19. Chapter of ʿAyn (Male) (1/147)
[Machine] "I swear by nine that the Ibn Sayyad is the Dajjal is more beloved to me than swearing by one, and I swear by nine that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was martyred is more beloved to me than swearing by one that he was not martyred because Allah made him a prophet and took him as a martyr."
[Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was praying, so I greeted him, but he did not respond to me. When he finished his prayer, he said: "Verily, Allah informs His Prophet of what He wills, and one of the things He has informed me is to not speak during the prayer."
[Machine] We used to talk during prayer, greeting each other and indicating our needs. One day, I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was praying, so I greeted him but he did not respond to me. He gestured to me what had happened and what was said. When he finished, he said, "Indeed, Allah speaks of His affairs as He wills, and He has informed me that you should not speak during prayer."
[Machine] Ibn Masud, we used to say salaam to the Prophet ﷺ while he was praying, and he would respond to us. But when I returned from Abyssinia, I said salaam to him and he did not respond to me. He then started narrating to me everything, whatever had passed and what happened in my absence. Then I waited for him until he finished his prayer, and I mentioned that incident to him. He said: Verily, Allah speaks whatever He wills and He has spoken to me. And He informed me that I should not speak during the prayer.
[Machine] We used to speak during prayer and greet each other, and one of us would indicate to his companion about a need. So, one day I came and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying, so I greeted him but he did not respond to me. He held me by the shoulders and told me what was before and what will happen. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished, he said, "Verily, Allah speaks of His affairs as He wills, and indeed He has ordered that you do not speak during the prayer."
[Machine] People used to return greetings to each other in prayer, until Ibn Mas'ud greeted the Prophet ﷺ and he did not respond. So Ibn Mas'ud felt sad, thinking that something might have happened to him. When the Prophet ﷺ finished his prayer, he mentioned that to Ibn Mas'ud, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, in prayer, there is occupation, and it is sufficient as occupation."
[Machine] "He went out to the land of Abyssinia and the people would greet each other in the prayer. When Abdullah returned, he greeted the Prophet ﷺ but did not receive a response. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished and left, he said, 'I seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger. I greeted you and you did not respond.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, in prayer there is focus.'"
We used to greet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was engaged in prayer and he would respond to our greeting. But when we returned from the Negus we greeted him and he did not respond to us; so we said: Messenger of Allah. we used to greet you when you were engaged in prayer and you would respond to us. He replied: Prayer demands whole attention. (Using translation from Muslim 538a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, in prayer there is occupation."
[Machine] He used to send greetings upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was praying, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would respond to him with greetings. Then, he sent greetings upon him while he was praying, but he did not respond to him. Abdullah thought this was due to a reason from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . When he finished, Abdullah said, "O Messenger of Allah, I used to send greetings upon you while you were praying and you would respond to me, but today I sent greetings upon you and you did not respond to me. I thought there might be a reason for that." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No, but we were forbidden from speaking during prayer except with the Quran and remembrance."
[Machine] We used to greet the Prophet ﷺ during prayer, and he would reply to us. But one day, I greeted him and he didn't reply to me. So, I asked him about it, and he said, "Allah ﷻ does as He wishes in His affairs."
[Machine] We used to talk during prayer, greeting each other. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, Allah speaks to His people in whatever way He wills, and He has just decreed that you should not speak during Salah."

[Machine] I went out for a need, and some of us greeted each other in the prayer, then I returned and greeted, but he did not respond to me and said, "There is indeed a distraction in prayer."
[Machine] I was hidden behind the curtains of the Kaaba when three individuals arrived: Thaqafi and two Qurayshi men, who were extremely fat but lacked knowledge. They engaged in conversation, and one of them said, "Do you think Allah hears what we say?" The other replied, "If we raise our voices, He hears us, but if we lower them, He does not." The third said, "If He hears us when we raise our voices, then He surely hears us when we lower them." I then went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of this. Allah revealed the verse {And you were not covering yourselves, lest your hearing testify against you or your sight or your skins, but you assumed that Allah does not know much of what you do} until [the phrase] {from the losers}. This narration is reported by Sufyan al-Thawri, while Abu Muawiya and the companions of al-A'mash disagree with him.
[Machine] Abdullah, I was hiding behind the curtains of the Kaaba when three individuals came, their bellies were full but their understanding was little. One was from the Quraysh, and the other two were from the Thaqif. They spoke in a language that I did not understand. One of them said, "Do you think Allah hears our conversation?" The other replied, "When we raise our voices, he hears them, but if we don't raise them, he won't hear." The third individual said, "If he hears anything from us, he hears everything." I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and then Allah revealed the verse, "And you were not hiding yourselves, lest your hearing testify against you or your sight or your skins" (Quran 41:22).
[Machine] "I was hiding behind the Kaaba's cover, and in the mosque, there was a man from Thaqeef who had been circumcised by the Quraishites. He said, 'Do you think Allah can hear our whispers?' One of them said, 'He can hear us when we raise our voices.' The other one said, 'If He can hear us when we raise our voices, then He can hear us when we lower them.' Ibn Mas'ud said, 'So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of what they said.' So Allah revealed the verse, 'And you were not covering yourselves lest your hearing testify against you or your sight or your skins,' until the end of the verse. And Ibn Mas'ud differed from them."

