27. Book of the Companions
٢٧۔ كِتَابُ مَعْرِفَةِ الصَّحَابَةِ ؓ
[Machine] When the day of the conquest of Mecca came, 'Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl fled. His wife, Umm Hakim bint Al-Harith ibn Hisham, a wise and intelligent woman, had embraced Islam and asked the Prophet ﷺ for protection for her husband. The Prophet commanded her to send him back, so she went in search of him and said to him, "I have come to you from the best and most noble of people, and I have given you my protection." He accepted her protection and returned with her. When they approached Mecca, the Prophet ﷺ said to his companions, "Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl will come to you as a believing emigrant, so do not insult his father. Insulting the dead hurts the living and does not reach the dead." When he reached the door of the Prophet ﷺ, the Prophet became delighted and stood up, showing joy for his arrival.

[Machine] "During the conquest, Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl fled purposely to Yemen. On that day, Umm Hakim bint al-Harith ibn Hisham, who had embraced Islam by then and was under the protection of Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl, sought permission from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to request her husband's hand in marriage. He granted her permission and ensured her safety. She departed with a guide towards Rome, who tried to provoke her affection for him. However, she remained faithful and drawn to her husband until they arrived at a group of people from Makkah. She sought their help and they protected her. Her husband had already reached the region of Tihamah, where he had embarked on a ship. When he boarded, he called upon Lat and al-Uzza (two idols) and the people on the ship told him it was not permissible for anyone to make any invocation except to Allah alone, sincerely. Ikrimah vowed that if he were to be saved even at sea, he would return to Muhammad ﷺ . Thus, Ikrimah returned with his wife and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , pledged allegiance to him, and was accepted by him. Another man from among the Quraysh entered when the Bani Bakr defeated him, fleeing from his wife, whom he mistreated and insulted for running away. Urwah said, 'He was martyred on the day of Ajnadayn among the Muslims, and then among the Quraysh, and then among the Bani Makhzum. This man was Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl.'" [Machine] 'Akrama ibn Abi Jahl, when I reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I said, "O Muhammad, this person informed me that you have granted me safety." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You are indeed safe." So, I said, "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner, and that you are the servant and Messenger of Allah. You are the most righteous, truthful, and faithful among the people." 'Akrama said, "I said this while bowing my head in humility. Then, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, seek forgiveness for me from every enmity that I have shown towards anyone, or any assembly in which I have exhibited polytheism.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'O Allah, forgive 'Akrama for every enmity that he has shown towards me or any assembly he has joined, seeking to oppose Your path.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, guide me to the best of what you know so that I may learn it.' He said, 'Say, "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. I strive in His cause." Then 'Akrama said, 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, not a single coin did I leave that I would have spent in opposing the path of Allah, except that I spent double of it in the way of Allah. And I did not engage in any battle in opposition to the path of Allah, except that I received double of it in the way of Allah. Then I endeavored in fighting until I was martyred on the day of Ajnadeen during the caliphate of Abu Bakr, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had used me during his last pilgrimage to verify the weights used on the scales. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, and on that day, 'Akrama died with great honor.'

I said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I have not left any expense that I have not spent its equivalent in the sake of Allah Almighty." "The chain is authentic, but they did not include this narration," he replied. It is correct, but incomplete.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I saw in a dream that Abu Jahl came to me and pledged allegiance." When Khalid ibn al-Walid embraced Islam, it was said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that Allah had made your dream come true, O Messenger of Allah. This is Khalid embracing Islam. He said, "There will be others besides him." This continued until Ikrimah ibn Abu Jahl embraced Islam, and this was the fulfillment of his dream. "This Hadith is authentic according to the conditions of both Bukhari and Muslim."
