27. Book of the Companions (24/53)
[Machine] As for the two sheikhs, they did not mention anything beyond the virtues. We have started in the first mention of the companion by discussing his lineage and death, then we mentioned what is valid about their conditions from their virtues that they did not mention. So I did not forget to mention Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi and his peers in knowledge.
[Machine] By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never participated in a battle or expedition without me being present.
[Machine] On the day of Badr, Zubayr ibn al-Awam had a yellow turban wrapped around his head, which he wore proudly. The angels came down upon them wearing yellow turbans as well.
[Machine] The inheritance of Zubair ibn Al-Awwam was divided into forty thousand million dirhams.
[Machine] "The inheritance of Zubair was divided into forty million dirhams."
[Machine] Tell me about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until I can speak about you, for every companion's son speaks about his father. He said: "O my son, there is no one who accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with companionship except that I have also accompanied him with the same or better companionship. And you should know that your mother, Asma' bint Abi Bakr, used to serve me. And your aunt, Aishah bint Abi Bakr, is also your aunt. And you should know that my mother is Safiyyah bint 'Abd al-Muttalib, and my uncles are Hamzah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, Abu Talib, and 'Abbas. And that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is the son of my aunt. And you should know that my paternal aunt, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, used to serve her. And her daughter, Fatimah, is the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . And you should know that Khadijah is the mother of her mother, Habeedah bint Asad ibn 'Abd al-'Uzza. And you should know that the mother of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is Aminah bint Wahb ibn 'Abd Manaf ibn Zuhrah. And I have accompanied him with the best companionship, and praise be to Allah. And I heard him say, 'Whoever attributes to me what I did not say should take his place in hellfire.' " The Dhahabi remained silent about this summary.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, every prophet has a disciple, and my disciple is Al-Zubair." It was said to him, "O Abu Abdullah, do you know if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said this to someone other than you?" He replied, "No, by Allah, I do not know. It is authentic according to the criteria of the two Sheikhs (referring to Bukhari and Muslim) and they did not mention it in this context."
[Machine] Zubayr ibn al-Awwam passed by a gathering of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and Hassaan recited poetry to them while they were not paying much attention. Zubayr sat with them and said, "Why do I see you not giving more attention to the poetry of Ibn al-Furai'ah? The Prophet ﷺ used to appreciate it, listen to it carefully, and generously reward him for it. He would not be distracted from it by anything." Hassaan replied, "He stood by the Prophet's covenant and his guidance. His words matched his actions. He was a loyal advocate for the truth, the most famous knight and warrior who would lead battles. Even if he was from a noble lineage and his mother was Safiyyah, he would not be protected from the Messenger of Allah's nearness. He was also a supporter of Islam, a source of honor and glory. How many hardships did Zubayr endure and how many battles did he fight for the sake of the chosen one? Allah rewards abundantly when hardships are revealed. He hastens towards death with noble and courageous readiness. There is no match for him among them, nor was there before him. As long as you continue to praise him, it is better than any worldly gain. Your actions, O son of Hashim, are superior."

Appoint a successor. He said: Are they suggesting that? He said: Yes. He said: Who are they suggesting? The man kept quiet. Then another man entered upon him and said something similar to what the first man said, and he gave the same response. Then ʿUthman ؓ said: Are they suggesting az-Zubair? He said: Yes. He said. By the One in whose hand is my soul, indeed he is the best among them as far as I know, and the most beloved of them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . ‘Abdullah told us: Suwaid told us: ʿ Ali bin Mus-hir told us similar report, with his isnad. A man disputed with az-Zubayr about streamlets in the lava plain which was irrigated by them. The Ansari said: Release the water and let it run, but az-Zubayr refused. The Holy Prophet ﷺ said to az-Zubayr: Water (your ground), Zubayr, then let the water run to your neighbour. The Ansari then became angry and said: Messenger of Allah! it is because he is your cousin! Thereupon the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed colour and he said: Water (your ground), then keep back the water till it returns to the embankment. Az-Zubayr said: By Allah! I think this verse came down about that: "But no , by thy Lord! they can have no (real) faith, until they make thee judge....." (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3637)

