#rajab Month of Rajab (3)

Dua when the month of Rajab enters

suyuti:85-540bAnas

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as ˹the month of˺ Rajab entered, used to say, "O Allah, bless us in ˹the months of˺ Rajab and Shaʿbān, and let us reach ˹the month of˺ Ramaḍān."

Ibn Najjār

[Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ and recited to him [the poem of Hitya ibn al-Rijaz]:

O Malik of the people and judge of the Arabs,

I met a dejection of dejections in the morning,

I sought food from it in Rajab,

But it left me in dispute and fled,

It broke the covenant and clung to sin,

And they are an evil conqueror for the one it conquers,

So the Prophet ﷺ said at that time,

And they are an evil conqueror for the one it conquers.

suyuti:73-1b

[Machine] “I came to the Prophet of God ﷺ and recited to him:

‘O Master of mankind and Judge of the Arabs … indeed I have encountered a harsh one among the harsh.

I set out seeking from her food in Rajab … but she met me with pulling-away and with eyelashes.

She broke the pledge and tucked her tail … and they are the worst of victors over those they defeat.’

Then the Prophet ﷺ began repeating it and saying: ‘And they are the worst of victors over those they defeat.’”

[Machine] I entered the mosque with ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, and there was Ibn ʿUmar leaning against ʿĀ’ishah’s room, while some people were performing the forenoon (ḍuḥā) prayer. ʿUrwah said to him, “Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, what is this prayer?” He replied, “An innovation.” Then ʿUrwah said to him, “Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, how many ʿumrahs did the Prophet ﷺ perform?” He said, “Four—one of them in Rajab.” He said: We heard ʿĀ’ishah clearing her throat in the room, so ʿUrwah said to her, “Indeed Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān claims that the Prophet ﷺ performed four ʿumrahs, one of them in Rajab?” She said, “May Allah have mercy on Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. The Prophet ﷺ never performed ʿumrah except that he was with him, and he never performed ʿumrah in Rajab.”

[Machine] I and ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr entered the mosque and found ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar there, so we sat with him. He said: We then saw some men praying al-Ḍuḥā, so we said, “O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, what is this prayer?” He replied, “An innovation.” Then we said to him, “How many ʿumrahs did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform?” He said, “Four, one of them in Rajab.” He said: We were too shy to respond to him. He said: Then we heard the sound of the teeth of the Mother of the Believers ʿĀʾishah, and ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr said to her, “O Mother of the Believers, do you not hear what Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is saying? He says the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed four ʿumrahs, one of them in Rajab.” She said, “May Allah have mercy on Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. He did not perform any ʿumrah except that he (Ibn ʿUmar) was present for it, and he did not perform any ʿumrah in Rajab.”

Urwa bin Az-Zubair and I entered the Mosque (of the Prophet) and saw ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar sitting near the dwelling place of Aisha and some people were offering the Duha prayer. We asked him about their prayer and he replied that it was a heresy. He (Urwa) then asked him how many times the Prophet ﷺ had performed ʿUmra. He replied, 'Four times; one of them was in the month of Rajab." We disliked to contradict him. Then we heard ʿAisha, the Mother of faithful believers cleaning her teeth with Siwak in the dwelling place. 'Urwa said, "O Mother! O Mother of the believers! Don't you hear what Abu ʿAbdur Rahman is saying?" She said, "What does he say?" 'Urwa said, "He says that Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed four ʿUmra and one of them was in the month of Rajab." ʿAisha said, "May Allah be merciful to Abu ʿAbdur Rahman! The Prophet ﷺ did not perform any ʿUmra except that he was with him, and he never performed any ʿUmra in Rajab." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1775)

[Machine] Urwah ibn al-Zubayr asked Ibn Umar, "In which month did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform Umrah?" He replied, "In the month of Rajab." Aisha overheard and Ibn Zubayr asked her and informed her of what Ibn Umar said. She said, "May Allah have mercy on Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never performed Umrah except in the month of Dhul-Hijjah."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast on certain days until it was said that he never breaks his fast, and he would break his fast on certain days until it was said that he hardly ever fasts, except for two days of the week, unless there was a fasting in the month, then he would fast those two days as well. He did not fast any month as much as he fasted in Sha'ban. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, you fast so much that it seems like you never break your fast, and you break your fast so much that it seems like you hardly ever fast. He said, "Which two days?" I said, "Monday and Thursday." He said, "Those are two days when deeds are shown (to Allah) and I love that my deeds should be shown (to Allah) when I am fasting." I said, "And I have never seen you fasting in any month as you fast in Sha'ban." He said, "That is a month between Rajab and Ramadan that people neglect, but it is a month in which deeds are raised up to the Lord of the worlds, and I love that my deeds should be raised up when I am fasting."

