27. Book of the Companions (28/53)
[Machine] As for the two sheikhs, they did not mention anything beyond the virtues. We have started in the first mention of the companion by discussing his lineage and death, then we mentioned what is valid about their conditions from their virtues that they did not mention. So I did not forget to mention Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi and his peers in knowledge.
[Machine] The translation of the given text is: "Wala' ibn Abdullah ibn Salam was loyal to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he died in the year forty-three."
[Machine] About Dhahak's saying about Allah's statement: "And a witness from the Children of Israel testified to its like" [Surah Al-Ahqaf 10], he said, "The witness is Abdullah ibn Salam, and he was one of the virtuous scholars from the Children of Israel."
I was sitting in a circle in the mosque of Medina and there was an old man, quite handsome. He was 'Abdullah b. Salim. He was telling good things to them (to the people sitting in that company). As he stood up (to depart) the people said: He who is desirous of looking at a person from amongst the people of Paradise should see him. I said: By Allah, I will follow him, and would try to know his residence. So I followed him and he walked on until he reached the outskirts of Medina. He then entered his house. I sought permission from him to get in, and he granted me the permission, saying: My nephew, what is the need (that has brought you here)? I said to him: As you stood up, I heard people say about you: He who is desirous of seeing a person from among the people of Paradise should look at him. So I became desirous of accompanying you. He ('Abdullah b. Salim) said: It is Allah Who knows best about the people of Paradise. I would, however, narrate to you as to why they said like it. (The story is) that while I was asleep (one night) there came to me a person (in the dream) who asked me to stand up. (So I stood up) and he caught hold of my hand and I walked along with him, and, lo, I found some paths on my left and I was about to set out upon them. Thereupon he said to me Do not set yourself on (them) for these are the paths of the leftists (denizens of Hell-fire). Then there were paths leading to the right side, whereupon he said: Set yourself on these paths. We came across a hill and he said to me: Climb up, and I attempted to climb up that I fell upon my buttocks. I made several attempts (but failed to succeed). He led until he came to a pillar (so high) that its upper end touched the sky and its base was in the earth. And there was a handhold at its upper end. He said to me Climb over it. I said: How can I climb upon it, as its upper end touches the sky? He cought hold of my hand and pushed me up and I found myself suspended with the handhold. He then struck the pillar and it fell down, but I remained attached to that handhold until it was morning (and the dream was thus over). I came to Allah's Apostle ﷺ and narrated it to him. He said: So far as the paths which you saw on your left are concerned, these are paths of the leftists (denizens of Hell) and the paths which you saw on your right, these are the paths of the rightists (the dwellers of Paradise) and the mountain represents the destination of the martyrs which you would not be able to attain. The pillar implies the pillar of Islam. and so far as the handhold is concerned, it implies the handhold of Islam, and you would hold to it fastly until you would meet death. (Using translation from Muslim 2484c)

[Machine] The Prophet (pbuh) and I entered a Jewish synagogue. He said, "O people of Jews, show me twelve men who bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and Allah will remove the anger from any Jew that they are beneath the sky." None of them responded to him, so he said, "Have you denied? By Allah, I am the last, the final, and the chosen Prophet. Have you believed in me, or have you rejected me?" Then we left, and as we were about to exit, a man from behind us said, "O Muhammad, just as you are, how do I know you, O people of Jews?" They replied, "By Allah, we do not know of anyone among us who is more knowledgeable of the Book of Allah than you, nor do we know of anyone who understands it better than you, your father before you, or your grandfather before your father." He said, "Indeed, I bear witness for him with Allah that he is the Prophet of Allah whom you find mentioned in the Torah." They said, "You have lied!" Then they accused him of evil. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, "You have lied, and your word will not be accepted. If you praise him when he deserves it, and then deny him when he believes, your word will not be accepted." Then we left, and there were three of us; the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), Abdullah ibn Salam, and myself. Allah revealed in reference to this incident, "Say, 'Have you considered: if it is from Allah and you disbelieved in it?" [Surah Al-Ahqaf: 10]. This hadith is recorded in the collections of Al-Bukhari and Muslim, based on the conditions of both scholars, and they did not exclude it. It is agreed upon that it is a summarized narration from Anas, and Abdullah ibn Salam was mentioned briefly.

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "He who has an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart will not enter Paradise." This hadith is authentic in its chain of narration and has not been mentioned in relation to Abdullah ibn Salam.
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Verily, he is one of the ten (people) in Paradise." The chain of narration is authentic, and it has not been excluded from being authentic.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was presented with a bowl, so he ate from it and then took out a piece and said, "A man from this valley, from the people of Paradise, will come and eat this." Sa'd said, "I had left 'Umair, my brother, performing ablution, and I said, 'He is 'Umair.' Then 'Abdullah bin Salam came and ate it." This hadith has a authentic chain of narration and has not been rejected.

