He was martyred in the year forty of the Hijra of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the age of sixty-three. He was killed on a Friday, the twenty-first day of Ramadan, and he passed away on a Sunday. سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَكْرِ بْنَ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ يَقُولُ «وَلِيَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ خَمْسَ سِنِينَ وَقُتِلَ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعِينَ مِنْ مُهَاجِرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ ابْنُ ثَلَاثٍ وَسِتِّينَ سَنَةً قُتِلَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ لِلْحَادِي وَالْعِشْرِينَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ وَمَاتَ يَوْمَ الْأَحَدِ وَدُفِنَ بِالْكُوفَةِ» حذفه الذهبي من التلخيص لضعفه