27.129 [Machine] The killing of Zubayr ibn Al-Awwam.
[Machine] When it was the day of the Battle of Camel, Zubayr called his son Abdullah, and advised him, saying, "O my son, indeed, this is a day in which either an oppressor or an oppressed person will be killed. By Allah, if I kill someone, it will be an oppressed person. By Allah, I have never done anything like this before. O my son, consider my religion, for I never prioritize anything over it. It is worth more than a thousand thousand and two hundred thousand." Adh-Dhahabi did not mention it in his summary.
[Machine] "Zubayr retreated on the Day of the Battle of the Camel in defeat, and then Ibn Jurmooz, a man from the tribe of Banu Tamim, caught up with him and killed him."
[Machine] When Zubayr left on the day of the Battle of the Camel, he said, "I know if my knowledge were of any benefit, life would be close to death." Then it did not occur to him that he would be killed by Ibn Jurumuz.
[Machine] I heard Al-Fadl ibn Dakin saying, "Talha and Zubair ibn Al-Awam were killed in the month of Rajab in the year sixty-three."
[Machine] From his elders, they said that Al-Zubayr went out on the day of Al-Jamal, which was on Thursday, of the tenth of Jumada Al-Akhirah of this year, after the incident (the Battle of Basra), riding a horse called Dhul-Khimar, heading towards Al-Madinah. He was killed in the valley of As-Siba' and buried there. It is mentioned by Urwah bin Al-Zubayr who said, "My father was killed on the day of Al-Jamal, and he was over sixty-four years old."
[Machine] "Zubair approached his attacker while having overcome him and said, 'I remind you of Allah.' Zubair then refrained from harming him, repeatedly reminding him of Allah. However, when the attacker betrayed Zubair and struck him, Zubair said, 'May Allah fight against you. You remind me of Allah and then forget about Him.' Al-Dhahabi remained silent about this incident in his summary."
[Machine] "Ali, do you remember the day when you and I were in the gathering of a group of Ansar in the courtyard? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked you, 'Do you love him?' You replied, 'What prevents me from loving him?' He said, 'Verily, you will fight against him and be unjust to him.' The narration from Al-Zubayr ends here and it has multiple meanings."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "You fight against him while you are the oppressor." Then, he said, "I don't remember." Then, Al-Zubair departed.
[Machine] I witnessed Ali and Zubair when Zubair returned riding his mount and splitting the ranks. His son Abdullah approached him and said, "What's wrong with you?" He replied, "Ali reminded me of something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that you will fight him while being unjust to him. So I will not fight him." Abdullah asked, "But did you come here to fight? You only came to reconcile the people, and Allah will reconcile this matter through you." Zubair said, "I swore not to fight." Abdullah said, "Then free your servant Girgis and wait until you reconcile the people." Zubair freed his servant Girgis and remained standing. The people disagreed, so he left on his horse. It has been narrated that Zubair acknowledged this to Ali, without these details and narrations.
[Machine] I heard Ali and Zubayr, and Ali said to him, "I am going to recite to you by Allah, O Zubayr, have you not heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'You fight against me while you are unjust to me?" He replied, "Yes, but I forgot."

[Machine] Talhah ibn Ubayd Allah ibn Uthman ibn Amr ibn Ka'b ibn Sa'd ibn Taym ibn Murrah was in Sham and spoke to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about his arrow. The Messenger ﷺ struck it with his own arrow, and Talhah asked, "And my reward, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "And your reward is like that of the Day of Badr."

[Machine] Talha bin Ubaidullah bin Uthman bin Amr bin Ka'b bin Saad bin Tamim bin Murrah came from Sham (Syria) after the Prophet peace be upon him returned from the Battle of Badr. He spoke to the Prophet peace be upon him about his arrow, and the Prophet peace be upon him said to him, "You have your arrow." He said, "And what about your reward, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet peace be upon him said, "And you have your reward."

