27. Book of the Companions (2/53)
[Machine] As for the two sheikhs, they did not mention anything beyond the virtues. We have started in the first mention of the companion by discussing his lineage and death, then we mentioned what is valid about their conditions from their virtues that they did not mention. So I did not forget to mention Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi and his peers in knowledge.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Follow those after me, Abu Bakr and Umar, and seek guidance from the teachings of Ammar. And when Ibn Umm Abd speaks to you, believe him."
[Machine] The messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Follow the footsteps of those who come after me; Abu Bakr and Umar."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Follow in the footsteps of those who came after me, namely Abu Bakr and Umar, and seek guidance from the teachings of Ammar. Hold onto the covenant of Ibn Umme Abd. This is a hadith for the sake of narrating the virtues of the two honorable companions, and this chain of narration has been established from Ath-Thawri and Mas'ar Yahya al-Himmani. It has also been established from Mas'ar and Wakie', as well as Hafs ibn Umar al-Ayli. Then, [this hadith] was summarized in its narration from Ibn Uyaynah al-Humaidi and others. This chain of narration was established from Ibn Uyaynah to Ishaq bin Isa bin At-Tabbaa'. Thus, the authenticity of this hadith has been confirmed even though they did not mention it specifically, and we have found a supporting witness for it through a reliable chain of narration from Abdullah ibn Mas'ood."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "Follow the path of those who come after me, Abu Bakr and Umar, and seek guidance from the teachings of Ammar, and hold fast to the covenant of Ibn Masood."
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, the preachers of the Ansar (the residents of Madinah) stood up. One of them said, "O migrants! Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to appoint a companion from among you along with a companion from amongst us, so we would see that in this matter, two men should be appointed, one from among you and the other from among us." The preachers of the Ansar continued to discuss this matter until Zaid bin Thabit stood up and said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was one of the migrants, and the Imam (leader) should also be from the migrants. As for us, we are his supporters, just as we were the supporters of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Abu Bakr then stood up and said, "May Allah reward you all, O people of Ansar, and may He make your words firm." Then he said, "If you had done otherwise, we would not have accepted your allegiance." Zaid bin Thabit then took Abu Bakr's hand and said, "This is your companion, so pledge your allegiance to him." They all pledged their allegiance to Abu Bakr and then left. When Abu Bakr sat on the pulpit, he looked at the faces of the people and did not see Ali. He asked about him, and some people from the Ansar brought Ali to him. Abu Bakr said, "O cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , did you intend to cause a fitnah (discord) among the Muslims?" Ali replied, "There should not be any blame on you, O successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He then pledged his allegiance to him. Then Abu Bakr did not see Zubair ibn Al-Awam, so he asked about him until they brought him. Abu Bakr said, "O cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companion, did you also intend to cause a fitnah among the Muslims?" Zubair replied, "There should not be any blame on you, O successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He then pledged his allegiance to him.
[Machine] When the Prophet ﷺ was taken on the Night Journey to Al-Aqsa Mosque, people started talking about it. Some people who used to believe in him and trust him turned away, while men from the polytheists went to Abu Bakr and asked him, "Does your companion claim that he was taken on a journey to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa last night?" Abu Bakr asked them, "Did he say that?" They replied, "Yes." Abu Bakr then said, "If he indeed said that, then he has spoken the truth." They asked him, "Do you believe him when he claims that he went to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa and came back before morning?" Abu Bakr answered, "Yes, I believe him in something even more miraculous than that. I believe him in the news of the heavens in the early morning or evening. That is why he is called Abu Bakr As-Siddiq."
[Machine] "It became a harm between them until they threw stones at each other, then the Prophet ﷺ came to them and said, 'O Abu Bakr, if the prayer is established, go ahead and lead the people in prayer.' He replied, 'Yes.'"
[Machine] The sons of Al-Mustaliq sent me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and they said, "Ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to whom should we give our charity after you?" So I went to him and asked him, and he said, "To Abu Bakr." So I went to them and informed them, and they said, "Go back to him and ask him, if Abu Bakr is not available, then to whom?" So I went to him and asked him, and he said, "To Umar." So I went to them and informed them, and they said, "Go back to him and ask him, if Umar is not available, then to whom?" So I went to him and asked him, and he said, "To Uthman." So I went to them and informed them, and they said, "Go back to him and ask him, if Uthman is not available, then to whom?" So I went to him and asked him, and he said, "If it happens with Uthman, then it will be a great loss for you indeed, throughout your lifetime."
[Machine] I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said to Hassan bin Thabit, "Did you say anything about Abu Bakr?" He replied, "Yes." He said, "Say it so I can hear." He said, "I said, 'The second of two in the cave of Mawnaif, and the enemy surrounded them when they ascended the mountain. And the love of the Messenger of Allah for Abu Bakr, the creation of Allah, was known to them all, and no one equaled him in that.'" (Al-Bahr Al-Basit) [Al-Dhahabi omitted it from his summary due to its weakness.]
[Machine] What is the matter with this affair in the least of the Quraysh, in terms of fewness and degradation? Does it mean Abu Bakr? By Allah, if you wish, I will fill it with horses and men against him. Ali said, "You have always opposed Islam and its people, O Abu Sufyan, yet it did not harm you. We found Abu Bakr suitable for it in every way." Its chain of narration is authentic.
[Machine] "We were with the Prophet ﷺ when the delegation of Banu Qays came to him. Some of them spoke in an eloquent manner. The Prophet ﷺ turned to Abu Bakr and said, "O Abu Bakr, did you hear what they said?" He replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, I heard and understood it." He said, "Then respond to them." Abu Bakr responded with an excellent answer, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Abu Bakr, Allah has granted you the greatest contentment." Some people asked, "And what is the greatest contentment, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Allah will manifest Himself to His servants in the Hereafter in general, and He will manifest Himself to Abu Bakr in particular.""
[Machine] "If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had appointed a successor, he would have chosen Abu Bakr and Umar."