27.145 [Machine] The mention of the virtues of Salamah bin Salamah bin Waqsh al-Ansari
[Machine] Salama bin Salama bin Waqsh bin Zughbah bin Zaa'urah bin Abdul Ashhal bin Jumah bin Jusham bin Al-Harith bin Al-Khazraj bin Amr bin Malik bin Aws.
[Machine] Concerning the naming of those who witnessed the Battle of al-Aqaba from the Ansar, then from the Aws, then from the Banu Abd al-Ashhal, "Salama ibn Waqsh witnessed the Battle of Badr."
[Machine] And Salamah witnessed all of Badr, Uhud, the Trench, and all the other battles alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He passed away in the year forty-five at the age of seventy, and he was buried in Madinah.

[Machine] Abu Awf passed away. Salamah ibn Salamah ibn Waqsh died in the year forty-five and was buried in Al-Madinah.
[Machine] We had a Jewish neighbor among the Bani Abdul Ashhal tribe. One day, he came out of his house and stopped in front of the Bani Abdul Ashhal tribe. Salamah said, "That day, I had a blanket with me that I was lying on in my family's courtyard. He mentioned the Day of Resurrection, the Afterlife, the Reckoning, the Scale, Paradise, and Hellfire." He said this to the people of Yathrib (before it became known as Madinah) who were pagans and did not believe in the resurrection after death. They said to him, "Woe to you! Do you think this will happen, O So-and-so?" He said, "Yes, by the One whom I swear by." They asked him, "What is the evidence for that?" He said, "There is a Prophet who will be sent from this region," and he pointed with his hand towards Makkah. They asked, "When will we see him?" He looked at me, being the youngest among them, and said, "This young boy will live until he meets him." Salamah said, "By Allah, night and day did not pass until Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, sent His Messenger ﷺ while he was alive amongst us, and we believed in him and rejected disbelief and envy." So we said to him, "Woe to you! Didn't you say something to us?" He said, "Yes, but it is not as authentic as the condition of a Muslim and it has not been mentioned in their books."

[Machine] From Salamah ibn Salamah ibn Waqsh, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who said that he entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in a state of ablution, so they ate and then they went out. Then Salamah performed ablution and Jabirah said to him, "Were you not already in a state of ablution?" Salamah replied, "Yes, but I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we left an invitation that we were invited to, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in a state of ablution, so he ate and then performed ablution." So I said to him, "Were you not already in a state of ablution, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Yes, but it is a matter that may occur, and this is from what has occurred before." Al-Layth ibn Sa'ad said, Zaid ibn Jabirah narrated to me from his father, Jabirah ibn Mahmoud, that his grandfather, Salamah, was one of the last companions of the Prophet ﷺ to pass away, except for Anas ibn Malik, as he remained after him according to the stipulation of Muslim.

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Allah forgive the Ansar and the children of the Ansar, and the children of the children of the Ansar, and the women of the Ansar." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3909)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ met a man from the people of the desert who was heading towards Badr. He met him at Rawhaa and the people asked him about the news of the people, but he did not have any news. So they said to him, "Give our greetings to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, "Is there a Messenger of Allah among you?" They replied, "Yes." The Bedouin man said, "If you are the Messenger of Allah, then tell me what is in the belly of my camel?" Salamah bin Salamah bin Waqsh, who was a young boy, answered, "Do not ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I will inform you. You have defecated in her belly." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have embarrassed the man, O Salamah." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from the man and did not speak to him until they left. When the Muslims reached them at Rawhaa, they congratulated them. Salamah bin Salamah said, "O Messenger of Allah, what are they congratulating you for?" He said, "Indeed, every nation has intelligence and it is only recognized by the nobility." This Hadith has a sound chain of narrators even though it is Mursal, and it contains a noble quality of Salamah bin Salamah.

[Machine] I and my brother bought a hundred arrows from the arrows of Hunayn. The Prophet ﷺ was informed about this and he said, "O Asim, what are two corrupt wolves after they have taken prey that their owner has lost due to the corruption found in it from the love of wealth and honor in his eyes?" This Hadith is famous from Asim, narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . It is the one that Al-Dhahabi remained silent about in his summary.

