12. Ḥajj and ʿUmrah (3/34)
[Machine] In His saying "So whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein" [Al-Baqarah 197], He said, "Oh people,"
[Machine] Abdullah is the son of Masood. The obligatory act of Hajj is Ihram.
[Machine] I heard Abdullah ibn Zubair say that the obligation of Hajj is to assume the state of Ihram.
12.22 [Machine] Not allowed to perform Hajj outside the designated months of Hajj
Muhammad bin Ja'far narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Amr bin Murrah who said: "I asked Abu Ubaidah bin Abdullah: 'Did you remember anything from Abdullah?' He said, 'No'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 624)
لَا
[Machine] The translation of the passage is: "It is not prohibited to perform Hajj except during the months of Hajj. Indeed, it is a Sunnah of Hajj to perform the Ihram for Hajj during the months of Hajj."
[Machine] Ali Abu Al-Qasim is a supervisor who is a servant of Abdullah bin Al-Harith bin Nawfal.
[Machine] "Allah, the Exalted said, 'Hajj (pilgrimage) is (during) the well-known months' [Quran 2:197], so that Hajj should not be performed in other months."
[Machine] Whoever refrains from performing Hajj during months other than the designated Hajj months, it will be considered as a lesser pilgrimage (Umrah).
12.23 [Machine] Who performed multiple Umrahs in a year?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Performing 'Umrah after 'Umrah will be an expiation for the sins committed between them, and the accepted Hajj has no reward except Paradise."
[Machine] A deadline approached for someone to perform the Umrah pilgrimage, until she delayed it. When she finally went, the Prophet ﷺ visited her and found her crying. He asked her what made her cry, and she replied that she had reached the age of menstruation without performing the rituals of Umrah and not having circumambulated the Kaaba, while everyone else had gone for Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ told her that this was a matter ordained by Allah for the daughters of Adam, so she should perform ablution and commence the rituals of Hajj. She did as he instructed, and when she purified herself, she circumambulated the Kaaba, Safa, and Marwa. Then the Prophet ﷺ told her that she had completed both her Hajj and Umrah. However, she still felt in her heart that she had not circumambulated the Kaaba before she performed Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ instructed her to go back with "Abd al-Rahman and perform the rituals again, this time using all the luxuries and comforts available on the Night of Husbands.
[Machine] She used to perform the pilgrimage at the end of Dhu al-Hijjah from Juhfah, and she used to perform the pilgrimage in Rajab from Madinah, and she would enter ihram from Dhu al-Hulayfah.
[Machine] She performed Umrah three times in one year. I asked, "Did anyone criticize her for that?" He replied, "Glory be to Allah, she is the mother of the believers." Sa'dan said in his narration, "Then I remained silent and became upset." Yahya ibn Al-Rabi'a said, "Sufyan says, 'Who dares to criticize the mother of the believers?'"
[Machine] Abdullah bin Umar performed Umrah for two years during the reign of Ibn Zubair, every year.
[Machine] We were with Anas ibn Malik in Makkah, and whenever he washed his head, he would go out and perform Umrah.
12.24 [Machine] Umrah in the Months of Hajj
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ resided with a group of his relatives in the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, and no verse of the Qur'an was revealed negating it, based on the opinion of a man who wished to see it."
By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not make Aisha perform umrah during Dhul-Hijjah but to discontinue the practice of the idolaters (in Arabia before Islam), for this clan of Quraysh and those who followed them used to say: When the fur of the camel abounds, and the wounds on the back of the camels are recovered and the month of Safar begins, umrah becomes lawful for one who performs umrah. They considered performing umrah unlawful till the months of Dhul-Hijjah and al-Muharram passed away. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1987)
[Machine] During the months of Hajj, from the beginning of the year, they say that when the tail is healed and the trace is erased, and the yellow (leaves) fall, the Umrah is allowed for those who perform it. They used to call the month of Muharram "Safar". So the Prophet and his companions arrived early in the morning of the fourth day to perform Hajj. The Prophet commanded them to make it an Umrah, and this astonished them. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the solution?" He said, "The solution is everything," meaning that they are allowed to do everything.
[Machine] To perform umrah instead of the Hajj pilgrimage is only allowed for the travelers from the companions of Muhammad ﷺ specifically.
We proceeded with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage. There were those amongst us who had put on Ihram for Umra, and those who had put on Ihram both for Hajj and" Umra, and those amongst us who had put on Ihram for Hajj (only), while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had put on Ihram for Hajj (only). He who put on Ihram for Umra put it off (after performing Umra), and he who had put on Ihram for Hajj or for both Hajj and 'Umra did not put it off before the day of sacrifice (10th of Dhu'l-Hijja). (Using translation from Muslim 1211h)