[Machine] I used to serve the Prophet ﷺ, then the Prophet ﷺ said to me, "O Rabi'ah! Why don't you get married?" I replied, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I don't want to get married. I don't have enough to provide for a wife, and I don't want anything to distract me from you." Then he turned away from me. After that, he asked me again, "O Rabi'ah! Why don't you get married?" I replied, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I don't want to get married. I don't have enough to provide for a wife, and I don't want anything to distract me from you." He turned away from me again. Then I revisited myself and said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, you know what is best for me in this life and the hereafter." He said, "And I say to myself, if he asks me for the third time, I will say yes." Then he asked me for the third time, "O Rabi'ah! Why don't you get married?" I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, do whatever you think is best for me or whatever you like." He said, "Go to the family of so and so in such and such place among the Ansar. Tell them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sends his greetings to you and orders you to marry Rabi'ah the daughter of so and so." So I went to them and conveyed the message. They said, "Welcome to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ does not ask us for something without a reason." They honored me, married me to her, treated me kindly, and did not ask for any proof. I returned feeling sad, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me, "What's wrong?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I went to a noble people, they honored and treated me kindly, and did not ask for any proof. But where will I get the dowry?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Buraidah Al-Aslami, "O Buraidah, collect the weight of a date seed in gold for him." So they collected the weight of a date seed in gold for me. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Take it to them and say, 'This is her dowry.'" So I took it to them and said, "This is her dowry." They said, "It's a lot, but we accept it." Then I asked, "Where should I stay?" They said, "O Buraidah, give him a sheep." So they gave me a fat sheep. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go to Aishah and tell her to look at the dough in which the food is baked and send it to us." So I went to Aishah, told her about it, and she said, "Here it is, the dough in which the food is baked. By Allah, we don't have any other food in the morning." So I took it and the sheep to the Prophet ﷺ. They accepted the food and said, "You keep the sheep." Then some Muslims came, slaughtered, skinned, and cooked it. So we had bread and meat in the morning. I felt content and prayed for the blessings of the Muslims.

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "There will be a disturbance in the month of Ramadan that will awaken the sleeper and frighten the awake. Then a faction will appear in Shawwal, followed by commotion in Dhul-Hijjah. Then the sacred limits will be violated in Muharram, and death will occur in Safar. The tribes will then dispute in Rabee' al-Awwal. Astonishment, the greatest astonishment, will occur between Jumada I and Rajab. Then a she-camel that is used for carrying water will be better than a treasure of a hundred thousand."

The two sheikhs, Muslim and Bukhari, have cited narrators of this hadith, the last of whom is Ghayr al-Muslimah bin 'Ulayy al-Khushani. This hadith is a strange narration with an unknown source, and it has also been narrated by someone who is not considered as reliable in their narrations.

And whoever fasts for ten days, Allah will grant him whatever he asks for. And whoever fasts for fifteen days, a caller will announce in the heavens: 'May Allah forgive what has passed for you, so start anew.' And whoever does more, Allah will increase it. And in Rajab, Allah carried Noah in the ark, so he fasted in Rajab and commanded his companions to fast. The ark set sail with them for six months, until they landed on Mount Judi. And Noah and those with him expressed gratitude to Allah. And on the day of Ashura, Allah split the sea for the children of Israel. suyuti:16079aĀban > Anas

[Machine] “In Rajab there is a night in which the deeds of the doer are recorded as the good deeds of a hundred years. That is on the night when three nights remain of Rajab. Whoever prays on it twelve rak‘ahs, reciting in each rak‘ah the Opening of the Book (al-Fātiḥah) and a sūrah from the Qur’an, and recites the tashahhud in every two rak‘ahs and gives salām at the end of them, then says: ‘Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, and there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest’ one hundred times, and seeks Allah’s forgiveness one hundred times, and sends blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ one hundred times, and supplicates for himself whatever he wishes concerning the affairs of his worldly life and his Hereafter, and reaches the morning fasting—then Allah answers all of his supplication, except if he supplicates for an act of disobedience.”

