27. Book of the Companions (10/53)
[Machine] As for the two sheikhs, they did not mention anything beyond the virtues. We have started in the first mention of the companion by discussing his lineage and death, then we mentioned what is valid about their conditions from their virtues that they did not mention. So I did not forget to mention Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi and his peers in knowledge.
[Machine] "I found in my father's book, written in his own handwriting, that Saad bin Ibrahim bin Saad and Ya'qub bin Ibrahim said that my father narrated to me from Salih who narrated from Ibn Shihab who narrated from Urwah who said: Aisha said to Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , 'Shall I not give you good news? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: The noblest ladies of the people of Paradise are four: Maryam, the daughter of Imran; Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah; Khadijah, the daughter of Khuwaylid; and Asiyah, wife of Fir'aun (Pharaoh), on the condition mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim.'"
"I did not envy any woman as I envied Khadijah - and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not marry me except after she had died - that was because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of Qasab, without clamoring nor discomforts in it." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3876)
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ did not marry anyone else while Khadijah was alive." Aisha said, "I have never seen anyone more jealous of his wives than me over Khadijah, because of how often he would mention her."
[Machine] Jibril (Gabriel), peace be upon him, came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, while Khadijah was with him. He said, "Indeed, Allah sends His greetings to Khadijah." She replied, "Indeed, Allah Himself is the source of peace, and upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah."
27.27 [Machine] The mention of the virtues of Asad ibn Zurara ibn 'Udas ibn 'Ubayd ibn Tha'laba ibn Ghanim ibn Malik ibn Al-Najjar.
[Machine] As'ad ibn Zurarah died in the month of Shawwal, nine months after the Hijrah. On that day, the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was being built, and this was before the Battle of Badr. The Banu Najjar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him that their leader had died, and they asked him to appoint a new leader for them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I am your leader." The Goldsmith remained silent about the incident in his summary.
[Machine] He informed me that he said, "I was the leader after my father lost his sight. He could not hear the call to prayer on Fridays except that he said, 'May the mercy of Allah be upon As'ad ibn Zurara.' So I said after a while, 'If I ask my father what his situation is when he hears the call to prayer, he says, 'May the mercy of Allah be upon As'ad ibn Zurara.' So I said, 'Oh father, I am amazed by your prayer upon Abu Umamah every time you hear the call to prayer on Fridays.' He said, 'Oh my son, he was the first to gather us for Friday prayer in Madinah after the defeat of the Hawazim tribe of Bani Bayadah in the area known as Al-Khadimah.' I asked, 'And how many of you were there that day?' He said, 'Forty men.' Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summarized version."

"The Prophet ﷺ cauterized As'ad bin Zurarah for Shawkah." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2050)
[Machine] Zainab bint Nubayt said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ adorned his mother and his aunt." Their father was Abu Umamah As'ad ibn Zurarah, and he entrusted them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who adorned them with bracelets made of pure gold with pearls. Zainab said, "And I have some of the jewelry." The chain of narration is authentic, and it has not been reported in Sahih Bukhari.
27.28 [Machine] From the merits of Ubaydah ibn Al-Harith ibn Abdul-Muttalib
[Machine] "The first brigade established by the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was led by Hamza ibn Abdul-Muttalib, then the brigade of Ubaydah ibn al-Harith ibn Abdul-Muttalib was established, to approach Rabigh between al-Juhfah and Qadeed."
[Machine] And that 'Utba ibn Rabi'ah killed 'Ubaidah ibn al-Harith in a duel. 'Utba struck him on his leg and cut it off. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ carried him and he died from yellow fever during his return journey from Badr. He buried him there.
[Machine] Utbah and Ubaydah had a disagreement, each one of them struck the other twice. Both of them sought the help of their companions, and Hamzah and Ali supported Utbah and killed Ubaydah. They then carried Ubaydah, whose leg had been severed and his brain was leaking, to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . When they brought Ubaydah to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he asked him, "Aren't you a witness, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Yes." Ubaydah then said, "If Abu Talib were alive, he would know that we are more deserving of what he said about us in Al-Bahr Al-Thuyl. We handed him over until he was killed in his vicinity, and we were left helpless regarding our children and properties." Adh-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summarization.