[Machine] Three people sat at the door of the Kaaba, two from the Quraysh and a Thaqafi. One of them whispered something to another, saying, "Do you think Allah hears what we say?" One of them replied, "As for what we speak aloud, He hears, and as for what we whisper, He also hears." Then, Allah revealed the verse, "And you were not concealing yourselves" (Quran, 2:33).
[Machine] Abdullah, I have performed two units of prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, two units with Abu Bakr, and two units with Umar, then our paths separated. I wish I had two accepted units of prayer from the four units.

[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a cave when the verse {And the wind-carrying clouds} was revealed to him. He said, "I feel that it is about to rain, so I will seek shelter from it." His mouth was wet when a snake appeared and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Kill it!" But it escaped. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, it spared you from its evil just as you spared it from being killed."

[Machine] We were with the Prophet ﷺ in a cave in Mina, when a snake jumped towards us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Kill it." We hurried to kill it, but it was faster than us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Your evil has been prevented, just as its evil has been prevented."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ ordered the killing of a snake in the Haram.
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered the killing of a snake in Mina."
[Machine] "We were with the Prophet ﷺ in a cave when a snake came out. He said, 'Kill it.' But it was faster than us and he said, 'Your evil has been warded off, just as its evil has been warded off.'"
[Machine] "Abdullah, the messengers were sent down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while we were in the cave, and I read them to him. Indeed, I recite them closely in a manner different from his recitation, so I do not know which of us is closer in recitation. I do not know what the conclusion of that verse is, whether it ends with 'When it is said to them, 'prostrate,' they do not prostrate" or 'So in what statement after it will they believe?'"
عَبْدُ اللهِ أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْمُرْسَلَاتُ وَنَحْنُ فِي غَارٍ وَأَقْرَأَنِيهَا وَإِنِّي لَأَقْرَؤُهَا قَرِيبًا مِمَّا أَقْرَأَنِي فَمَا أَدْرِي بِأَيِّ خَاتِمَتَيْهَا خَتَمَ {إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ارْكَعُوا لَا يَرْكَعُونَ} أَوْ {فَبِأَيِّ حَدِيثٍ بَعْدَهُ يُؤْمِنُونَ}
[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a cave when the sent angels came and I grabbed hold of their reins. His mouth was moist with it and I did not know which of the two sentences would be sealed: "So, by which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?" or "But when they are told, 'Bow down [in prostration],' they do not bow down?" Then it slipped away from him because of a snake that crawled into its hole, and he said, "You were saved from its evil and you were saved from its harm."
[Machine] It came down upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the night of Al-Hayyah. We said, "O Abu Abdur-Rahman, what is the night of Al-Hayyah?" He said, "I was with him when a snake came out to us, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Seek it.'" So we sought it and it overpowered us until it entered its hole. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, 'Leave it, for Allah has protected you from its evil and protected it from your evil.'"
[Machine] Narrated Abdullah: We were with the Prophet ﷺ in a cave, and the messengers were revealed to him while we were gathered. We used to receive revelation from him when he was in a state of wetness. Suddenly, a snake came towards us, and we hurried to kill it, but it escaped. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Your evil was repelled, and its evil was also repelled."
[Machine] While we were in the Mosque of Al-Khaif on the night of Arafah, we heard the hissing of a snake. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Kill it." So it entered into a hole and he brought a torch and set it on fire. Then we emptied some of the holes, but we did not find it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave it, Allah has protected you from its evil and protected it from your harm."
[Machine] We were with the Prophet ﷺ in Mina, when the Surah Al-Mursalat was revealed to him. Suddenly, he saw a snake and they tried to catch it but it escaped from their hands. The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have been protected from its evil as you have protected me."

[Machine] We were with the Prophet ﷺ in a cave when the messengers came down to him. We received them from inside the cave when a snake appeared to us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Kill it." So we killed it. Then it went into its hole and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, it was saved from your evil just as you were saved from its evil."

[Machine] "Let none of you make himself a part of Satan and fail to see it fit for him to deviate from his right side. Indeed, I have seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ most often turn away from his left side."
None of you should give a share to Satan out of your self. He should not deem that it is necessary for him to turn but to the right only (after prayer). I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turning to the left. (Using translation from Muslim 707a)

[Machine] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ use his right hand more often than his left, and this is what the companions of Al-A'mash reported. Al-Hajjaj ibn Arta'ah contradicted them.