[Machine] And Abdullah ibn Umar said, "The Prophet ﷺ performed 'Umrah before Hajj."
[Machine] Abu al-Abbas, who is al-Asamm, narrated from Rabee'ah, who narrated from al-Shafi'i, who narrated from Malik, from Sadakah ibn Yasār, from Ibn 'Umar, that he said: "I said, 'I would rather perform 'Umrah before Hajj and be given a gift than perform 'Umrah after Hajj in Dhu al-Hijjah.'"

Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed four ʿUmras, all in the month of Dhul-Qa'da, except the one which he performed with his Hajj (i.e. in Dhul-Hijja). He performed one ʿUmra from Al-Hudaibiya in Dhul- Qa'da, another ʿUmra in the following year in Dhul Qa'da a third from Al-Jirana where he distributed the war booty of Hunain, in Dhul Qa'da, and the fourth ʿUmra he performed was with his Hajj. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4148)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed two umrahs: one umrah in Dhul-Qa'dah, and the other in Shawwal. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1991)

12.25 [Machine] Umrah in Ramadan
I heard Ibn ʿAbbas saying, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked an Ansari woman (Ibn ʿAbbas named her but ʿAta' forgot her name), 'What prevented you from performing Hajj with us?' She replied, 'We have a camel and the father of so-and-so and his son (i.e. her husband and her son) rode it and left one camel for us to use for irrigation.' He said (to her), 'Perform ʿUmra when Ramadan comes, for ʿUmra in Ramadan is equal to Hajj (in reward),' or said something similar." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1782)

[Machine] I was with the Prophet ﷺ, and a woman came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, in which months should I perform Umrah?" He replied, "In Ramadan, for performing Umrah in Ramadan is equal to performing Hajj." This is the wording of the narration of Abu Abdullah (Imam Bukhari) and it is also narrated by Ibn Uyaynah from Dawud al-Awdi, and in another narration by Abdul Khalq bin Khunbash, and in the narration of Bayan from al-Sha'bi from Wahb bin Khunbash. Wahb bin Khunbash also said, "This is the most authentic narration."

12.26 [Machine] Introduction of Hajj to Umrah
[Machine] In the farewell pilgrimage, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed an Umrah, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said in the farewell pilgrimage: "Whoever has brought a sacrificial animal, let him perform the Hajj with the Umrah. Then, it is not permissible for him to enter a state of consecration until he has completed both." She said, "I arrived in Mecca while I was menstruating and I did not perform Tawaf around the Kaaba or between Safa and Marwa. So, I complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, and he said, 'Shave your head, disinfect yourself, and perform the Hajj while abandoning the Umrah.' She said, 'So I did that. When we completed the Hajj, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me with Abdur Rahman ibn Abu Bakr to Tan`eem, and I performed Umrah there.' He said, 'This is the place of your Umrah.' She said, 'Those who performed the Umrah with the Kaaba and between Safa and Marwa completed their Tawaf and then performed another Tawaf after returning from Mina for Hajj. As for those who combined Hajj and Umrah, they only performed one Tawaf.'"

