27. Book of the Companions (48/53)

[Machine] As for the two sheikhs, they did not mention anything beyond the virtues. We have started in the first mention of the companion by discussing his lineage and death, then we mentioned what is valid about their conditions from their virtues that they did not mention. So I did not forget to mention Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi and his peers in knowledge.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ divorced Hafsa bint Umar, then her uncles Qudamah and Uthman ibn Mazh'oon visited her. She cried and said, "By Allah, he did not divorce me due to any displeasure." Then the Prophet ﷺ came and said, "Gabriel ﷺ informed me to go back to Hafsa, as she observes fasting and upholds prayers, and she is your wife in Paradise." Adh-Dhahabi remained silent about this incident in his summary.
[Machine] It is narrated that the Prophet ﷺ divorced Hafsah. Then Gabriel ﷺ came to him and said, "O Muhammad, you have divorced Hafsah while she is a righteous and obedient fasting woman, and she is your wife in Paradise. So, reconsider divorcing her." This statement has been omitted by Az-Zahabi in the abridgment.
27.345 [Machine] The mention of the Mother of the Believers, Umm Salamah bint Abi Umayyah
[Machine] "And among those who migrated with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Medina was Abu Salama, Abdullah ibn Abdul Asad, and his wife Umm Salama bint Abi Umaya."
[Machine] "Umm Salamah's name was Rumlah. She was the first female to enter the city of Medina as an emigrant. She was with Abu Salamah before the Prophet ﷺ and was previously married to Abu Salamah, Abdullah bin Abdul Asad bin Hilal bin Abdullah bin Umara bin Makhzum. He was the first to emigrate to the land of Abyssinia and participated in the Battle of Badr. Abu Salamah passed away during the time of the Prophet ﷺ . Umm Salamah gave birth to Salamah, Umar, Durrah, and Zainab. Their mother was Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ . The Prophet ﷺ married Umm Salamah after Abu Salamah passed away, and her son Umar bin Abu Salamah narrated this hadith from the Prophet ﷺ ."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ: When you attend dying man, you should say good words, for the angels say Amin to what you say. When Abu Salamah died, I said: What should I say, Messenger of Allah? He said: O Allah forgive him, and give us something good in exchange. She said: So Allah gave me Muhammad ﷺ in exchange for him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3115)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When any of you experience a calamity, say 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.' O Allah, I seek reward from You for my calamity and ask You to replace it with something better.' I used to say this when I had any difficulty. When my waiting period after the death of my husband ended, Abu Bakr proposed to me and I turned him down. Then, Umar proposed to me and I turned him down. The Prophet ﷺ sent someone to propose to me on his behalf, and I said, 'Welcome to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his messenger! Please convey to him that I am a widow and I have no guardian except Allah. As for your saying that I am a widow, Allah will take care of my children. And as for considering yourself as a replacement, I will pray to Allah to replace you with someone better. As for the guardians, there is no one among them who can testify and there is no one absent whose permission is needed. So, the Prophet ﷺ sent me a message saying, 'As for your saying that you are a widow, Allah will take care of your children. And as for your saying that there is no one except me, I will supplicate to Allah to remove your difficulty. As for the guardians, there is no one among them who can testify and there is no one absent whose permission is needed.' So, she said to her son, 'Stand up, O Umar, and let the Messenger of Allah ﷺ marry you to her.' The Prophet ﷺ then married them. He said to her, 'I will not deprive you of what I have given your sister, Fulanah, including two garments and a cushion filled with palm fibers.' The Prophet ﷺ used to visit her while Zainab was breastfeeding her child. Whenever the Prophet ﷺ came, she would give the child to him and he would place her (the child) in her (Zainab's) chamber to breastfeed her. So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was generous and honorable. One day, Ammar ibn Yasir visited her when the Prophet ﷺ intended to visit her. Zainab hid in her chamber and said, 'Leave this disgraced and wretched woman (referring to herself) who has caused trouble for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and looked around the house, saying, 'Where is Zunab? Why can't I see Zunab?' Zainab said, 'Ammar came and took her away.' The Prophet ﷺ then left. He was planning to visit her one day when Ammar came and took her away."

