27. Book of the Companions (49/53)
[Machine] As for the two sheikhs, they did not mention anything beyond the virtues. We have started in the first mention of the companion by discussing his lineage and death, then we mentioned what is valid about their conditions from their virtues that they did not mention. So I did not forget to mention Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi and his peers in knowledge.
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married her lawfully and built with her a lawful family. He built with her a house extravagantly, and she died in that same house the night he built it. She was my aunt, so I descended into her grave along with Ibn Abbas. When we laid her in the grave, her head was too tall, so I took off my cloak, gathered it, and placed it by her head. Ibn Abbas took it and threw it, placing it by her head as a sign. Her hair was shaved during Hajj, and her head was bald. Between Sarif and Makkah, there were twelve miles."
[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ married while in a state of ihram," said Amr. Amr mentioned this to Az-Zuhri, who then asked, "O Amr, who do they say it is?" I said, "They say it is Maymuna." Ibn Shihab narrated to me that Yazid bin al-Asamm informed him that "the Prophet ﷺ married her while it was halal." Amr said to Ibn Shihab, "Do you make an Arab urinate on your heels like Ibn Abbas?" Ibn Shihab said, "She is his paternal aunt." Amr said, "She is also the paternal aunt of Ibn Abbas."
[Machine] Indeed, Allah has guided you until He made you among the family of His prophet. And by Allah, Maymuna is blessed, and you were thrown by your spear upon your prey. Surely, it was from the perfection and closeness to Allah, Almighty, and it connected us to our relatives.
[Machine] The messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one night from me, so I closed the door on him. He came to seek permission, but I refused to open it. He said, "I swear that you will not open it for me." I said to him, "You will go to your wives in my night." He said, "I did not do anything, but I found traces of urine."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The sisters are believers: Maymunah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , and her sister Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith, and her sister Salma bint al-Harith, the wife of Hamzah, and Asma' bint 'Umays, their mother's sister."
[Machine] Ibn Abbas said, "This is Maymunah. When you lift her bier, do not shake or move it, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had nine wives, he would divide his time among eight and leave one without division." Ata said, "That one is Safiyyah."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, may peace be upon him, married Maymuna bint al-Harith ibn Frawah. She was the sister of Umm al-Fadl, the wife of Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib. He married her when he was performing umrah in Makkah, and she offered herself to the Prophet, may peace be upon him. In her, the verse was revealed: "And a believing woman may offer herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet wishes to marry her - [this is] only for you and not for the believers" (Quran 33:50). Then, she accompanied him to Madinah. Before that, she was with Frawah ibn Abdal Uzza ibn Assad from the Banu Tamim ibn Dawdan tribe. This was mentioned by al-Dhahabi in his summary.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, married Zainab bint Khuzayma, who was previously married to Abdullah ibn Jahsh and he was killed on the day of Uhud.

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ married a woman from the Banu Ghifar tribe. When she entered upon him and removed her clothes, he noticed the whiteness of her skin. The Prophet ﷺ told her, "Cover yourself with your clothes and join your family." He also ordered her to be given the marriage gift saying, "This is not what a generous person does, it is the dowry for Umm Salamah bint al-Nu'man al-Ghifariyyah." Ibn Ma'in says he is not trustworthy.

[Machine] Nu'man ibn Abi Jawn al-Kindi arrived and he used to stay in the land of his father after the drinking water. So he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as a Muslim and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ , would you allow me to marry the most beautiful woman among the Arabs? She used to be married to her cousin, but he passed away and she has desired you and proposed to you." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married her for twelve ounces of gold and a horse. Nu'man ibn Abi Jawn said, "May sorrow be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, send someone to take my wives to you, for I am leaving with your Messenger." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Usayd As-Sa'di. When they arrived, she sat in her house and gave permission for him to enter. Abu Usayd said, "The wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do not compete with men." Abu Usayd continued, "I sent a message to the Prophet ﷺ and he made things easy for me. He said there should be a curtain between you and any men you talk to, except for those who are forbidden to you." She accepted and Abu Usayd said, "I stayed with her for three days, and then I carried her on a camel to Medina and settled her in Bani Sa'dah. The women of the area came to her and welcomed her, and they praised her beauty." Abu Usayd said, "Then I returned to the Prophet ﷺ while he was in Bani 'Amr ibn 'Awf and told him what happened. He entered her room along with the women who wanted to see her because of her beauty. She said to him, 'You are from the kings. If you want to enjoy yourself with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , seek refuge from me, for you will be indulged by him, and he will desire you.'"

[Machine] Abu Ubaydah Mamarr bin Al-Muthanna then married the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the delegation of Kindah Qutaylah bin Qays, the sister of Ash'ath bin Qays, arrived in the tenth year. Then, he fell ill halfway through Safar and passed away on Monday, having been bedridden for two days in the month of Rabi al-Awwal. She did not meet him nor did he have relations with her. Some of them timed their marriage to her and claimed that he married her a month before his death. Others claimed that he married her during his illness. And some claimed that he recommended that Qutaylah have the choice, and if she wanted, she could choose marriage. So, Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl married her in Hadramaut. Abu Bakr was informed about it and said, "I intended to punish them." Umar bin Al-Khattab said, "She is not one of the mothers of the believers, and the Prophet ﷺ did not have relations with her, nor did he hit her with a veil." Some claimed that she apostatized.

Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Mariah b. Shamun, who was gifted to him by the Muqawqis (Cyrus, man of the Caucasus), the ruler of Alexandria. She came with her sister Sirin and a eunuch called Mabur. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gifted Sirin to Hassan b. Thabit. Coptic Muqawqis and them were Christians. Mariah bore Ibrahim to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in the eighth year of Hijrah. Ibrahim died in Madinah when he was eighteen months old.

[Machine] Maryam and her cousin accompanied the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. She claimed that she fell and continued to carry a child. She said that her cousin separated her from him. The people of falsehood and deceit accused her of wanting a child from someone other than her husband. Her mother did not produce much milk, so she bought a lactating sheep to feed him with her milk. His flesh improved because of it. Aisha said that one day, he was brought to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and he asked her, "How do you see him?" She replied, "Whoever is fed with sheep's flesh has good flesh." He said, "And similarities as well." She expressed jealousy, so the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ordered Ali to take a sword and strike the neck of Maryam's cousin wherever he found him. She said that Ali went and found the cousin sitting on a palm tree, eating dates. When he saw Ali approaching with the sword, he became frightened, causing his cloth to fall and revealing that he had nothing that men possess.

Hubbab intimidated them with his spear while she was in her litter, and the woman was pregnant as they claimed. When she was on the verge of giving birth, I exposed her belly, so her father-in-law blessed it and his spear fell. He said, "No man comes near me except that I will strike him with an arrow." The people hesitated about him, and Abu Sufyan of the Quraysh came to him in a delegation, saying, "O man, cease your actions against us until we converse with you." Then Abu Sufyan approached him until he stood in front of him and said, "Indeed, you did not achieve what you wanted. You left with the woman in public, and our misfortune and calamity are known. Muhammad (pbuh) has not come to us thinking that we have humiliated ourselves for our misfortune. It is weakness and despair for us. By my life, we are not withholding her from her father out of necessity, but return with the woman until the voices settle and people say that we have returned her, then secretly guide her back to her father." He did as he was told, and he returned and stayed for several nights until the voices settled. Then he took her out at night and handed her over to Zaid ibn Harithah and his companion. They brought her to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh).

[Machine] Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Medina, his daughter Zainab came from Makkah with kinana or the son of kinana. They were following her in her journey. Hubbār ibn al-Aswad caught up with her and kept stabbing her camel with his spear until he caused it to stumble and what was in her belly was cast out and blood was shed. She became pregnant and the Banu Hashim and the Banu Umayyah disputed over her. The Banu Umayyah said, "We have more right to her," and she was under the care of their cousin Abu al-'As. They brought her to Hind bint Utba ibn Rabiah, and Hind used to say to her, "This is because of your father." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Zaid ibn Haritha, "Do not go until you bring Zainab to me." He said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Take my ring and give it to her." Zaid left and left his camel behind. He kept walking until he met a shepherd and asked him, "Who do you look after?" He said, "Abu al-'As." He said, "Whose are these sheep?" He said, "They belong to Zainab bint Muhammad." He walked with him for a while, then he said, "Do you mind if I give you something to give to her and not mention it to anyone?" He said, "Yes." He gave him the ring, and the shepherd went home and gave it to her. She recognized it and asked, "Who gave you this?" He said, "A man." She asked, "Where did you leave him?" He said, "In such and such a place." She remained silent until nightfall, then she went out to him. When she came to him, he said to her, "Ride on (your camel)." She said, "No, but you ride in front and I will ride behind you." So he rode in front and she rode behind him until they arrived. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "She is my best daughter who has been afflicted." Ali ibn al-Husayn heard that and went to Uruwah and said, "What story have you heard about me that is used to belittle the right of Fatimah?" Uruwah said, "By Allah, I do not like to have anything between the east and the west, and I am belittling the right of Fatimah. It belongs to her. But after that, I will never mention it."

[Machine] "In the end of this statement, the Imam Abu Bakr means that my best daughters are among my best daughters, because the news is proven to be correct from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that Fatimah, upon her be peace, is the leader of the women of this nation. It is also confirmed from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that he said, 'Fatimah is the leader of the women of the people of Paradise, except for Maryam, the daughter of Imran.' And I have also clarified in my writings that the Arabs may say 'afdal,' intending 'from the best,' but in my books, there are the rich and sufficient (explanations), if Allah, the Almighty, wills. And the Imam Abu Bakr has already clarified in his explanation of this statement, and we do not add to what he says, as he is the Imam who deserves it. However, beneath this word, there is a letter that leads to another meaning different from what he said, which is that knowledge encompasses that Zainab is older than Fatimah in age, as she was born before her. And it can be said that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, intended by his saying 'afdal' that Zainab is the greatest and oldest of my children. And Allah knows best."

The cause of her death was that when she left Makkah to go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Hubbār bin Al-Aswad and another man intercepted her. One of them pushed her, causing her to fall on a rock, which caused her to miscarry. As a result, she bled, and her pain did not cease until she died from it.

[Machine] When the people of Mecca sent their prisoners as ransom, Zainab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , sent a necklace as ransom for Abu Al-`As. Khadijah had given her the necklace, and she presented it to Abu Al-`As when he was imprisoned. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw her wearing it, he was deeply moved and said, "If you see fit, you can release her captive and return to her what belongs to her."
