#rajab Month of Rajab (1)

quran:9:36

Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve ˹lunar˺ months in the register of Allah ˹from˺ the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous ˹who fear Him˺.

Verily the number of months, used to reckon the year, with God is twelve months in the Book of God, the Preserved Tablet (al-lawh al-mahfūz), from the day that He created the heavens and the earth; four of them, that is, the months, are sacred, inviolable: Dhū’l-Qa‘da, Dhū’l-Hijja, Muharram and Rajab. That, making of them sacred, is the right, the upright, religion. So do not wrong yourselves during them, during these sacred months, with acts of disobedience, for their burden ˹of sin˺ is greater therein; but it is also said to mean ˹do not wrong yourselves˺ at any time during all the months ˹of the year˺. And fight the idolaters altogether, all of them, throughout the months, even as they fight you altogether; and know that God is with those who fear Him, supporting and assisting ˹them˺.

Ibn ʿUmar replied, "Four, one of which was in Rajab." Then we heard ʿAisha brushing her teeth whereupon ʿUrwa said, "O mother of the believers! Don't you hear what Abu ʿAbdur-Rahman is saying? Urwa bin Az-Zubair and I entered the Mosque (of the Prophet) and saw ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar sitting near the dwelling place of Aisha and some people were offering the Duha prayer. We asked him about their prayer and he replied that it was a heresy.

He (Urwa) then asked him how many times the Prophet ﷺ had performed ʿUmra. He replied, 'Four times; one of them was in the month of Rajab." We disliked to contradict him. Then we heard ʿAisha, the Mother of faithful believers cleaning her teeth with Siwak in the dwelling place. 'Urwa said, "O Mother! O Mother of the believers! Don't you hear what Abu ʿAbdur Rahman is saying?" She said, "What does he say?" 'Urwa said, "He says that Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed four ʿUmra and one of them was in the month of Rajab." ʿAisha said, "May Allah be merciful to Abu ʿAbdur Rahman! I and 'Urwah b. Zubair entered the mosque and found 'Abdullah b. 'Umar sitting near the apartment of A'ishah and the people were observing the forenoon prayer (when the sun had sufficiently risen). We asked him about their prayer, and he said: It is bid'a (innovation), Urwah said to him: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, how many 'umrahs did Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform? He said: Four 'umrahs, one he performed during the month of Rajab. We were reluctant either to believe him or reject him. We heard the noise of brushing of her teeth by 'A'ishah in her apartment. 'Urwah said: Mother of the Faithful, are you not hearing what Abi 'Abd al-Rahman is saying? She said: What is he saying? Thereupon he ('Urwah) said: He (Ibn 'Umar) states that Allah's Apostle ﷺ performed four 'umrahs and one of them during the month of Rajab. Thereupon she remarked: May Allah have mercy upon Abu 'Abd al-Rahman. Never did Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform 'Umrah in which he did not accompany him, and he (Allah's Apostle) never performed 'Umrah during the month of Rajab.

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Neither Fara' nor 'Atira (is permissible):" Al-Fara' nor 'Atira (is permissible):" Al- Fara' was the first offspring (of camels or sheep) which the pagans used to offer (as a sacrifice) to their idols. And Al-ʿAtira was (a sheep which was to be slaughtered) during the month of Rajab.

That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no Fara' or 'Atirah." The Fara' is the first of the offspring that would be born to them, so they would slaughter it. The 'Atirah was an animal that they would slaughter during Rajab to honor the month of Rajab, since it was the first of the sacred months.

[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet Muhammad, he said, "There is neither 'Fara' nor 'Atirah'. And 'Fara' is the first produce that was brought forth for them, which they used to sacrifice for their idols, and 'Atirah' was practiced in the month of Rajab."