[Machine] That Umm Salamah, the daughter of Abu Umaiyah, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married her, she took hold of her garment as a means to prevent her from leaving her house. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you wish, I will grant you increase and I will consider you as a virgin for seven and a divorcee for three."
[Machine] Umm Salamah's name was Hind, daughter of Abu Umayyah. Her father's name was Suhail, son of Al-Mughirah, son of Abdullah, son of Umara, son of Makhzum. Her mother's name was Atikah, daughter of Amr, son of Rabiah, son of Malik, son of Khuzaymah, son of Al-Qamah, son of Firas, son of Ghanim, son of Malik, son of Kinanah. She was married to Abu Salamah, Abdullah, son of Abdul-Asad, son of Hilal. He migrated with her to the land of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) in both migrations. There, she gave birth to Zainab, and later she gave birth to Salamah and Umar, and Durrat, daughter of Bani Abu Salamah.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "Verily, Aisha has a characteristic that no one else possesses." He was then asked about this after he married Umm Salama. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, remained silent. It was then known that Umm Salama had possessed that characteristic in his presence.

27.346 [Machine] The Mention of Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan, who was previously married to Ubaidullah ibn Jahsh al-Asadi, from the tribe of Khuza'a. He passed away in Abyssinia (Ethiopia) while they were immigrating from Mecca. He converted to Christianity and Allah confirmed Islam for Umm Habibah and her migration. Her husband also converted to Christianity and passed away, but Umm Habibah refused to convert. Allah confirmed Islam and migration for her until she arrived in Medina. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her and Uthman ibn Affan married her. Al-Zuhri said, "They claimed that the Prophet ﷺ wrote to the Negus and married her to him, but this is not confirmed."

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent 'Amr ibn Umaya al-Damri to the Negus to propose to Umm Habiba bint Abi Sufyan for him. She was under the guardianship of Ubaidullah ibn Jahsh. The Negus then married her to him and gave her a dowry of four hundred dinars on behalf of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . And in her respect, the verse was revealed: 'And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, "Keep your wife and fear Allah," while you concealed within yourself that which Allah is to disclose. And you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him. So when Zaid had no longer any need for her, We married her to you...' (Quran 33:37). She used to boast among the Prophet's wives, saying, 'Allah married me to His Messenger, and He married you to your fathers, relatives, and Hamna bint Jahsh, who was menstruating at the time, and she was under the guardianship of Abdur Rahman ibn Awf and she was the sister of Zainab bint Jash.'"

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ arrived in Medina, and Zaynab bint Jahsh was one of those who emigrated with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She was a beautiful woman. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her on behalf of Zaid bin Haritha, but she said, "I do not wish to marry him." She was previously married to someone from the Quraish tribe. The Prophet ﷺ said, "But I have already accepted him for you." So Zaid married her.
Story of the Prophet ﷺ marriage to Zaynab b. Jaḥsh
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Zayd b. Ḥārithah’s house looking for him. Zayd was called Zayd b. Muḥammad ˹at that time˺. Then when an hour had gone by, he said, "Where is Zayd?" He then came to his house looking for him but didn’t find him. Zaynab was standing next to him in regular housework attire (or nightwear) then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then he avoided her. She said, "He’s not here, Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ˹please˺ come in." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ˹however,˺ refused to enter and she was surprised at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He turned around and was saying something under his breath that almost could not be understood from him except, maybe, for, "Glory to the Perfection of Allah, the All Mighty, Glory to the Perfection of the changer of the hearts."
Zayd came ˹back˺ to his house and his wife informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the his house, and Zayd said, "Didn’t you ask him to come in?" She said, "He avoided to do that and refused ˹to come in˺." He said, "Did you hear anything?" She said, "I heard him saying something as he turned around but I couldn’t understand him ˹fully but˺ I heard him say, 'Glory to the Perfection of Allah, the All Mighty, Glory to the Perfection of the changer of the hearts.'”
Then Zayd came to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "It’s reached me that you came to my house but you didn’t come in, Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Perhaps you have a liking for Zaynab and I shall part from her." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Hold on to your wife." However, Zayd did not have a way to ˹approach˺ her after that day. He would come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to inform him ˹of this˺ but he ˹would˺ say, "Hold on to your wife." Then Zayd parted from her and left her, and she completed her ʿIddah.
˹Soon after˺ while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting speaking to ʿĀʾishah, he was ˹suddenly˺ overcome by unconsciousness. Then when ˹the episode˺ had lifted, he smiled saying, "Who will go and tell Zaynab that Allah has married me to her from ˹above˺ the sky?", and then he recited, “...and when you say to the one Allah had favored upon and you had favored upon, hold on to your wife…” (Aḥzāb 33:37) the whole story. Then ʿĀʾishah said, "Then I started to wonder about what has reached us about her beauty. On top of that, she is the greatest runner of affairs and the best of them. Allah married her from ˹above˺ the sky, and I said, she boasts to us about this." Then ʿĀʾishah said, "Then Salmá, the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, insisted, then she told her about it, and she gave her clarifications for it."

