, and I saw Husayn ibn Ali saying to Sa'id ibn al-As, while gesturing at his neck, "Step forward. If it were not a tradition, I would not have asked you to precede." There was an issue among them, and Abu Hurairah said, "Are you begrudging the son of your Prophet ﷺ a grave to bury him in? I heard the Messenger of Allah say, 'Whoever loves them has loved me, and whoever despises them has despised me.'"
“My grandfather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, taught me some words to say in Qunut of Witr: Allahumma ‘afini fiman ‘afait, wa tawallani fiman tawallait, wahdini fiman hadait, wa qini sharra ma qadait, wa barik li fima a’tait. Subhanaka rabbana tabarakta wa ta’alait (O Allah, pardon me along with those whom You have pardoned, be an ally to me along with those whom You are an ally to, guide me along with those whom You have guided, protect me from the evil that You have decreed, and bless for me that which You have bestowed. For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted).” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1178)
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me these words in witr. He said: Say: Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayta wa 'afini fiman afayta wa tawallani fiman tawallayta wa barik li fima a'tayta, wa qini sharra ma qadayta, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk, wa innahu la yadhilluman walayta, tabarakta Rabbana wa at'alayt. Wa salla Allahu ala al-Nabi Muhammad (O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, pardon me among those You have pardoned, turn to me in friendship among those on whom You have turned in friendship, and bless me in what You have bestowed, and save me from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can influence You; and he is not humiliated whom You have befriended. Blessed are You, O Lord, and Exalted. And may Allah (SWT) send salah upon the Prophet Muhammad)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1746)
[Machine] "A man has been taken away tonight, whom the first and the last cannot surpass in deeds and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give him his banner and he would fight while Jibril stood on his right and Mika'il on his left. He does not turn back until Allah grants him victory, and he does not leave anything on the people of the earth, whether it be yellow or white, except for seven hundred dirhams from his gifts. He wanted to buy a servant for his family with them."
"Then he said, 'O people, whoever knows me has known me, and whoever does not know me, I am Al-Hasan ibn Ali, I am the son of the Prophet, I am the son of the appointed successor, I am the son of the bearer of glad tidings, I am the son of the warner, I am the son of the caller to Allah by His permission, I am the son of the shining lamp, and I am from the people of the household to whom Jibril used to descend and ascend from among us. I am from the people of the household whom Allah has removed impurity from and purified an absolute purification. I am from the people of the household whom Allah has made their love obligatory upon every Muslim.' And Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, said to His Prophet ﷺ, 'Say: I do not ask you for any reward for it except love of the near relatives.' And whoever does a good deed, We will increase for him in good over it.' [42:23] So, the doing of a good deed is love for us, the people of the household, is not correct."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ named Al-Hasan ibn Ali on his seventh day, and he derived the name Husayn from his name. It is mentioned that there was nothing between them except affection.
[Machine] Al-Hasan ibn Ali was poisoned several times, each time surviving until the last time when he died. His liver was affected, and when he died, the women of Banu Hashim mourned him for a month.
[Machine] "Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib was pledged allegiance to in Kufa shortly after the killing of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali. He received the pledge from his companions. Haritha ibn Mudarrib narrated to me, saying, 'I heard al-Hasan ibn Ali say, "By God, I will not pledge allegiance to you except on what I tell you."' They asked, 'What is it?' He replied, 'You will make peace with whomever I make peace, and you will fight whomever I fight.' And when the pledge was completed, he addressed them."
[Machine] When Ali was killed, Hasan stood up to address the people. A man from the tribe of Azd Ash-Shanu'ah stood up and said, "I bear witness that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ holding him (Hasan) in his lap and saying, 'Whoever loves me, let him love him and inform the absent ones.' If it were not for the honor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I would never have mentioned it."
[Machine] After the allegiance was pledged to Hasan ibn Ali, he seriously confronted Mu'awiya and advanced towards him, appointing Abdullah ibn Ja'far al-Tayyar at the front with ten thousand men. He then followed him with Qays ibn Sa'd leading a great army. Mu'awiya corresponded with Abdullah ibn Ja'far, promising him a million dirhams if he came to Hijaz, to which he agreed, abandoned his course, and went to Mu'awiya, who fulfilled his promise. The army dispersed, and Qays ibn Sa'd remained separate with many joining him. Those who were with Abdullah ibn Ja'far were also approached by Mu'awiya and enticed, but they did not comply until Hasan made peace with Mu'awiya, relinquishing authority to him. Hasan and his companions proceeded to meet Mu'awiya, and Hasan was treacherously wounded in the Sabat Pass by Sinan ibn al-Jarrahi al-Asadi, an ally of Banu Nasr, who stabbed him in the thigh with an abhorrent strike. Sinan held the views of the Khawarij. Hasan clutched him and fell to the ground with him. Abdullah ibn Zubyan ibn Amarah al-Tamimi leapt upon Sinan, biting his face until he severed his nose and crushed his head with a stone, killing him instantly. Thus, away with the companions of the Blaze. Hasan was carried on a stretcher to Mada'in and was hosted by Sa'd ibn Mas'ud al-Thaqafi, the uncle of al-Mukhtar, who was Ali's governor in Mada'in. He brought a doctor to treat Hasan until he recovered.