[Machine] Al-Bukhārī narrated it in *al-Ṣaḥīḥ* from ʿAbdān, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak. 19348. The jurist Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Armawī—may Allah have mercy on him—informed us: Shāfiʿ ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAwānah informed us: Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṭaḥāwī informed us: al-Muzanī related to us: al-Shāfiʿī related to us. I heard him say: “It was something the people of the pre-Islamic era used to seek blessing through in their wealth. One of them would slaughter the firstborn of his she-camel or his sheep, and would not raise it, hoping for blessing in what would come afterward. So they asked the Prophet ﷺ about it, and he said: ‘Perform *fara* if you wish’—meaning, slaughter if you wish. They used to ask him about what they had been doing in the pre-Islamic era, fearing that it might be disliked in Islam, so he informed them that there was nothing disliked upon them in that, and he instructed them—by way of preference—to raise it and then use it (as a mount/provision) in the path of Allah.” Al-Shāfiʿī—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “Someone who heard Zayd ibn Aslam told me, from a man of Banū Ḍamrah, from his father, that the Prophet ﷺ was asked about *al-farʿa*, and he said: ‘The *farʿa* is true, and to raise it until it becomes a sturdy young camel (an *ibn labūn*), then give it to a widow or use it in the path of Allah, is better than tipping over your vessel, making your she-camel bereft, and eating it while its meat clings to its hair.’” Al-Shāfiʿī—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “His saying, ‘The *farʿa* is true,’ means that it is not invalid; rather, it is an Arabic expression given as an answer to the questioner. And it has also been narrated from him— ﷺ —‘There is no *farʿah* and no *ʿatīrah*.’ This is not a contradiction in narration; rather, it means: there is no obligatory *farʿah* and no obligatory *ʿatīrah*. And the other hadith indicates this meaning: that he permitted him to slaughter, but preferred for him that he give it to a widow or use it in the path of Allah. “And *al-ʿAtīrah* is the *rajabiyyah*: a sacrificial animal the people of the pre-Islamic era used to seek blessing through in Rajab. So the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘No *ʿAtīrah*,’ meaning: no binding/required *ʿAtīrah*. And his saying— ﷺ —when he was asked about *ʿAtīrah* carries the meaning: slaughter for Allah in whatever month it may be; that is, slaughter if you wish, and make the slaughter for Allah, not for other than Him, in whatever month it may be—not that it is in Rajab to the exclusion of the other months.” 19349. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī informed us: Abū al-Ḥasan al-Kārizī informed us: ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz related to us. He said: Abū ʿUbayd said: “*Al-fara* is the first offspring that a she-camel produces. They used to slaughter it when it was born, and he disapproved of that and said: ‘Leave it until it becomes an *ibn makhāḍ* or an *ibn labūn*, so that it will develop some taste.’ And *al-zukhrubb* is that whose body has become thick and whose flesh has become firm. And his saying, ‘better than tipping over your vessel,’ means: if you slaughter it when its mother gives birth to it, the mother remains without a young one to suckle, and therefore her milk is cut off; so if you do that, it is as though you have overturned your vessel and spilled it. And his saying, ‘make your she-camel bereft,’ refers to slaughtering her young; and every female that loses her young is *wālih* (bereft/grieving).

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Time has come back to its original state which it had when Allah created the Heavens and the Earth, the year is twelve months, of which four are sacred; (and out of these four) three are in succession, namely, Dhul-Qa'da, Dhul-Hijja and Muharram, and (the fourth one) Rajab Mudar which is between Jumad (Ath-Tham) and Sha'ban." The Prophet ﷺ then asked us, "Which month is this?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know (it) better." He kept quiet so long that we thought he might call it by another name. Then he said, "Isn't it Dhul-Hijja?" We said, "Yes." He asked "What town is this?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know (it) better.' Then he kept quiet so long that we thought he might call it by another name. He then said, "Isn't it the (forbidden) town (Mecca)?" We said, "Yes." He asked, "What is the day today?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know (it) better. Then he kept quiet so long that we thought that he might call it by another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the Day of An-Nahr (slaughtering of sacrifices)?" We said, "Yes." Then he said, "Your blood (lives), your properties," (the sub narrator Muhammad, said: I think he also said): "..and your honor) are as sacred to one another like the sanctity of this Day of yours, in this town of yours, in this month of yours. You shall meet your Lord and He will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Don't go astray after me by striking the necks of one another. Lo! It is incumbent upon those who are present to inform it to those who are absent for perhaps the informed one might comprehend it (understand it) better than some of the present audience." Whenever the sub-narrator Muhammad mentioned that statement, he would say, "The Prophet ﷺ said the truth.") And then the Prophet ﷺ added, "No doubt! Haven't I conveyed Allah's Message to you! No doubt! Haven't I conveyed Allah's Message to you?"

We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the day of An- Nahr (i.e. sacrifice)?" We replied, "Yes." He said, "So your blood, your properties, (The sub-narrator Muhammad said, 'I think the Prophet ﷺ also said: And your honor..) are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this city of yours, in this month of yours; and surely, you will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Do not become infidels after me, cutting the throats of one another. It is incumbent on those who are present to convey this message (of mine) to those who are absent. May be that some of those to whom it will be conveyed will understand it better than those who have actually heard it." (The sub-narrator, Muhammad, on remembering that narration, used to say, "Muhammad spoke the truth!") He (i.e. Prophet) then added twice, "No doubt! Haven't I conveyed (Allah's Message) to you?"

