12. Ḥajj and ʿUmrah
"When he went tout the Masjid heading for As-Safa, I heard the Messenger of Allah say: We will start with that with which Allah started.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2969)
when the Messenger of Allah stood on top of As-Safa, he recited the Takbir three times and said: "La ilaha illallah, Wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, yuhyi wa yumitu, wa huwaala kulli shayin qadir (There is none worthy of worship except Allah alone with no partner or associate, His is the dominion and to Him be praise, He gives life and death, and He has power over all things)." He did three times, and supplicated, and did the same a top Al-Marwah. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2972)
when the Messenger of Allah came down from As-Safa he would walk until he reached the bottom of the valley, then he would hasten until he came out of it. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2981)
[Machine] We entered upon Jabir ibn Abdullah and he mentioned the hadith regarding the pilgrimage of the Prophet ﷺ . He said, "Then he exited the door towards Safa, and when he approached Safa, he recited, 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah' [Al-Baqarah 2:158]. He started with what Allah started with, so he began with Safa and climbed it until he saw the Kaaba. Then he glorified and praised Allah, and said, 'There is no deity but Allah alone, without any partners. His is the dominion and to Him is the praise, He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things competent. There is no deity but Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, supported His servant, and defeated the allies alone.' Then he supplicated during that and said the same three times. Then he descended to Marwa, and when his feet touched the sand of the valley, he ran until he reached Marwa. He did the same on Marwa as he did on Safa until he completed the last round on Marwa."
[Machine] And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered and began with the Black Stone, touched it, then circumambulated seven times, and then prayed two units behind the Station. Then he continued until he reached Safa, he ascended it until he could see the House, and he praised Allah and invoked Him.
[Machine] He said, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached until he reached the Black Stone and touched it, then he circled the Kaaba. When he finished his circumambulation, he came to Safa and Marwah and climbed upon it until he could see the Kaaba. He raised his hands, praised Allah, and supplicated with whatever he wished to supplicate for.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to perform the first circumambulation of the Kaaba by walking three times and running four times. And when he would perform the sa'i between Safa and Marwa, he would walk briskly with his stomach held in. So, I asked Nafi', "Did Abdullah used to walk when he reached the Yamani corner?" He said, "No, except if he encountered a crowd at the corner. He would not leave it until he had passed it."
[Machine] If a man among you performs Hajj, let him circumambulate the Ka'bah seven times and pray two units of prayer at the Station (of Ibrahim). Then he should start at Safa and face the Ka'bah and make seven takbirs (reciting: Allahu Akbar) between each two takbirs. He should praise Allah and send salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ and make supplications for himself and do the same at Marwah.
[Machine] And he would make three takbeers and say: There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise, and He is able to do all things. And he would do that seven times. That is twenty-one takbeers and seven talbiyahs. Then he would supplicate and ask Allah. Then he would descend until he reached the bottom of Mas'il, then he would hurry until he appeared from it. Then he would walk until he reached Al-Marwah, and he would climb upon it and do the same as he did upon As-Safa. He would do that seven times until he finished his sa'y.
[Machine] He heard Abdullah bin Umar while he was on Safa calling and saying, "O Allah, You have said: 'Call upon Me, I will respond to you.' [Ghafir: 60] And indeed, You do not fail in Your promise. And I ask You, just as You have guided me to Islam, do not let it be taken away from me until You cause me to die while I am a Muslim."
[Machine] He used to say on Safa: O Allah, protect us with Your religion, obedience to You, obedience to Your Messenger, and keep us away from Your limits. O Allah, make us love You, Your angels, Your prophets, and Your messengers, and make us love Your righteous servants. O Allah, make us beloved to You, Your angels, Your prophets, Your messengers, and Your righteous servants. O Allah, make things easy for us and keep away from us what is difficult. Forgive us in the hereafter and the present, and make us among the leaders of the righteous.
[Machine] He used to prolong the standing (in prayer) until, for fear of him becoming unconscious, we would sit down. He would then perform the takbir (saying "Allahu Akbar") three times and say, "There is no god but Allah, alone without partner. His is the Kingdom and His is the praise, and He is Able to do all things" (i.e. Sayyid al-Istighfar). He would then supplicate extensively, raising his voice and lowering it, to the extent that he would ask Allah to fulfill his need in whatever he sought from Him. He would then perform the takbir three times and repeat the same phrase as before, then he would supplicate extensively in the same manner, until he did this seven times. He would say this at as-Safa and al-Marwah (during Hajj and 'Umrah). And Abu al-Hasan al-'Alawi informed us from 'Abdullah bin ash-Sharqi, who narrated from Abu Zur'a, who narrated from 'Abdullah bin Yazid, who narrated from Sadaqah, who narrated from 'Iyad bin 'Abdul-Rahman al-Ansari, who narrated from Musa bin 'Uqbah, who narrated from Salim, who narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar, who narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the same as above.
[Machine] He used to say at Safa, "O Allah, let me live according to the Sunnah of Your Prophet ﷺ and cause me to die upon his religion, and protect me from the misguidance of trials and tribulations."
I performed Hajj with Ibn Masʿud , and saw him doing Rami of the big Jamra (Jamrat-ul-Aqaba) with seven small pebbles, keeping the Kaʿba on his left side and Mina on his right. He then said, "This is the place where the one on whom Surat-al-Baqara was revealed (i.e. Messenger of Allah ﷺ ) stood." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1749)
[Machine] "But I command you to do it; obedience to the call for prayer was responded to by Ibrahim. So when he descended into the valley, he hastened and said, 'O Allah, forgive and have mercy, as You are the Most Honorable, the Most Generous.' This is the most authentic narration regarding that, narrated by Ibn Mas'ood."
[Machine] I heard Ibn Umar saying between Safa and Marwa, "My Lord, forgive me and have mercy on me, as You are the Most Honorable, the Most Generous."
[Machine] Someone told me that they saw Uthman ibn Affan standing in a pool beneath Safa and he did not show any signs of discomfort.
