A man called the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: We used to sacrifice Atirah in pre-Islamic days during Rajab; so what do you command us? He said: Sacrifice for the sake of Allah in any month whatever; obey Allah, Most High, and feed(the people). He said: We used to sacrifice a Fara' in pre-Islamic days, so what do you command us? He said: On every pasturing animal there is a Fara' which is fed by your cattle till it becomes strong and capable of carrying load. The narrator Nasr said (in his version): When it becomes capable of carrying load of the pilgrims, you may slaughter it and give its meat as charity (sadaqah). The narrator Khalid's version says: You (may give it) to the travellers, for it is better. Khalid said: I asked AbuQilabah: How many pasturing animals? He replied: One hundred.

[AI] I had forbidden you from [keeping] the meat of sacrificial animals beyond three days so that it would suffice you; but Allah has brought abundance, so eat, store, and trade. Indeed, these days are days of eating, drinking, and remembrance of Allah.

A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, we used to offer an ʿatīrah sacrifice in the pre-Islamic period in Rajab—what do you command us?” He said, “Slaughter for Allah in whatever month it may be; be dutiful to Allah and feed [others].”

Another man said, “O Messenger of Allah, we used to perform a faraʿ in the pre-Islamic period—what do you command us?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “For every pasturing flock of sheep there is a faraʿ: you feed it along with your sheep until, when it becomes strong enough to carry a load, you slaughter it and give its meat in charity to the wayfarer; indeed, that is better.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded peace with the people of Najran on condition that they would pay to Muslims two thousand suits of garments, half of Safar, and the rest in Rajab, and they would lend (Muslims) thirty coats of mail, thirty horses, thirty camels, and thirty weapons of each type used in battle. Muslims will stand surely for them until they return them in case there is any plot or treachery in the Yemen. No church of theirs will be demolished and no clergyman of theirs will be turned out. There will be no interruption in their religion until they bring something new or take usury. Isma'il said: They took usury.

abudawud:2428Mūsá b. Ismāʿīl > Ḥammād > Saʿīd al-Jurayrī > Abū al-Salīl > Mujībah al-Bāhiliyyah from her father or uncle

He (al-Bāhilī) came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then went away and came back to him after a year, and his condition and appearance had changed. He said, “O Messenger of Allah, do you not recognize me?” He said, “Who are you?” He said, “I am the al-Bāhilī who came to you last year.” He said, “What has changed you, when you used to be of good appearance?” He said, “I have not eaten any food except at night since I left you.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Why have you tortured yourself?”

Then he said, “Fast the month of patience (i.e. Ramaḍān), and one day from every month.” He said, “Increase it for me, for I have strength.” He said, “Fast two days.” He said, “Increase it for me.” He said, “Fast three days.” He said, “Increase it for me.” He said, “Fast during the sacred months and leave off; fast during the sacred months and leave off; fast during the sacred months and leave off.” And he gestured with his three fingers, drawing them together and then releasing them.

[AI] I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once for a need. He said, “Who are you?” I said, “Do you not recognize me?” He said, “And who are you?” I said, “I am the Bahili who came to you last year.” He said, “You came to me with a fine body, complexion, and appearance—so what has brought you to what I see?” I said, “By Allah, since I left you I have not broken my fast except at night.” He said, “Who commanded you to torture yourself?”—three times. “Fast the month of patience: Ramadan.” I said, “I find strength, and I would like you to increase me.” He said, “Then fast one day of the month.” I said, “I find strength, and I would like you to increase me.” He said, “Then two days of the month.” I said, “I find strength, and I would like you to increase me.” He said, “What more do you seek beyond the month of patience and two days in the month?” I said, “I find strength, and I would like you to increase me.” He said, “Then three days of the month.” And he pressed him at the third time, and he could hardly speak. I said, “I find strength, and I would like you to increase me.” He said, “Then fast in the sacred months, and break your fast.”

The father or Uncle of Mujibah al-Bahiliyyah visited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He then went away and came to him (again) after one year when his condition and appearance had changed. He said: Messenger of Allah, do you not recognize me? He asked: Who are you? He replied: I am al-Bahili who came to you last year. He said: What has changed you? You were looking well, then you were good in appearance? He said: I have only food at night since I departed from you. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Why did you torment yourself? Fast during Ramadan (the month of patience) and fast for one day every month. He said: Increase it for me, for I have (more) strength. He said: Fast two days. He again said: Increase it for me. He said: Fast three days. He again said: Increase it for me. He said: Fast during the inviolable months and then stop; fast during the inviolable months and then stop; fast during the inviolable months and then stop. He indicated by his three fingers, and joined them and then opened them. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2428)

That the Prophet said: "Umrah has been entered into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection."

[AI] Abu ‘Isa said: The hadith of Ibn ‘Abbas is a sound (hasan) hadith. The meaning of this hadith is that there is no harm in performing ‘umrah during the months of Hajj. This is also what al-Shafi‘i, Ahmad, and Ishaq said. The meaning of this hadith is that the people of the pre-Islamic period used not to perform ‘umrah during the months of Hajj. When Islam came, the Prophet ﷺ granted permission for that and said: “‘Umrah has entered into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection,” meaning that there is no harm in performing ‘umrah during the months of Hajj. The months of Hajj are Shawwal, Dhu al-Qa‘dah, and ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. A man should not enter into the state of ihram for Hajj except during the months of Hajj. The sacred months are Rajab, Dhu al-Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and al-Muharram. This is what more than one of the people of knowledge from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and others have said.

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to present himself to the people in a way that he would say, "Is there anyone who can take me to his people? The Quraysh have prevented me from delivering the message of my Lord." A man from Hamdan then came and asked, "Who are you?" The man replied, "I am from Hamdan." The man then asked, "Do your people prevent you?" He replied, "Yes." Then, the man feared that his people would harm him, so he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "I will go to them, inform them, and then come to you in a year's time." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes." So he went, and the delegation of the Ansar came in the month of Rajab.

They said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are asking you about a person who has a child born to him." He said, "Whoever among you wants to sacrifice for his child, let him do two sheep as a reward for a boy and one sheep for a girl." He was asked about 'Fara'. He said, "And giving up Fara is a right, and leaving it until it becomes one or two years old, born of mature parents, or a father of a well-reputed, then carrying it for the sake of Allah, or giving it to a widow, is better than slaughtering it. Its flesh adheres to its bones, and it fills your container, and you give it to your neighbors." He was asked about 'Atira'. He said, "Atira is a right."
