٢٧۔ كِتَابُ مَعْرِفَةِ الصَّحَابَةِ ؓ
[Machine] Mus'ab ibn Abdullah al-Zubayri narrated to me, he said: "Umar ibn Al-Khattab ibn Nufail ibn Abdul-Uzza ibn Riayah ibn Abdullah ibn Qurt ibn Razzah ibn Adi ibn Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib ibn Fhir, they all said: His mother was Hantamah bint Hashim ibn Al-Mughirah ibn Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Makhzum. And her mother was Ash-Shifa bint Abdul Qais ibn Adi ibn Saad ibn Taym, she was known as Abu Hafs." He was appointed as the successor on the day Abu Bakr died, which was on a Tuesday, eight days remained in the month of Jumada Al-Akhirah.

[Machine] "As if he is on a camel under a cold drizzle, saying, 'O servants of Allah, migrate and do not abandon (your homes), and let anyone among you fear (lit. guard against) the rabbit, as it may scare it away with pebbles or throw stones at it, so that it eats it, but swords and spears are to remind you of chastity and nobility.'"
[Machine] Omar ibn Abdul Aziz asked Abu Bakr ibn Sulaiman ibn Abi Hathma about what was written during the time of the caliphate of the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him. Abu Bakr ibn Sulaiman replied that Omar ibn Khattab wrote first during the caliphate of Abu Bakr. Omar then asked who was the first person to write among the Amir al-Mu'minin (commander of the faithful)? Abu Bakr ibn Sulaiman said, "Ash-Shifa' informed me that Omar ibn Al-Khattab wrote a letter to the governor of Iraq instructing him to send two men to ask about Iraq and its people. The governor of Iraq sent Labid ibn Rabiah and Adi ibn Hatim. when they arrived in Madinah, they parked their camels in the mosque courtyard and entered the mosque. There they saw Amr ibn Al-Aas and said to him, 'Seek permission for us from Amr al-Mu'minin.' Amr al-Mu'minin replied, 'By Allah, you have hit the mark. His name is the Amir and we are the believers.' Amr al-Mu'minin then stood up, entered and said the salaam to Omar ibn Al-Khattab, 'Peace be upon you, O Amir al-Mu'minin.' Omar said, 'What do you think of this name, O son of Al-Aas? My Lord knows. You need to take back what you just said.' They replied, 'Indeed, Labid ibn Rabiah and Adi ibn Hatim have arrived. They parked their camels in the mosque courtyard and have come to speak with you.' So, the book began from that moment on." Ash-Shifa' is the paternal aunt of Abu Bakr ibn Sulaiman.

[Machine] When Umar arrived in Sham, he encountered a woman in labor. Umar dismounted his camel, took off his sandals or shoes, and took hold of the reins of his mount. He then attended to the woman in labor. Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah said to Umar, "You have done a great act, O Amir al-Mu'minin (Commander of the Faithful). You took off your footwear and offered your mount, and attended to the woman in labor." Umar then struck Abu Ubaidah on the chest with his hand and said, "Oh, if anyone other than you were to say this, O Abu Ubaidah, you were the least among people, and Allah honored you through Islam. So, whatever honor you seek from anyone other than Allah, He will humiliate you." Adh-Dhahabi remained silent about this in his summary.

[Machine] I accompanied Umar to Sham (Syria) and we stayed in a place. Then a sharecropper came and guided us to Amir al-Mu'minin (Umar) until he approached him. When the sharecropper saw Umar, he prostrated and Umar said, "What is this prostration?" The sharecropper replied, "This is how we treat kings." Umar said, "Prostrate to your Lord who created you." The sharecropper then said, "O Amir al-Mu'minin, I have prepared food for you, so come to me." Umar asked, "Do you have any idols or pictures of non-Arabs in your house?" The sharecropper said, "Yes." Umar said, "We have no need for anything in your house, but go and send us a loaf of bread without adding anything to it." He went and sent the bread. Umar ate from it and then said to his servant, "Do you have any of that wine (nabidh)?" The servant said, "Yes." Umar said, "Send it to us." He brought it and poured it into a container, then smelled it and found it to have a foul smell. He poured water onto it and smelled it again but found it to have a foul smell. He repeated this process three times, then drank it. After drinking, Umar said, "If there is anything harmful in your drink, do this with it (referring to pouring water onto it)." Muslim al-A'war left it.

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Allah, support the religion through 'Umar ibn al-Khattab." This is authentic.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Allah, honor Islam with Umar ibn Al-Khattab or with Abu Jahl ibn Hisham." So Allah answered the supplication of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for Umar, and he built upon him the kingdom of Islam and destroyed the idols with it. (This part is missing in the original question, it seems to be a note from the questioner about Al-Dhahabi's silence on the summary).