Time has completed a cycle and come to the state of the day when Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is constituted of twelve months, of which four are sacred; three of them consecutive, viz. Dhu'l-Qa'da, Dhu'l- Hijja and Muharram, and also Rajab the month of Mudar which comes between Jumada and Sha'ban. He (the Holy Prophet) then said: which month is this? We said Allah and His Messenger know best. He (the narrator) said: He (the Holy Prophet) remained silent for some time until we thought that he would give it a name other than that (by which it was known). He said: Is it not Dha'l-Hijja? We said: Yes. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Which city is this? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (the Holy Prophety remained silent until we thought that he would give it another name. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Is it not the Balda (the city of Mecca)? We said: Yes. He said: What day is this? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (the Holy Prophet) remained silent until we thought that he would give it another name. He said: Is it not the Day of Sacrifice? We said: Messenger of Allah. yes. Thereupon he said: Your blood, your property (Muhammad, one of the narrators, said: I think, he also said this) and your honour are sacred to you like the sacredness of this day of yours, in this city of yours, and in this month of yours. You will soon meet your Lord and He will ask you about your deeds. So do not turn after me unbelievers (or misguided), some of you striking the necks of the others. Behold I let him who is present convey to him who is absent, for many a one whom a message is conveyed has a more retentive memory than one who hears. He again said: Behold! have I not delivered (the message) to you? This hadith has been narrated through another chain of transmitters, but with a slight variation of words.

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Time has taken its original shape which it had when Allah created the Heavens and the Earth. The year is of twelve months, four of which are sacred, and out of these (four) three are in succession, i.e. Dhul-Qa'da, Dhul-Hijja and Al-Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab which is named after the Mudar tribe, between (the month of) Jumaida (ath-thania) and Sha'ban." Then the Prophet ﷺ asked, "Which is this month?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." On that the Prophet ﷺ kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We replied, "Yes." Then he said, "Which town is this?" "We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." On that he kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the town of Mecca?" We replied, "Yes, " Then he said, "Which day is today?" We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with another name. Haven't I conveyed (Allah's Message) to you?" We used to worship stones, and when we found a better stone than the first one, we would throw the first one and take the latter, but if we could not get a stone then we would collect some earth (i.e. soil) and then bring a sheep and milk that sheep over it, and perform the Tawaf around it. When the month of Rajab came, we used (to stop the military actions), calling this month the iron remover, for we used to remove and throw away the iron parts of every spear and arrow in the month of Rajab. Abu Raja' added: When the Prophet ﷺ sent with (Allah's) Message, I was a boy working as a shepherd of my family camels. When we heard the news about the appearance of the Prophet, we ran to the fire, i.e. to Musailima al-Kadhdhab.

[Machine] This man, whose name is Abdullah, the servant of Asma bint Abi Bakr, told me. Ata said to him, "Tell me." He spoke in front of Ata, saying, "Asma bint Abi Bakr sent me to Abdullah bin Umar, informing me that she had heard that you prohibit three things: fasting the entire month of Rajab, wearing a silk cloak, and having a fringe on clothing." Abdullah replied, "As for what you mentioned about fasting the entire month of Rajab, how can someone fast forever? As for the fringe on clothing, Umar told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter.' So, I fear that the fringe on clothing might be considered part of wearing silk. As for the fringe dyed saffron yellow, this is Meethara, the son of Umar. I hope you can see it." Ata said, "Yes, I mean it." Abdullah went to Asma and informed her. Abdullah then brought me a cloak made of Tayaalisah fabric with a strip of Deebaj Khissrawani. The cloak had two broken pieces belonging to Muhammad bin Musa Khissrawani and their vulvas were sewn together. Asma said, "This is the cloak of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he used to wear. When he passed away, it remained with Aisha. When she passed away, I took hold of it, and now we wash it for the sick among us when they complain, and we seek healing through it."

"I used to forbid you to store the meat of the sacrifices for more than three days so that there would be enough for everyone. But now Allah, the mighty and sublime, has bestowed plenty upon us, so eat some, give some in charity and store some, For these days are the days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah." A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, we used to sacrifice the 'Atirah during the Jahiliyyah in Rajab; what do you command us to do?" He said: "Sacrifice to Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, whatever month it is, do good for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and feed (the poor)." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, we used to sacrifice the Fara' during the Jahiliyyah; what do you command us to do?" He said: "For every flock of grazing animals, feed the firstborn as you feed the rest of your flock, until it reaches an age where it could be used to carry loads, then sacrifice it, and give its meat in charity to the wayfarer, for that is good."

A man called the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: We used to sacrifice Atirah in pre-Islamic days during Rajab; so what do you command us? He said: Sacrifice for the sake of Allah in any month whatever; obey Allah, Most High, and feed(the people). He said: We used to sacrifice a Fara' in pre-Islamic days, so what do you command us? He said: On every pasturing animal there is a Fara' which is fed by your cattle till it becomes strong and capable of carrying load. The narrator Nasr said (in his version): When it becomes capable of carrying load of the pilgrims, you may slaughter it and give its meat as charity (sadaqah). The narrator Khalid's version says: You (may give it) to the travellers, for it is better. Khalid said: I asked AbuQilabah: How many pasturing animals? He replied: One hundred.