27.29 [Machine] The Mention of the Virtues of Umair ibn Abi Waqqas, Brother of Sa'd, Who was Martyred on the Day of Badr
[Machine] "An offer was presented to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to join the army of Badr, and Umayr ibn Abi Waqqaṣ refused. Umayr then wept, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted him permission. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then tied the scabbard of his sword to Umayr."
27.30 [Machine] From the virtues of Saad ibn Khaythama ibn al-Harith ibn Malik ibn Kaab, who was a member of the Banu Adi tribe and one of the twelve distinguished people. He was killed by Amr ibn Abd Wadd on the day of Badr.
[Machine] "We are the smallest with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, me and Sa'd bin Khaythama."
[Machine] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to Badr, Sa'd ibn Khaythama and his father wanted to go out with him. They mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ , so he ordered one of them to go out. They both competed for it. Khaythama ibn Al-Harith said to his son Sa'd, 'One of us must stay back, so you should stay with your wives.' Sa'd replied, 'If it were not for Paradise, I would give preference to you, as I hope for martyrdom for the sake of Allah's pleasure.' So they competed, and Sa'd went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Badr, where he was killed by Amr ibn Abd Wadd." (This narration is weak in its chain of transmission)
27.31 [Machine] The mention of the virtues of Uthman bin Mazh'un bin Habib bin Wahb bin Hudhaifah "His kunya is Abu al-Sa'ib Hajar al-Hijratayn and he witnessed the Battle of Badr and died after Badr by a few months
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, used to visit a cemetery where his companions were buried. He would explore the outskirts of the city of Medina and its surroundings, then he would say, "I have been instructed about this place," referring to Al-Baqi cemetery, which used to be called Al-Khabkhaba. The most prominent plant there was the Gharkad tree. The first person to be buried there was Uthman ibn Madh'un. The Prophet placed a stone at his head and said, "This is the grave where we will be resurrected." When a migrant companion died after him, the Prophet was asked, "O Messenger of Allah, where shall we bury him?" He would answer, "Beside the grave of Uthman ibn Madh'un."
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissed Uthman ibn Mazh'un after his death."
[Machine] His wife said to him, "Congratulations to you, O Uthman bin Mazh'un, for Paradise." The Messenger of Allah looked at her and said, "What makes you say that?" She replied, "O Messenger of Allah, your horseman and companion." The Messenger of Allah said, "I am the Messenger of Allah, and I do not know what will be done with me." The people felt pity for Uthman. When Zainab bint the Messenger of Allah died, the Messenger of Allah said, "Join her with our virtuous predecessors, Uthman bin Mazh'un." The women cried, so Umar began striking them with his whip. The Messenger of Allah took his hand and said, "Wait, O Umar."
27.32 [Machine] The mention of the merits of Ja'dah ibn Hubayrah al-Makhzumi
[Machine] "Mus'ab, the one who says [The Long Sea], and who is this one who refuses me in marriage, my paternal uncle and my maternal uncle? It is Ali, the one with dew and thick hair. Mu'awiyah said: Mus'ab died while still a polytheist in Najran. As for Ja'dah, he indeed married the daughter of his paternal uncle, Umm Al-Hasan bint Ali, and she gave birth to Abdullah bin Ja'dah bin Hubayrah. It is said that this child was born in Khurasan [The Simple Sea]. If it were not for Ibn Ja'dah, Khurasan and Quhuz would not have been conquered until the blowing of the trumpets. Mus'ab said, 'Ali entrusted Khurasan to Ja'dah bin Hubayrah Al-Makhzumi and he went to Iraq, then he performed Hajj and passed away in Al-Madinah.' Mus'ab narrates a hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the authenticity of which has been mentioned."

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saying, "The best of people are my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then there will come a people who will be deceitful."
[Machine] I said to Ali, "O uncle, did you kill Uthman?" He said, "No, by Allah, I did not kill him nor did I order it, but I was overpowered." Ja'dah bin Hubairah passed away after the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and Ali only suspected the death of his father, Hubairah bin Abi Hubairah.

[Machine] Abu Jahl confronted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at As-Safa. He insulted him and said things that were detestable to his religion and demeaning towards him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not respond to him. Abdullah bin Judda'an At-Taymi's wife witnessed this incident from her house, which was located above As-Safa. Afterward, Abu Jahl went to the gathering of the Quraysh at the Kaaba and sat with them. Hamza bin Abdul-Muttalib, with his bow on his shoulder, returned from hunting and normally when he returned in this manner, he would not pass by the gathering of the Quraysh without expressing his strength. On this day, he was still a pagan. The lady who witnessed the incident approached him and informed him about what had transpired between Abu Jahl and Muhammad, and how Abu Jahl had insulted and abused him. Then, she told him that Muhammad had not responded to him. Thus, Hamza became angry for the sake of the honor of Allah's Messenger ﷺ . He hurried, looking for Abu Jahl, in order to avenge the harm that had befallen Allah's Messenger ﷺ . When he entered the Masjid, he saw Abu Jahl sitting among people and went towards him. When he reached Abu Jahl, he drew his bow with all his strength and struck Abu Jahl's head with the bow, causing a severe wound. Men from Quraysh's Banu Makhzum tribe stood to support Abu Jahl, but they did not find Hamza, as he rushed out of the Masjid. He did not stop to speak to anyone as he normally did. He went straight towards the Kaaba to perform Tawaf (circumambulation) while giving Abu Jahl the opportunity to take revenge, had he wanted to. When he entered the Masjid, he saw Abu Jahl sitting among people and went towards him. He went straight towards the Kaaba to perform Tawaf (circumambulation) while giving Abu Jahl the opportunity to take revenge, had he wanted to. But Abu Jahl restrained himself, not retaliating for the harm he had received. He did not think that Hamza's action was the cause of his forgiveness, but rather his intention was to fulfill the command of Allah. After this incident, Hamza entered his house, and Satan came to him saying, "You are the chief of the Quraysh! You have followed this new religion and abandoned the religion of your ancestors. Death is better for you than what you have done." Hamza was affected by this whisper. He went to Hamza with a doubt in his heart, unsure of the way out of the situation he found himself in. He went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the next morning and said, "O my nephew! I find myself in a situation and I do not know how to find a way out. I have placed myself in a situation where I cannot retreat or advance. Tell me, is it right for me to continue in the path I have chosen, or should I choose another path?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advised him, reminded him, admonished him, and gave him glad tidings. As a result, faith entered Hamza's heart, as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said. Hamza then said, "I bear witness that you are truthful in your testimony, the one who confirms truth and identifies falsehood. Show me, O my nephew, the path to follow, and by Allah, there is nothing I would love more than to have a reputation that would outshine the sun. And I am now embracing my original religion." So it was, that Hamza was one of those whom Allah honored and helped through the religion.