Jabir said “We went out along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raising our voices in talbiyah for Hakk alone(Ifrad) while A’ishah raised her voice in talbiyah for an ‘Umrah. When she reached Sarif, she menstruated. When we came to (Makkah) we circumambulated the Ka’bah and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then commanded us that those who had not brought sacrificial animals withthem should put off their ihram (after ‘Umrah). We asked “Which acts are lawful(and which not)? He replied All acts are lawful (that are permissible usually). We had therefore intercourse with our wives, used perfumes, put on our clothes. There remained only four days to perform Hajj at ‘Arafah. We then raised our voice in talbiyah (wearing Ihram for Hajj) on the eighth of Dhu al Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon A’ishah and found her weeping. He said What is the matter with you? My problem is that I have menstruated, while the people have put on their ihram but I have not done so, nor did I go round the House(the Ka’bah). Now the people are proceeding for Hajj. He said This is a thing destined by Allah to the daughters of Adam. Take a bath, then raise your voice in talbiyah for Hajj(i.e, wear ihram for Hajj). She took a abtah and performed all the rites of the Hajj(lit. she stayed at all those places where the pilgrims stay). When she was purified, she circumambulated the House (the Ka’bah), and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah. He (the Prophet) said “Now you have performed both your Hajj and your ‘Umrah. She said Messenger of Allah, I have some misgiving in my mind that I did not go round the Ka’bah when I performed Hajj (in the beginning). He said ‘Abd al Rahman (her brother), take her and have her perform ‘Umrah from Al Tan’im. This happened on the night of Al Hasbah(i.e., the fourteenth of Dhu Al Hijjah). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1785)

[Machine] We built the house just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had built it. Then he left and performed Umrah and continued until he reached the open plain. He turned to his companions and said, "I have only commanded them to witness that I have obligated Hajj along with Umrah." He continued until he reached the Kaaba, circled it, and then walked between Safa and Marwa seven times without adding anything more. He saw that this fulfilled his duty and he completed his Umrah. This is mentioned in Sahihayn from the hadith of Malik, narrated by Ubaidullah bin Umar and others from Nafi'. They added that it was not permissible for anyone to do so until they had performed Hajj with it, and his statement "he did not add to it" means that he only performed one circuit between Safa and Marwa. If he had performed Hajj and then intended to perform Umrah, Imam Ash-Shafi`i, may Allah have mercy on him, said, "I have encountered and memorized more than him. He says, 'That is not for him.' It has also been narrated from some of the Tabi'in, and I do not know if anything has been proven from any of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ regarding this matter. It has been narrated from Ali, but it is not confirmed. His intention was only for what he did.

[Machine] I performed Hajj and met Ali. I told him that I performed Hajj and I am able to add Umrah to it. He said, "No, if you performed Umrah and then you want to add Hajj to it, you can do so. But if you start with Hajj, do not add Umrah to it." I asked him, "What should I do if I want to do that?" He said, "Pour some water on yourself as a form of treatment, then perform both rites together. You must perform two Tawaf for both."
[Machine] He (the narrator) met Ali who had performed the Hajj and Umrah. So he (the narrator) asked Ali, "Did you perform both of them together?" Ali replied, "That is only if you had started by making intentions for them, then you performed ablution, and then you performed both of them. Then you performed two circuits of Tawaf for your Hajj and two circuits of Tawaf for your Umrah. After that, nothing became permissible for you until the day of sacrifice." So the Thawri narrated this from Mansoor, who narrated it from Ibrahim, who narrated it from Malik ibn al-Harith or from Malik himself. He (the narrator) said, "No, that is not the case. If you started with Umrah, then do this." Ali mentioned it in its meaning. Mansoor had doubts about hearing it from Malik himself or from Ibrahim.