[Machine] The translation is as follows:
"This is the month when the son of Abdullah ibn Abdul Muttalib, Muhammad, the last of the prophets, would leave the sanctuary, migrate to a cluster of palm trees, a valley, and swim. Beware of going ahead of him," Talha said. When he said this, it hit my heart, so I hurriedly left until I reached Makkah. I asked, "Has anything happened?" They said, "Yes, Muhammad ibn Abdullah, the trustworthy, has prophesied, and Ibn Abi Quhafa has followed him." I left until I entered upon Abu Bakr and asked, "Have you followed this man?" He replied, "Yes, so set out to meet him and join him, for he calls to the truth." Talha informed him of what the hermit had said. Abu Bakr came with Talha and entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and then Talha accepted Islam and informed the Prophet of what the hermit had said. The Prophet explained it to him. When Abu Bakr and Talha embraced Islam, Nawfal ibn Khuwaylid ibn Al-Adawiyyah took hold of them with one rope, and the sons of Taim did not prevent him. Nawfal ibn Khuwaylid was called Ashadd Quraish (the harshest of the Quraish) because of this incident, and that is why Abu Bakr and Talha were known as Al-Qariniyin (the two Caravan Leaders). Talha did not participate in the Battle of Badr because he was with the Prophet and Sa'id ibn Zaid, spying on the movements of the caravan. When they returned, the Prophet had already finished fighting the polytheists. They met him in a shaded area, Munthah, near the valley of Badr, while he was returning from the battle. However, he witnessed Uhud and other events with the Prophet. He was one of those who stood firm with the Prophet on the Day of Uhud, when the people left him and pledged allegiance to him even until death. Malik ibn Zuhayr threw a spear at the Prophet that day, and Talha protected him with his hand. His little finger was injured, so he said, "Ouch, ouch," when he was struck by the spear. Talha mentioned that the Prophet had said, "If he had said 'Bismillah', he would have entered Paradise while people were watching." On that day, Talha was struck on the head with a severe blow by a polytheist. The blow was delivered twice while Talha was facing him, and one blow while he turned his back. Dhirar ibn Al-Khattab Al-Fihri used to say, 'By Allah, I struck him that day.'"

[Machine] On the day of Al-Jamal, Ali called out to the people, saying, "Do not throw arrows at anyone, do not stab with spears, do not strike with swords, and do not seek out people, for the one who succeeds in this will indeed succeed on the Day of Resurrection." We agreed with him. Then the people said, "O Tharatis (referring to Ali), the son of Hanafiyyah is our leader in Rabwah, and he has the banner with him." Ali called out to him, saying, "O Commander of the Faithful!" He approached us, showing his face, and said, "O Amir al-Mu'minin, they call me Tharatis (referring to Ali). So Ali extended his hands and said, "O Allah, expose the killers of Uthman today with their faces." Then Zubayr said to the Asharis (his followers) who were with him, "Attack them with stones!" It seemed as if he wanted the fighting to break out. But when his companions saw this, they did not wait and they charged forward. Allah defeated them and Marwan bin Hakam shot an arrow at Talhah bin Ubaidullah, which grazed his leg and struck his horse. The horse held onto the arrow until it caught up to him, and then it slaughtered him. Then Marwan turned to Aban bin Uthman, who was with him, and said, "I have avenged one of your father's killers." Al-Dhahabi did not mention this incident in his summary.

[Machine] Talhah was one of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . He had four sons, who were present with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ : Zakariyya, Yusuf, Aisha, and Zaynab. Aisha was the daughter of Abu Bakr, and her sister, Umm Kulthum, was married to Talhah. Talhah's wife, Hamnah bint Jahsh, gave birth to his son Muhammad, who was killed on the Day of Camel along with his father.
There were other women who were closely related to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and were also under the guardianship of Talhah. These women were: Habiba bint Abu Sufyan, her sister Rufayrah bint Abu Sufyan, and Umm Salamah bint Abu Umamah. Talhah's sister, Quraibah bint Abu Umamah, also lived under his guardianship. Talhah's wife, Mariam bint Talhah, was also present but the narration does not provide any further details on her. This information was not included in the summary by Adh-Dhahabi.

[Machine] On the day of the camels, when he saw the dead bodies and the severed heads, he exclaimed, "O Hasan, what good can be expected after this?" He replied, "I forbade you from engaging in this before we entered it." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.

[Machine] The poet [Al-Bahr al-Tawil] was a young man who used to bring him wealth from his friend whenever he became impoverished, and poverty would distance itself from him as if riches were attached to his forehead and his cheeks were adorned with poetry, and at the end, there was the full moon.
[Machine] It was as if the moon was asking, "Who are you?" So I said, "I am from the companions of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali." Then he said, "Extend your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you." So I extended my hand and he pledged allegiance to me. His soul overflowed with joy, so I went to Ali and informed him of Talhah's statement. Ali said, "Allah is greater! Allah is greater! The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, spoke the truth. Allah refuses that Talhah enters paradise except with my pledge of allegiance on his neck." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about this in his summary.
"On the Day of Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ wore two coats of mail. He tried to get up on a boulder but was not able to, so Talhah squatted under him, lifting the Prophet ﷺ upon it such that he could sit on the boulder. So he said: (Paradise) "It is obligated from Talhah.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1692)