[Machine] Umar fought the polytheists in Masjid al-Makkah and he continued to fight them from dawn until the sun was directly above his head. He then said, "I have become blind." He sat down, and a man wearing a red cloak and a Qumissiyya shirt with a handsome face came to him and uncovered his eyes. He asked them, "What do you want from this man?" They said, "No, by Allah, except that he has been affected." He said, "What an excellent man he is, who has chosen a religion for himself. Leave him, for what he has chosen for himself. Do you think the Banu 'Adi tribe would be pleased if Umar was killed? No, by Allah, the Banu 'Adi tribe would not be pleased." Umar said that day, "O enemies of Allah, by Allah, if we had found three hundred, we would have driven you out from here." I asked my father afterwards, "Who was that man who defended you that day?" He said, "That was Al-Aas ibn Wa'il, the father of Amr ibn Al-Aas."

Umar said, "So I stood up and I was stronger than him in physical strength and more powerful than him in wrestling, so I overpowered him and put his face in the dirt." Uthman came and detained me, then Umar ibn al-Khattab left angrily until he reached the Prophet ﷺ . When the Prophet ﷺ saw him and saw the anger on his face, he said, "What's wrong with you, O Abu Hafs?" He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I came to a group sitting at the door of the mosque and the prayer had already been established. Among them was Abu Jahl al-Laithi. The two men stood up and repeated the conversation, then Umar said, 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, Uthman did not help him except by letting him spend the night with his wife, so he wants to thank him for it.' Uthman heard him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, don't you hear what Umar is saying in front of you?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, the mercy of Allah is with Umar. If you had brought me the head of the wicked one, I would have preferred that.'" Umar stood up, then the Prophet ﷺ called him when he was far away and said, "Come, O Umar, where did you intend to go?" He said, "I intended to bring you the head of the wicked one." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Sit down until I inform you about the sufficiency of the Lord from the prayer of Abu Jahl al-Laithi. Indeed, Allah has angels in the sky of this world who are in constant humility, not lifting their heads until the Hour is established. When the Hour is established, they lift their heads and say, 'Our Lord, we have not worshiped You as You deserve to be worshiped.' 'Umar bin Al-Khattab asked, "What do they say, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "As for the inhabitants of the lower heaven, they say, 'Glory be to the King, the Sovereign,' and as for the inhabitants of the second heaven, they say, 'Glory be to the Ever-Living, who never dies.' Say it, O Umar, in your prayer." 'Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, what about the one you taught me and commanded me to say in my prayer?" He said, "Say it once and say it at another time." The one he commanded me to say was, "I seek refuge in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath, and I seek refuge in You from You, the majesty of Your face."

[Machine] He (Umar) said: "It is possible that you have made a mistake in assuming, or you are still following your previous religion of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era). I remember that you used to be their soothsayer." He replied: "I have not seen anything like what happened today, where a Muslim man is being welcomed with such honor." Umar said: "I swear that I will not ask you again if you were their soothsayer in the Jahiliyyah." He said: "So what is so astonishing about what has brought you here?" Then he narrated a lengthy Hadith without any reference. The Hadith is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari by this chain of narrators.

[Machine] "Indeed, there is a plague in it. So it was said to him, 'O Amir al-Mu'minin, it is not appropriate for you to attack it, as if it were to occur while you are there, you should not leave it.' So he turned back, heading towards the city. While we were traveling at night, he said to me, 'Turn away from the road.' So I turned away and he dismounted from his camel and put his head on its arm and slept, while I could not sleep. Then he said to me, 'What is it with me and them? They turned me away from Sham (Syria).' Then he mounted and I did not ask him anything until I thought I was mixing with the people. I said to him, 'Why did you say what you said when you woke up?' He said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'There will be sent forth from between Hims and the Olive trees seventy thousand, without any accountability upon them.' If Allah brings me back from this journey, I will surely bear my family, my people, and my wealth until he lowers Hims.' That is when Ridaan (a companion) was killed."

[Machine] "That the Muslims should establish a place for migration (Hijrah) and a residence for jihad." So Saad sent a man from the Ansar called Al-Harith bin Salama to scout a location in Al-Kufa that day. Saad went there with the people and drew the outline of our mosque and marked it with lines. Al-Sha'bi said, "In Al-Kufa, the tribes of Al-Khuzami, Ash-Shihi, Al-Uqhuwan, and Shaqa'iq Al-Nu'man resided. The Arabs used to call it 'Khadd Al-'Adhra' in the pre-Islamic era." So they returned and wrote to Umar ibn Al-Khattab, who responded, "Leave it." As a result, people moved to Al-Kufa. Al-Haytham bin Adi fell (died).