[Machine] "Zaynab bint Jahsh recommended that she be carried on the bed of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) and a bier be placed upon it." It is said that Abu Bakr As-Siddiq carried it [the bier]. "And Umar ibn Al-Khattab passed by two grave diggers digging Zaynab's grave on a hot summer day and he said, 'If only I had struck them with a lash.' And it was the first time anyone had been struck with a lash on a grave in Al-Baqi'."
[Machine] I saw Abu Ahmad ibn Jahsh carrying the bed of Zainab while he was blind and crying, and I heard Umar say, "O Abu Ahmad, leave the bed so that people do not criticize you for carrying it." Abu Ahmad then said, "This is the thing through which we have obtained all goodness, and indeed it cools the heat that I feel." Then Umar said, "Stick to it, stick to it."
[Machine] Zainab bint Jahsh did not leave behind a dinar or a dirham, she used to donate everything she could and was a refuge for the poor. She left her house, which was sold by Walid ibn Abdul Malik when the mosque was demolished for fifty thousand dirhams.
[Machine] Ummu Ukasha, the daughter of Muhassin, was asked: How old was Zainab, the daughter of Jash, when she died? She replied: We arrived in Medina for migration when she was thirty-two years old, and she died in the twentieth year. Umar ibn Uthman said: My father used to say that Zainab, the daughter of Jash, died at the age of fifty-three.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his wives, "The quickest of you to reach for something is the one with the longest hand." Aisha said, "Whenever we gathered in the house of one of us after the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , we would extend our hands towards the wall and compete to see whose hand was longest. We continued to do this until Zainab bint Jahsh, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , passed away. She was a short woman and not the longest among us. It was then that we realized that the Prophet ﷺ meant charity by mentioning the length of the hand." He said, "Zainab used to engage in handicrafts with her hands, such as dyeing and sewing, and she used to donate in the path of Allah Almighty."
Zaynab used to say to the Prophet ﷺ, "I’m truly the best ˹one of all˺ your women; I’m better than them in marriage, and most honorable in covering ˹modestly˺, most closer in relation, and al-Raḥmān married me to you from above the Throne, and Jibrīl was the intermediary in that, and I am the daughter of your paternal aunt; you do not have from among your women one closer ˹in relations˺ to you other than me."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'Did I not ransom you? Did I not free forty of your people?' " Al-Dhahabi remained silent about this in his summary.

The statement by Al-Dhahabi in the summarization remains silent on this matter.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raided the dwellings of the Banu Mustaliq tribe and took one-fifth of their wealth. He then distributed it amongst the people, giving two shares to the horsemen and one share to the foot soldiers. Juwayriyyah bint al-Harith ibn Abi Dirar fell under the lot of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas al-Ansari. She was under the guardianship of her cousin Safwan ibn Malik ibn Jadhima, known as Safwan bin Malak. When he was killed, Thabit ibn Qays wrote a document freeing her for nine ounces of gold. She was a very beautiful woman, and whenever anyone saw her, they would be captivated by her beauty. While the Prophet ﷺ was sitting with me, Juwayriyyah came to ask him about her situation. By Allah, I did not see the Prophet ﷺ look at her until I disliked her appearance before him. I knew that he would see in her what I had seen. Juwayriyyah said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am Juwayriyyah bint al-Harith, the daughter of the leader of my people. I was captured and lost my freedom, and I fell to the lot of Thabit ibn Qays, who wrote a document for my freedom for nine ounces of gold." The Prophet ﷺ asked her, "Do you want something better than that?" She asked, "What is it?" He replied, "I will pay off your debt and marry you." She said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then I have done it." The news spread among the people, and they said, "The in-laws of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ are taking captives and setting them free. So, free those who are in your hands from among the captives of the Banu Mustaliq." They freed a hundred families as a result of marrying Juwayriyyah. A'isha said, "I do not know of any woman who brought more blessings to her people than Juwayriyyah." This was the end of the events of the Battle of Muraysi.

