27. Book of the Companions (16/53)
[Machine] As for the two sheikhs, they did not mention anything beyond the virtues. We have started in the first mention of the companion by discussing his lineage and death, then we mentioned what is valid about their conditions from their virtues that they did not mention. So I did not forget to mention Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi and his peers in knowledge.
[Machine] "Do you not ask me about what I said? So we said, 'We liked what you said, so we ask you about it.' He said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Whoever spends in the path of Allah, it will be multiplied by seven hundred. And whoever spends on himself, his family, or a sick person or anything that increases, the reward of that will be tenfold. And fasting is a shield as long as it is not violated. And whoever Allah afflicts with a calamity in his body, he will have his sins forgiven."' Adh-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary."
[Machine] I heard Yahia bin Sa'id say, "Abu Ubaidah died at the age of fifty-eight."
[Machine] Abu 'Ubaidah al-Jarrah died in Jordan in the year eighteen and Mouadh Ibn Jabal performed his funeral prayer.
[Machine] "I did not aspire for leadership, nor did I desire it, except that some people from the people of Najran came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and complained about their governor. So he said, 'I will send a trustworthy person over you.' Omar said, 'I was hoping that he would appoint me for this task, but he sent Abu Ubaidah instead.' This hadith is considered authentic according to the criteria of both Bukhari and Muslim."
[Machine] The messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is none of my companions except that if I wanted to, I would have taken from him some of his good character, except for Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah." This is a strange narration, and its narrators are trustworthy.
[Machine] Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq said to Abu Ubaidah when he was sending him to Sham: "I want you to know your high status and position in my eyes. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, there is no one on earth, from the Muhajireen or others, who I consider more just than you. This does not mean that Umar is not esteemed by me, but he is beneath you in status according to me." The source of this narration is unclear.
[Machine] I was among the first ones who fought on the day of Uhud, and I was standing in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man came and fought against me. I could see him saying, "Woe to him, may Allah protect him." So I said, "Be like Talhah, wherever he goes, I will follow even if I miss what I had missed." He replied, "Between me and the east, there is a man whom I do not know. I am closer to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than him, and he is snatching the prey aggressively, which I cannot snatch." Suddenly, it was Abu 'Ubaidah bin al-Jarrah, so we all pushed towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . His ribs were broken and his face was injured. Two pieces from the cheek of Maghfar (a type of tree used to clean teeth) had entered his jaw. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us, "Take care of your companion," referring to Talhah who was bleeding. He did not even look at him. So we went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and I wanted what Abu 'Ubaidah wanted and he asked me about it, and he did not leave me until I left him. His cheek wound had festered and he did not want to disturb it with his hand, for fear of hurting the Prophet ﷺ . He held it with his finger and pulled it out, and his cheek wound worsened. He asked me again, and did not leave me until I left him. Then he moved to the other side and did the same, pulling it out and worsening his cheek wound. Abu 'Ubaidah was meticulous about his wounds.

[Machine] "Abu Ubaidah Amr bin al-Jarrah embraced Islam along with Uthman bin Mazh'un, Abdul Rahman bin Awf and their companions before the arrival of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the house of Arqam. Abu Ubaidah migrated to the land of Abyssinia for the second migration. He participated in the Battle of Badr and Uhud, and remained steadfast with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Uhud when the people were defeated. Abu Ubaidah removed the two rings from his fingers, which were given to him by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as a sign of forgiveness for his sins. Both rings fell off his fingers and were lost. Abu Ubaidah was the most sincere among the believers in this regard."
[Machine] I heard Abdullah ibn Wahb saying, "The inscription on the ring of Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah is 'Al-Wafa' is dear'."
[Machine] "The chief and the nobleman from Najran came to the Prophet ﷺ , intending to curse him. One of them said to his companion, 'Don't do it. By Allah, if he is indeed a Prophet, we will be cursed and will not succeed in this life or the hereafter.' They responded, 'Rather, we will give you what you asked for and will send a trustworthy man with you.' They sought the opinion of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said, 'Stand up, Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah.' When he stood up, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'This is the trustworthy one of this nation.' The two sheikhs agreed to include this narration, in a summarised form, in the Sahihain (i.e. Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim), from the narration of Al-Thawri and Shu'bah, from Abu Ishaq, from Silla bin Zufar, from Hudhaifah. However, Israel narrated differently, from Silla bin Zufar, from Abdullah, and he transmitted the narration in a more complete form according to what is found with Al-Thawri and Shu'bah. I included it because it fulfills their conditions, making it authentic according to Al-Bukhari and Muslim."

[Machine] The people of Yemen came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Send along with us a man who can teach us the Quran." So he took the hand of Abu Ubaidah and sent him with them, saying, "This is a trustworthy person of this Ummah." This narration is authentic according to the conditions of Imam Muslim, and they did not mention the Quran according to the conditions of Imam Muslim.