[Machine] Al-Hasan ibn Ali received Muawiya with battalions like mountains. Amr ibn al-As said, "By God, I see battalions that will not retreat unless their peers are killed." Muawiya, being the better man of the two, replied, "What if these kill those? Who will be responsible for their blood? Who will handle their affairs? Who will take care of their women?" So Muawiya sent Abd al-Rahman ibn Samura ibn Habeeb ibn Abd Shams. Sufyan said he was a companion. Al-Hasan agreed to peace with Muawiya, surrendered leadership to him, and pledged allegiance to him on conditions and covenants. Muawiya sent a great sum of money to Al-Hasan, reportedly five hundred thousand dirhams, in Jumada al-Awwal of the year forty-one. Al-Hasan had led before surrendering leadership to Muawiya for seven months and eleven days. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in "Al-Talkhis."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to al-Hasan ibn Ali. This son of mine is a Sayyid (chief), and I hope Allah may reconcile two parties of my community by means of him. Hammad's version has: And perhaps Allah may reconcile two large parties of Muslims by means of him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4662)
[Machine] While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering a sermon to the people, Hassan ibn Ali came to him and climbed onto his lap. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ embraced him and said, "Indeed, this son of mine is a master and indeed, Allah the Almighty may use him to reconcile between two great factions of Muslims." Both of these narrations were reported by Al-Bukhari through the route of Abu Musa Israil from Al-Hasan.
[Machine] A man criticized Hasan ibn Ali when he pledged allegiance to Muawiya, saying that Hasan had brought shame to the believers and had done this and that. Hasan replied, "Do not blame me, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw the Umayyads taking turns on his pulpit, one after another, and it distressed him and concerned him, so Allah Almighty revealed: 'Indeed, We have granted you Al-Kawthar,' a river in Paradise. And He also revealed: 'Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree. And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months' during which they will rule after you.” This was omitted by Al-Dhahabi from his summary due to its weakness.

[Machine] We were at the forefront with Hasan ibn Ali, numbering twelve thousand, with our swords dripping with sharpness ready to fight the people of Sham, led by Abu al-Umr Taha. When the peace agreement between Hasan ibn Ali and Muawiya reached us, it was as if our backs were broken from anger and rage. When Hasan ibn Ali arrived in Kufa, a man from among us, known as Abu Amir Sufyan ibn al-Layl, stood up and said, "Peace be upon you, O debaser of the believers." Hasan replied, "Do not say that, O Abu Amir. I have not debased the believers, but I disliked killing them in pursuit of power." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about this in the summary.

[Machine] "The wisest among the wise is the pious, and the weakest among the weak is immorality. As for this matter in which Muawiya and I differed, it is a rightful matter for each of us. However, Muawiya had more right to it than me, so I left it for him to decide, to seek the satisfaction of the Muslims and preserve their lives. Though I do not know, it may be a trial for you and a temporary enjoyment. I say this and seek forgiveness from Allah for me and for you." - This was omitted by Al-Dhahabi from his summary due to its weakness.

[Machine] Hasan ibn Ali saw in a dream a vision with the words "{Say, He is Allah, [who is] One}" [Al-Ikhlas 1] written between his eyes. He shared this vision with Said ibn al-Musayyib, who said, "If your vision is true, then your time has come." He was poisoned that year and passed away, may Allah have mercy on him. Al-Dhahabi omitted it from his summary due to its weakness.
