27. Book of the Companions (44/53)
[Machine] As for the two sheikhs, they did not mention anything beyond the virtues. We have started in the first mention of the companion by discussing his lineage and death, then we mentioned what is valid about their conditions from their virtues that they did not mention. So I did not forget to mention Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi and his peers in knowledge.
[Machine] O successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who is this (referring to the daughter)? He said, "This is the daughter of the one who is better than me and you." He said, "And who is better than me and you except the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" Abu Bakr said, "A man who was taken during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ occupied his place in Paradise, and you and I remain."
27.283 [Machine] The mention of the caller of prayer Sa'd Alqarathi.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded Bilal to insert his finger into his ear and said, "Indeed, it is the most preferable for your voice. And indeed, the Adhan of Bilal used to be done in pairs, and his Iqamah alone. The prayer was established repeatedly. And he used to call the Adhan on Fridays when the crowd was like the size of the chaos. And when the Prophet ﷺ would go out to the two Eids, he would pass by the house of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, then by the people who sought help. Then he would begin the prayer before the sermon. Then he would say the takbirs seven times before recitation in the first rak'ah, and five times before recitation in the second rak'ah. Then he would address the people and then he would leave from the other side of the road, the road of Bani Zuraiq. Then he would sacrifice the sacrifice near the Raghaq with his own hand, with a blade. Then he would go to the house of Ammar ibn Yasir and the house of Abu Hurayrah, both made of adobe. He used to go to the two Eids walking, and return walking. And he used to say takbirs between the parts of the sermon and he would increase the takbirs in the sermon. And Bilal, when he would do the takbir in the Adhan, he would face the qiblah, then he would say "Allahu Akbar" twice. And say "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah" (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah) twice. And say "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasool Allah" (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah) twice. And face the qiblah. Then he would say "Hayya 'ala as-salah" (Come to prayer) twice. Then he would turn away from the qiblah and say "Hayya 'ala al-Falah" (Come to success) twice. Then he would face the qiblah and say "Allahu Akbar" twice, and say "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no god but Allah).

[Machine] Sa'd al-Qarathi used to be a muezzin for the people of Quba. Then Umar ibn al-Khattab transferred him and made him a muezzin for the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Al-Dhahabi did not mention him in his summary.

27.284 [Machine] The Mention of Junadah bin Abi Umayyah Al-Azdi
[Machine] "Junada, son of Abu Umayyah, son of Nizar, son of Ka'b, son of Al-Harith, son of Ka'b, son of Abdullah, son of Malik, son of Nasr, Al-Azdi, passed away in the year eighty."
«جُنَادَةُ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ نِزَارِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَالِكِ بْنِ نَصْرٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ تُوُفِّيَ سَنَةَ ثَمَانِينَ»
[Machine] "I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a group of Azd people on the day of Friday. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ invited us to a meal in front of him. We said, 'We are fasting.' He asked, 'Did you fast yesterday?' We replied, 'No.' He asked, 'Will you fast tomorrow?' We replied, 'No.' He then said, 'Break your fast, and do not fast on Fridays alone.'"

27.285 [Machine] The mention of Sawwad Ibn Qarib al-Azdi
[Machine] "A man said, 'O Commander of the faithful, do you know this passerby?' He replied, 'No, so who is he?' He said, 'He is Suwad ibn Qarib, a man from the people of Yemen who possesses honor and high status among them. He is the one who received a dream about the appearance of the Prophet ﷺ. When Umar heard this, he became angry and said, 'Are you Suwad ibn Qarib?' He answered, 'Yes.' Umar said, 'So you are the one to whom your dream showed the appearance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He replied, 'Yes.' Umar said, 'Then you are in the same state of soothsaying as you were before, and he became extremely angry and said, 'O Commander of the faithful, no one has ever treated me this way since I became a Muslim!' Umar said, 'By Allah, we were in a worse state of polytheism than you were in soothsaying. Inform me about your dream showing the appearance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said, 'Yes, O Commander of the faithful, one night I was between being asleep and awake when a dream came to me. Someone struck me with their foot and said, "Arise, O Suwad ibn Qarib, and understand, if you are capable of understanding. Verily, the Messenger of Allah has been sent by Lu'ay ibn Ghalib, inviting people to Allah and His worship." Then he recited a poem which means, 'I am amazed by the jinn and their eavesdropping and their hard-heartedness. They quickly descended to Makkah seeking guidance. How excellent are the believing jinn, like you, compared to its disbelieving ones. So, leave for Safwa, which is a part of Hashim, and it is the name from your eyes to your head.' He said, 'I did not raise my head, but I said, 'Leave me to sleep, for I am tired.' When the second night arrived, the same thing happened. He said, 'Did I not tell you, O Suwad ibn Qarib, to arise and understand, if you are capable of understanding? Verily, the Messenger of Allah has been sent by Lu’ay ibn Ghalib, inviting people to Allah and His worship.' Then he recited a poem which means, 'I am amazed by the jinn and their news, and their hard-heartedness. They quickly descended to Makkah seeking guidance. How excellent are the believing jinn, like you, compared to its disbelieving ones. So, leave for Safwa, which is a part of Hashim, in its highlands and its barriers.' He said, 'I did not raise my head. When the third night arrived, the same thing happened. He said, 'Did I not tell you, O Suwad ibn Qarib, to arise and understand, if you are capable of understanding? Verily, the Messenger of Allah has been sent by Lu’ay ibn Ghalib, inviting people to Allah and His worship

[Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, my father used to maintain family ties, entertain guests, fulfill his promises, but he did not embrace Islam. Will he be rewarded for that?" He ﷺ replied, "No."

[Machine] "I came to the Prophet ﷺ and he presented Islam to me. So, I accepted Islam and he taught me some verses from the Qur'an. Then, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have performed some deeds during the time of ignorance. Will there be any reward for me?' He asked, 'What did you do?' I replied, 'I lost two she-camels and I followed them on a camel of mine until I found two houses in the middle of nowhere. I intended to claim them but I found an elderly man in one of them. I asked him if he had seen my two she-camels and he said, 'Yes, we found them and sold them. Allah has blessed us with them and they have benefited two families from your people, the Arabs, from the Mudar tribe.' While he was talking to me, a woman from the other house called out that she had given birth. He asked about the gender of the child, and if it was a boy, it would have been considered a part of their family. But if it was a girl, he requested me to bury her. The woman gave birth to a girl, so I asked, 'What is this newborn?' He replied, 'She is my daughter.' I said, 'I will buy her from you.' He then said, 'O brother from the Banu Tamim tribe, would you buy my daughter, while I am a man from the Arabs, from the Mudar tribe?' I responded, 'I will not buy her as a slave, but I will buy her to set her free. I will not allow her to be killed.' He asked, 'What will you give in exchange?' I said, 'I will give you my two she-camels and their offspring, and you will also receive my camel as an addition to the deal.' He agreed and said, 'In that case, send someone with me as a witness.' When I reached my people, I would return your camel to you.' However, during the night, I thought to myself that this was a great opportunity and no Arab had seized it before me. Islam has emerged and I have benefited from it by acquiring 366 camels in return. Each of them was bought with two she-camels and a camel. Will I receive any reward for that?' The Prophet ﷺ replied, 'You will be rewarded for it, as Allah has bestowed His blessings upon you through Islam.'" [This narration was considered as reliable by Imam Al-Dhahabi].

[Machine] "O my sons, when I die, you should mourn and follow your fathers' footsteps, but do not mourn for your younger ones as it will cause harm to you. And do not wail for me, as I heard the Messenger of Allah forbidding wailing. You should focus on rectifying your wealth, as it is a means of honor for the noble and a means of sufficiency for the insolent. Do not give the rights of the camels to others and do not deny them their rights, and beware of any evil deeds because no matter how much happiness you experience, the greatest evil can overcome you. Beware of the children of your enemies, as they are your enemies on the same path as their fathers. When I die, bury me in a place where Bakr ibn Wael cannot see, as there were conflicts between us in the pre-Islamic era, and I fear that they will dig up my grave and cause corruption for themselves and harm your Hereafter. Then, he called his son Al-Abbas and said, 'Take out an arrow from my quiver.' He took it out and his father said, 'Break it,' so he broke it. Then he said, 'Take out two more arrows,' so he took them out and his father said, 'Break them,' so he broke them. But he could not break them. His father said, 'O my sons, this is how you are when you are united, and this is how you are when you are divided.' Then he recited:
"Indeed, the true glory is that which is built by a father who is steadfast and upright. Glory and bravery are sufficient for him when he has purity and abundance. O my sons, when you enter into treaties, be as strong as thirty in the hands of an archer; even if the arrows are severed, their unity remains. And the elders are more deserving if they are capable of leadership. And if some of you possess dominance, you should protect the younger ones until they reach the age of maturity, and their efforts should be combined."
- This is an excerpt from a longer speech by a father advising his sons before his death.

[Machine] I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. When he saw me, I heard him say, "This is the master of the virtuous people." When I reached him, I started talking to him and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what kind of wealth is there that does not burden me with obligations from guests and a large family?" He said, "The best wealth is forty or more and woe to those who have a hundred, except those who give from their wealth for their messengers, struggle for it, support its poor, and feed the content and the hungry." I said, "O Prophet of Allah, what noble and excellent manners! O Prophet of Allah, may it not come upon the valley where I have a lot of camels." He asked, "What do you propose to do?" I said, "We will count the camels and count the people, and whoever wants can take one of the camels and go." He asked, "What will you do with those who have poor or weak camels?" I said, "I do not consider the young or the old male camels as poor or weak." He said, "Then what do you prefer, your own wealth or the wealth of your followers?" I said, "My own wealth is dearer to me than the wealth of my followers." He said, "If you have used your own wealth, spent it, or worn it, then you have done well. Otherwise, it is for your followers." I said, "By Allah, if I had stayed, I would have spent it all." Al-Hasan said, "And he did it, by Allah." When Qais was close to death, he advised his children, saying, "Beware of asking, as it is the last thing a person earns. If someone does not ask, he will leave his earnings."

