27. Book of the Companions
[Machine] Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim was the brother of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ through breastfeeding, and his cousin nursed him. Halimah nursed him for a few days, and he became familiar with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent as a Prophet, Abu Sufyan opposed him and criticized him, and his companions did the same. He remained angry with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for twenty years, never leaving a place where the Quraysh went to fight against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. However, in the year of the Conquest, Allah instilled Islam in his heart when the qualities of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were mentioned to him in Makkah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted him as a Muslim before he descended from Abu Awa. Abu Sufyan, his son Ja'far, and he accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and witnessed the Conquest of Makkah and the Battle of Hunayn. Abu Sufyan said, "When we encountered the enemy at Hunayn, I charged on my horse with my sword in my hand, swearing by Allah that I desired death except for him, while he was looking at me. Abbas called out, 'O Messenger of Allah, this is your brother and your cousin, Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith. Accept his apology.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I have forgiven him; may Allah forgive him for all the enmity he showed towards me.' Then, he turned towards me and said, 'O my brother, by my life,' and I kissed his foot in the stirrup." It is said that Abu Sufyan passed away in Madinah after his brother Nawfal ibn al-Harith, four months and thirteen nights after him. Others say he passed away in the twentieth year. Umar ibn al-Khattab led the funeral prayer for him, and he was buried in the cemetery of al-Baqi in the grave that Aqil ibn Abi Talib had dug for himself three days before he died. "I have mentioned the Islam of my father Sufyan in the Conquest of Makkah, as previously mentioned." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about him in his summary.

[Machine] I heard Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir say, "Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib, whose name was al-Mughirah, passed away in the year twenty. Umar ibn al-Khattab performed the funeral prayer for him."
[Machine] "Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn Abdul-Muttalib was the most beloved person to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the Quraysh, and he was harsh with him. But when he embraced Islam, he became the most beloved person to the people."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith is the best among my family." It is authentic according to the condition of Muslim and al-Dhahabi did not mention it in his summary.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, "The chief of the boys of Paradise is Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn Abdul-Muttalib." He said, "He got his hair trimmed in Mina, and there were lice in his head, so he cut it off and died. It is believed that he is a martyr." Adh-Dhahabi did not mention it in the abridgment.
[Machine] "I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn. I saw him with no one except me and Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn Abdul-Muttalib. He was holding the reins of the Messenger of Allah's mule while he was riding it, and Abu Sufyan was eager to rush towards the polytheists." This hadith is authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs (i.e., Abu Bakr and Umar), but it has not been included in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
[Machine] A man had some dates with him and he brought them to the Prophet ﷺ to sell them. The Prophet ﷺ borrowed some dates from Bint Hakeem and gave them to the man. Then he said, "I had some dates with me, but they were dry". Then he said, "This is how the believing servants of Allah are, and Allah does not have mercy on a nation in which the strong do not give the weak their rights without being harsh". Abu Sufyan did not narrate anything from the Prophet ﷺ except this one hadith, and he did not establish its chain of narration except from Shu'ba, other than Ghundar. Abu Al-Abbas As-Sayyari informed us, Abu Al-Muwajih informed me, and I am Abdan. My father narrated to me from Shu'ba, from Samaak, who said, "We were with Mudrik ibn Al-Muhallab in Sijistan, and I heard an elderly man narrating from Abu Sufyan ibn Al-Harith, from the Prophet ﷺ, so he mentioned him and did not hear Abdullah ibn Abu Sufyan narrating anything from his father".
[Machine] "And from the offspring of Al-Harith ibn Abdul-Muttalib was Abu Sufyan ibn Al-Harith ibn Abdul-Muttalib who accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Indeed, he is among the best of my family.' And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, he is the leader of the young men of the people of Paradise.' He showed patience with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the battle of Hunayn. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him in the darkness of the morning and said, 'Who is this?' He replied, 'I am the son of your mother, O Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'He had his hair cut by the barber, and he only cut a tuft of hair from his head, and no blood came out. He continued like that until he passed away, and this was in the year twenty. Umar ibn Al-Khattab prayed the funeral prayer for him, and he used to meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a certain route, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was going out to Makkah for the conquest. He embraced Islam before the conquest."
[Machine] "Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn Abdul-Muttalib, his name is al-Mughira, died in the year twenty and was prayed upon by Umar ibn al-Khattab."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah does not bless a nation in which the weak are not able to claim their rights from the strong, and the strong are not just and fair." So, the old man whom Uthman bin Jabala did not mention, but Shu'bah mentioned him from Simak, named him Ghundar, except that he did not mention Abu Sufyan in the chain.
[Machine] A man had some dates with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he came to him to offer them to him. The Prophet ﷺ borrowed some dates from Khawlah bint Hakim and gave them to him, saying, "I used to have some dates with me, but they were not good. This is how the believing servants of Allah behave. Indeed, Allah does not show mercy to a nation where the weak are not given their right without justice being tampered with."
