27. Book of the Companions (15/53)

٢٧۔ كِتَابُ مَعْرِفَةِ الصَّحَابَةِ ؓ ص ١٥

[Machine] As for the two sheikhs, they did not mention anything beyond the virtues. We have started in the first mention of the companion by discussing his lineage and death, then we mentioned what is valid about their conditions from their virtues that they did not mention. So I did not forget to mention Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi and his peers in knowledge.

[Machine] "I find something in my back, but it didn't take long for it to die, and the jinn wailed, saying, '[The Fast Camel]: We killed the leader of the Khazraj, Saad ibn Ubada, and we threw him with two arrows, but it did not pierce his heart." (Note: The last part of the sentence seems to be incorrect and is unclear, possibly due to a typing error or incomplete translation.)

[Machine] That when Abu Sufyan approached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr spoke to him, but he turned away from him. Then Umar spoke to him, but he turned away from him as well. Sa'd bin 'Ubadah said, "O Messenger of Allah, I swear by the One in whose hand is my soul, if you command us to enter the sea, we will enter it and if you command us to strike the mountains, we will do so." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ requested the people, and they set out until they reached Badr. This narration is authentic according to the conditions of Imam Muslim, but he did not include it in his collection. Al-Dhahabi omitted mentioning it in his summary.

hakim:5105Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb > al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. ʿAffān > Abū Usāmah > Hishām b. ʿUrwah from his father

[Machine] Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah used to say, "O Allah, grant me honor and glory, for there is no glory except through actions, and there are no actions except through wealth. O Allah, being insignificant does not benefit me, and I do not benefit others even if I were to call out upon deaf ears. Whoever desires fat and meat, let him come to Sa'd." (This narration was excluded by Al-Dhahabi from the summary due to its weakness.)

[Machine] "The polytheists took Saad bin Ubada and tied his hands to his neck, then they entered him into Mecca, hitting him and dragging him by his beard. He was a man with a long, thick beard." His deletion was mentioned by Al-Dhahabi in the summary due to his weakness.

[Machine] I asked the Prophet ﷺ, and he commanded me to fulfill it for her. It is agreed upon by the two sheikhs that this hadith should be excluded. Um Saad ibn Ubada passed away and they did not reach out to him regarding it, and this is considered authentic according to their condition.

[Machine] Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim was the brother of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ through breastfeeding, and his cousin nursed him. Halimah nursed him for a few days, and he became familiar with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent as a Prophet, Abu Sufyan opposed him and criticized him, and his companions did the same. He remained angry with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for twenty years, never leaving a place where the Quraysh went to fight against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. However, in the year of the Conquest, Allah instilled Islam in his heart when the qualities of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were mentioned to him in Makkah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted him as a Muslim before he descended from Abu Awa. Abu Sufyan, his son Ja'far, and he accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and witnessed the Conquest of Makkah and the Battle of Hunayn. Abu Sufyan said, "When we encountered the enemy at Hunayn, I charged on my horse with my sword in my hand, swearing by Allah that I desired death except for him, while he was looking at me. Abbas called out, 'O Messenger of Allah, this is your brother and your cousin, Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith. Accept his apology.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I have forgiven him; may Allah forgive him for all the enmity he showed towards me.' Then, he turned towards me and said, 'O my brother, by my life,' and I kissed his foot in the stirrup." It is said that Abu Sufyan passed away in Madinah after his brother Nawfal ibn al-Harith, four months and thirteen nights after him. Others say he passed away in the twentieth year. Umar ibn al-Khattab led the funeral prayer for him, and he was buried in the cemetery of al-Baqi in the grave that Aqil ibn Abi Talib had dug for himself three days before he died. "I have mentioned the Islam of my father Sufyan in the Conquest of Makkah, as previously mentioned." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about him in his summary.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith is the best among my family." It is authentic according to the condition of Muslim and al-Dhahabi did not mention it in his summary.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, "The chief of the boys of Paradise is Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn Abdul-Muttalib." He said, "He got his hair trimmed in Mina, and there were lice in his head, so he cut it off and died. It is believed that he is a martyr." Adh-Dhahabi did not mention it in the abridgment.

[Machine] A man had some dates with him and he brought them to the Prophet ﷺ to sell them. The Prophet ﷺ borrowed some dates from Bint Hakeem and gave them to the man. Then he said, "I had some dates with me, but they were dry". Then he said, "This is how the believing servants of Allah are, and Allah does not have mercy on a nation in which the strong do not give the weak their rights without being harsh". Abu Sufyan did not narrate anything from the Prophet ﷺ except this one hadith, and he did not establish its chain of narration except from Shu'ba, other than Ghundar. Abu Al-Abbas As-Sayyari informed us, Abu Al-Muwajih informed me, and I am Abdan. 'Utba b. Ghazwan delivered us a sermon and he praised Allah and lauded Him, then said: Now coming to the point, verily the world has been given the news of its end and that too quite early. Nothing would be left out of it but only water left in the utensil which its owner leaves, and you are going to shift to an abode which knows no end, and you should shift with the good before you, for we have been told that a stone would be thrown at one side of the Hell and it would go down even for seventy years but would not be able to reach its bottom. By Allah, it would be fully packed. Do you find it something strange, and it has been mentioned that there yawns a distance which one would be able to cover in forty years from one end to another of Paradise, and a day would come when it would be fully packed and you must be knowing that I was the seventh amongst seven who had been with Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we had nothing to eat but the leaves of the tree until the corners of the mouth were injured. We found a sheet which we tore in two and divided between myself and Sa'd b. Malik. I made the lower garment with halt of it and so did Sa'd make the lower garment with half of it and today there is none amongst us who has not become the governor of a city from amongst the cities (of the Islamic Commonwealth) and I seek refuge with Allah that I should consider myself great whereas I am insignificant in the eye of Allah. Prophethood does not remain for ever and its impact fades with the result that it changes eventually into kingship, and you would soon come to know and experience those rulers who would come after us and see (how far they are from religion). He said, "The cousin of a people is considered one of them." Mentioning Utbah ibn Ghazwan in this hadith is very unusual and it has many virtues. This is why his virtues and narrations from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ are abundant. We have written a hadith about it that we found very surprising. Although it is not a condition for its inclusion in this book, its chain has some obscurities.

[Machine] Omar's book came to us when the pandemic occurred in Sham (Syria), so Omar wrote to Abu Ubaidah that there is a need that cannot be fulfilled by anyone but him. Abu Ubaidah replied, "May Allah have mercy on the Amir (leader) of the believers, he wants to keep a people who are not remaining." He then wrote back to him saying, "I am in one of the Muslim armies, and I do not prioritize myself over those who are affected by the pandemic." When he read the book, he reconsidered and said, "Abu Ubaidah has passed away." He said, "No, he wrote to him with determination to come from the land of Jordan, as it is deep and fertile, to the land of Al-Jabiya, as it is a fresh and beautiful place." When the book arrived with determination, he ordered his caller to announce to the people to depart. When he arrived to ride his mount, he placed his leg in the stirrup, then he pulled it back and said, "I see your disease only afflicting me." He said, "Abu Ubaidah passed away and the pandemic receded from the people. All the narrators of this Hadith are trustworthy, and it is a strange incident."