Join me today and say that Utbah ibn Rabee'ah is a coward. And you know that I am not one of your cowards.' Abu Jahl heard this and said, 'You say this if not for yourself.' Then Utbah and his brother Shaybah and his son Walid appeared and said, 'Who will fight us?' So, young men from the Ansar went out. Will you not enter, O Messenger of Allah, with my father and mother?" He said, "Do you have something?" She said, "Yes." So he entered and she brought him a bowl of meat, and she said, "This is from my father and mother, congratulations to you and blessings upon you. I came here while desiring to come to you and congratulate you. Abu Umamah informed me that you have been given a river in Paradise called Al-Kawthar, and its vessels are more numerous than the stars of the sky. And the thing that I like the most about it is that it will be frequented by your people." This is a correct narration with a sound chain of narration, and it has not been repeated.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, passed by Hamzah on the day of Uhud, and he was wounded and disfigured. He said, "If it weren't for Safiyyah, I would have left him until Allah resurrects him from the bellies of birds and beasts." So he shrouded him in a piece of cloth. This hadith is authentic according to the conditions of Imam Muslim, and he did not include it in his book.

[Machine] A boy was born to one of us, so they asked, "What should we name him?" The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ replied, "Name him after the most beloved names to me, Hamza ibn Abdul-Muttalib." This hadith has a sound chain of narration, but it was not narrated by Ya'qub ibn Kasb, who is considered weak.

The Messenger of Allah replied, 'Name him Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, for he is the most beloved person to me.'" This unknown narrator has shortened the narration about Ibn Uyaynah, and the statement in it is from Ya'qub ibn Humaid. Abu Ahmad al-Hafiz used to argue with me that al-Bukhari has narrated from him in his authentic collection, but I refused to accept it, and al-Dhahabi excluded it from the summary due to its weakness.

[Machine] Regarding 'Urwah's statement about the naming of those who witnessed the Battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he mentioned that Hamzah ibn 'Abdul-Muttalib was killed on the day of Uhud when he was fifty-four years old. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.

[Machine] On the day of Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ looked at Hamzah, who had been killed and mutilated, and saw a sight that he had never seen before, which caused great pain and distress to his heart. He said, "May the mercy of Allah be upon you. You were a means of connection among relatives and a means of good deeds. If it weren't for the grief that I feel for you after your departure, I would have been pleased to leave you until various mouths spread reports about you." Then, while standing in his place, he swore, "By Allah, I will surely avenge seventy of them in your place." The Qur'an was revealed to him while he was standing in his place and did not move until the end of the verse: "And if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient." [Surah An-Nahl, 126] Then the Prophet ﷺ removed his hand from his right side and refrained from punishing those he had intended to.

[Machine] When Hamza was killed, Safiyyah came looking for him, not knowing what had happened. She met Ali and Zubayr, and Ali said to Zubayr, "Tell your mother." Zubayr replied, "You tell your aunt." She asked, "What happened to Hamza?" They both said they did not know. She then went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I am afraid for her mind." He placed his hand on her chest and prayed for her. She regained consciousness and cried. Then the Prophet ﷺ came and stood by her, and she saw Hamza being carried in a stretcher. He said, "If it were not for the grief of the women, I would have left him until birds and wild animals took from him." Then he ordered for the dead to be prayed upon. He performed the funeral prayer on nine of them, with seven takbirs for each, and then Hamza was left. Then nine more were brought and he prayed upon them with seven takbirs for each, and again Hamza was left. Then another nine were brought and he prayed upon them with seven takbirs for each, until he had finished with them. Abu Bakr ibn 'Ayyash narrated this from Yazid, and I said they are not reliable narrators.

When he saw his face, he wept, and when he saw what had been done to him, he sobbed. Then he said, 'Shouldn't he be shrouded?'