12.27 [Machine] Who said that Umrah is voluntary?
[Machine] It was reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Hajj is a form of jihad, and Umrah is a voluntary act of worship." Al-Shafi'i said in the book (of jurisprudence): So I said to him (someone), "Do you mean some of the people of the east (meaning those who reside in the east)? Are you confirming this statement from the Prophet ﷺ ?" He replied, "No, it is not confirmed." The sheikh said: And it has been narrated from the hadith of Shu'bah (narrator) from Mu'awiyah ibn Ishaq from Abu Salih from Abu Hurairah connected (narrated in a continuous chain). However, the path (of narrators) through Shu'bah is weak. Muhammad ibn Al-Fadl ibn Atiyyah narrated it from Salim Al-Aftas from Ibn Jubair from Ibn Abbas, and this (narration) is (considered) abandoned.
[Machine] He (the Prophet ﷺ) said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, is 'Umrah obligatory and its (reward) like that of Hajj?" He said, "No, but if you perform 'Umrah, it is better for you." This was narrated by 'Ubaidullah bin Al-Mughirah, who reported it from Ubaidullah bin 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah. Yahya bin Sufyan and Muhammad bin 'Abdul-Rahim Al-Barki also narrated it from Ibn 'Ufair, who narrated it from Yahya, who narrated it from 'Ubaidullah bin 'Umar. This is an illusion from Al-Baghawi, and he has also been reported by Al-Baghawi from Ja'far bin Musa'ir, who reported it from Ibn 'Ufair and said that Yahya reported it from 'Ubaidullah bin 'Amr.

[Machine] He used to recite "And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah" [Al-Baqarah 196]. He says it is obligatory. And Al-Sha'bi used to recite it as "And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah" [Al-Baqarah 196]. And he says it is voluntary.

[Machine] I said to Ibn Umar, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, a group claims that there is no predestination. Is there anyone among them from us?" He replied, "No." So I said to him, "Then inform them from me that Ibn Umar is innocent in the sight of Allah from all of you, and you are innocent in his sight. I heard Umar ibn Al-Khattab saying, while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man with disheveled hair and clothes that showed he had been traveling approached and did not seek permission to join us, but rather sat in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ just as one of us would sit in prayer. Then he placed his hand on the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ knee and said, 'O Muhammad, what is Islam?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to give the obligatory charity, to perform pilgrimage to the House, to observe fasting during the month of Ramadan.' The man said, 'If I said that, would I be considered a Muslim?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Yes.' The man said, 'You have spoken the truth.' And he mentioned the hadith."

[Machine] He said, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed my father is elderly and is unable to perform Hajj, Umrah, and Tha'nah." He (the Prophet) said, "Perform Hajj on behalf of your father and perform Umrah." Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, Ali ibn Hamshadh informed us, Ahmad ibn Salamah said, "I asked Muslim ibn Hajjaj about this hadith, meaning the hadith of Abu Razin. He said, "I heard Ahmad ibn Hanbal saying, 'I do not know of a more authentic hadith regarding the obligation of Umrah than this one. No one has narrated it more meticulously than Shu'bah.'"

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Hajj and Umrah are two obligatory acts of worship." I was informed by Abu Saad al-Zahid, who informed me that Abu al-Hasan Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Ismail al-Darir narrated to him that Ja'far bin Muhammad al-Firiyabi narrated to him, who narrated from Qutaybah, who narrated from Ibn Lahiah, who mentioned it. And Ibn Lahiah is not considered a reliable source for this narration. And in the narration of Sabi ibn Ma'bad, he said to Umar ibn al-Khattab: "I found Hajj and Umrah written for me and I have performed them." Umar responded: "You have followed the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ ." And this is mentioned if Allah wills, in the chapter regarding Qarin, which refers to the sacrifice of an animal during Hajj and Umrah.

[Machine] Abdullah ibn Umar used to say that there is no person created by Allah except that they must perform the obligatory Hajj and Umrah, if they are able to do so. And whoever does anything extra after that, it is better and voluntary.

[Machine] The passage translates to: "The acts of devotion for Allah, whichever of them you begin with, will not harm you."
