We used to greet the Prophet ﷺ while he was praying and he used to answer our greetings. When we returned from An-Najashi (the ruler of Ethiopia), we greeted him, but he did not answer us (during the prayer) and (after finishing the prayer) he said, "In the prayer one is occupied (with a more serious matter)."

كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا فَلَمَّا رَجَعْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِ النَّجَاشِيِّ سَلَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْنَا وَقَالَ إِنَّ فِي الصَّلاَةِ شُغْلاً

I used to greet the Prophet ﷺ while he was in prayer and he would return my greeting, but when we returned (from Ethiopia) I greeted the Prophet (while he was praying) but he did not return the greeting, and (after finishing the prayer) he said, "In the prayer one is occupied (with a more serious matter)."

But when we returned from the Negus we greeted him and he did not respond to us; so we said: Messenger of Allah. we used to greet you when you were engaged in prayer and you would respond to us. He replied: Prayer demands whole attention.

We used to salute the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was engaged in prayer and he would respond to our salutation, but when we returned from the Negas, we saluted him and he did not respond to us. He said : Prayer demands one’s whole attention.

"I used to come to the Prophet ﷺ when he was praying, and I would greet him with Salam, he would return my greeting. Then I came to him when he was praying, and he did not return my greeting. When he said the Taslim, he pointed to the people and said: "Allah (SWT) has decreed that in the prayer you should not speak except to remember Allah (SWT), and it is not appropriate for you, and that you should stand before Allah (SWT) with obedience.'"

كُنْتُ آتِي النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَأُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِ فَيَرُدُّ عَلَىَّ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَىَّ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ أَشَارَ إِلَى الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ يَعْنِي أَحْدَثَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ أَنْ لاَ تَكَلَّمُوا إِلاَّ بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَمَا يَنْبَغِي لَكُمْ وَأَنْ تَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ

[AI] "I used to greet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the prayer, and he would reply to me. But one day, when I greeted him, he did not reply to me. I felt something in myself, so when he finished, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, when I greet you during the prayer, you reply to me. Why did you not reply to me?' He said, 'Verily, Allah Almighty does what He wills in His affairs.'"

كُنْتُ أُسَلِّمُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَيَرُدُّ عَلَيَّ فَلَمَّا كَانَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَوَجَدْتُ فِي نَفْسِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي إِذَا كُنْتُ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْكَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ رَدَدْتَ عَلَيَّ؟ قَالَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ يُحْدِثُ فِي أَمْرِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ

[AI] "I used to say goodbye to the Prophet ﷺ while he was in prayer, and he would respond to me. One day, I greeted him and he did not respond to me at all. I found this strange within myself, so I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I used to greet you while you were in prayer and you would respond to me. But today, when I greeted you, you did not respond.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, Allah speaks about His affairs as He wills.'"

كُنْتُ أُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَيَرُدُّ عَلَيَّ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ شَيْئًا فَوَجَدْتُ فِي نَفْسِي فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كُنْتُ أُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَوَأَنْتَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَتَرُدُّ عَلَيَّ وَإِنِّي سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْكَ فَلَمْ تَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ شَيْئًا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ يُحْدِثُ فِي أَمْرِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ sent me on an errand. When I returned, I greeted him, but he did not respond. When he finished, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I greeted you but you did not respond." He said, "I was praying while facing a direction other than the qiblah."

بَعَثَنِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِي حَاجَةٍ فَلَمَّا رَجَعْتُ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْكَ فَلَمْ تَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ؟ قَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي وَهُوَ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ مُتَوَجِّهًا لِغَيْرِ الْقِبْلَةِ