27.147 [Machine] The Mention of the Virtues of Zaid ibn Thabit, the Scribe of the Prophet ﷺ
[Machine] According to Ibn Ishaq, Zaid bin Thabit bin Ad-Dhahhak bin Lawdhan bin Amr bin Abdi Awf bin Ghanm bin Malik bin An-Najjar was amongst those who witnessed the Battle of the Trench and he was among those who carried the soil alongside the Muslims.
[Machine] "And it is said: Abu Kharajah is Zaid son of Thabit son of Dahhak son of Zaid son of Lawthan son of Amr son of Abd Awf son of Ghanem son of Malik son of Najar al-Ansari, he died in the year forty-five."
[Machine] "And Abu Sa'id Zaid ibn Thabit ibn Aldhahak died in the year forty-five."
[Machine] Zaid ibn Thabit witnessed the Battle of Bu'ath when I was only six years old. This happened five years before the migration of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, arrived in Medina when I was eleven years old. I was brought to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and they said, "This is a young boy from the Khazraj tribe who has memorized sixteen surahs." However, I was not allowed to participate in the Battle of Badr or Uhud. But I was allowed to participate in the Battle of the Trench.

[Machine] "To bury him before sunrise became my opinion while the sun was turning yellow. Then the Ansar came and said, 'He should not be buried except during daylight so that people can gather for him.' Marwan heard the voices and came walking until he entered upon me. He said, 'It is my determination that he should not be buried until morning.' When we became morning, we washed him three times: the first with water, the second with water and sidr, and the third with water and camphor. And we shrouded him in three garments, one of which was a white cloth that Muawiya had sent for him. We prayed over him after sunrise. Marwan ibn al-Hakam prayed over him and Marwan sent for Jazur, and it was slaughtered, and the people and the women were fed, and they cried three times."

[Machine] There was a Sahabi called Thabit ibn Ubaid who asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "Do you speak Syriac?" I said, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Learn it, for it brings us books." So, within seventeen days, I learned it. Al-A'mash said, "Books used to come to him and no one could read them except those who trusted him." This Hadith is considered Sahih if it is proven that Thabit ibn Ubaid heard it from Zaid ibn Thabit without any interruption.
[Machine] "I attended the funeral of Zaid ibn Thabit, and when he was buried in his grave." And he mentioned the hadith.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The most merciful among my Ummah (nation) towards my Ummah is Abu Bakr, and the strongest of them in the matter of Allah is Umar, and the most modest among them is Uthman, and the most knowledgeable about the Book of Allah is Ubayy bin Ka'b, and the most qualified to distinguish between lawful and unlawful matters is Mu'adh, except that every Ummah has a trustworthy person, and the trustworthy person of this Ummah is Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah." This is an authentic chain, according to the conditions of the two Sheikhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not exclude it using this version. They only agreed on mentioning Abu Ubaidah in the chain, and I have mentioned its reason in the book of Al-Talkhis according to the conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
[Machine] He turned to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and said, "This is how we treat our elders and our scholars." The narration is authentic according to the conditions of Imam Muslim, but he did not include it. It is part of the virtues of Zaid bin Thabit that I began with a hadith about collecting the Quran because he has many virtues. However, the two sheikhs (Imam Muslim and Imam Bukhari) agreed not to include it, so I left it. Al-Dhahabi did not mention it in his summary.

[Machine] "While I was standing in line on the day of Badr, I looked to my right and left and saw two young boys from the Ansar. Their teeth were new, and I wished to be among them, so one of them nudged me and said, 'Do you know Abu Jahl?' I replied, 'Yes, and what do you need him for, O son of my cousin?' He said, 'I have been informed that he insults the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, if I see him, he will not leave my sight until he dies.' I was amazed by this, so the other one also nudged me and said the same thing. Before I could respond, I saw Abu Jahl moving among the people, so I told them, 'Behold, this is your companion whom you are asking about.' They immediately drew their swords and struck him until they killed him. Then they went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him. He asked, 'Which one of you killed him?' Each of them said, 'I killed him.' He then asked, 'Did you both wipe your swords?' They replied, 'No.' So he looked at their swords and said, 'Both of you killed him, and the spoils have been rightfully decided for Mu'adh ibn 'Amr ibn Al-Jamuh.'" (This hadith has been summarized by Adh-Dhahabi.)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said on the day of Badr, "Rise to a paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth." Umayr ibn al-Hamam al-Ansari said, "O Messenger of Allah, a paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth, filled with ripe dates! By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I must be one of its people." The Prophet replied, "Indeed, you are one of its people." Umayr then took out some dates and began to eat them, saying, "I will not die until I have eaten my dates. Indeed, they are a long-lasting sustenance." He then threw what he had left of the dates and fought until he was killed. This hadith is considered authentic according to the conditions of Sahih Muslim, but it was never narrated by him (Sahih Muslim).

[Machine] I advised the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, on the day of Badr with two suggestions, and he accepted them from me. I accompanied the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, in the Battle of Badr, and the camp was set up behind the water. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you do this based on divine inspiration or your own opinion?" He replied, "Based on my own opinion, O beloved one." I said, "In my opinion, you should place the water behind you, so if you are forced to retreat, you can retreat towards it." He accepted my suggestion. This hadith is considered weak in its chain of narrators.