[Machine] When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, the Muhajirun and the Ansar gathered at the courtyard of Banu Sa'idah to pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr. I went to Umm Salamah and told her, "The people have pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about summarizing it.

[Machine] Mus'ab ibn Abdullah al-Zubayri narrated to me, he said: "Umar ibn Al-Khattab ibn Nufail ibn Abdul-Uzza ibn Riayah ibn Abdullah ibn Qurt ibn Razzah ibn Adi ibn Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib ibn Fhir, they all said: His mother was Hantamah bint Hashim ibn Al-Mughirah ibn Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Makhzum. Omar then asked who was the first person to write among the Amir al-Mu'minin (commander of the faithful)? Abu Bakr ibn Sulaiman said, "Ash-Shifa' informed me that Omar ibn Al-Khattab wrote a letter to the governor of Iraq instructing him to send two men to ask about Iraq and its people. The governor of Iraq sent Labid ibn Rabiah and Adi ibn Hatim. when they arrived in Madinah, they parked their camels in the mosque courtyard and entered the mosque. His name is the Amir and we are the believers.' Amr al-Mu'minin then stood up, entered and said the salaam to Omar ibn Al-Khattab, 'Peace be upon you, O Amir al-Mu'minin.' Omar said, 'What do you think of this name, O son of Al-Aas? My Lord knows. You need to take back what you just said.' They replied, 'Indeed, Labid ibn Rabiah and Adi ibn Hatim have arrived. They parked their camels in the mosque courtyard and have come to speak with you.' So, the book began from that moment on." Ash-Shifa' is the paternal aunt of Abu Bakr ibn Sulaiman.

When the sharecropper saw Umar, he prostrated and Umar said, "What is this prostration?" The sharecropper replied, "This is how we treat kings." Umar said, "Prostrate to your Lord who created you." The sharecropper then said, "O Amir al-Mu'minin, I have prepared food for you, so come to me." Umar asked, "Do you have any idols or pictures of non-Arabs in your house?" The sharecropper said, "Yes." Umar said, "We have no need for anything in your house, but go and send us a loaf of bread without adding anything to it." He went and sent the bread. Umar ate from it and then said to his servant, "Do you have any of that wine (nabidh)?" The servant said, "Yes." Umar said, "Send it to us." He brought it and poured it into a container, then smelled it and found it to have a foul smell. He poured water onto it and smelled it again but found it to have a foul smell. He repeated this process three times, then drank it. After drinking, Umar said, "If there is anything harmful in your drink, do this with it (referring to pouring water onto it)." Muslim al-A'war left it.

If you had brought me the head of the wicked one, I would have preferred that.'" Umar stood up, then the Prophet ﷺ called him when he was far away and said, "Come, O Umar, where did you intend to go?" He said, "I intended to bring you the head of the wicked one." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Sit down until I inform you about the sufficiency of the Lord from the prayer of Abu Jahl al-Laithi. Indeed, Allah has angels in the sky of this world who are in constant humility, not lifting their heads until the Hour is established. When the Hour is established, they lift their heads and say, 'Our Lord, we have not worshiped You as You deserve to be worshiped.' 'Umar bin Al-Khattab asked, "What do they say, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "As for the inhabitants of the lower heaven, they say, 'Glory be to the King, the Sovereign,' and as for the inhabitants of the second heaven, they say, 'Glory be to the Ever-Living, who never dies.' Say it, O Umar, in your prayer." 'Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, what about the one you taught me and commanded me to say in my prayer?" He said, "Say it once and say it at another time." The one he commanded me to say was, "I seek refuge in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath, and I seek refuge in You from You, the majesty of Your face."