Bayhaqī, in *Shuʿab al-Īmān*, narrated from Ābān, from Anas, and he said: “It is weaker than the one before it.”

suyuti:14457aAbu Saʿīd

[Machine] Rajab is one of the sacred months, and its days are written upon the gates of the sixth heaven. If a man fasts one day of it and renews his fast with mindfulness of God, the gate and the day speak, saying: “O Lord, forgive him.” But if he does not complete his fast with mindfulness of God, they do not ask forgiveness for him, and it is said: “Your soul has deceived you.”

Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Khallal, in *The Virtues of Rajab*, from Abu Sa‘id.
السيوطي:١٤٤٥٧a

suyuti:15041aUsāmah b. Zayd

[Machine] “Sha‘ban is between Rajab and the month of Ramadan; people are heedless of it. In it the deeds of the servants are raised up, so I love that my deeds not be raised except while I am fasting.”

Bayhaqī in *Shuʿab al-Īmān* from Usāmah ibn Zayd.
السيوطي:١٥٠٤١a

suyuti:4061aʿAlī

[Machine] “Increase in seeking forgiveness in the month of Rajab, for God has, in every hour of it, people freed from the Fire; and God has cities that none may enter except those who fast the month of Rajab.”

Daylamī from ʿAlī
السيوطي:٤٠٦١a

suyuti:14033a

[Machine] “The choicest of God’s months is the month of Rajab, and it is God’s month. Whoever venerates God’s month of Rajab has venerated God’s command, and whoever venerates God’s command, He will admit him to the Gardens of bliss and will make His greatest pleasure incumbent for him.

Shaban is my month; whoever venerates the month of Shaban has venerated my command, and whoever venerates my command, I will be for him a forerunner and a ذخيرة (a reserve/treasure) on the Day of Resurrection.

The month of Ramadan is the month of my community; whoever venerates the month of Ramadan and venerates its sanctity and does not violate it, and fasts its days, and stands in prayer at its nights, and guards his limbs, will depart from Ramadan with no sin for which God will call him to account.”

Bayhaqī's Shuʿab al-Īmān from Anas and he said that its chain is munkar

suyuti:673-500bʿĀʾishah

[Machine] On the authority of ʿĀʾishah, she said: A woman mentioned to her that she fasts in Rajab, so she said: If you must fast a month, then fast Shaʿbān, for in it there is merit.

Ibn Zanjawayh

The story of the formation of the Hijri calendar by Umar b. al-Khattab

suyuti:2-1953bIbn Sīrīn

A man from among the Muslims came from the land of Yemen and said to ʿUmar: “In Yemen I have seen something they call ‘dating’ (the calendar): they write ‘from such-and-such a year and such-and-such a month.’” ʿUmar said: “This is good—so date your documents.”

When he had resolved to establish a dating system, he consulted them. Some said: “From the Prophet’s ﷺ birth.” Others said: “From the beginning of his mission.” Others said: “From the time he set out as an emigrant from Makkah.” And one said: “From the time of his death, when he passed away.” Some said: “Date it from his departure from Makkah to Medinah.”

Then he said: “With what shall we begin, so that we make it the first of the year?” They said: “Rajab, for the people of the pre-Islamic period used to venerate it.” Others said: “The month of Ramadan.” Some said: “Dhu al-Hijjah.” Others said: “The month in which he departed from Makkah.” Others said: “The month in which he arrived.” Then ʿUthmān said: “Date it from Muharram as the first of the year. It is a sacred month; it is the first of the months in the reckoning; and it is when people return from the Hajj. So make Muharram the first of the year.” That was in the year 17 AH, and it is also said: 16 AH, in Rabiʿ al-Awwal.

Ibn Abū Khuthaymah's Tārīkh
