[Machine] About his elders mentioning Umar ibn Ghazwan, they said, "His nickname was Abu Abdullah, and it was also said Abu Ghazwan. He was mentioned as a tall, handsome man and he was a Muslim since early times. He migrated to the land of Abyssinia during the second migration. He was among the known archers and among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He was the one who conquered Basra. He died during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab in Bani Salim mines while he was heading towards Basra as its governor, appointed by Umar ibn al-Khattab. His servant Sued presented Umar with his possessions and left." Ibn Umar said, "Umar ibn Ghazwan died in the fifteenth or seventeenth year. It is said he was fifty-seven years old."  

الحاكم:٥١٣٦حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَطَّةَ ثنا الْحَسَنُ ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ

عَنْ شُيُوخِهِ فِي ذِكْرِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ غَزْوَانَ قَالُوا «كُنْيَتُهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَقِيلَ أَبُو غَزْوَانَ وَكَانَ فِيمَا ذُكِرَ رَجُلًا طُوَالًا جَمِيلًا وَكَانَ قَدِيمَ الْإِسْلَامِ وَهَاجَرَ إِلَى أَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ الْهِجْرَةَ الثَّانِيَةَ وَكَانَ مِنَ الرُّمَاةِ الْمَذْكُورِينَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ الَّذِي بَصَّرَ الْبَصْرَةَ وَمَاتَ فِي خِلَافَةِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ بِمَعْدِنِ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ وَهُوَ مَاضٍ إِلَى الْبَصْرَةِ وَالِيًا عَلَيْهَا مِنْ قِبَلِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَقَدِمَ غُلَامُهُ سُوَيْدُ عَلَى عُمَرَ بِمَتَاعِهِ وَتَرِكَتِهِ» قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ «وَإِنَّمَا مَاتَ عُتْبَةُ بْنُ غَزْوَانَ سَنَةَ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ وَيُقَالُ سَبْعَ عَشْرَةَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ سَبْعٍ وَخَمْسِينَ»