Al-Zibraqan then said, "O Messenger of Allah, I can assure you that he knows more about me than what he has described. However, he envies me." Amr continued, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he is a deceiving man, stingy in his generosity, wicked in character, and foolish in his actions. By Allah, you did not lie at first, and you have spoken the truth in the end. But I was pleased, so I expressed the best I knew, and I got angry, so I expressed the worst I knew." He was born while his father was called Ahnaf.' So his mother said, 'By Allah, if it weren't for him having Ahnaf in his foot, there wouldn't be a boy as intelligent as him in the whole tribe of the Arabs.'"

I said to you, 'Indeed, you invite to good and command good.' So I conveyed that to the Prophet ﷺ and he said, 'O Allah, forgive al-Ahnaf ibn Qais.' [Machine] Al-Aswad ibn Sari' said, "O Messenger of Allah, shall I not recite to you some praises that I have praised my Lord with, Blessed and Exalted?" He said, "Indeed, your Lord, Blessed and Exalted, loves praise and He does not accept any additional praising beyond that." (Correct chain of narrators, but it has not been recorded by either of the two compilers of the Sahih collections).

[Machine] I approached the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Prophet of Allah, I have composed a poem in which I praised and glorified Allah the Almighty and praised you." He replied, "As for what you praised Allah with, give it to me, and as for what you praised me with, leave it." So I recited the part praising Allah, then a tall man entered and said to me, "Stop." When he left, he said, "Continue." I began reciting again, and before long, he returned and said, "Stop." When he left again, he said, "Continue." So I asked the Prophet of Allah, "Who is this man, O Prophet of Allah, that when he enters, you say 'stop' and when he leaves, you say 'continue'?" The Prophet replied, "This is Umar ibn Al-Khattab, and he does not interfere without reason."

[Machine] "When people came for Hajj in the year nine, Uruwah ibn Mas'ood al-Thaqafi, the uncle of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sought permission to return to his people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I fear that they will kill you.' Uruwah said: 'If they find me sleeping, they can wake me up.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him permission, and he returned to his people as a Muslim. He stayed there until after dinner, then the people of Thaqif came to him, so he invited them to Islam. They accused him falsely, disobeyed him, and said things about him that he did not deserve. Then they left him until it was late at night, when dawn was about to break. Uruwah stood up in his house, called for prayer, and started to recite the Shahada. A man from Thaqif shot an arrow at him and killed him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Uruwah is like the companion of Yasin (i.e., Prophet Nuh), who called his people to Allah the Almighty and they killed him.'"

He replied, 'Pledge allegiance to him for Islam, faith, and jihad.'" (The narration by Al-Dhahabi does not provide a summary of this conversation)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer facing a camel which had been taken in booty, and when he had given the salutation, he took a hair from the camel's side and said: I have no right as much as this of your booty, but only to the fifth. and the fifth is returned to you. He replied, 'To worship Allah alone, break the idols, and maintain family ties.' I said, 'Indeed, Allah has sent you. So who follows you in this?' He replied, 'A free man and a slave,' meaning Abu Bakr and Bilal. Then 'Amr ibn Abasa said, 'I saw myself as one-fourth of Islam, so I embraced Islam.' I then asked the Prophet, 'Can I follow you, O Messenger of Allah?' He replied, 'No, but go back to your people. When I make my appearance, come to me.'"

Then he said something that I couldn't understand, and my father was closer to him than me, so I asked him, "What did he say?" He replied, "All of them will be from Quraysh." Jabir ibn Samurah also narrated another hadith from his father.

[Machine] I was with my uncle in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ and he said, "The affair of my Ummah (nation) will continue to be righteous as long as there are twelve caliphs." Then he said a word and lowered his voice with it. So, I asked my uncle, who was in front of me, what did he say, O uncle? He said, "He said, O my son, 'All of them will be from Quraysh.'"

[Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said to him, "Extend your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you on Islam." So I pledged allegiance to him. Then I recited:
I have abandoned carousing, the playing of the qayn (a musical instrument), and wine-drinking as a religious observance
I also abandoned incantations and divination, and scribing in ambergris
And I bear the burden of fighting for the sake of Muslims
O Lord, may my loyalty not be disappointed for I have pledged the allegiance of my family and wealth out of devotion
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Your allegiance has not been in vain, O Dhirar."