Is there anything to eat? She said: Messenger of Allah, I swear by God, there is no food with us except a bone of goat which my freed maid-servant was given as sadaqa. Upon this he said: Bring that to me, for it (the sadaqa) has reached its destination. (Using translation from Muslim 1073a)

[Machine] He heard Anas ibn Malik saying: "When the Prophet ﷺ conquered Khaybar, he chose Safiyyah bint Huyay for himself, and he came out with her walking behind him. Then I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ resting his foot for her to mount it, and when they reached the Sada' al-Sahba, he married her to himself, and he made a wedding feast for her in a tent. He ordered me to invite those around him, and that was the feast of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Mus'ab said: "And she is Safiyyah bint Huyay bin Akhtab bin Sa'eed bin Tha'labah bin 'Ubayd bin al-Khazraj bin Abi Habib bin al-Nadr bin al-Nahham bin Yanhum from the children of Israel, from the lineage of Musa upon him be peace. Her mother was Barrah bint al-Samaw'al, who died in the time of Mu'awiyah." Al-Dhahabi stopped discussing it further in his summary.

When morning came and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he raised his voice in takbeer (saying "Allahu Akbar") and Abu Ayub had a sword with him. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, she was a newlywed woman who had just gotten married, and I had killed her father, brother, and husband. So I did not trust her with you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and said to him, "Well done."

[Machine] I am Mus'ab Bin Kidaam. The wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Maymuna bint Al-Harith bin Hazn bin Bujair bin Al-Harim bin Ruwaiba bin Abdullah bin Hilal bin Amer bin Sa'sa'a told me. Her mother is Hind bint Zuhair bin Al-Harith bin Hamata bin Harith from the tribe of Himyar.

[Machine] Rasulullah married her. Her name was Maymunah bint Al-Muttalib. Al-Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib married her to Rasulullah. He granted her a dowry of 10 miles of land near Makkah. She was the last woman whom Rasulullah married, and this occurred in the seventh year of the Qadiyyah Umrah. Ibn Umar said, "Maymunah passed away in the sixty-first year. She was the last wife of the Prophet to pass away. At the time of her death, she was eighty or eighty-one years old, and she had wrinkled skin." Adh-Dhahabi did not mention this in his summary.

[Machine] "The name of my aunt was Maymuna Bint Harith, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ named her Maymuna." Sahih, Al-Dhahabi said it is authentic.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left in the year before the year of Hudaybiyah, performing Umrah, in the month of Dhul-Qa'dah, which is the month in which the pagans prevented him from the Sacred Mosque. When he reached Yajaj, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib sent a proposal to Maimunah bint Al-Harith ibn Hazn Al-Amiriyyah and married her. She then entrusted her affairs to Al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, her brother. He was married to her by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Prophet ﷺ stayed in Sarif for some time until Maimunah came, and he built a house for her in Sarif. Allah the Almighty decreed the death of Maimunah bint Al-Harith after that, and she passed away where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had built the house for her.

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ married Maymunah bint Al-Harith and stayed in Makkah for three days. Then, Huwaytib ibn Abd Al-Uzza came to him with a group of Quraysh people on the third day and said to him, "Your time has expired, so leave us." He responded, "What harm would it be if you left me? I would have married among you and prepared food for you. Would you have attended?" They replied, "We have no need for your food, so leave us." Then, he left with Maymunah bint Al-Harith and married her extravagantly.