Abu Ubaydah replied, 'How can I lead the prayer in front of a man whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered to lead us when he was alive?' 'It is a Sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and they did not mention it,' [meaning the scholars did not mention the authenticity of the chain].'"

narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What an excellent man is Abu Bakr, what an excellent man is 'Umar, what an excellent man is Abu 'Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah, what an excellent man is Usaid bin Hudair, what an excellent man is Thabit bin Qais bin Shammas, what an excellent man is Mua'dh bin Jabal, and what an excellent man is Mu'adh bin 'Amr bin Al-Jamuh."
[Machine] About Ibn Ishaq, he said: "In the naming of those who witnessed the Battle of Uhud, Mu'adh bin Jabal bin Amr bin Aws bin A'idh bin 'Adi bin Ka'b bin Ghanm bin Sa'd bin 'Ali bin Asad bin Yazid bin Jusham, he was from the tribe of Banu Salamah. He witnessed the Battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and all other battles. He died in the year of the plague, during the caliphate of Umar bin Khattab. The Banu Salamah claimed him as their kin because he was a brother to one of them."

[Machine] Mu'adh ibn Jabal ibn 'Amr ibn 'Aadhi ibn Ka'ab ibn 'Amr ibn Adda ibn Sa'd ibn 'Ali ibn Asad ibn Saridah ibn Yazid ibn Jusham. He witnessed the Battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Al-Dhahabi deleted him from the summary due to his weakness.

[Machine] "Muadh bin Jabal was captured at the age of thirty-three or thirty-four." This statement is closer to accuracy from Yahya bin Sa'id than the previous one.
[Machine] I entered the mosque of Damascus and behold, I saw a man adorned with eloquence, tall in stature and quiet in nature. Whenever people disagreed on something, they would defer to him and relinquish their own opinions. I inquired about him and was told that he was Muadh ibn Jabal. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about him in the summary.

[Machine] The following translation is a saying I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ :
"Verily, the slightest form of showing off is a form of polytheism (shirk). And the most beloved of Allah's servants are the most pious ones who hide their good deeds and qualities. They are those who, when absent, are not missed, and when present, are not acknowledged. They are the leaders of guidance and the torchbearers of knowledge."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration and wasn't narrated by Abu Qahtham. Abu Hatim said his hadith should not be written down, and Al-Nasa'i considered his trustworthiness doubtful.

When Mu'adh saw his father, he said, "Abdulrahman says, 'The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters.'" (Al-Baqarah 147) Mu'adh said, "You will find me, by the will of Allah, among the patient." (As-Saffat 102) From Friday to Friday, all the family of Mu'adh died, and he was the last of them.

[Machine] When the Prophet ﷺ passed away and Abu Bakr was appointed as his successor, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Muadh to Yemen and Abu Bakr appointed Umar to be in charge of Makkah during the pilgrimage season. Umar met Muadh in Makkah and saw that he had slaves with him, so he asked, "Who are these?" Muadh replied, "They are gifts for me, and these are gifts for Abu Bakr." Umar suggested that he bring them to Abu Bakr, so he met him the next day and said, "O Ibn Al-Khattab! I saw myself last night being dragged towards the Hellfire, while you were holding onto my reins, and I did not see anything except that I was obedient to you." Abu Bakr then brought them and said, "These are gifts for me, and these are for you." Abu Bakr replied, "We have already handed over your gifts to you." Muadh then went to perform the prayer, and to his surprise, he found the people praying behind him. He asked, "Who are you praying to?" They replied, "To Allah, the Almighty." Muadh exclaimed, "If you are praying to Allah, then you should set them free." [Machine] Mu'adh ibn Jabal was a young, gentle, and kind man, one of the best among his people's youth. He did not hold onto anything, and his hands were always open to give until he drowned all his wealth in charity. "So his creditors came to the Prophet ﷺ." If they had left anyone for the sake of anyone, they would have left Mu'adh for the sake of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sold his belongings to them until Mu'adh was left with nothing."

[Machine] He received news that his son had died, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to him to offer condolences. The message said: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, to Muadh ibn Jabal: Peace be upon you. I praise Allah to you, there is no deity except Him. After that, may Allah grant you great reward, inspire you with patience, and provide us and you with gratitude. Indeed, our lives, wealth, families, and children are gifts from Allah, the Exalted. Enjoy them with happiness and pleasure, and when the time comes, may you receive great reward for it. May Allah bless you with prayers, mercy, and guidance if you seek it. Be patient, and do not let your grief undermine your reward, causing you to regret. Know that grief does not repel anything or alleviate sadness. That is all, peace be upon you." This is a strange, good narration, except that the inclusion of Mujashi' ibn 'Amr is not a condition for this letter.

[Machine] Mu'adh ibn Jabal was among the best people in appearance, best in manners, and most forgiving. He was very religious, so his debts became heavy on him until he secluded himself from people for several days in his house. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to pay off his debts, so he sent a messenger to Mu'adh to summon him. Mu'adh came with his creditors and they said, "O Messenger of Allah, take our rights from him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on those who give charity to others." Some people gave their rights up, while others refused. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, take our rights from him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Be patient with them, O Mu'adh, and you have no other option." Mu'adh then went to Banu Salamah, and someone said to him, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, if you had asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , you would not have become destitute today." Mu'adh replied, "I would not have asked him." He remained there for some time until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him and sent him to Yemen, saying, "Perhaps Allah will relieve you of your debt and fulfill it for you." Mu'adh went to Yemen and remained there until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away. During the year in which Umar ibn al-Khattab performed Hajj, he assigned Mu'adh as his deputy for Hajj. They met on the day of Tarwiyah and embraced Islam. Each of them comforted the other with the companionship of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Then they went to the ground and conversed. Umar saw young boys with Mu'adh and asked, "Who are these?" Then he mentioned the words that have been omitted from the summary due to their weakness.
